- This is the first video in my Wirework Ring Series
In this video I show you how easy it is to make a cool funky ring using a hardware store washer and wire. You will learn how to use a dapping block to "dome" the washer and how to antique/patina it after with liver of sulfur. This ring is sure to get noticed and the possibilities are endless.
The smaller the washer, the smaller gauge of wire to use.
If you have weak hands, use 16 gauge or 14 gauge wire.
If you are a beginner and haven't made a ring before, check out my first ring video: • How To Make an Easy Wi...
Tools & Materials:

Thank you so much Jeanne. That means everything to me.
Excellent tutorial. I love the ring. One tip...when I am trying to texturize a small piece, I use a short piece of scotch tape on one side to hold it in place. Doesn't interfer with the process and saves fingers. Thx for the video. I look forward to others.
***** Thanks so much and for your great tip. Thanks for watching
fantastic videos! Thanks sooo much! I will be using these for years to come!!!!

Of course I noticed the other ring you were wearing. It is so cool!!
It looks like you just twisted maybe 18 or 20ga wire and just wrapped it around and around. I would love to know.😀

+Janice Cook Hi Janice, thank you for watching my channel. I'm sorry you had trouble seeing what I was doing. Filming can be challenging and with each video I learn something new. Thank you for sharing. Other than the initial twist of the wires and wrapping the shank, it's really up to your own creativity with loops and swirls. Check out my Facebook page to see the rings that have been posted by subscribers.

Live alone and you help fill another void as well as teaching to me .Love your style.Sincerely,Loraine Roy
Hi Loraine, thank you for your kind comment and for your support. You made me smile.
Mixing the metal colors is cool! I have some copper and some brass washers. How pretty those too would be with copper wire!
I so appreciate how you zoom in so we can see the details, eg. at 15:36 & 18:12.
Thanks for including the patina step in this video.
Yeah, I agree 6.5 ring size would be small. Design a bit too chunky for a pinky ring, IMHO.
bautiful....precioso me ha encantado. gracias por compartir
Nieves Martin Muchas gracias
That's really neat. Great presentation.

Thank you, I will try to do the same. Much appreciated.
i love your twisted ring,,, do you have a tutorial for that one?,,, well all your tutorials are fabulous more than great, I am learning and you are the best... thanks so much
nana pena Thank you so much for your support and kind comments. I don't have a tutorial for that ring yet, but it's on the list.
I've just stumbled across your video. I love the tutorial and aI have already made 2 rings!
Methelinhill Right on! Thanks so much for watching and sharing.
+Annie Laura thank you for your suggestions. Personally I don't think a flame from a stove is intense enough to soften the wire as it needs to get cherry red with a torch to be annealed enough to make a difference (this is just my opinion and not a fact because I have never tried it). I used a really heavy gauge wire in this ring and a thinner gauge would make it easier to manipulate.
I will definitely try your suggestion with the soap and water on the steel wool.
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to share your tips.
Как красиво у Вас за окном! 🤗
Thanks Liz
I did it with hot pink craft wire ,.Lookin Good!
Hi Liz. I love your video on the funky chunky washer ring. I was wondering about the other ring with the coils around the washer in the same video. will you be making a tutorial for that one as well. it is so beautiful.
Love the ring and your enthusiasm. Super tutorial. Can't wait to see more.
Thank you so much Paula...I'm so happy and can't wait to share more.
Liz,
This video is great. I am ready to route thru Hubby's washers. :) That you for being so generous with your designs and excellent how tos. I wish you would come to the East Coast and do some workshops at Philly Bead Fest.
+Kim Lyons Thank you Kim for watching and your kind feedback. I live on the East Coast in Nova Scotia but never considered myself good enough to do a workshop at such a huge venue...the usual self doubt.
+Making It Easy with Liz , I must disagree. Look at the numbers of folks watching you each week. I am in NJ.
OMG Liz - I just made this ring and I LOVE it. The doming was the most difficult part. And this first one definitely looks way rustic (read imperfect). But the wire stretches just as you said - how does it do that anyway? I plan to make several more. This was so much fun and your videos are easy to understand. Thanks so much.
Madelyn Thompson Thank you Madelyn for watching. I love your enthusiasm.
I made this ring and it came out lovely, took several tries because the washer wouldn't tighten down, but I finally got it right. Now the washer silver color is coming off and I have someone who wants to buy one but I need your advice on this matter. It was a zinc metal washer which I wonder if that is the problem, I don't know. I'm thinking if I can possible paint the washer because I adore the ring. Look forward to your advice on this. Thank you
Love it!!!
+artsybookchick Thank you so much for watching. Get that dapping block out! LOL
You're gooooood! Thanks, 1926lady
Thats brilliant thank you for showing x
Vonnie Truscott Thank you so much Vonnie for watching.
Super easy!
Very nice, thanks.
Thank you Lori for watching.
Loved it.
Thanks!!
+Janee Polino Hi Janee, thank you so much for making my day! That really makes me feel good. Thank you so much for watching and for your support.
I did one of these last night. My husband thought it rocked! I thought it was great that I didn't wake him while I was hammering dents! Or put the washer through the window from kitchen counter while flippin across the room ;-)
+Grace Robin Right on Grace. LOL you're funny and probably like me...working until 3 a.m. I really love your excitement. Thank you for letting me know I'm doing a good job. :0)
amazing!
waw! Liz...beautifull; I dream about all the combination I will made with all kind of washers aviables in my hardware store! :o)
Francine from Montreal
Francine Deneault Hi Francine. Thanks so much for watching. I'm in Nova Scotia.
Love it!!!! will try to make it with aluminum wire.
Thank you. IMO aluminum wire is OK for practicing, but not for anything you hope to last. It's very soft, but if you make it work, yay!
thanks for the tutorial is very well done 👏 I wanted to know if, with the gel that makes the patina after jewelery is protected from oxidation or other product you have to give up not to be ruined? thank you
I think as long as the washers are stainless and NOT zinc coated, you could simply either use a torch or put the ring over a gas stove burner to soften the wire enough to wrap it with ease.
I'd also like to suggest using soap and water on your steel wool. It keeps those tiny wisps of wool from flaking as much, as well as preventing it from floating into the air to be breathed in!
Gorgeousssssss
love it
LOVE IT♡
Making it Easy with Liz, I LOVE THAT RING!!! Since you are using raw copper wire, do you need to seal it to keep it from tarnishing and/or turning your finger green? Thank you for your wonderful tutorials!!!
I've had mine for years and it NEVER has turned my ring green or any other color ..YOU must not do it correctly or clean it well after the liver of Sulphur bath ..
great video
Sally FitzGibbons Thank you Sally.
muy lindo gracias
Thank you for watching Marta.
AWESOME TUTORIAL!!! TFS luv! ♥ dig
digupstuff Thanks and I love your name..
Making It Easy with Liz Elizabeth??? ♥
digupstuff Is my name Elizabeth? Yes. I like your UA-camr name, digupstuff.
Thank you so much! I have my degree in Anthropology. My husband's is FIXUPSTUFF! LOL! ♥
You should be putting the washer into the same size dome as the washer, so it just fits inside the lip of the dome. That way it won't scoot around while you are hammering, and you will get the desired shape more quickly and accurately. Nice ring.
Even when it slips, you still accomplish it...I find you don't get a sharp curve and have more control over it. Thanks for watching and your comment.
Hi Liz! I just found you and love your videos! I made this ring last night and it's pretty cool. Will you be making any more videos?
Barbara Spehar Hi Barbara...thanks so much for your support. Yes, I will be making more videos on lots of things. My life just got a bit crazy, you know lol.
very fun! thanks!
Anne nelson Thank you Anne!
Love this vid!
Thank you Helen.
Nice tute, Liz. What size washer works best? Thx
So cool👍👏🙋🏼♀️
❤
That really does look great! Thanks for sharing. I bought some gorgeous, twisted wire at Home Depot and would love to use it in a project but I have a problem with the end pieces of the wire coming apart and showing all of the strands. ( hope you get the picture). Have you ever used wire like this? I can solder the ends but it doesn't always work on my design. Any ideas?
+Gloria Borrero Hi Gloria. I twist my own wire and it's usually only 2 strands, maybe 3 and I too have a bit of a problem with the separating. I really don't have a solution, I just usually frig with it until I can hide the ends into my work somehow. Thanks so much for watching.
***** Thanks Ema. You could if you want to keep the copper from changing, but I usually don't and will just go over it now and then with the steel wool to polish it. If you do want to coat it, I would suggest either Renaissance Microcrystaline wax, metal sealer that can get wet...a spray lacquer for metal would work. You only need a very light coating.
Hi Liz. I have just discovered your channel and LOVE it. I have made 4 Boho Chic rings, 2 sets of Atlantic Waves earrings and pendant, and a number of frames as well. Question for you - where do you get your copper in nice big spools. All I find in local bead stores are small packages. I live in Ontario.
Liz, great video, going to make me one, thanks for the confidence!
+Jasmine Brooke Awesome Jasmine. Thanks so much for watching.
If I had a favorite,,you would be it !!!
Ahh. Thank you Deborah. 😊
Hello. i absolutely love this ring. thanks so much for sharing. can you please tell me where you buy your spool of copper wire. i cant find anywhere that has a spool that big. thank you.
ndsm17 Thanks so much for watching and for the compliment. I purchase my wire from a wholesale supplier. You could Google "1 pound spool of..." and see what you come up with. I sell wire but not by the spool...I might have to look into selling them in the future.
I know this reply is 2 years late but copy and paste this number in the ebay search bar..this guy is great and fast shipping. 271929038058
Genial genial genial
tHANKS !
Very cool. I love stamping words or designs on metal. Would it be possible to stamp something on the washer like someone's initials, a design stamp like a bird, or a word such as "love" or "hope"? Love this ring. Will have to try it.
Thank you so much Beverly for watching. I found this particular washer to be really hard metal. It's worth the try. I'm not sure if annealing with a torch would help. Copper washers would be a bit softer but still very hard but could be annealed to soften it. Let me know how you make out with the stamping.
Hi Liz, love your work and your video's are very easy to follow. I was wondering where you purchase your wire?
Thanks,
Cindy
Thank you so much Cindy...you can buy wire on my website, www.makingiteasywithliz.com
+artsybookchick Thank you so much for the kudos! Yes, I did twist 18g wire together and did a quick little ring the same as in my video ua-cam.com/video/hTdukcoCnmQ/v-deo.html
It just turned out like that and I have never attempted another one...I was just using up wire I twisted. I will try another one for a video. Thanks so much for your support.
+Making It Easy with Liz yes, please demonstrate the ring on your left finger!
I will make that my next video.
Looking forward to it. Thank you Liz! Wonderful videos.
Thank you so much!
Would like to know the brand/name of the gel you used. Bead Buddy Patina Solution did a fair job on the washer, but nothing at all to the copper part of my ring. I mixed it according to the direction (1 tbs. gel to 1 cup water). This tutorial is great - and thanks for giving it to all of us fans!
Hi Joy,
I'm not familiar with Bead Buddy and it sounds like it's not concentrated if you have to use a Tbs, nor very economical.
I use and will be selling on my website, XL Gel (Xtended Life). You may find some copper washers won't take a patina real well. Try using a green 3M scrubby pad on it to open the surface. With the XL Gel, you only need 1 or 2 drops per mug of hot tap water. Some washers may take several tries...not sure why, maybe not 100% copper (made in China).
For your wire not taking the patina, make sure it's bare copper and not coated.
Thanks so much for watching and for your support.
beautiful x x
Pherine1 Thank you so much. I'm happy you like it.
