    Gary one last question l took my extension housing off to replace that main seal back there and when I pulled the cover off there was a rubber O-Ring behind there between the parking pol gear and the seal on the output shaft. In your experience is that o ring supposed to be there?

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  7 років тому

      Is the o-ring around the output shaft?

    • @joej.9584
      @joej.9584 7 років тому

      Yes it is. It is between the parking gear and the extension housing seal. Extension housing seal is the one that failed and know it was previously tampered with by half ass mechanic so that's why I ask

      +issa alazzabi I dont know of any other way to open the solenoids, not sure where yoyr located, but have you considered a company that rebuilds valvebodies, send them yours for rebuild and they send it back to you.

    great stuff gary...the fine tooth od planet set will work with both....you cant use a coarse where a fine tooth was....we do it all the time at our shop....been using the 04 and up sol pks on all units also....thanks for your videos i always learn something new....keep up the good work

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  8 років тому

      +Jeff Stepp Thanks Jeff, we use late sol blocks on all too. so you use an early o/d set up with 24 teeth on late units?

    • @jeffstepp1969
      @jeffstepp1969 8 років тому

      +Gary Ferraro you can only use the late in place of an early you cant use a early in a late....so when a course planet set gets destroyed you can use a fine tooth planet set....you cant ever replace a course set with an early

    Good day Gary, I have a 2006 Mustang GT with the 5R55S. I have been having issues with intermittent flare-ups when shifting 2-3 at low speeds like 30 mph. If I disconnect the battery or pull fuse 47 this will go away for a day or so but returns. It has never had a single code or a flashing OD light. The car is in great shape and has 96,000 miles and I am the original owner. I recently had it to Ford who communicated with their hotline but they were not completely sure of the issue. They could get no codes either. They figured it was something with the solenoid pack or the valve body. I had them replace both parts with new Ford parts. There is significant improvement but I did have it do the 2-3 shift flare once since their repair. But I did not get it to do it after. It had been driven maybe 40 miles in city traffic when it did that. Perhaps after some more usage the car will be perfectly ok. It is now winter stored. I only got to use it for 1 day after Ford did the repairs. Note also that when I used to have the 2-3 shift flare before the repair, it would also often cause the loss of drive and reverse and I could only get the car to move in 3rd until highway speed when I could put it in drive and have it work fine. The next day I could start the car and have everything working fine again. Also, when that flare would happen I would often get drivetrain clunking on downshifts as I slowed to a stop. Since the 2-3 flare after the repair there was no loss of gears and no drivetrain clunking. Do you have any comments on this? It’s been a puzzling problem since 2017! I I hope with some more use come summertime the problem is fixed. Thanks for your time.

      Very possible had a solenoid pack problem, when hot, did the car ever stop moving in all ranges? when cooled down moved again?

      @@GaryFerraro thanks Gary for your reply. I had them change both while they had it apart as I had requested the dealer to bring in both parts prior to my service. Figured if I just change one and the problem persists I will regret not having changed both! When this issue would happen it was usually after being driven for a while but sometimes it used to happen oddly enough when I slowed down to take a turn and then gave it gas. It did not always lose the gears. When started cold everything would be ok again until driven for a while again. They definitely improved it but I was wondering why it would have done that 2-3 shift flare that one time after the repair.

      @@GaryFerraro and yes when this happened sometimes I could pull over and park the car and then put it in drive and it would act as though it was in neutral. I could put it in reverse and it would also act like it was in neutral. The only way I could get it to move then was putting it in 3rd. If I parked it and started it the next day drive and reverse would be back. Again, never a single code. Even had it hooked to high end code reader right after it first happened and no codes at all.

    Do you ever do the lube mod to those? Drill four holes in that washer and drill out the orifice to the next size bigger? How does it work out for you?

    you know how much pressure the transmission oil outlet must have to the cooling system?

    Nice video sir;
    To add my 2cents::
    5r55n/w/s transmissions can be broken down as follows:
    5r55w was only used for one year,the 2002 model year,truck only.
    Most parts catalogs information on overdrive planet to trans model is entirely wrong.
    Here is the ABSOLUTE word!!!
    All 99-02 5r55n and 02 model 5r55w take the small a4ld style Sun gear and planet set.
    All transmissions from 03 up,,car and truck are 5r55s, and use the large 38 tooth Sun gear and planet set.
    A 2002 model year explorer 4.0 or 4.6 can have either a 5r55w or a 5r55s,,that is the only year when both models were used,,early built vehicles got the W trans,,and late built 02 vehicles got the S trans.
    If the trans tag starts with a 1L2P then it is an W model..24 tooth Sun!!
    If the trans tag starts with a 2l2P than it is a S model trans!!! And uses the 38 tooth Sun gear
    The 02 and 03 model W and S trans used the 2L part number solenoid pack..
    The 04 up used the 4L part number solenoid pack,eventually going to a 9L part number in 09 and 10..
    The solenoid pack breaks down as follows::::
    The aluminum ditch plate/ manifold and gasket plate is different between them,,
    The actual bare electronic solenoid assy without the gasket or aluminum plate is the same,,on both solenoid's.
    The pump flow control valve new from Ford is half price of the aftermarket one!!!!
    When rebuilding a 5r55n,,there is no need to ever need to replace the intermediate servo piston as it is rarely used.. and it's over 35.00 don't waste your money,,look at a clutch and band apply chart.
    P0741means the tcc applied but it has to many RPM's slippage.
    P1744 means the tcc never applied at all

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  4 роки тому

      Thank you for that, where do you rebuild?

  • @joej.9584

    What is a Flared shift? Thanks and keep up the good work!

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  7 років тому +1

      When a transmission shifts, its all about timing, as one clutch gets released another one gets applied, so if a clutch or a band is late getting applied, the trans will momentarly go into"neutral" and the RPM will rev high, then the clutch will apply putting it into the next gear

      Also I have a question, i have a customer with an 06' Explorer with the 5R55S that was rebuilt over a year ago (costed him $3000) by some other mechanic and the warranty just went out unfortunately for him. He was pulling a boat through the mountains when all of a sudden he smelled fluid, he pulled over immediately and it turns out it was leaking from the bell housing area. He had it towed to me and i am wondering if in your experience you think it is something fairly simple like the 5 & 7 o' clock pump bolts leaking or maybe a front main seal. I just want to get an idea of what im getting myself into before i dive in head first. Thanks so much.

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  7 років тому

      The vent of the transmission is located in the bell housing, so when fluid was leaking out the vent. it would appear to be leaking from the front pump. Pulling the boat, may have caused the converter to slip creating alot of heat which would make the fluid come out of the vent. What i would do is fill the unit, drive it with a scan tool and look at converter slip to see what going on. For this fluid to come out the vent it had to get very hot. when you run it does it leak still?

    • @joej.9584
      @joej.9584 7 років тому

      Gary Ferraro Wow I am an idiot upon further notice it is actually leaking out from between the trans and the transfer case. Also this vehicle shows the P7041 (torque converter clutch system performance/stuck) code. There's no fluid coming from the bell housing or vent tube.

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  7 років тому

      Not common at all to leak from there, i would clean it down and double check that, there is a vent back there as well, make sure the top of the trans is dry. The 741 code is a converter slip code, thats why the fluid is getting hot, pulling or towing does help either
