    Quick note: Eileen does, in fact, remember the Hunter's dream. If you make an enemy of her before the Grand Cathedral, when she kills you she has a line that says "Do you still dream? Tell the little Doll I said hello."

      I don't know why people say that you lose memory of the Hunter's Dream after you're beheaded and wake up. Gehrman says you'll forget the dream, but how could he know? He's always been stuck in the Dream. People who have woken up, like Djura and Eileen still remember. Plus, if the Hunter's Dream is like any other dream, it might be difficult to remember it after you wake up, but it's not impossible, and the more trauma and time you spend in the dream, the more likely you are to remember at least some major pieces of it.

    • @Hater20X

      @@Ashlevon my theory and opinion. I think Djura and Eileen were kicked out of the Hunters dream for not fulfilling thier mission. Like they just said fuck it and stopped thier quest. There are so many headstones in the hunters dreams obviously other hunters have come trhough here and when they complete their tasks whatever that maybe. Each new hunter probably having a diffrent task they are beheaded and set free by Gerhman and memories forgotten. But Elieen and Drujan still remember but no longer dream because when they die they die forever. So I think they were kicked out of the hunters dream for going against thier contract. Maybe Djran protecting beast and Elieen hunting other hunters was reason to kick them out and null thier contracts.

    In a way, I think Bloodborne’s unanswered (or even unanswerable) questions help to elevate it as a game about cosmic horror. We have to contend with the fact that there are aspects at play within Bloodborne’s world that entirely defy explanation or even human comprehension.

      I think the biggest point in favor of that is when you discover that the inside of the hunters dream is actually at the bottom of the “Great Sea/Lake” it’s especially noticeable when you first step out of the clock tower and look to your left and right above you. Also the snail that falls from the sky otw to where the whirligig saw is further implies being below the sea/lake since those snails chill at the bottom of the sea/lake and fell from ABOVE beside the hunter. I think that really goes to show you how little we know and can comprehend about these nightmares and eldritch horrors.

    I think the reason why Yharnam seems so much more peaceful after Gehrman kills you is because the night of the hunt is finally over. • @dowfreak7
      @dowfreak7 Рік тому +318

      The theories I heard surrounding that ending were leaning in two directions: The hunt is cyclical and will simply repeat. Or, the hunt is quite literally neverending.
      In neither case would the hunt truly be over, simply because you let Gehrman kill you. All that does, is free YOU from the hunter's dream, but another hunter is likely to already be your replacement, while you are either stranded to become an NPC in Yharnam or you leave somehow.
      That's why it's the worst ending in many people's eyes, because you essentially chose to wuss out of all the consequences, despite all the knowledge you have, thrust this terrible curse onto yet another hunter and all the original issues are still right there. You just chose to close your eyes to them.

Its not "cinematic" or "story driven" but it is good information and is clearly the correct interpretation. With that in mind, I was under the impression that whilst it's motivations were unclear, the Moon Presence's purpose was reasonably obvious; it wanted to kill Mergo (and perhaps other Great Ones). That's why it's happy to release the Hunter after Mergo is dead. Presumably whatever taks it had for Djura and Eileen, they also completed. It keeps Gehrman to maintain the Dream and keep luring in pawns for its schemes. I also thought that Mergo was Oedon's child which it, like all Great Ones, has been trying to conceive.

    Got into Bloodborne August last year during a lockdown. My God did I fall down the rabbithole. 9 characters, 500 hours, and platinum. Safe to say, I love this game. It's incredible. The story, the combat, the world design, the characters. It's all great and sticks in your mind. Even though I've only played it for a comparatively short period of time (not in terms of time spent playing but over how many months/years), I can happily say it is in my top 3 games of all time alongside Half Life 2 and Fallout:New Vegas.
    It certainly has its flaws, but Bloodborne is a timeless masterpiece. I'd be very keen to see a sequel, but only if From Software is driven to do so, and can really create something extraordinary again.

    The Nightmares/dreams are literally pocket dimensions created by the Great Ones for specific reasons. For example, the Hunter's Dream was created by the Moon Presence to trap Gehrman and use him to influence hunters in the real world, Kos created the Hunter's Nightmare to torment the hunters, etc... They create those dimensions because they can't physically interact with our reality (Ebrietas is not considered full on Great One, like Rom she is similar to "Kin"). Yharnam is indeed our world, the "Waking world" that the Doll refers is implying that we will no longer "Dream". Because the great ones ascended so much, they can only truly exist in their respective dimensions.
    Edit: to clarify, in my interpretation, not every Great One ascended to the same level. You have the big boys like Oedon, Kos and the Moon Presence, and you have the "lesser ones" like the Brain of Mensis and the Amygdalas. Some of them clearly cannot exist in our reality. Oedon ascended so much that he became formless, and the Moon Presence had to use Gehrman and the Hunter to do his biddings.

      Adding just a little bit on to this as the great ones ascend, they can no longer exist in our world and must exist in their own, being the nightmares. The nightmares being stacked means you can take their ascension quite literally as they exist above out world. Rom can also fit into this. If her greatest aspiration, like the rest of the school, was to ascend, what better punishment than having her exist in a layer even below the waking world.

    Here's my theory on the Moon Presence, the Hunter's Dream and Mensis;
    - The Moon presence is the cause of the beast scourge, the moon presence is very beastly in appearance whereas other great ones are kin like. Its chest is open too, leaving blood behind which is why people were able to find old blood, since this is the blood they were using to administer, they have the beastly blood within them. (Whereas Ebrietas blood used in the research hall turns people into celestials. And the people around the Fishing Hamlet have become fish people as they lived off Kos' body.)
    - Now I believe Micolash wrote the four notes in the Lecture Hall as it is part of the Mensis Nightmare. These are;
    "Master Willem was right. Evolution without courage will be the ruin of our race."
    "Hunt the Great Ones, Hunt the Great Ones."
    "The nameless moon presence beckoned by Laurence and his associates. Paleblood."
    "Three third cords."
    - So Micolash learnt you must consume three third cords to transcend, Mensis currently have 1 from Queen Yarnham
    - To find more cords they will have to hunt great ones to have them create children.
    - They found out about the moon presence so would use a special child, Mergo to lure the Moon Presence closer as it would then create its own children
    "When the red moon hangs low, the line between man and beast is blurred. And when the Great Ones descend, a womb will be blessed with child."
    The moon presence will later on have a child with Arianne and imposter Iosefka after Rom is killed.
    - To use Mergo they would have to commune with it by creating the Mensis Nightmare, allowing them to bring the Moon presence down.
    This is evolution using courage as he sees it, willing give anything include your own life. Unlike the Healing Churches ways which will bring ruin to their race.
    -When the moon descended the Moon Prescence's effect on everything with its blood inside them grew and they began transforming into beasts.
    - Rom puts a lock on the ritual but the beast scourge has already been activated.
    - A while later after the hunters have been established, they raid the Fishing Hamlet and get cursed with the Hunter's Nightmare.
    - Maria then has a celestial child as the cord from the workshop is said to have come from the child of the vilebloods.
    - Laurence and his associates use this cord to commune with the moon presence to create the Hunter's Dream as a counter to the Hunter's Nightmare, so hunters can come there to die instead of being sent to the nightmare, which is why there are lots of gravestones. But then they also start making contracts with hunters to lock them into the dream until they can find a way to stop the beast scourge.
    "To escape this dreadful Hunter's Dream, halt the source of the spreading scourge of beasts, lest the night carry on forever."
    - Gehrman's job is to stay on watch over the dream, whereas Laurence's job was to go to the Nightmare to find a way to stop it, however he became a beast. Gehrman is still waiting for the Nightmare to end before he can end the Hunter's Dream.
    - The player character however ended up being the one to end the Nightmare and consume 3 cords to transcend, if that's the ending you chose.

      What always boggled me all these years of lore hunting and creteing speculation and such was WHO went down to Pthemero dungs and stuck that first syringe to collect blood samples. Why did we do this without even knowing or having the insight to even understand and comprehend that there is such beings called Great Ones. Was Beyrgenworth even a school of education before becoming an out of plain sight research clinic? What exactly happened between the first meeting of Pthemero civilization when Laurence and the gang decided to venture the dungeons.
      In the game, or seriously at this point, in this story... This game just like how this video is split into The Hunt, The Nightmares (or the layers if you want to think of them like that), and the DLC (or in my personal case, i call this the Climax) are almost perfect plots for picture perfect stories or movies that id love to watch and dissect into personal astonishment. Did the moon pres always exist in world of yharm in the first place since they all fully rose from the grounds of the unknown dungeons, prior of Laurence and the gang digging into the depths?
      What was the first beckoning of these beings.. This game begs for a major introduction to how this all really started. Still so many questions.. one day i only hope to ascend to full and pure understand of this. Always and forever, we all grow "tired of these piteous nights" of unanswered questions.

    Bloodborne's story seems to take a lot of inspiration from Lovecraft obviously, but specifically from the story "From Beyond". In From Beyond, a scientist discovers how to transcend human senses and discovers that the universe is way bigger than we know and that all around us, creatures live that are wholly different to our world and experiences. We normally can't interact with them, and they can't interact with us. This seems very similar to the whole nightmare / dream realm and the great ones. I think this is the best explanation for the story.

Not only that, it looks almost cocoon-like. Going back to the part where we see at least 3 different Roms, perhaps that's some kind of stepping stone for the Great Ones. I have a different view of the true ending and the dream realms. In my personal interpretation, the dream realms are "spiritual" realms like an afterlife of sorts, and by defeating Gherman in the dream you are setting him free so he can return to the real world and truly die, you fight him as an act of kindness to give him peace. By fighting the Moon Presence you are sacrificing your humanity by consuming the umbilical cords in order to destroy Flora's tyranny over the human afterlife and becoming it's new protector, granting peace in death to all humanity at the cost of your own. By that point in the game you have revealed the Great Ones to the world by destroying Rom, and you took many of them down with your own human hands so now mankind has a chance to fight back thanks to the hunter, and once their lives are done no man will have to be stuck in the purgatory of the dream or the hell of the nightmares since the hunter is now watching over them, a human turned god.

    My theory is that the moon presence traps german to train and send hunters to fight monsters and keep the hunt going forever because he uses the blood echoes as a source of power. I derived this idea from the fact that the runes that give you more bloodechoes are the "moon" runes as if the moon presence is syphoning off some of the blood echoes you get every time you kill a beast. And through the power of these runes you are able to overpower it in a sense and collect more of the echoes for yourself.

    I believe the Moon Presences motivation was to kill Mergo, as Mergo would one day be strong enough to rival the Moon Presence. When that’s done the Dream is no longer needed and the Hunter is offered to leave. When the Hunter refuses they become a replacement for Gherman for the next Hunter that is needed to slay perhaps a future infant great one. But if you consume all three cords you rival the Moon Presence and overtake it, ironically doing the very thing you were supposed to prevent Mergo from doing.

    • @c.k.4883

      This makes sense imo. Otherwise why would the moon presence hug the hunter after the hunter kills the person who he pretty much imprisoned (Gerhman) and forced to guide other hunters to hunt the source of the nightmare? Also another yt video mentioned something about Gehrman that I believe to be true too in regards that he cries out for help to Master Willem and Laurence because he doesn't actually know that they are no longer in a healthy state, or in Laurence's case alive, to try to rescue him from the dream because he's been imprisoned for so long without any knowledge of what's happened to Laurence and Willem outside of the hunter's dream since their mission started some time around the discovery of the Pthumerian's knowledge of the great ones. His story, much like every npc's story in the game, is especially grim but when you hear him cry out to Laurence & Willem in the game it's heartbreaking & chilling at the same time.

      There's nothing in game that would state Flora wanted Mergo dead.. if that was the case, the Hunt would end forever. No need to retain Gehrman! But he remains trapped, and we get kicked out, seemingly like other Hunters before us. Saying the dream is "no longer needed" is objectively wrong. WE are no longer needed.. perhaps until another Great One is found, and it need be killed. Because the Moon Presence somehow wants to be the only one left alive... IF Great Ones can even be killed by human hands, which would be hilarious. Considering Great Ones might not be attached to the physical form we see them in, instead of being a projection in our three dimensional reality.

    • @dantoki6371
      @dantoki6371 2 роки тому +27

      This doesn't adds up at all.
      Mergo is just a conciousnes of the dead child of Queen Yhranam, who has been dead for a long time by the game takes place.
      With the DLC they hammer home the fact that as you "kill" the orphan, you are liberating it's spirit/conciousnes from the nightmare. The same happens with mergo, thats why Yhranam bows to you after you killed the wetnurse.
      Also the gravestones are anything to go by, then a couple of hundreds hunters have already gone throught the hunters dream and somehow I doubt every one of them have killed a great one's child, because the moonpresence for some reason feels threathened for some reason, even though we have zero indicaton or information to think that the great ones are bothered by echother.
      Also Gherman doesn't push us towards killing great ones, only to kill beasts on that night.

      @Astraben 2 роки тому

      @@dantoki6371 It does make sense when you (out of pretty much nowhere, sure, but I love this idea) believe that the Great Ones are just using you as tools in their wars. Great One birth rates are supposed to be very low, and you kill one or two of them in the waking world, plus Mergo´s consciousness, plus The One Reborn, who might or might not be one, but I tend to believe so. The Great Ones seem pretty involved in Yarnham´s history, and it might well be a breeding ground for them, since, again, two women can get pregnant from the Great Ones, Iosefka and Arianna, and Annalise´s "blood dregs" look like sperm. Arianna is tremendously traumatized by this event, and Queen Yarnham might simply be linked to her child even after death, and transported to Mergo´s place outside of the Waking World.
      The Moon Presence has reason to kill as many infant Great Ones as possible, both within the Dreams and the Waking World, since they might be children of its enemies, possible future rivals, or yet another pawn in the God´s cosmic game.
      The fact that you aren´t actively pursuing the murder of the infant Great Ones is no indication that it isn´t the Presence´s true objective all along, and the other hunters don´t necessarily have to kill one themselves, just act in its unknowable interest, be it facilitating your own journey to Mergo and Kos, or simply perpetuating the shit going down in Yarnham.

      @@Astraben Well the pthumerian dungeouns are underneath Yharnam, wich is said to be the tomb of the gods, so for them to have involvement in the city, is not surprising.
      The problem with the idea of the whole Great Ones' cosmic powerstrugles, or fear of dead great ones children is that, there is absolutely zero evidence for that.
      Again, Mergo is dead and wont grow more powerful. He has been dead for long enough to a civilzation to fall and an other one to emerge and he is still a crying baby.
      Even killing mergo is a mercy killing, you essentially free an infant conciousnes from a nightmare. At the end of the wet nurse fight we can hear that he calms down and then, Queen Yharnam even thanks us for the act.
      Same with the orphan, at the end we free it from the nightmare and it is framed as a positive thing.
      In Yhranam, Amygdalas littering the place without doing much, while oedon is there trying to make babies, Ebrietas chills with the choir. They clearly not interested in eachoter.
      The main thing the Great Ones characterised by is that they want children and not by warring with eachoter and dead babies, "unknowable interests" or anything else.
      The Moon presence was once beconed by Laurence as a note states. In the dream Gherman talks about Laurence and asking "what taking you so long". There was clearly a pact between Laurence and the moon presence and Gherman was apparently a part of that deal, and if it would be "killing" mergo then Gherman would be free along with us, but he aint.
      Most likely she wants a surrogate child and Gherman acts as such, while waiting for Laurence (wich is an other rabbit hole in itself).

I believe truly good stories do not merely make statements, but instead choose to ask a question and thus leave themselves open to the interpretations of the audience. And I think this sentiment holds especially true to the medium of video games seeing as how elements that are left more ambiguous allow the story to maintain an effective layer of mystery even after the story is complete and all the relevant cards are on the table. It allows the story to live on and continue to provoke interesting thoughts or narratives well after you set the controller down.

    This is a GREAT video! Although I have an issue with something... specifically 42:05 "Moon Presence is the host of the dream"
    The hosts are supposed to be people. For instance, Micolash is the host of the Mensis nightmare, under Mergo.
    In a similar fashion, the Hunter's Dream (our hub) and the Hunter's Nightmare (DLC) are both hosted by the same person: *Gehrman*
    The Hunter's Dream is not a real place, it's a dream-like plane reminiscent of the workshop, where the tombstones are not real burial places aside for one. The one that is also at the workshop: Lady Maria's grave. This is where we find the bone "from an apprentice of Gehrman's" that allows us to dodge better, an ability Maria has. This is also where we find the hair thingy, probably something Gehrman kept as souvenir. This is also where we find the doll, something Gehrman crafted as a proxy for Maria, whom he loved. Finally, this is where we find the umbilical cord. I believe Gehrman couldn't live with the loss of Maria, and used the cord to communicate with a Great One (in this case Moon Presence) to create the dream, where he now lives. But it didn't turn out how he wanted. He is frail and passive, forced to host the hunters, still without Maria. Clearly he rejected the doll for not being Maria, so he tells us we can use her however we want. He's stuck there, bitter, while everyone else is in his nightmare.
    The Hunter's Nightmare is most likely the result of a personal curse Kos put on Gehrman, who seemingly defiled her, her son, and the fishing village at the orders of the Church (as they wanted to gain knowledge). This is where all the hunters end up after succombing to bloodlust, due to the curse in the blood intoxicating them. We can notice that ALL the old hunters are in the nightmare (in the real world they all turned into beasts and/or died) aside from Gehrman, who hosts this nightmare from within the dream. This is why the doll tells us Gehrman can finally sleep well after defeating the Orphan; the nightmare was slain, so even though the blood is still cursed, at least hunters are free from hunting perpetually in Gehrman's nightmare.
    The interesting thing about Bloodborne is that evidently, dying either sends you to the dream or a nightmare, depending if you've been corrupted by the blood or not. The intro cutscene after the contract seems to show this: beasthood is coming for you, but if you're still safe, the messengers can allow you to go to the dream instead when you die.
    ---
    One last thing: the Living Failures are not meant to be emissaries, but great ones themselves. This video seemed unsure about it, but there's a description somewhere that confirms this.

    The way I always saw it, If we’re taking lovecrafts original concepts to heart for bloodborne lore, was that ascended great ones were cosmic beings whose consciousness became so powerful they became untethered to their physical forms. Their minds were no longer a series of electrical patterns in an organic computer, but instead a sentience roaming existence without need for physical form. They existed on a higher plane of existence (possibly the 4th dimension) only able to interact with our plane in cerebral form, and so they created nightmares or dream dimensions where they could pull in the minds of 3rd dimensional beings to interact with them. Then being of the 4th dimension would also explain some timeline inconsistencies with great ones in the story, seeing as 4 dimensional creatures would theoretically be able to move freely through time the way that 3rd dimensional creatures can move freely through space

    • @Big_Dai
      @Big_Dai 2 роки тому +15

      I completely agree. Using a higher dimension is a perspective that easily allows explanation of how Great Ones are beyond us in every sense of the word. One that allows us, mere mortals, to see how things exist in more than one place because of their meddling.. and how a being higher than us excels in understanding and manipulation of our reality.
      Humans killing Gods is hilarious.
      It makes more sense that we just bother them on a lower dimension.. maybe destroying the projection they created to try and access us, for whatever undiscernible reason.

    The Moon Presence's motivation cannot be discerned at all, specially considering how little things change unless we "kill" it. A great representation of how Great Ones cannot be understood.
    If what she really wanted was to to send hunters to.. hunt, and return with blood echoes for her to assimilate through the Doll that was created because of it, then it's hunger cannot ever be satiated. Making sense for the endless continuation of this nightmare. If what the Moon Presence wants was to kill Mergo, then that doesn't make sense, since Great Ones cannot truly be killed, just their physical existence on the plane we find them in.. right?
    Also, the "Hunt" continues, as if nothing had changed for "Flora".. The Hunter might be "offered to leave", but Gehrman, the Doll and the Dream remain. It might just resent Great Ones in general, and wants us to kick them out of our three dimensional reality.
    As per the artbook : "Human or no, the oozing blood is a medium of the highest grade, and the essence of the formless Great One, Oedon".
    There are a LOT of theories and analysis on Oedon, and it's corruption and propagation through blood, or blood itself(?). Flora itself might be Oedon (never seen in the real world, but whose presence can be felt, although formless) or a child engendered from it! So is Mergo it's sibling (both from Oedon, but from different mothers : Yharnam and Annalise)? We know Great Ones want children.. but we don't know how siblings treat each other.
    Anyway, I would kill to have had Runesmith Caryll in the game.. for someone with more knowledge than we'll ever have, put things into a better perspective. Or for Miyazaki to release a "design" book with all parts pertaining to the creation of the story, before he dies! I bet people would buy it.. a LOT. But alas! Bloodborne causes us Hunters to suffer for eternity.

      All Great Ones want one thing: a child. Laurence beckoned Flora (who’s more of an it than a she, as are all Great Ones) by using the child he got from Cainhurst after raiding it. Oedon also wants a child, and is actually the “father” of Arianna’s child. Great Ones can’t have kids, but forever long for a child of their own. Kos was already dead when it washed ashore, simply because it was pregnant. Gehrman acts as a surrogate child, and so can the player. That’s why umbilical cords, the literal, physical connection between a mother and her child, is found in the original workshop.
      Though the lore is really personal and phenomenological in this game. If that doesn’t click, that’s cool.

      Well technically the moon presence is responsable for sustaining the dream and Gherman acts as her host
      Also the moon presence is directly related to the scourge of the beast as is evident by the notes left behind, also the worst hunts occur during blood moon nights
      That is why you go to stop the school of mensis ritual that is trying to beckon paleblood
      In the 3rd ending were you ascend, the hunter practically ends paleblood's influence (even if it can still exists in another reality in some form, her conscience has no rein over the dream anymore, effectively ending the night of the hunt "although we aren't still sure since the game ends abruptly after that" )

    If you kill Master Willem you get the Eye Rune. And if you look closely at the Milkweed Rune it spells HP. On another note there are actually 4 umbilical cord pieces. The 4th you get by killing Arianna and her child. So there’s the one in the old workshop, The one from Josephka, The one from Mergo’s wet nurse and the one from Arianna.

    Hey there, I just wanted to thank you for making this video. I've had Bloodborne for almost a decade because I love the vibe and the story. But I have never even been able to go past the tutorial really. It is just too difficult for me, I can't seem to get a hang of it. So I have been yearning for a proper explanation of the story line for almost 10 years. So thank you from the bottom auf my heart for explaining everything. I appreciate it a lot. (I know fromStudio would never do this, but I still wish there was an easy mode for their games. Or simply more checkpoints. Not as in make the games easier in general, but as in a special feature for silly beans like me who come for the good story, but lack the skills and discipline necessary 😢 )

    My interpretation of the blood moon is that it is a form of the Moon Presence, hence the similar names and the fact that the blood moon only appears in the Hunter's Dream after the Moon Presence arrives.
    Also Mergo being the son of the great one Oedon, means he has no form of any kind and only exists in voice. I believe that the One Reborn may have been Mensis attempting to construct a physical vessel worthy enough for Mergo to possess.

      @Darth Maul Vaati is GREAT! But haven't seen a video of him explaining Bloodborne in its entirety as well as this. Vaati does probably the best dark souls lore videos, but for Bloodborne this is the best one if we're talking about the whole story as smoothly, accurate, and straightforward as possible.

    Great analysis. I've never found Bloodborne to be very interesting (or good) so having a video like this helps keep me in the lore loop. I can't muster up the motivation to play the game, but I can watch you break it down for an hour. I don't feel any more compelled to revisit it after watching this, though.

    I have mixed feelings about Miyazaki not tackling the BB style and Setting again. On one hand I'd pay all the money for a sequel or spin off, on the other it stands as a singular masterpiece. I've played all the From games and it's still my uncontested favorite.
    But for God's sake give us a PS5 remaster or a PC Port. This game deserves to be 60fps and in 4k. I'd pay $60 just for that

    @gingy you've got an interesting pronunciation for Amygdala, where you emphasize each syllable. It's pronounced similarly to the anatomical term, or like the city name "Albuquerque". It's not pronounced "Al-Buh-Kwer-Kwe", but rather in almost the one fell syllable "Albakirky". So the we wouldn't have "Ah-mig-dah-lah" but rather "Uhmigdla"
