What was the most heartbreaking loss in NASCAR you witnessed as a fan?
Michigan 07 to 2013 jimmie Johnson
Gordon's 2002 500
Dale Jr 2011 Coca Cola 600
This Seasons Daytona 500 as a Keselowski fan hurt, and then the interview, never seen Brad so Heartbroken.
For me, as a Truex fan, the 2012 Atlanta race. He had that race in the bag, and it would have been the first time I ever saw my favorite driver win. But a late caution came out and he had a bad pit stop and ended up finishing 4th.
You could make a entire list out of dale sr vs the 500 lol
True. Or one about mark Martin/Carl Edwards and their many runner-ups in the championship
@@laurenjones2578 or one about chase Elliott and 2nd place finishes he had a lot before 2018
@@spiderbhyd3 yeah
Top 20 years of trying and frustration
At Least Dale won it in 1998
When the Denny fans see the title…
*War flashbacks of championship races intensifies…*
Every time I feel down I look up the 2010 spin at homestead and smiles
Just joking
@@austinhiggins4645 same with me minus the jk
@@Skeet8813 dang you cold blooded lol
Every time I feel bad I watch the 2017 martinsville race where chase got wrecked with a massive smile on my face
Denny Hamlin is the master at choking in the last 3 races and it always stems from something stupid he decided to do. Most recent history is 2015 at Martinsville
Number 4 is number 1 in my eyes.
Not only does he lose the race, he also loses the title, and it ends up being the last race he ever drives. There is nothing more cruel in NASCAR history
@@PhilmeisterWRX been saying that for years, this system (and the old chase system) sucks
He was just a coward too scared to admit he fucked himself over so instead left the sport. It was pathetic on Carl, not cruel by NASCAR.
Jerry Nadeau at Sonoma in 2002, had that in the bag until the rear end on his car gave way.
Nadeau was the best at saving an out of shape race car.
That win would have been a desperately needed boost for Petty Enterprises.
Oh yeah - While he had nobody else to blame, I remember Marcos Ambrose throwing away a win at 2010 Sonoma when he didn't need to save gas in the first place ... and remained Winless in Cup.
@@GregBrownsWorldORacing He did win Cup races.
The fact that Davey Allison would die the next year makes that Hooters 500 loss so much more painful.
28 years ago today makes it worst
Bill Elliott lost that same championship by winning the race.
@@christopherwall2121 every Elliot fan ever
" wait so under the playoffs both chase and Bill get a ring praise the racing gods"
but then if he won Kulwicki would’ve had the same type of loss
Yeah it was so sad to know that but it was sad to see Kulwicki die and not anle to defend his championship
When Dibenedetto lost the 2019 Bristol night race, Hamlin fell soooooooo bad for him
I didn’t
@@48waffles36 Damn, u sound fun

@Uke kid it’s a opinion
@@briangriffinfamilyguyfan81 yet you cared enough to comment so…
7:19 coincidentally, that was the second time that day that a car sponsored by the National Guard lost the lead out of the final turn on the final lap.
JR Hildebrand struck the wall on the exit of turn 4 at that afternoon's Indianapolis 500, giving the lead and the victory to the late Dan Wheldon.
@ sideslick1024 Good call! I wondered at the time if anyone had noticed that ironic turn of events. Two National Guard sponsored cars losing on the LAST LAP with the finish line in sight. Both Dale Jr. and JR Hildebrand took their losses like a champ but if I were Hildebrand I would have had nightmares forever. (Guess it didn't pay to be a JR that day.)
WoW Iceberg should pin this comment
no mention of Ricky Rudd getting wrongly black flagged out of a win at Sonoma in 1991?
he did a bump and run in the final corner and davey ended up spun out, but since davey was the future of nascar they treated him like they do with chase elliott today and black flagged rudd so davey could win
@@CBF65 the worst part is it happened during the Imtimidator's reign, where the 3 could spin anyone out and it'd be fine
I mentioned it...absolute robbery...still makes me mad 30 years later.
99% watching this channels subs wasn't alive in 91', let alone watching nascar
@@BoleDaPoleYeah, I was only a few months old.
Ernie Irvan and Sterling Marlin losing championships due to injuries that ended their seasons while they were leading the points.
Ernie and Sterling had many wrecks with each other lol
I'm surprised Montoya at Indy where he dominated but got caught speeding on pit road toward the end wasn't on here.
Yet... if you paid attention... it was part of his intro monologue footage
@@lilwill6985 I was paying attention. I saw it, but I was still expecting to see it on the countdown.
@@AceTrainerBanana I guess that's Iceberg's way of using it as an honorable mention.
He swears on his wife and children he wasn't speeding and NASCAR screwed him. And of course who won that race? Jimmie Johnson
There's gonna be a party when Matty D finally wins one. He's such a likeable guy. Hope he nabs one soon.
Losing the 21 seat today likely hurts his cause.
As much as it kills me to say it, it's not gonna happen at the Cup level.
sadly he didnt win talladega this year :(
I'm sorry to say this just because he's a likeable guy doesn't make it seem like he's going to get a win especially at the cup level
@@ShereeAshleyArend You're right, back in the day... I'd say Dick Trickle was fast and LOVEABLE, but it never happened for him either :{
For Carl you shouldn’t have said the 2016 championship. You should’ve said his career. Idk if you’ve made a vid on his career but if you haven’t, there you go
God that last one. I can still hear the emotion in Benny Parsons’ voice as he exclaimed “and Davey Allison is involved in the crash!”
I'm glad to see I'm not the only who still can hear BP say that everytime I see that clip
2014 AAA Texas 500 for Jeff gordon; pure heartbreak. Also 2007 when Gordon had 30 top 10s.
2004 as well, he dominated that year.
2007 as a whole was heartbreaking for Jeff Gordon… NASCAR’s system full in robbed him. JJ would have only gotten to 2nd in the points without the Chase.
@@johnboy4025 yea that year killed my enthusiasm for the sport
2004,2007,2011,2014 all taken away 8x time champion imo
@@Jeffgordonfan24hesthegoat yea :(
The 2018 Roval was so upsetting for me that I couldn't eat for a day
Jimmie fans Vietnam flash back intensifies
Yeah my dad and I still talk about that race. As MTJ fans that hurt badly
Jerry Nadeau twice - 2001 Atlanta/2002 Infineon (he got hurt in ‘03 and was never able to redeem those)
Guy was such an unlucky driver
And the 2000 Coke 600 where he lost an engine with a great car
Mark Martin in the 500 is the first time I can remember being legitimately sad about a sporting event. I was always a big fan of his, so that one hurt a lot.
Martins loss at Daytona is my top heartbreak without a doubt.
That was the season where everyone was pressuring him to race full-time, he sat out the 5th race as the points leader. It could have been his chance at a first title, but Mark is a man of his word, and he stuck to his plan.
The biggest thing I remember from that race was afterwords, my dad, a Jeff Gordon fan, was pulling just as hard for Martin as I was. When they didn't throw the yellow, everyone in the room was asking "why?"
Scott Riggs losing the 06 Coke 600 will hurt me every day of my life
The Hemric loss was way more heartbreaking than Busch's loss.
Ya Kyle Busch flat out wrecked him. Kyle got karma he deserved
No mine was way worse than Hemrics
Hemric should've won on that Atlanta race..I'm a KyBusch fan but this disheartened me inside. But happy for Kyle Busch having his final moments with NXS with a final win.
That was just good ol karma!
Being a mark Martin fan all my life it was so heartbreaking to see not only lose the 07 500, but to also not win a championship with Hendrick after scoring 5 victories that year…
Winning isn’t everything anyway. I can’t stand these people who think the person with the most wins should be crowned champ. Racing is a ~40 team game every race. Finishing matters.
I would think Newman almost dying in the 2020 500 a few yards away from the finish line would be considered heartbreaking
As a Jeff Gordon fan, 2014 Texas still stings, though it's hard to complain about 93 wins overall. The loss of the 2004, 2007, and 2014 championships on the other hand... I'll never get over them.
As a Joe Nemechek fan, Fontana and Charlotte also still sting all this time later.
Kevin Harvick has been my driver since 2000, but I did feel bad for Mark Martin after the 2007 Daytona 500. I would've loved to see Mark Martin win the 500 in a Chevrolet, but I'm much happier knowing Harvick won the 500 and did it in a Chevrolet.
Honorable mentions: Jeff Gordon 2014 AAA Texas 500, Hut Strickland 1996 Southern 500, Dale Earnhardt Jr. 2006 UAW-Ford 500.
If we were to include divisions other than Cup, Brendan Gaughan 2003 Ford 200, Ron Hornaday 2011 Windstar Casino 350K, Daniel Hemric 2021 Credit Karma Money 250.
Mine was Jeff Gordon losing at Texas in the fall of 2014 and also Jeff losing the 2007 championship after 30 top 10s on the season 😒😒😒😒
As a Tony Stewart fan, the 2008 Daytona 500 still haunts my mind.
Same here. That was the first and last Daytona 500 I watched live. It hurt that much. It was so heartbreaking and you could see just how dejected Stewart was in his post-race interview.
Glad Stewart never won the 500. He could have killed Kenseth there in 2006. Then the whole 2014 thing
@@BrendenNichols Ryan Newman did a great job tho
Jeff Gordon had so many heartbreaking losses...1995 first Pocono, the 1998 Winston All-Star Race, 2007 Watkins Glen, the 2010 Spring Martinsville, Texas, and Phoenix races, and the 2012 Spring Martinsville to name a few.
To this day, I still have a bit of a distaste for Reutimann after that move of his at Martinsville.
2014 Texas
2002 Daytona 500
Matty D Bristol 2019. I Was Sad and Devastated.
He'll win before the playoffs as wished!
I was at the race where Labonte lost, and I was just 8 decked out in 18 gear. Suffice to say, fans felt my heartbreak when I sulked through the parking lot after the race.
Jr Coke 600 and Jr at Kansas broke my heart. Also many races with Khane.
I might be a little biased but Larson Pocono blowing a tire 1 turn away from 4 in a row and putting yourself on a elite list of drivers
Here’s one 2018 Roval: The chance of Johnson finally ending a year long winless streak to advance for an 8th championship after a bad season. And also Truex was running a different scheme for ovarian cancer and had his gf in the pace car before the race
Truex deserved his 2017 championship win rhat year i stunk when Kyle finished 2nd to me because im a fan of his but it was nice seeing Truex win his first title
It was so heartbreaking when Johnson lost the 2018 Roval race
@@timpowell1429 it’s more depressing because it was his last chance to win a race. Plus it was Lowe’s final year.
@@timpowell1429 theres nothing heartbreaking about Jimmie Johnson losing a race.
Jimmie Johnson dont need to advance to more championships, he lost that race on purpose.
I remember watching the 2019 Bristol night race with my grandad. We were both so heartbroken to see Matt DiBenedetto lose that race.
Please, Matt must be in Victory Lane.
Jerry Neadeu at Sonoma should have been on there!
That Carl Edwards moment gives me excruciating pain I was crying so damn hard
From a fan aspect, 2 races had the most heartbreaking losses for me.
1. 2003 Ford 400 - Already a bittersweet week for a multitude of reasons on & off the track for me, this race had that last lap tire cut against Bill Elliott while he was leading his last race as a full-time driver on NASCAR... & no Johnny Benson finishing 4th did not make me feel better.
2. 2008 Cool City Customs 200 - This is the race with the infamous Erik Darnell/Johnny Benson photo finish. Yes I was upset over that, but the actual reason it was infamous is because it was overshadowed by a different last lap incident. That incident resulted in the Ron Hornaday & Kyle Busch fans of my racing group having a shouting match over that last lap & everyone else laughing at that while consoling me.
That Ford 400 was the original McQueen's blown a tire finish. Hurt back then, hurts now.
I'm still pissed about Matty D losing
Everyone is.
Well get use to it because I don't see him winning
Regan Smith got that win stolen. Freaking Tony Stewart.
Freaking NASCAR officials, man
@@warhawk3972 Also true.
Yeah I didn't agree with that call
@@ShereeAshleyArend I had no idea about this until I watched this video, and I saw it happen and I'm like, it's bull.
As a massive dibenedetto fan, the Bristol race was bad, but the talladega lost stung the most for me (I know it’s not on the list, but still). The fact that the same driver denied him his first win TWICE, it hurts
Not really he screw himself in that race. Plus he drove like an idiot and almost dumping Byron.
@@48waffles36 He'll win and we know it.
@@48waffles36 okay hater
Jeff Gordon getting his tire shredded by Brad K at Texas broke my heart
You could make an entire list with Hemric and Dibenedetto.
Hemric does that crap on his own, I don't feel bad for him
@@ShereeAshleyArend If that's really how you feel, sure go with it. Matt has cost himself a couple races too, mainly Dega this year.

Ryan Newman 2020 Daytona 500
Jerry Nadeau 2001 Atlanta
Chase Elliott Martinsville 2017
Kurt Busch 2019 Daytona
Tony Stewart 2012 Talladega
Matt DiBenedetto 2020 Talladega
Kyle Larson 2021 Pocono 1
Sterling Marlin 2002 Daytona
Bill Elliott 2003 Homestead
Why Chase Elliott martinsville🤣
@@markjones2854 you remember
@@ericfording3556 I remember what he did to Keslowski.
Dale Jr Fall Talladega 2015
@@markjones2854 Denny Hamlin spun him with a few laps to go. He was the most hated man in the world after that.
Jeff Gordon 2002 Daytona 500
For some reason I always thought the worst loss Gordon ever had was 2014 Texas. Him vs Keselowski
This title has pre 2018 chase Elliott and matt dibenedetto all over it
I firmly believe, if Davey Allison lived, the record books would be a lot different!
The same could be said for Kulwicki.
@@BrandonP8176 absolutely! But being and owner driver I don't think he would've kept racing as long as Davey would if he had lived.
I don't think it'd be as different as a lot of folks think. I think Davey only had like a year or two left in him before his injuries all caught up with him and/or he started suffering new ones.
They need to make that Atlanta race that alan won his championship into a movie with all those deep deep story lines involved too many to mention which is why it should around a 3hr flick
I've been saying this for months. That is the stuff of epics.
Kyle Larson blowing a tire on the last lap at Pocono was pretty heart breaking.
Denny’s blown tire at Indy last year too
For larson
It was a relief for most after winning three races in a row before that.
50% of me was sad that he didnt do 4 in a row but 50% of me was glad to see Bowman win and just how long Bowman held Larson off was amazing i was at the edge of my seatwaiting to see who won and i even thought Bowman was going to win the race when he was battling Larson
The brickyard where Kyle Busch and Martin Truex took each other out on a restart
Me reads tittle dies of sadness of Mark Martin pitting with one to go
I was going to comment on that same race.
@NolanEP I think so
@@jasonburns9320 sorry
Brendan Gaughan losing the Truck Championship in 2003.
For me, the most heartbreaking moment didn't happen on the track, it was off and you mentioned it at the end. Davey Allison was my very first favorite driver and to this day, it feels like a gut punch everytime someone says his name. I was only 6 yrs old at the time and it still feels like it was yesterday.
1993 Daytona 500 Earnhardt dominated that race and as a 7 year old little boy I was devastated l was so upset after that one. I do remember the 1990 race but I wasn’t as upset about that one as I was 1990
Any day Matty D cries in a race is fucking awesome. Idc what anyone says. Love it.
I remember watching the 2011 Charlotte race live, I was and still am a big Dale Jr. fan, I remember that moment vividly, it was me, my dad, and my stepmom in the kitchen, cooking and not really paying attention, I remember yelling "He's got it, he's got it, he's got it...!" with a couple laps to go, and when I saw him run out of gas on the final lap, I remember screaming "NO!!!!!!!" at the top of my lungs and throwing a couch pillow across the living room, my dad had his hands over his head in shock, and my stepmom ordered me to quiet down, I haven't gotten that emotional over a NASCAR race before or since.
Love the content keep it up!
Chase Elliott 2017 First Data 500.
1. It would have been his first win.
2. He was straight up dumped.
3. He would have been racing for a championship.
4. Had he won the championship, he would have been the youngest champion in nascar history.
Great Video!!
Jimmie Johnson 2018 Roval
Martin Truex Jr 2018 Roval
Great topic! I thought of a few:
Gordon 1998 The Winston
Gordon 1995 Pocono (missed shift race)
Jerry Nadeau 2002 Sonoma
Bill Elliott 2003 Homestead
Rick Mast 1994 Rockingham
Cale/Donnie 1979 Daytona (cuz it makes every other list 😆🤣)
Davey Allison being #1 touched my heart bro! I was a 6 year old Allison fan and ill forever see Ernie spinning in front of him. Then at 7 learned a lot about people dying. Especially your favorite driver. Always in my heart #28
Great video man! Cheers!
The Carl Edwards one happened right in front of me. It still pains me 5 years later
For some reason a big one for me was Dale Jr. running out of gas on the final lap at Vegas in 2014. He was starting off the season really strong with the 500 win and was finishing 2nd a lot. I was so heartbroken.
The Bobby Labonte one still upsets me. I was a Stewart fan growing up so naturally I also rooted for Bobby.
Kurt was faster and would’ve caught him either way.
Nope
Yup
@@njj9555 yup
I don’t think he would’ve
@@baileyreichert6138 they were even but Kurt would’ve held on for the restart if there was one
#7 is the one for me. Matty D is right on the cusp of getting his first win. That Bristol race hurts. He is so close. Hopefully with the wood brothers he gets it soon.
2002 Dodge Save/Mart 350, Jerry Nadeau
After losing his ride at Hendrick, Jerry was on his way to getting his 2nd career win at Sonoma in the #44 at Petty, but a broken rear-end with 2 or 3 laps to go ended his race, finishing 36th
Sadly, Nadeau would have a career ending crash at Richmond the following season.
Daniel Hemric’s career
One a lot of people forget about is the 2001 Atlanta race when Dave Blaney was in the #93 Amoco car. He got the lead with a great car Doug Randolph set up and was pulling the field .3 a lap. EASILY the best(looking) car there. Caution comes out and his pit crew left a rear wheel loose. Wheel came off after a few laps. That was so hurtful for us at Amoco. But his son Ryan got revenge and won the race 20 years later. And I called it on twitter before the race! That place owed the Blaney family, and Ryan ran down Larson and won it.
There's basically a series that I'd love to see here, typically ones where it's a driver vs a track, where these drivers struggled to either get a win but performed well on those said tracks/races
An obvious example is Ryan Newman vs Plate tracks, Dale Sr. Vs the Daytona 500, Jimmie vs Chicagoland and Hamlin vs Homestead(Before 2020)
newman won daytona 500 but true other than that he cant win plate races
Bill Elliott 2003 Homestead should have been on this list.
Absolutely. Towards the top too. Granted he did win the week before, but imagine losing what should of been your LAST win to a cut tire on last lap. FUN FACT, bill started 20th that day at homestead in 2003 and had he held on to win it would of been the 2nd furthest back he started to win. Once a 38th, otherwise 17th is his lowest starting spot to win. Crazy stat. Nearly all of his wins come from front starting spots in top 5.
That's the one where he blew the tire, right????
@@aaronkristofer18 Yup, on the final lap of what was his last race while running full time.
@@D2RCR I remember that, I just couldn't remember if it was '02 or '03. That was such a bummer dude. Bill was still really competitive with Evernham and it would've been a touching Matt Kenseth-esque way to go out.
@@aaronkristofer18 It would’ve been two straight wins to end his full-time career (he won at Rockingham the previous week), which would’ve been a great way to go out,
I was 14 when the Johnson-Labonte finish at Charlotte happened. I thought at the time that it would've been awesome to see Labonte hook Johnson's quarter panel and dump him even though that's not the kind of driver he is. I'm 30 now and I still would like to see that. Johnson didn't need that win and a second place would've served his purposes just as well.
The shift in music from Metallica to Johnny Cash when we hit the #1 pick was just so emotional. Especially since it was Davey Allison. Heck today is even the 28th anniversary of Davey’s death. You did good Jaret by making him the number one pick. R.I.P Davey Allison 😔
Wish you had included the interviews after the race. Would have been a real tear jerker lol
Rusty Wallace getting bumped and runned from Gordon at Bristol was heartbreaking for me. I remember as a kid I was sooo mad at Gordon lol
Jr nation knows to prepare mentally before viewing this video
2007 daytona was the first race i ever watched. decided at the beginning of the race that i was gonna root for mark martin and him losing that race was the most heartbreak i’ve ever felt watching sports. still my favorite driver ever but hearing DW scream that martin got loose in 3 and 4 still breaks my heart every time lol
No kyle larson at Pocono this year? To me that was for sure a heartbreak and it was an important race for him
That's not heartbreaking, that was relief for everyone involved tbh
Hopefully you can do a part 2 of this
Shocked that he didn’t include Dale Jr. 2015 Talladega
I wouldn’t be surprised if half of these are Matty D 😔
The way Matty D lost 2019 Bristol because of No Neck Newman, was the most heartbreaking loss
Some of my takes:
1983 Carolina 500: Bill Elliott, who hadn’t won a race yet, loses to Richard Petty by mere feet. I can’t confirm but I believe Elliott was visibly discouraged in the post-race interview (this was his sixth runner-up finish), and the pit reporter tried to cheer him up. But maybe I’m thinking of a different race.
1986 Miller High Life 400: greatest short track race ever. Imagine you crash early in the beginning, only to rally with the team, lap everyone and find Earnhardt between you and victory. The battle gets as unhinged as a Twitter debate. Then you send it into the turn and come out on top, only for Earnhardt to dump you on the backstretch out of sheer spite. That’s what happened to Darrell Waltrip. But if it’s any consolation, Earnhardt lost control and crashed too.
1987 The Winston All-Star race: yeah we all remember the Pass in the Grass, but what’s not remembered is that Elliott’s car was the best, but the aggression between the both of them caused Elliott to blow a tire. He made sure to show his disdain after the race.
1989 The Winston All-Star race: Wallace and Waltrip are battling towards the end and Wallace sends Waltrip spinning in the grass. It seemed to be an accident but it painted Waltrip as a martyr and Wallace as a villain. There was a fistfight too.
2012 Pocono 400: Mark Martin was a few laps away from becoming the oldest driver to ever win a race, and also gaining his first win in 3 years, but Joey Logan’s bumped him out of the way and took away one of his last real shots at a win in his aging career.
And let’s not forget the last two Talladega races: DiBenedetto has come so close and I feel so sorry for him.
If you ever do another one of these list, I’d suggest Hut Stricklin and the 1996 Southern 500.
28 years to the day. RIP Davey
Harvick missed the playoffs last year because a faster Erik Jones (who was being kicked out of his ride the next season) was told not to pass his teammate because it would put Harvick in the Championship 4 and kick Hamlin out I believe. That was worse than losing a race.
Dammit hoss, Davey at the end. I teared up that was my dads favorite driver. I was a earnhardt fan. But there's no way he would be a 7 time champion. If Davey lived. Thanks hoss for all you do for the history of Nascar.💯❤
My most heartbreaking are Martin at Daytona and Pocono, Rudd at Sonoma (1991 AND 2005) and Kansas, and Labonte at Charlotte.
7:16
I'll never forget Dale running out of gas at Charlotte that night. The Indy 500 was that morning, and it ended the same way. Last lap, coming out of turn 4 the leader ran out of gas. 2 races, 1100 total miles, and they both ended with guys being about half a mile short on fuel.
#7 really hurts me the most

Regan Smith won that race. We all know it.
hey the iceberg good video as usual but i tell people this about davey allison if he would have went on i think he (allison) would be where jeff gordon is now
#1 could've gone 2 ways. Say Allison did win the championship that year. That means the same circumstances would've been for Kuwiki.
harvick, 2020, martinsville, spinning out kyle busch to try to get 1 more spot to get into the championship 4, despite having a season for the history books beside that
The first ever race could be an honorable mention. Glenn Dunnaway won the first ever race by three laps, but due to stiffened springs in the car, he was disqualified and placed dead last. This was the only time he was ever in contention to win, and even worse, he finished last _again_ the very next race. He's unfortunately become a very forgotten driver since.
Jimmie Johnson Chicago land in the cup seires his entire career
Or Watkins Glen or Kentucky
Or Michigan. He eventually won there but had a period where he either ran out of fuel, blew up or just came up short
Jimmie Johnson has had more than enough luck to offset those individual races.
@@njj9555 who said I was a Gordon fan I think you got the wrong Austin
@@njj9555 you don't gotta delete your comment it was just a mistake
I was at that Charlotte race in 2011 standing up cheering Junior on. My heart sunk when he lost. I was so dejected driving back to the hotel.
You could do a top 10 list like this just featuring mark Martin heartbreak losses
You didn’t put Bill Elliott’s blown tire in his last race in the #9 car at Homestead on this list?!? A lot of the guys on this list went on to win again, but Bill had his last shot to go out on top literally go up in flames. My ten-year-old self locked myself in my bedroom and cried for an hour. Still hurts seeing replays of it.
It could have been #1 on this list, honestly.
