- Batman Beyond is an American superhero animated television series developed by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Alan Burnett and produced by Warner Bros. Animation in collaboration with DC Comics as a continuation of the Batman legacy. The series began airing on January 10, 1999, and ended its run on December 18, 2001.
Depicting a teenaged Batman in a futuristic Gotham City under the tutelage of an elderly Bruce Wayne, Batman Beyond is set in the chronological future of the DC animated universe, and serves as a continuation of both Batman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures.

Ah Batman Beyond, one of the most overlooked and underused properties of DC as far as the screen goes.
Return of the Joker>Batman begins
At least people rember it unlike project zeta
Sooo true!!! 😂
Static Shock, though mostly because I used to read the old Milestone comics that inspired that series.
I adore the Batman Beyond episode of Justice League Unlimited-- the series finale, "Epilogue"! It was fantastic! Especially the part about Ace from the Royal Flush Gang!
RIP Kevin Conroy; no matter how much time passes he'll always be the best Batman.
Cree Summer is a voice-over legend who doesn't get nearly enough credit.
Thank you. She’s been around for so many peoples childhoods. She’s just incredible.
I liked Batman Beyond a lot. Absolutely loved Batman Beyond: Return Of The Joker!
That film had the creepiest Joker ever, in my opinion!
I actually liked the electrocution death of The Joker more than original the Tim shooting him with the gun in the wake of Columbine.
I have mixed feelings about Batman Beyond (meaning, some things I liked about it, others I didn't care for so much.) *BUT...* The *ONE* thing I absolutely *ADORED* about it is, it had one of the most (IMNTBHO) awesome, badass villainesses in DC history, "Inque." The moment she first appeared onscreen, I was like, "Oh my god...! I think I'm in love!" (I know, I know; I'm weird...)
@Shin Shaman It is impossible to take your 'comment' seriously, as the lack of proper grammar, punctuation & sentence-structure makes it utterly incoherent and incomprehensible. It can therefore be dismissed as nothing more than the meaningless, random babblings of a madman (which it is.)
@Shin Shaman I liek turtles
I loved this show as a little girl, especially the sci-fi/high tech elements added to the plots/stories.
I'm currently watching through my bluray of Batman The Animated Series and noticing a lot of parallels between certain episodes
Will Friedle tells some great stories about his time recording for Batman Beyond. He was still filming Boy Meets World at the same time, but sometimes had to step away for one of the ensemble sessions. Imagine skipping a day at work and telling everyone (in the late 90s) that you have to go read some lines in a recording booth standing between Luke Skywalker and Batman. All perfectly normal.
To say nothing of the fact he was also Dating Jennifer Love Hewitt around that time too...
Well there was the time on Boy Meets World where his character said "I am Batman"
You should have mentioned that the Justice League Unlimited episode 'Epilogue' serves as a finale for Batman Beyond.
#KeepEpilogueASecret
@@StubzTurner nothing was spoiled.
Epilog is garber and should be forgotten.
@@StubzTurner I see, you watch j's reviews too.
I don’t consider “Epilogue” canon even if it officially is. It was such a poorly written retcon origin. It was like really bad fan fiction.
In Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, after Tim Drake killed Joker, and tears just start pouring. That legitimately hurt me, mentally.
Batman Beyond was one of the best Timmverse productions. Fantastic original characters and great development on characters from BTAS. Love the the anime Blade Runner look of Neo-Gotham and that Batsuit? Just beautiful.
"A lot has changed since you're old Joker was away. New Gotham, new rules, even a new Batman."
This movie always puts s smile on my face.
I've lost count of how many time i've played air guitar on Batman Beyond's intro.
Over here it was known as "Batman of the Future"
Yeah I think that's what it was called in Latin America, Europe, Asia and Australia
Can we all agree how fantastic RETURN OF THE JOKER is?!
It was awesome!
My favorite part is where Terry explains to Joker that "Bruce never laughed BECAUSE YOU WERE NEVER FUNNY!"
I have the DVD.
BB was a great show.
Lots of interesting new villains.
And no political SJW posturing.
Terry getting into Joker’s head is still the best. Joker never has been hit do hard by anyone.
Honestly, it's my favorite Batman movie.
The fact a live action movie of this doesn't exist is BEYOND me!
Dan : "Here's everything you need to know about Batman Beyond"
Awesome Batman Beyond theme song: "Am I a joke to you?"
Also despite its futuristic look, the opening title sequence had no CG elements. It was a mix of cell animation and physical models. They actually sculpted old Bruce's head and filmed it on a turntable for the shot where he turns menacingly towards the screen.
@@lukedodson3267 that's pretty cool and clever. That intro sequence is pretty dark for a kids show but it's so good
Pretty much the entire soundtrack for Beyond rocked hard. But the theme is iconic and will always hold a special place in my heart as one of the best Batman themes.
Batman Beyond's inclusion in Justice League Unlimited was left out.
Good.
Yah, they did such a good job covering everything else but left out mentioning the one thing that bookends the entire series.
Probably didn't want to spoil it. Hard to talk about JLU Epilogue. Without giving away one of the biggest twists in the DCAU.
@@Webbman76 makes sense, but it's been 14 years :/ spoilers should be okay now
@THE UMBRELLA CORPORATION-UFO's I was referring to the episode Epilogue, the episode that gives closure to Batman Beyond.
I still say Robert Pattison should've been hired to play Terry for a Batman Beyond movie, and getting Michael Keaton (or honestly any of the other good ones that are old enough) to play old man Bruce Wayne.
Not making Batman Beyond is WB leaving cash on the table. Keaton would be cool, but I'd love to get Clint Eastwood as Bruce Wayne.
Or Kevin Conroy
@@rickmease9531 Clint Eastwood would make a great old man bruce Wayne
Would like to see Dylan Minnette as Terry McGinnes , he could be cool Tim Drake too
@@robertfourhell2746 first impresion on the guy: I would really like him to be Tim
"Fighting crime, in a future time." C.O.P.S., great reference. And it does seem like Neo-Gotham would be a perfect place for the Central Organization of Police Specialists.
Still hoping we get that live action movie with Michael Keaton as an old Bruce Wayne one day.
Stubz Turner I would love if Kevin Conroy as Bruce
I would prefer an animated one. More in the style of Spiderverse. It would really suit the Neo Gotham style. They could get away with more unique action that you couldn't do with real actors
@@arielgonzalez9993 We kind of got that with Crisis - seeing Kevin Conroy as old!Batman, even one separate from the DCAU and the Arrowverse, was pretty damn awesome
Mandisa W it was fine, but I felt they didn’t utilize him enough as I would’ve hoped
@@arielgonzalez9993 Well, yeah, but he got a pretty notable role among so many quick-cameos. I think his crossover version of Batman was just as impactful as Tom Welling's crossover-Supes. He even got an action scene - not bad for an "old man" LOL.
This year is officially closer to when Batman Beyond takes place than when it was released.
OtakuUnitedStudio That’s the problem with stories set in the future that aren’t set far enough away in time. And also why it needs to be part of another timeline within a multiverse.
@@darthpaul99 So what? I like when stories are confident enough to have their own timelines. This is the definitive future of the DC Animated Universe, no need to chicken out with alternate timelines. 2039 doesn't have to look all Blade-Runner-ish anyway, Gotham doesn't exist so it's not like we're making predictions on what a future Gotham will be like. It's fun
You’re pretty strong for some clown who thinks he’s Batman.
I AM BATMAN!
It was at that point Terry truly became Batman
Nitpick: Ace was actually recordings of the sound engineer's dog. Frank Welker DID voice a hyena man though.
Thank you for the examination on Batman: Beyond. It was a great show, and its Return of the Joker could have been even more graphic ... had some scenes been left in.
I'm sure everyone here already knows, but it's interesting that the "wrap-up" of the Batman: Beyond near the end of Justice League Unlimited wasn't mentioned.
"Fighting Crime in a Future Time."
Niiiiice.
Shriek was such a great villain. I wish he'd been folded into the comics in some fashion.
Hate it when some people call Terry 'Batman Beyond'. That's like calling the Doctor 'Doctor Who'.
Awesome video, Dan.
That's just to differentiate, plus it's percectly acceptable to say Doctor Who, the show did it for decades.
Or calling Static "Static Shock"
Well done! I love Batman Beyond! It came at the perfect time for me and has to have one of the best opening sequences of any cartoon series. I had the whole series on DVD but jumped on the chance to get the recently released Blu-ray set and am happy I did. This is one of the few shows, like the original Batman Animated Series, that holds up incredibly well today. Still keeping hope alive that DC Collectibles will somehow give us a 6" scale Batman Beyond Batmobile to go with that incredible Batman Beyond Terry, Bruce and Ace they released. Keep up the great work!
"Tools of his own making..." *LAUGHS IN MORGAN FREEMAN*
Nice pfp
You forgot to mention that the last episode of Justice League was actually the Ending Story of Batman Beyond showing that Terry McGinnis was actually Batman son
Got the bluray set and a hot ones hot sauce set for Christmas from my wife. BEST.GIFTS.EVER!!!!
LOVED Batman Beyond. It's a premise that feels like it almost shouldn't work but still does. And even though Terry McGinnis may not have been Bruce Wayne's son initially (though "Epilogue" retcons that), he definitely earns the right to wear the Batsuit. I always felt that Warner Bros. could make a Batman Beyond live action film work. They could even get Michael Keaton to return to play Old Bruce, but they could always keep his past exploits as Batman vague enough that the movie didn't have to adhere so closely to the continuity of then '89 movie and Batman Returns, so they could do a Return Of The Joker kind of story at some point and not have to acknowledge that Joker dropped to his death at the end of the '89 movie.
I wasn't a fan at first, but eventually came around. You are quite correct, the stories and the vision created won us over. Love the last line, one Batman ends, another Batman begins
Love the C.O.P.S. reference
"It's crime fighting time."
What was good about Beyond and Static was they told NEW stories, GOOD stories, instead of just re-hashing old ground. They didn't just give Terry new versions of classic villains, he got his OWN rouge's gallery. I'd love to see them do similar things with their movies and comics. Instead of just re-re-re-re-re-rebooting the DC universe yet again, try some NEW material.
Thank you for posting and sharing this Dan.
At least Batman Beyond has a flying car future. (Old man shakes fist at future now his present)
Special mention to the Akira esque motocycle chase in the pilot. Batman Beyond providing as segeway into 'What's Akira?' for a whole generation.
And one more mention of how to brooch a Barbara/Batman romance right. Let the audience's imagination do the work for you.

WB, GIVE US MORE BATMAN BEYOND - animated series, films, games, comics, the rest of the soundtracks that never got released, all of it. And make it good.
Yes
Batman Beyond is my second favorite Kids’ WB! show, closely following Pokemon. Both arrived for me in early 1999 and quickly made Kids’ WB! my favorite network and lineup. Great job folks and the promise of Batman Beyond being included in Crisis On Infinite Earths: Part 2 coming up on physical media makes me think we haven’t seen the end of future Bruce, Terry McGinnis, Dana, Ace, Terry’s family, Max and everyone. You folks are fantastic and keep it going please!
This was such a great show. Thanks for the video!
Awesome video,
Thanks so much.
Great work!!!
I actually preferred Batman Beyond over the original series.
I did too, except the original series had better villains than Beyond.
A bit surprised you didn't mention the epilogue at the end of Justice League Unlimited that explained what happened to Terry after the original series and how his Batman was REALLY born.
Terry didn't just become Batman but he also took over for Alfred in a lot of ways. He's one of those successor characters that people mostly approve of. I think it has to do with the large timeskip but still.
Thank you for keeping "Epilogue" a secret... #KeepEpilogueASecret
One of the best things about this show was how Kim Possible would go on to spoof it in "The Fearless Ferret". Will Friedle teaming up with Adam West to lovingly lampoon his own show was a real treat.
On another note, Return of the Joker is my favorite Batman movie. It does a great job of filling in the gaps of why Bruce retired and what happened to the Clown Prince between series, but it also represents a culmination of Terry's time as the Bat. By the end he proves that he's not Bruce Wayne, but he's just as worthy of the mantle. The way he deconstructs Joker is something that Bruce could never do, and it's what ultimately lures Joker into his final defeat. In my mind that movie makes the perfect series finale for the show.
The uncut RotJ is one of my favorite Batman stories, period.
I am still impressed how DARK some themes in Batman Beyond could get, with grim consequences to villains, teen agnst (that's still relatable today) to even the origin of Terry Mcguinnes ( watch Epilogue in Justice League Unlimited!! OMG What a treat!)
The show was known in some circles as Batman: Bad End because of how many of the villains ended up.
well done, Dan !!
You forgot to mention how Static-X a prominent metal bands music was used for The Return of the Joker and they even did a music video for it.
thanks for the video.
Iiiiiiiiiiii just really like this channel.
I could hear the into song playing as they showed it in the background. Batman Beyond's soundtrack was banging!
I discovered your channel about a month ago and - as a child of the 80's - absolutely LOVE it, especially the "History of..." videos that you make. I rewatch a lot of them frequently, in fact, as they're fun, informative and very nostalgic for me. I have a request to make though: would you be able to update your "History of" playlist to include the newest episodes that are currently not in that playlist? Also, is it possible to "reverse" the playlist order, as surely logically it would make sense to have the oldest episode as "episode 1"? Sorry to be a pain, but I use that playlist a *lot* and it would be great to have it in the correct order and up-to-date. I currently have my own "duplicate" of that playlist I made that I use, but having your official one "fixed" would be much better! Regardless, keep up the awesome work/videos!
never thought of batman being a detective.
I was addicted to this when I was a kid. Wizard did a interview with Bruce Timm at the time, and he dropped they were developing a 'beyond' version of a famous comic book team. The interviewer spent the whole thing trying to convince Bruce to reveal that it was the JLA. It wasn't. It was an homage to the Fantastic 4 that show up in the first season as villains. The JLBeyond appeared way later. And yeah, I spent the last 20 years with things I've read in Wizard going through my mind.
A very good video with one slight oversight. You forgot to mention that in the Justice League Unlimited series there is an episode called epilogue which I believe is considered the unofficial ending of Batman Beyond since we meet up with Terry McGinnis in his 30s and Amanda Waller and her 60s.
I liked that an episode of Justice League Unlimited wrapped up the Batman Beyond story, explaining the coincidences of the paralleled between McGinnis and Wayne.
That Project Cadmus originally manipulated McGinnis to be the next Batman in a plan fittingly called Project Batman Beyond, that McGinnis is genetically Wayne’s son through manipulation of dad’s sperm’s genetic material. Waller explained despite being against Batman for decades, hating and fearing the concept of vigilantes, she realized in the end that the world needed Batman and planned for his replacement. Still, in the end she couldn’t go through with it due the more violent parts and cancelled the project, but tragedy happened anyway and McGinnis became Batman just the same. The episode does it better justice than my hastily typed description on my phone late at night.
A Batman Beyond video game would be pretty cool!
Great show
I have to admit. I was one of the many "haters", when it first came out. Even the name... "How do you go from Bruce Wayne, such a cool name, to Terry McGinnis". But like many things, I kept on watching it did happen like you said. The stories depicted were very well written, until I became a fan. Awesome video. Keep up the GREAT work, guys!
@00:24 Imagine the Craigslist or Carrearbuilder ad for job description
Cyberpunk Batman is one of my favorite Batman variants
What's great about Batman Beyond is that it began as an idea about nothing that was turned into something.
“ I LOVE BATMAN BEYOND “” I WAT IT BACK “
Terry McGuinness
Want!!!!
A favorite of mine as a kid. Probably my first exposure to cyberpunk
Holy Bat🦇tastic, great bat🦇review‼️
I so want a Batman Beyond live action film which reprises Michael Keaton as Bruce/Retired Batman, and brings back the Danny Elfman musical score. I have no idea who should play Terry/Batman or Maxine/Robin in this hypothetical film.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
@@mrgreatbigmoose Yeah he might have been a great choice at one time, but I think WB would try to go for someone a bit younger at this point.
I nominate Jacob Bertrand from Cobra Kai
Correction, it was the squel no one knew they wanted.
I feel called out by the title! I was too young to know i could ask, but i still liked it!
You forgot to mention the Justice League Unlimited episode which is, effectively, a Batman Beyond story that gives us the in-universe backstory of Terry and his relationship to Bruce. Turns out, it was all Amanda Waller's doing. [Insert "Amanda All Along" theme song here]
I love the Batman Beyond Future Knight action figure, cool figure
Batman Beyond good story! Deserves a movie.. Thanks
I loved Batman Beyond more than my kids did LOL
Sir Sim, Esquire- my high school aged son, with the last name of McGinnis, won’t give this show a chance, at all.
The soundtrack of this show is just amazing, it’s like another character, telling the story.
I loved it when it originally aired, I loved it again when it came out on DVD, and now I’m going to go order it on Blu-ray!
And with Damian Wayne now in the picture, and Grayson having worn the Bat cape on several occasions, those waters have gotten even murkier for Terry McGuiness.
He got his ending at the Justice League Unlimited series finale tho. You guys missed that part. Was a big role, finds out he's Bruce's test tube baby
Batman Beyond and Spiderman Unlimted both were awesome and their intros rocked too. Batman Beyond is almost as good as Batman the animated series.
"Hmm... The ears are a bit too long and I miss the Cape but not bad not bad at all bat fake"
I think Ian Somerhaulder (Damon Salvator from Vampire Diaries) would make a perfect older Terry Mcginnis from Epilogue. If they did ever do a BB it should start with the death of Bruce Wayne or just one episode where Bruce dies and passes the baton in his death bed. The Gotham underground gets word that new bats has lost his mentor. Gotham gets more dangerous and turf wars break out with crime bosses and new Super Villians showing up. Even a beef with him and an older night wing who still feels slighted for not getting the cowel and the Barbra Gorden affair
Terry being batman but completely on his own as Gotham begins to burn...cool start for a series. And have Conroy play the older Bruce just like on Chrisis on Infinate earth.
2:07 Myaaah, I see what you did there, see?
I loved batman beyond. One of DC's best animated projects.
This is still a series I would to make a comeback 🤔 perhaps with Terry a little bit older maybe Bruce gone or not and definitely tackling the fact that Bruce is Terry’s father 🤔
Great video Mr Larson, Producer Greg 👍🏽✌🏽
There was a music video to this movie. It was performed by Static-X. Complete with the lead singer having bat ears in his hair.
Wayne Static? Haven't seen it, yet

Batman Beyond is one of my favorite underrated show I ever watched since when I was a kid I still loved it to this day because of characters, crime fighting, villains, the legend Bruce Wayne and even the best of all, The Return of Joker and honestly I haven't seen it for years and years and now I wanna see it
Yeah, I thought it was a stupid idea when I first heard of it, watched it anyway and was never more pleased to be wrong.
Beyond was great as a kid. Loved that cyberpunk influence in the designs 👌
I can't be the only person that would LOVE Rocksteady Studios to create a Batman Beyond game based on the mechanics of Arkham City. Call it Earth-303 or whatever, but that would be absolutely astounding.
Couldn't get into this cartoon, but I was already past the target audience age. Thanks for the video
I loved this Batman. It was great. Need a movie of this
Oh god that pic of Friends with Batman in it made me unexpectedly laugh so hard I think I pulled something. That sounds like a name of a show Batman & Friends.
We still need a “really” great Batman Beyond action figure.
The one thing that impressed me the most of that show was that they established everything the suit could do at the start, and they never strayed from that. I was fully expecting a new gadget would be revealed every episode, but nope!
I remember it took a long time for this show to finally grow on me, and by the time it did it was cut off.
Brilliant
As a kid when this show/character came out, I thought, 'how does his cowl cover his mouth work?'
As an adult I still don't know
This will never take off again. This project was a child of its times. A byproduct of what is perceived as "cool" in the late 90s/early 2000s. The Bruce Wayne story is a timeless classic. As fresh as it was created in the 30s.
i remember when it came out because i was so excited abd so pissed i had to work. i remember recording it and feel in love with that first episode. it was such good storytelling and i loved will on boy meets world and as the voice of ron stoppable on kim possible. i eagerly watched the show whenever i could, then used....a thing...to download the episodes (and got a virus for it) and then bought the dvds from target when i saw them. the inly character that never did it for me was max it just felt like they were trying to hard instead of introducing her in a better way... and a less stupid one at that
I bought a CD with music from the show in 1999. I'm not much for techno, but I dig that opening intro!
The last I knew, the comic was still around. Terry's brother gets involved as Robin :P
I didn't watch this one when it came out as in my late teens I got kind of precious about stuff and he wasn't "My Batman". That was a mistake though, and I'm glad I saw the error of my ways.
I'm excited now because McFarlane is releasing a Batman Beyond themed series this year, which means not just Terry, but some rogues.
Great video as always. Stay safe out there!
I like the static shock episode that crossed over into the future where he met beyond.btw, can u talk bout static shock, superhuman samurai syber squad,vr troopers,& mystic knights of tir na nog?
