The first time I ever went to Toys R US, I actually got He-Man from this line! I "wasn't feeling good," so my Dad let me stay home from school. On TV there was a commercial for Toys R Us, I remember running to my Dad excited to tell him about this store I just heard of and then he told me that store isn't that far from is, so he drove me to Douglaston Plaza! 13:54 That He-Man power sword reminded me of my Lion-O "Sword of Omens" that came with a shield & battle claw or belt. We had some great toys in the 80's. . .🤩🤗😎💯
This was my He-Man! After being a fan of pulp sci-fi, this line was so much more visually interesting than anything from Filmation. As far as the voice cast goes, Campbell Lane made NA Skeletor his own. Optimus Primal, in retrospect, doesn't quite land the same way as the voice of He-Man. The toys (including the Skull Staff, which I owned as a kid) were the real draw here though. I even went as far as collecting the Space Mutants from the Classics line. Which will forever be incomplete. But those that were part of the line, looked fantastic.
I remember those swords were popular, but I only saw the figures warming pegs at K-Mart long after the series was cancelled. I didn't know there was a cartoon until this video.
I loved New Adventures of He-Man as a child and I still do. I liked it's premise of He-Man and Skeletor leaving Eternia and time traveling to the future to the technologically advanced peaceful planet Primus. I believe Battle Beyond The Stars was an influence behind the cartoon.
Another Great Video, Greg! A few years ago at a Comic Convention, I met the artist who drew the concept art for He-Ro, Son of He-Man. He signed and sold me a full color poster of He-Ro and King Adam. He gave me the backstory of how Filmation was close to putting the series into production before the plug was pulled. Nice Guy.
I'll always have a soft spot for this show, being as it was shown every morning during the school summer holidays in the UK. This, C.O.P.S and James Bond Jr. Didn't enjoy the wacky humour but the animation was nice. Good call on the Ulysses 31 connection, one of my all time favourites. Side note: I think I might have an illustration or a comic in that issue of Cereal:Geek!
I gotta say, this episode is brilliant in the fact that it references so many of your previous videos. Its like a rabbit hole of 80s/90s nostalgia that seemingly never ends and just on this one channel. 🤣
I liked this show, even though I grew up on OG He-Man. I still remember Skeletor's line of "That, my dear, is trouble." Not sure why. But that one line sticks with me strongly almost 40 years later.
The 2001 series was the worst way how to do he-Man. Prince Adam is a spoiled brat that doesn't learn anything from his mistakes, and all the other masters are a band of man-children who lack basic social skills. The worst
The thing with the excellent 2001 series was that the original didn't have to deal with multiple dedicated cartoon channels like 2001 did. It was just a different time, the original aired typically on broadcast TV just as cable tv was coming into existence where only a few people had it... by 2001 everybody had cable with 200 channels and at least 3+ dedicated cartoon channels so I think it was just got lost in too many choices, It didn't help that Cartoon Network was awful at scheduling it with inconsistent timeslots and long stints between seasons.
@@Dats_Mark I'd say the unpredictable scheduling of Cartoon Network did a lot to hamstring multiple shows (and their Toy lines) from the early 2000s...
I had the Skeletor with the cape, Brakk, and Optikk. They were pretty cool action figures for the time. Lots of articulation, felt pretty sturdy, the action gimmicks didn’t seem too obtrusive in the toys I had. I don’t remember watching the show. I did watch the original He-Man in syndication, but I didn’t have the toys. I think they were no longer selling them at that point, which might explain why I had toys from the new series instead. I was born in ‘85.
Now this is the He-man I remember when I was little! 80's kid here and despite my brother insist that I did watched the original He-man cartoon, I only just remember the "New" Adventure of He-Man cartoon instead!
Yikes, I luckily have somehow avoided this version like the plague but that version of skeletor really ruins any chance it had. So freaking goofy, ridiculous.
Another epic episode! Just when you think you know everything about the MOTU franchise, you learn that you did not have the power. I absolutely did have the "new" He-Man figure with the Lorenzo Lamas ponytail, though.
Fun fact: In some European countries the New Adventures of He-Man toyline was actually called "Super He-man". I guess the toy company thought that since the regular He-Man was already super strong, if you rename this new version into "Super He-man", kids would love it, since that would like make him like "double super" or something. This marketing ploy did not work and this new toyline was mostly unsuccessful We didn't get the cartoon or even the regular comic book, but instead just had this weird mini-comic that didn't have drawn images but was made by using photographs of the toys used to tell slightly altered version of the back story.
If I remember correctly, on the original mini comics, human Eternians were earthlings that traveled there. And in the live action movie, there was a cut scene where He-Man is shown an old NASA space craft.

I loved this cartoon as a kid, I was a bit too young for the original but by the time this came out I was 6+. Never saw any of the toys in shops in the UK mind.
I remember seeing the toys in stores as a kid but never saw the cartoon, it never aired where I lived. I always wondered about it because I loved He-Man when I was little (Born in 1980 so the perfect age for it).
I don't think this show ever aired where I live, either. Syndication is such a crapshoot. Where I lived, a lot of cartoons would air at 6 am, so I'd have to wake up early in order to watch them.
"In 1987, the Masters of the Universe line collapsed, and the movie sealed its fate..." Me, as a three-year-old in 1987, playing with He-Man toys, and watching the MOTU movie: "WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
8:29, cool PRIMUS reference! I appreciate these figures now, but at the time we just weren't interested because they looked nothing like the original figures. If they'd just kept the same basic action-pose as MOTU, we probably would've bought them. Nowadays, I collect the figures because of the DEMOLITION MAN connection. 😉
Even though I was a kid when New adventures were around I always loved the original MOTU. It just has something about it. Despite the ridiculousness of the cartoon or bodybuilder like toys itself 😄
Yes, I remember this show and the toy line growing up. I only saw a few episodes because where I grew up, it didn't have a permanent time slot, so it kept moving around.
The electronic power sword from NA was my favorite toy to play with back then. It lit up, had all kinds of battle sounds, and even had a power up mode. It was the first ever role play sword I know of that had sounds that would activate when hitting something with it. The NA show itself was a bit confusing when trying to tie it into the original MOTU, but I enjoyed it when I could find it on TV to watch. I remember the original NA He-Man figure's sword handle snapping off, requiring me to get a new one, which broke as well. Apparently it was a really common issue, which is why they changed it when making newer He-Man figures for the line. Why they had the sword look different is anyone's guess though.
I'll never forget seeing the New Adventures figures for the first time. My mom had taken me to Hills to purchase a radio-controlled car, which was expensive. I also noticed the figures, which I had no idea were coming out. Somehow I got my mom to buy me the car AND a He-Man/villain two-pack!
Wasn't expecting to hear my native language in this video tbh ^^ and I remember that German ad for the new He-Man show from my childhood. That was a long time ago, like 1990 or '91. Was definitely before the end of 1992 because that's when the channel _RTLplus_ changed its name to just _RTL._ Now you'll have to excuse me, I gotta go listen to 'My Name Is Mud' 🎸(just imagine it's a bass guitar)
Watching this video made me realize I had so many toys from this growing up that I seemingly inherited from my sister(?) and just never realized what they came from.
I remember watching half of this as a kid. I say half, because in my local area, it was in a terrible time slot, meaning I got to watch the first half of an episode before my mom dragged me away to school. I also remember describing it to friends later, before the internet catologged everything in great detail, and I was met with so much skepticism I started to think maybe it was a fever dream. "Why would He-Man wear pants?" they would rightly point out.
He-Ro Count: 4 Also, I love how this synopsis does NOT discuss the actual ongoing plot of the series past the overall concept. Like, 'WHO cares, we're SELLING TOYS!!"
The new backdrop is a void as The New Adventures of He-Man. This episode of Toy Galaxy, though? Tops! Thank you for this. Also, that commercial at 9:15 made me cry a bit with nostalgia.
I own that 30th anniversary set! Great little investment that came with a soundtrack and a golden powersword! The New Adventures episodes are ' the best of' but are mainly Skeletor episodes including the very last episode of the series.
I remember having the toy of the eye guy as a small child and he man and skeletor and the movements they had by moving their chest or torso. Thanks for doing an episode on this
A friend of mine had Nordor when we were kids, and I couldnt wrap my head around it. It was so cool. But I had never seen the cartoon it came from so wasnt aware of the show at the time. But I do really like the toys they were produced, and still on the hunt for a decent version of Nordor for myself.
I don't remember a lot about the later he-man reboot tbh (although I do remember having the new he-man figure with that weird swinging motion) but interesting to hear the different 'He-Ro' reboots how all of that would've worked! (as for the late 80s MOTU I still really liked the all-gold skeletor from the finale, if nothing else!)
He-Ro yes I remember reading about him in the version I read he is the son of He-Man and Teela . This was a link to a concept pitch which someone made into a mini-comic . Okay can't find it any more but it seem he is the laser He-RO hmmm but int he comic this all happend on Eternia. yeah I think it was a mix up between the pitch and some fanflare.
There was a revival of He-Man on Netflix recently (the OTHER one than Revelations, I mean) that delves into more sci-fi elements. That show especially makes this New Adventures series funny in hindsight.
While I'm not a fan of the New Adventures cartoon,I do actually like the toyline and think it's a shame it got steamrolled by TMNT at the time. Ironic. One line I like got steamrolled by a line I love.....
"Takes place sometime after He-Man discovered pants, but before he discovered shirts." amazing line.

Great retrospective
I'm a huge fan of the franchise. I especially loved the Primus bass riff you snuck in Dan. Well played sir, well played indeed!
"In 1987, the Masters of the Universe line collapsed, and the movie sealed its fate..."
Me, as a three-year-old in 1987, playing with He-Man toys, and watching the MOTU movie: "WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
The Primus references started at 2:27, there's quite a few little edits of intro bass of My Name Is Mud splattered throughout.
Primus sucks! 😉
Skeletor reminded me of The Joker in this adaptation.
I still think that Laser Light Skeletor has a great design
"But there was a reason Star Wars departured [sic] from the toy shelves" LOL love it guys keep it up!!
Even though I was a kid when New adventures were around I always loved the original MOTU. It just has something about it. Despite the ridiculousness of the cartoon or bodybuilder like toys itself 😄
That's part of the charm.
Yes, I remember this show and the toy line growing up. I only saw a few episodes because where I grew up, it didn't have a permanent time slot, so it kept moving around.
Friday early early morning, taking care of business, just in time for Toy Galaxy. Sweeeeet...
Hell yeah I had that sword too loved playing with it back when I was a kid 💯
I still have my Power Sword. It's proudly displayed in my room, and I consider it one of my most prized possessions. Still works, and everything.
@@pensacolian211 I wish I still had mine. No idea where it went, but it was still working last time I saw it.
Supposedly, that roleplay power sword accounted for the lion's share of the toyline's sales.
Nice work getting both. I loved Hills department store. Such great toy displays there.
Wasn't expecting to hear my native language in this video tbh ^^ and I remember that German ad for the new He-Man show from my childhood. That was a long time ago, like 1990 or '91. Was definitely before the end of 1992 because that's when the channel _RTLplus_ changed its name to just _RTL._
Now you'll have to excuse me, I gotta go listen to 'My Name Is Mud' 🎸(just imagine it's a bass guitar)
Love that touch @0:14 with the Back to the Future sound!
Watching this video made me realize I had so many toys from this growing up that I seemingly inherited from my sister(?) and just never realized what they came from.
13:49 I remember this ad 😂
I have always loved new adventures
I had no idea this existed….what were they THINKING 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Wtf !!!! why do I not know about this? Thanks for the 411 toy man.
I was waiting for it and then pleased to hear Pixel Dan and Scott Neitlich mentioned in a video about the history of He-Man obscura.
Love how a "New" skeletor skull is in the back at 5:43!
He-Ro Count: 4
Also, I love how this synopsis does NOT discuss the actual ongoing plot of the series past the overall concept.
Thanks for doing an episode on this
Speaking of "New Adventures" I like the look of the new studio layout.
Pants, Dan? Where we're going, we don't need pants. LOL
That show especially makes this New Adventures series funny in hindsight.
thanks! I'm trying to catch up on various MOTU projects so it's cool to see this before I give new adventures a try
It tries new things. It tries different things. Then there is Sagitar. One of the most unique designs in MOTU.
The planet Primus. So He-Man is saying the Seas of Cheese with Wynonna' Big Brown Beaver while drinking Pork Soda because his name is Mud?
Love the new background.
I like the series and the toy line but my problem was the look of Skeletor those eyes he looks like a Simpson character
While I'm not a fan of the New Adventures cartoon,I do actually like the toyline and think it's a shame it got steamrolled by TMNT at the time. Ironic. One line I like got steamrolled by a line I love.....
The toyline was kinda cool but they were smaller than the MOTU figs which was a little off putting
@@EckerKyle To Small for the OG He-Man toys, Still too Big for others of the era
This was the episode I was anticipating. You guys gave so much good information. Thank you.
