Porkchop Sandwiches!: The History of the GI Joe PSA Parodies
Вставка

- Where were you when you first heard the term Porkchop Sandwiches?
One of the first viral video sensations on the internet holds a place close to our heart because it involves GI Joe. Back in the early 2000's a bunch of re-edits of original GI Joe cartoon PSA's were uploaded to the internet and they got a lot of attention.
They crashed a website and initiated a lawsuit towards the creator by Hasbro.

The first time I saw Porkchop Sandwiches, I can honestly say it was the absolute hardest I’ve ever laughed.
BAM. Same here. It was bizarrely hysterical.
Same, it's extremely funny
Me too, man. That and his erratic yelling.
Same!
Same, it will never get old
I still think that The PSA parodies haven't reached the level of recognition and cultural presence they deserve.
Every time I see a dog by itself in public I'm like "Aw hell naw, wassup dawg?"
I say this to my roommate’s dog on the regular. Nobody in the house gets the reference, but I do. It’s funny to me at least. “Ah hell nah what’s up dog”
Every. Time.
Yes! I'm glad I'm not the only one.
Except I've no discretion - I do even when humans are walking them.
I don't even acknowledge the humans, just the dog...
Yep, same. Except it's anytime I see any dog.
My cross country team introduced me to the PSAs back when they were on a janky DVD ripped from the internet (circa 2005 or '06?), and every time a dog would bark at us as we ran by, we'd say the line too. XD
Pork chop sandwiches has been a constant non-sequitur in my social group for years. My heart skipped a beat when I saw this video. People remember!
Mine was always "Hey kid I'm a computa!"
For us it was "Look at all those pretty little hats..."
"Who wants a body massage?"
Ditto
Someone I knew said "porkchop sandwiches" at work and was instantly accused of being racist toward Puerto Ricans somehow, and this was over a decade ago.
In college my dorm loved to pull the fire alarm in the middle of the night. Without fail, someone would shout "Porkchop sandwiches!" as we ran out of our rooms and the building.. which would only lead to the rest of the skit being recited as we stood out in the cold waiting for the OK to come back inside.
My God, did that smell good.
This story warmed my heart.
You aint cookin'..
That's the lamest thing I ever heard
We would have been friends in college haha
I feel old now that we are starting to study the history of memes...
Steve Martegani gotta get some waffle fries.
“Memetics is the study of shared ideas, and it’s where the word “meme” first appeared.”
A Matter of Facts, a rap song by The Stupendium
Steve Martegani maybe it’s because deep down we actually miss all the Nazi and Hitler jokes.
Honestly, I'd love to see a video doc like this on Fabulous Powers or that infamous Juggernaut dub (y'know, the one that inspired that dreadful scene from X3). I feel like at least one of them would have an interesting backstory (as FP is a full video outside of the meme music video and it feels like there is more to it).
Soon there will be classes in Community Colleges discussing memes and hownit shaped history.
1. G.I. Joe
2. Tom & Jerry
3. Spongebob Squarepants
Will be just a few of the topics.
"I'm a computer." is my favorite PSA.
"Stop all the downloading!"
Help computa
Hey KID!
They are all hilarious but "Get that kid off my ice, you little wankers" is by far the best. Subjectively of course.
Hey kid. Stop all the downloadin'
I saw these in my early 20s. I'm now 43 and they are still hilarious
Yep. We got old. It doesn't seem that long ago. What happened to us?
You and I both, buddy!
As a child of the 80s, these PSA parodies are pure gold… specially Porkchop Sandwiches and the reggae. I watched them back in 04 in ebaums and they still make me laugh uncontrollably
It was a good way to crap on our childhoods having seen these firsthand 40 years ago.
The reggae one had me initially scratching my head before I died laughing. "Wait, what? The kid just belched and they're looking at bottles in the bathroom. I don't und..." (Unintelligible reggae lyrics) All I got from that was "Italian bus rider,"
If I've achieved nothing else as a father, my eight-year-old now routinely (and randomly) says, "Hey kid! I'm a computer."
You win.
🔥🔥🔥
Hell, I'm in my late 30's and I do the same.
You did well.
That's how I call for my dog to get inside the house.
"Mr. Body Massage Machine GO."
"Uhhhhhhh what the hell?"
"BODY MASSAGE."
I say this all the time at work if we are tossing stuff around.
Let’s ramp it!
I still say, "Problem solved," in a deep voice when I fix something.
I can't believe it's been 2 decades! My friends and I were literally doubled over when watching these.
"Johnny, does your mom hangout at dockside bars?"
Dockside bars!?
Kris Nelson Johnny do you play baseball?
Perfect for Father's Day.
I remember when I first saw it my mind went to the pilot from Airplane! "Johnny do you play baseball?" "Do you like movies about gladiators?"
"Give him the stick! DON'T GIVE HIM THE STICK"
"You're not my dad"
"OOOOOOOHHHHHHHH"
Gets brought up regularly anong my brothers and friends.
@CallOfDrewthulhu I believe that's the line too
flip it, skip it, see ya later, bye
its " do you know who my dad is? "
Same with my siblings! If I'm within earshot it's my solemn duty to say "OOOOOOHHHHHH!" on cue no matter what.
That, and the one where the kid falls off the cliff and the only line is "sheeeeeeeEEEEIIII...G.I. Joooooe". Comes up during every holiday gathering.
* Do you know my dad, not you're not my dad.
It's kind of blowing my mind that these are so old to have a documentary about them
it's kind of blowing my mind you think this is a documentary
@@jerkchickenblog what else would you call a video called "the history of GI Joe PSA Parodies"
Documentaries don't have to be on serious topics and they don't have to be long. All they have to do is provide a factual record of something from history.
The PSA about how to tread water literally saved my life when I was 6 years old.
I slipped down a river bank into deep and fast-moving water and panicked. Before my head went under water, that PSA played itself out in my brain and moved my body like a marionette. Thank God for children's programming.
GIIIIII IIiIIIIIII JooooooEeeeee
@@jbell254 No lie 🤠
That's awesome.
Nice. Would be great if kids’ programming was still like that.
You were indoctrinated into survival, my friend
Ahh, I remember my coworkers introducing me to those, probably shortly after they started arriving on UA-cam.
.. a year later I was diagnosed with cancer. So I had a steady supply of short clips that could make me laugh through any treatment I was enduring as needed, which was fantastic at times.
(Bet you thought I was going with 'that post gave me cancer', but I know posts can't give anyone cancer. And knowing.. is half the battle)
MakotoKamui...had cancer surgery and everything is negative so far. Being able to laugh is a good thing
Hope you both are doing ok today!
Knowing is half the battle. GI Jooooooooooooooeeeeeeeeeeeeee
The best one is the one where the child just falls off the cliff. It doesn't have any one liners, but its just distills the essence of the parodies into a simple 7 second clip.
SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!
My favorite! I couldn't stop watching that one!
Still very effective in its intended message, except it cuts to the action right away. We used to pause it midway to look at the kid's expression.
"Jamaican man fuss, me nearly dead with laugh, I watching people rush a door like harbour shark, check it fun time deh ya time for the bus rider, sunshine deh ya a time for the bus rider, sunshine deh ya a time for the bus rider, fun time deh ya a time for the bus rider, No!"
HOLY SHIT THANK YOU YOU ARE MY NEW HERO!
Doc
I don't think I can do that.
You betta bring it!
Thank you Big Sonny!!
Yeah, we should totally hit it again, but I get first dibs on it.
Porkchop Sandwiches is my fave.
"My god did that smell good!"
So I guess he forgot all about that house fire.
My favorites are:
The random dude outside the kitchen window singing reggae music.
The dude with the Australian accent who put some kid in a refrigerator then starts talking gibberish.
Kills me everytime.
Those PSAs were a big formative part of my GI Joe collecting, and their influence continues today. I can't look at a Roadblock figure without asking if anyone wants a body massage, or a Gung-ho without calling him "Mr. Lafitte" and offering to show him an ollie.
Give him the stick....
Don't give him the stick!!
"Oooooooo!"
@@Jason_Quinn Do you know my dad?
For many, many years, I have had "Pork chop sandwiches! We're all dead! GTFO!" as much generic 'incoming mechanics' macro for FFXIV. It's so wonderful when someone else recognizes it and laughs.
Excerpt from an old Twisted Toyfare Theater segment.
Duke: And knowing is half the battle.
Spider-Man: What's the other half?
Duke: VIOLENCE!
Logan Cracraft I combine Ignorance is bliss and knowing is half the battle. I’m smart like that. ;)
OMG i remember that 😅 one of the funniest jokes TTT ever came up with 😂
I recall that. We quote it often.
A Pie chart once depicted "The Battle" as follows:
Knowing - 50%
Red Lasers - 25%
Blue Lasers - 25%
Wait. Was that the same one where Spidey notes they'd be more effective is they lowered their guns to aim *at* their enemies. With the reply "you monster! we don't play like that!"
@@lynngreen7978 That was the one! Classic.
Now that Lightning Lou Albano PSA has possibly THE MOST TRUE line ever spoken in a drug PSA. "If you do drugs you go to Hell, before you die." It's painful how true this is 😢
Man, VHS players in the early to mid 2000's. What a different era that was.
Yep. I had a DVD player since 2002, but I was still using VHS to record and play episodes of LOST right up to 2006. Recordable DVD players didn't really get cheap until around then, and by then most people were switching over to DVR or even official streaming.
@@starwarsunfiltered7848Most people had a DVD player once the PS2 came out (2002?). That was one of it's biggest selling points; why it dwarved the GameCube in sales.
For the same going rate to buy a DVD player, you could get a cutting edge gaming system that doubled as your DVD player.
I had a cheap Sharp unit in my dorm, and oddly we used it mostly to put out stereo audio for the little Trinitron TV. I had the RCA out plugged into a set of Altec Lansing computer speakers with a disproportionately large subwoofer.
"Daammn... these beats are so fresh! Snnnaaap!"
FUCKIN OLD SCHOOL
To this day I'm still wondering if he is talking about beats or actual beets.
I always thought it said "these peeps are so trashed" 🤣
"Are you Buz Lightyear? I love your movies!"
"...Today in 2019, the nostalgia dependent intellectual property infringement has become so normalized as a source of content It hardly even registers that that's what it is. And while it may not fit the ideal of brand that's being represented; they could not come up with a better, cheaper system of fan engagement and community building... if they tried."
Great closer.
You forgot the "Porkchop sandwiches, indeed." At the end
If they fought the C&D letters back in they day they definitely would have prevailed - parody has a LONG history of being a protected aspect of the Fair Use clause of copyrighted material. Yet the scumbag media companies continue to send out C&D letters regardless (read: most copyright claims on UA-cam) in the hopes that the fear of legal repercussions will help jam "brand perception & representation integrity" down consumers throats.
Bums me out Hasbro managed to temporarily stifle the vids...
UA-cam is really a historian’s dream because you can learn about pretty much every culture and just look at the primary source videos yourself
...and knowing is half the battle!!
Until they delete the channel
I didn't learn to fix anything at home growing up. After UA-cam came out, I've since taught myself a ton of useful skills like working on my own vehicles, carpentry, etc. It's like electronic Dad. What a great time to be alive.
watching those GI Joe PSA Parodies was what made me sign up and make my youtube account
The super long crash sequence and then "GAME OVER, YEAH!" gets me every time xD
This is still my favorite after all these years. Just last night I told my buddy on PS4 " Who wants a body massage" and get the phrase " Give em the stick, no don't give em the stick..oooooooooh" right back. We need more man it's been too long, but still just as fresh.
Like those beats
You get in the fridge!
You, you’re the ringleader.
Aw HELL no! What's up, dawg?
5 fings iv put on me bum
Are we going to nuke it?
I wanna get in the fridge too!
"Hey kid, I'm a computer!"
Help computer. Stop all the downloadin!
“Knowing is half the battle” is the reason I research everything I come across
My daughter showed me these.
Between some funny jokes, the rest of it is so hilarious because of the odd, surreal dialogue and noises the characters make and just the way some lines are said.
Seeing the Joes and the kids spouting off some strange dialogue and behavior elevates these to classic, weird comedy.
So many of these are permanently embedded into my humour loop. It's mind of insane.
I was so impressed with my 25 year old coworker. I happened to say "And knowing is half the battle!" and he responded with "Go Joe!". I'm so proud of that little guy!
That's what the 80's did to us.
My local bartender is in her 30's. But she loves 80's music because of older siblings, so she always plays 80's on her shift. It's nice to grab a beer and listen to stuff I can relate too. Sometimes those younger ones surprise us.
"I just wanna ride my mOOOOOOOOOOOOtercy...
...cle."
"I don't wanna pickle"
pops outta my mouth
...now & again...
Thumbs way up for "I LEARNED IT FROM WATCHING YOU!!!" -- made me snicker as a kid; makes me cringe and duck my head as an adult...
Parents who use drugs, have children who use drugs.
@@stinkyfungus think that was implied..
Got a friend that had a "help computer" t-shirt from back in the day. He lost it, nugget.
Once in a blue moon you stumble on to a channel and wonder how you've never seen it before.....I now have my next list of vids to binge for a long time to come
One of the most authentic connections I ever shared with a stranger was when I said "mister body machine GO!" in public to a friend, and someone else turned around in shock before giving a solemn nod.
I saw the Beasty Boys in Melbourne Australia early 2005. Half way through the show Adam held up his hand and said “Help computer.” I got it but I don’t think anyone else did.
What's crazy to me is that so many OTHER people saw these! I'm in the UK and when they were on Ebaumsworld, there were about 5 of us who'd seen them; a few friends and my sister. I loved the lack of any context. They looked like cartoons I'd seen as a kid but we didn't get GI Joe over here (at least on terrestrial TV), so it was just divorced from reality by but a thread. Amazing stuff!
This should be required viewing before you are allowed to view anything else on UA-cam
*falls off cliff*
"Shiiiiiiii-!"
I LOVE this one! Lol. So quick and simple but hilarious!
Personal fave.
Man Imboutaputaputawusswussaman
That one still makes me laugh as hard as it did the first time I saw it, and I can watch it for ages at a time.
GI Joe!
The GI Joe PSA parodies were the first meme videos I saw on UA-cam. I just couldn't stop laughing and some of the lines still live rent free in my brain to this day. Legendary!
And knowing is half the battle...
...The other half is violence.
Me and my roommates would speak full sentences IN these parodies for weeks at a time and somehow communicate perfectly well.
As someone who grew up in southeast Pennsylvania long ago that Philly 57 logo at 1:40 brings back memories.
Same here
These came out while I was in high school. Pork chop sandwiches was the first one I ever saw, but Dance might be my favorite.
Ice was the first one my friend showed me, and Dance is also my favorite
"Knowing is half the battle!!" The other half is 25% Red Lasers and 25% Blue Lasers.
I randomly will say "And knowing is half the battle!" to my daughter. She has no clue lol.
I've said that a work....none of the new kids get it.
I say it to my kids and they go we got it dad
"I want someone to take me to the hospital."
"You sure about that?"
Knowing that snitches get stitches is half the battle, indeed.
It's funny how these are almost as nostalgic as the cartoon itself, I have the same reaction to the first season of Robot Chicken lol
I showed these to my then girlfriend at the time and she -kind of- got it about halfway through. Body massages got a laugh. The last one i showed was Lady Jaye and the two kids. When the girl at the end goes “BAH!” she went into an uncontrollable fit of laughter.
I married that woman.
I was 23/24 years old, at my first IT job doing bench PC repair when me and my nerd buds saw and shared these videos on Ebaum's World. It feels good to look back on how much we've progressed, and to have been there from the beginning.
Look at all your different color hats!
Every single time I hear someone say "and knowing is half the battle", I don't skip a single beat and reply "and the other half is porkchop sandwiches", (even if it wasn't directed at me) knowing full well that not a single person I say that to will ever get the reference, but it makes for a fun, random reply.
"Give 'em the stick...DON'T GIVE 'EM THE STICK!!!"
Oh man, I used to answer my friends phone calls, "Ah hell no! What's up dog!". Buzz lightyear still cracks me up.
That was my favorite parody. 1st saw it in 2006. I couldn't stop laughing for 3 days straight XD
‘Holy s...! I’m totally going so fast! Huuuh!’
I love these PSA parodies. Thanks for doing this video, Dan!
The way you very Matter-of-Factly explain the first PSA edit is a genuine piece of comedy gold. I almost peed myself laughing.
Wow, blast from the past. I remember coming across several of the videos, and I went straight to the Fensler Film website and downloaded them all, while I was in college I believe. That would have been late 90s or maybe early 00s. I still have those files, but I haven’t watched them in quite a while. Good times.
Those videos helped me get through some bad times. Always grateful for them.
These were always some of my favorite videos. I only found out last year that dj douggpound had involvement in them. Pork chop sandwiches, body massage, give him the stick. Comedy gold.
1:26 That Ron Jeremy PSA on the dangers of autofellatio takes me right back to my childhood.
“Who wants a body massage?”
Eric is a friend so I was lucky to see these at Heaven before they became famous. They were an instant hit with all of us. Crazy to see them still talked about today.
Amazing that I got to experience this _before_ Hasbro stepped in with a cease and desist order.
“And knowing is half the battle...the other half is violence”. 🤗
And the other 99 percent is porn. G.I. JOEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!
Half of violence is red lasers. The other half is blue lasers
My Firefighter Daughter (who grew up watching all my cartoons: “They need to make PSA’s again, like don’t eat Tide Pods; you will die! Our generation are morons because they don’t have heroes telling them not to be stupid; so they reach new levels of stupidity without anyone telling them to stop!”
Me: 😂😂😂
☝️ This
there IS PSA's... it's called South Park.
She sounds like a boomer ngl.
Silverfoil sounds like she struck a nerve, ngl.
No one actually ate Tide pods.
Extremely happy I saw this. I’ve been a fan of those PSAs for years. Thanks for the breakdown. And I agree FULLY with one of the quotes you showed...when the kid falls and hits the ice is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. I watch it over and over and over. Nice work on this video!
I literally ended my conversation with my wife with "and knowing is half the battle" today
And now we've reached the point where there's action figures of these memes. God bless the internet.
1:43 Setting that Philly station watermark really took me back.
Also: I couldn't tell you how many times I used "Too bad your ass got saaaaaaaacked" watching football.
I have never, ever laughed as hard as I did the first time I saw Pork Chop Sandwiches. I still remember exactly where and when I saw it.
I DON'T WANT A PICKLE, I JUST WANNA RIDE MY MOTORSICKLE
Alexander Silady I DON’T WANNA DIE. I JUST WANNA RIDE MY MOTOR CY...
...CLE.
My God, these were everything in my dorm my freshman year of college in 2004.
These remind me of the PSAs - complete with Charles Barkley, for some reason - at the end of each episode of the animated “Clerks” episode.
Likely where Smith got the idea.
They’re only at the end of three episodes. Though Barkley appears in two more.
Knowing is half the battle. The other half is 25% red lasers, 25% blue lasers.
baabaaabaadaabaadaa! i loved this as a kid. and their little funny haaaats.
I remember being with friends watching it on ebaum’s world. My life was never the same.
I appear on this video at 9:00. I'm #67 in the Old Spice Commercial with Von Miller. It was filmed in May 2017 at College Of The Canyons in Santa Clarita, Ca. Yo Joe!
I like that one that went DOOOOOON'T GIVE HIM THE STICK!!!
Thanks to these parody PSA's, me and my friends know exactly what the hell we're talking about when we say "Do you know my dad?" "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHH!"
Also I can't hear the name Roadblock without thinking "Who wants a body massage?!"
"Give him the stick....DON'T GIVE HIM THE STICK!"
Dont pretend we didnt notice that little jab at the last jedi
Eric Fensler appeared in the Portlandia episode, “One Moore Episode.” He was the “local actor” at the table read at the end of the episode.
"I'm a new age digital bounty hunter who needs to get paaaid." PLEASE MAKE THIS INTO A SHOW.
I liked this video before the ad at the beginning even finished and the video even started- because this is clearly a historic public document
Tell me more of this..."sunset feelings."
I thought I was the only one who got intrigued by that as well...
The PSA parodies are still some of the funniest things ever to exist! F%^& Hasbro for the C&D. Parody is fair use. Anyway, there needs to be HD re-releases!!!!!!
Porkchop sandwiches is my favorite of all of them. I am definitely sharing this video!
Fun fact: I had a porkchop sandwich last night
Street Deacon they’re so good dude
With lettuce tomato cheese bacon mayo and a splash o hot sauce
Dang, that makes me miss the Midwest. You can't get one in Virginia.
:(
Oh man I am now old, I remember back in High School when Ebaumsworld had 1 page in their video section.
