BYU fan here. Thank you for covering these two schools in the eras that you did cover, they both have taken turns having success. Super excited to see these two in the Big XII together. Lots of great recent history for both BYU and Utah.
As a Utah fan and alum, seeing the Holy War get more and more recognition is awesome. I'm not sure there's a more heated rivalry in CFB with two schools located so close to each other. It's basically a statewide holiday whenever Utah and BYU play. Everyone watches regardless of who they root for or whether they even care or not. I'm glad Utah and BYU are conference rivals again, and yes that 2012 game would be a great subject for a video. I was there as a kid and that was one of the worst officiating debacles I've ever seen
Learning of this rivalry makes me think of NC vs Duke basketball. Just a stone throw away and super heated head-to-heads
@@themagicslinky1773 I'm sure UNC-Duke is another level but the Holy War is special. Now that both schools are power conference schools for the first time, it should only get even better
the problem is that, opposed to it being an Us versus Them it's really Us versus Us....we go to Church together, live together, we work together, it splits families....it really is the worst of both worlds.
Utah fan and alum here too (2000). Go Utes!
Man even as a BYU fan I have to agree with you; that 2012 game was absolutely nuts not even counting how it ended, but the finish just blew everything out of the water. Super excited to be in the same conference again and SO GLAD the Big 12 is respecting this rivalry and allowing it to be a yearly thing (cough Big Ten cough).
I’m from England and have been following college football as best I can for about a decade. I’m going to send this video to my brother who hasn’t been able to get into it because it’s probably the best explanation of the weird championship history of the sport. Keep up the good work man
Definitely the weirdest championship in sports! Voted for and committees Lol.
Until 1998 they were all phony opinion poll championships, that's why they were called "mythical national championships" but everyone has to play along because if you scrap the phony championships, schools like BYU would 💩 themselves since their phony championship is their claim to fame, even though they played a schedule full of bad teams that had a combined record of 63-85. There have been numerous undefeated teams with way tougher schedules that didn't get to claim a championship.

I think a major reason that both the schools in the video didn’t struggle to play up was because they both have a rich history of having good players in the trenches on both sides of the ball. The O-line on offense and front 7 on defense. It explains why an Alabama or Michigan couldn’t just walk in and dominate, because the trenches weren’t one-sided.
Shout out to the utah polynesians! 😂
Well that and 2008 Alabama was INSANELY OVERRATED...... They beat teams that went a combined 70-79 on the season..... They got gifted a ranking jump by beating supposedly #9 Clemson to start the year, which catapulted #24 Alabama to #13. Fun Fact 2000-2007 Clemson never once won more than 9 games and never once finished in the Top 15 - so you tell me how in the world this team was #9 to start the year?
2008 Alabama is in fact the only team ranked in the Top 10 to have ZERO top 10 wins, and somehow they got ranked #3 in the nation. Bama's sole quality wins from 08 are 11 point road win at #13 Georgia and a 4 point home win over #14 Ole Miss. Georgia went 10-3 and didnt beat a single team till their bowl game (beat #24 Michigan State), Ole Miss went 9-4 losing to a (7-6) vandy, and (7-6) South Carolina, but they did beat Florida by 1 - this team was barely even ranked before bowls......
@@MattBuild4they lost one game by 10 to the eventual national champions (considered one of the best cfb teams EVER). Utah beat them worse 🤣. Make all the excuses you want they were definitely robbed of at least one if not two national championships.
@@MattBuild4 All your number are impressive, but have no real meaning or truth. Numbers & stats can be used to "prove" BYU was the BEST team in '83. But we all know that they were not... though I argued at the time that they should win the NC by the existing criteria. Alabama didn't believe that they had a quality opponent until down 21. Cudos to the Utes for doing that. Alabama did not respect the game or the opponent. Play the game 9 more time and Bama ends up winning the series 8-2, though 7-3 or 9-1 would not surprise me. Your claim that Alabama was "insanely overrated" only means that Utah didn't beat a good team. Is that really what you want to say? 😊
@@davidallred2947 Yes I have no problem in saying that for Utah, because it doesnt really change anything for them - they still had 3 more Top 25 wins besides this Alabama game including other top 10 wins (which Alabama never had).
What it really changes is it makes the selection of teams in 08 title even more sus, as Alabama was Florida's SOLE quality opponent, and Oklahoma lost to Texas and shouldnt have represented the B12 in that game.

Good video. Never could stand that big-money bcs-bullschidt. If it was still up to the old big10, we'd all still be watching one big game a year. Like him or not, that's one thing Barry Switzer fought the good fight and won for College Football. Still have a long way to go. Utah is not going to make it easy for what's left of the Big12, but they will make it much better. Best wishes to the SEC and the new Big10, but things are looking pretty good in the Big12.
As a BYU fan I would agree, but those games take years off my life every single time.

TCU rivalry with byu and utah is extremely underrated
TCU's 1st year in the MW there were controversial victories in both their games at BYU (fumble at the goal line) and Utah that created an instant rivalries. For a number of year each one of those 3 teams had the potential to be BCS busters. Then Utah left for the big leagues (ruining a good thing), followed by TCU, and finally BYU. Now all 3 are in the same conference. This could be fun! It could be.

So Utah with a gimmick spread offense was going to beat one of the greatest college football teams of all-time? Leinart, Bush, Dwayne Jarrett, Steve Smith, Shaun Cody, Sedrick Ellis, Mike Patterson, Lofa Tatupu against Alex Smith and gimmicks. Utah would have lost by 30+. Urban Meyer predicted that Colorado would win the Pac-12 and make the CFP last season. That's the guy who coached your team. The guy who had to leave Florida because of "migraines" and then proved that he couldn't coach at the highest level in Jacksonville.
@@RobbieStacks90 , Utah would have lost by 30+?? That's not realistic. Both Utah's 2004 and 2008 teams were one of the best teams in the nation for sacks, tackles for loss, and forcing turnovers. Also, both of Utah's offenses in 2004 and 2008 were insanely good. Despite the S.O.S. argument, Utah's 2008-2009 school year team still beat 4 teams who finished the season ranked in the top 25, in addition to Utah going undefeated. Also, Utah and Florida (if they would've played each other that year), it would've been a much closer game that year, because Kyle Whittingham and Urban Myer know each other's strategies from when they used to be on the same coaching staff together at Utah in 2003 and 2004....so they would be evenly matched. After Utah's win over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, the media interviewed with Urban Myer, (when Urban Myer was the head coach at Florida, at the time), and the media asked him what he would think about the scenario of Utah playing Florida, (if they would've played each other that year), and Urban Myer had a worried look on his face and said- "I don't want to have anything to do with them!"....him implying that Utah is a team that Urban Myer is afraid to go up against, and I think Urban Myer knows that his Florida team would've lost to Utah in that scenario. Utah was the hottest team in CFB that season, and Utah not only beat an Alabama team that was ranked #1 for five straight weeks, (until the SEC championship game, but Utah also beat the same Alabama team, (who just a season later, the majority of Alabama's roster returned for the 2009-2010 season and won the national championship over Texas.....proving that Utah beat a national championship caliber team, in which regardless of what the biased CFB committee said and giving all the recognition to Florida in 08'-09', Utah was arguably just as deserving for a national title, because of being the only undefeated team in the nation at season's end, in addition to Utah beating 4 teams who finished ranked in the top 25. Nobody gave Utah a chance of winning against Alabama, but Utah proved everybody wrong.....the same could've applied for Florida, in which Florida probably would've underestimated Utah, as well, because the Florida players would have likely been cocky just like Alabama was, because they don't take a team like Utah seriously, (despite what Urban Myer would say to the Florida football team prior to a game that big, in that scenario). Also, Utah won against Alabama by 14 points, While Florida beat Alabama by 11 points.....so I believe that Utah would've beaten Florida in a national championship scenario by a field goal, and knowing how good Utah's kicker was at the time, (Louie Sakoda), (who won the Lou Groza award in 2008), would've nailed the game-winning field goal to beat Florida. Also, the fact that Florida lost their own home game to a 9-win Ole Miss team proves that Florida had signs of some weaknesses on their team, and that Florida is not unstoppable. Also, if you look on film, Utah's win over Alabama was more impressive than Florida's win over Alabama. Utah lead and controlled the whole game against Alabama, While the Florida vs. Alabama game was kind of back-and-forth, with both teams taking leads against each other throughout the game, until Florida pulled away with the lead in the 4th qtr. Also, Florida's win over Oklahoma in the NCG was not impressive, as Florida only won by 10 points, in a final score of 24-14. Sorry to burst your bubble, but Florida was way over-hyped. And Utah's defense had so many seniors on that team, and Paul Kruger, Sean Smith, and Stevenson Sylvester would've shut down Tim Tebow and his offense. So if you think Florida and other teams would blow out Utah, you're not realistic. Just watch both of Utah's 2004 and 2008 teams on film, and ALL games they played in, in those two seasons. It's not always about who has the stronger S.O.S. argument; sometimes it's about has the better overall talent and skill as a football team, which Utah definitely had. Another thing I'd like to point out, is that Utah's 2008 QB Brian Johnson was unstoppable. No team in the nation was able to stop Brian Johnson's spread offense, and side passes....he timed the side passes perfectly, and controlled the clock very well with that spread offense, too. Utah was a much better of a team than what people around the nation thought....
Lavell will always be a fucking legend.

Basically the big schools fought to keep the small schools out after BYU got an undeserving title after not beating anybody, but ended up proving even more that smaller schools belong by giving them a stage in the BCS to produce upsets, and because of that failure we now have the CFP
Highlight at the end for BYU should have been John Beck to Jonny Harline 2006.
This is why I always love lower level college football tournaments. It actually gives every conference champion a chance at a national championship.
Yes... As a foreigner the bowl logic for the sake of it has no sense.
Too much tradition can kill something.
it's why i started watching FCS football a couple of years ago. every conference has a fair shot
As a diehard Utah fan and someone who has lived in Utah for his whole life for all but two years (yes I served an LDS mission lol) I loved this game. I remember going to school and teachers would have Utah or BYU logos in their windows and would wear shirts all week long. I remember fighting with my friends on who was gonna win the game. I remember when Utah beat BYU 17-16 on a blocked field goal. Man I have so many good childhood memories of the Holy War and to me is easily one of the best rivalries in college football.
Although the BYU-Michigan game had a final score of 24-17, BYU handed Michigan 6 turnovers in that game, and only forced a single last-second interception. BYU outgained Michigan by 280 yards. Show me any team that had lost the turnover battle by 5 and still won. Take out all the turnovers, the score could've very realistically been about 49-17. There's also the fact that Bosco was out almost the entire second quarter, and BYU couldn't move the ball with Gabbert. So, effectively, Bosco led the offense to 483 total yards in basically 3 quarters.
Washington was the better team.
@@barryallen3225 Washington was literally offered a spot in the Holiday Bowl and turned it down to play Oklahoma for a bigger bowl payout. Washington chose money over a championship, and now all their fans are butthurt about it. Tough cheese. Only one team finished 13-0 and number 1.

@@Swooperz11 Utah actually lost it by 3, 6 turnovers vs 3. At no point was Utah 0-6 in the turnover margin in that game. BYU was 0-6 up until the final 2 minutes in that bowl game. As a Mormon outside of Utah (go Noles), BYU can spark some strong reactions. We’re often encouraged to attend BYU. In my experience, BYU is often regarded as this holy sacred place unmired by “the world” and all the “wickedness” that religious people often associate with public university life. My idea about BYU soured when I finally attended Florida State and saw first hand the high quality of education I received and, despite having lived right next to a club, never participating in the party culture. In short, it is so gd frustrating to hear from BYU Mormons (and yes, I’m sticking with the name “Mormon”) about how amazing BYU is when the tuition is cheaper in Florida and (I feel) my education is of far higher quality at FSU. I, and many other Mormons I know, like to root against BYU in football any chance we get.
All of this is a long way around to say that seeing LaVell Edwards sporting old BYU gear is cool as hell and makes me want to reconsider my disdain for the school lol and Kalani Sitake does seem like a genuinely good dude. I just root against the brand lol
BYU tuition is usually cheaper for most people because it's significantly subsidized by the church using tithing & investment money. 🤷
If you're in-state it's basically HALF the price of going to Utah or Utah State, and if you're out of state it's significantly cheaper than basically any other out of state university (although staying in-state at a public school for Mormons outside of Utah is often still cheaper).
Tons of Utah ex/inactive Mormons go to BYU and pretend to still believe for 4 years just to get a half priced degree from a quality school. 🤷
@@Cooe.1 no doubt. But I suppose I got lucky because Florida higher ed is practically free for in-state people but still really cheap. Plus, at least for what I’m doing, I simply believe that my education is of higher quality attending Florida State than if I would have attended BYU. I have much more intellectual freedom here than I feel I would have at BYU.
Believing a random spot in Utah is the holy land and then forming an entire cult around it that you use to gaslight everyone into allowing you to have and abuse multiple wives at once is crazy work.

I grew up in Salt Lake City beginning in October 1982 until September 1995.
The first game I ever attended Pro or College Football was the 1982 Utah vs BYU game at Rice Stadium (now Olympic Stadium).
I remember it for 2 reasons…
First, BYU won the game at Salt Lake. I was only 10 years old and new to Football; I did not yet have a favorite team or player.
Second, the only time I ever got to see Steve Young play in person pro or college.
Fun Note: In 1992-1993, I used to work for a lady in a Salt Lake office setting who told me her daughter used to date Steve Young while they were both in college.
Anyway, the other game I attended was the 1994 game at Rice Stadium. First time both Utah and BYU were ranked while confronting each other.
My best friend was an Utah student and living on campus. We both went to the game. It was very intense. We just had a snow storm that week and all the snow had to turned to ice. The school never bothered cleaning the snow in the seats prior to the game so we were sitting on ice blocks.
During the game the student sections where we were at were pelting Ice Balls and chunks at the BYU players. The referees had to stop the game several times because of this. It was funny at times but damn dangerous, someone can get seriously hurt.
In the end, the Utes beat the Cougars and were happy at the outcome.
For me and my best friend, those were the good old days.
The Holy War is now nationally known thanks to the success of both schools.
Nice to see they both are back in the same conference with the Big XII… this is a rivalry that must continue as the last game in November of each year for both.

The backyard brawl is on the East Coast with West Virginia mountaineers and the Pitt Panthers. This has always been recognized as one of the great rivalries in college football.
Excellent video it's awesome to see the recognition these 2 schools are getting. I grew up going to Cougar games, I was 4 years old when BYU won the National Championship and I remember BYU always having to play either home and home or 2 away and 1 home at BYU. BYU played everyone, Pitt,Texas, Ohio St, Penn St, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, UCLA, FSU, USC, Miami etc. I was there in 1990 when the defending national champions The Miami Hurricanes came to provo and Ty Detmer lit them up here's the stat line 38 -54 406 yds 3 TD 1 Int and BYU won 28-21. Utah has done a hell of a job with Whittingham
I was a freshman at BYU in 84 and in the marching band. It was an exciting year. I was at the Holiday Bowl and it was super exciting.
no one is picking up that the chiefs head coach Andy reid(head coach of chiefs) is in this video lol. he played for byu
Utah State: How bout me?
BYU: RAISE YOUR HAND WHEN YOU WANNA SPEAK!
UTAH: YEAH. JUST SIT THERE AND SHUT UP.
Fun fact: Neither team has won more than 9 in a row in the series. Even in the eras of dominance, the longest streak ends at 9. "You're welcome, BYU." - Charlie Brewer (started ahead of Cam Rising in 2021)
does the qb play on the line ? no byu dominated the line that game
Utah got killed in the flats and the trenches that game.
@@brundeasie_OG Agreed. Utah's O-line especially always looks sloppy for the first 3 games or so and it wasn't a particularly strong year for the D-line. But Cam was good at scrambling out of the often nonexistent pocket and either dumping it off or running for it. Looking forward to another entry in the rivalry!
@@brundeasie_OGCan’t wait to kick BYUs ass up in SLC this year! 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Lifelong BYU fan here, great video! Super well made. Learned a lot. Thanks!
Utah State needs to play a yearly rivalry game against Utah and BYU again
They actually have Utah this season
We're too good for them now, although it would be nice to play them
@@joshuaridley1676 yeah Ik I hope it’s somewhat competitive so that we can see them play more often
@@user-my6se2kv4u it’d be good for usu to play in these games even if they get blown out 🤷♂️
Seriously! Utah always plays one of the local fcs schools early in the schedule. Why not swap them for Utah State as your G5 game instead? And then Utah State (and the rest of the MW) helped BYU out with getting games on the schedule for BYU's entire independence era, it's a shame BYU just dumped them on the side of the road. Did em real dirty that way
Huge fan of BYU and a fan of the Utes except for one game a year - awesome rivalry. Personally I hate the religious aspect of the rivalry, but overall it's one of the most intense rivalries in sports. It's not quite Michigan Ohio State level but it's absolutely intense. It will take BYU a while to get back to former glory in the BigXII, but during the WAC and MWC days the rivalry game was almost always the defacto conference championship game.
Utah fan my whole life. I am so happy to see BYU and Utah get some respect and now again in the same conference. I won't be cheering for BYU to win any games unless it somehow helps the Utes but I respect the program and the way BYU v Utah games are usually very competitive. The better part is that there is no more hearing from BYU fans that the PAC12 is weak and Utah is not that good. We will find out for sure every year now. I'm really looking forward to the games. To make BYU fans happy. Lavell Edwards is one of the best college coaches ever. I gotta respect that and what he did for BYU. He deserves his accolades.
Agree with all and I'll add a line that I heard once in my homecountry in another sport: football must be decided on the field.
The worst thing for those rivalries is not having a game to decide
I’ve been saying this for years, glad someone made a video about it.
I think it’s important to recognize the mobility of programs into relevancy before byu. Miami exploded onto the scene without having a big conference. Same with Penn state.
So basically, this rivalry is a bunch of Mormons beefing with each other? 🤣
Pretty much!
Yeah but BYU has the better mormons, and we're the mormon school so
@@kaenachoo4783 I’ll take Utah over BYU any day. BYU is such a cult.
@@user-my6se2kv4uwhich means ziltch outside the Provo buble.

Here is an idea, put a cap on what schools can spend on their football programs. 66 million is ridiculous.
You know it’s a good day when KTO uploads another quality video.
Something I remember from the NCAA football games is the BCS system in the game would still rank you as a top 5 team or even give you a spot in the BCS national championship if you were a mid major and played ranked teams in the non conference. The actual computer in the game would let FIU play for a title, but you never saw that in the actual BCS era was utah
Uh no thats not what happened in the BCS.... just ask mid major teams in 98, 99, 00, 01, 02, 03, 05, and 11. None of these teams made the top 5 nor a BCS bowl - 2 of them went undefeated and none of them lost more than 1 game.
As a disgruntled guy In the morman sphere of interest, I laughed hard at the intro. Thank you.
7:47 “ you almost forgot this video was about these guys “
Almost hell! I had completely forgotten 😂
That beat at the end is somehow gets me so hyped. But a great vid overall. Utah and BYU basically lived the dream of a CFB 25 Dynasty save.
And now they are both in the Big 12 🙌
Missing one important piece: BYU went undefeated in 2001, at least up to the point where the BCS rankings were finalized, but was left on the outside looking in, despite having the nation’s most electric offense. After the snub BYU lost a late game at Hawaii as well as the bowl game. The injury of RB Luke Staley may have played into both the snub and the losses, but either way, BYU was excluded and this once again helped pave the way for greater inclusion of teams outside the advantages leagues.
fair enough, but 01 is already controversial for other reasons namely in Nebraska getting blown out by #4 Colorado, yet colorado magically not moving up in the rankings. It also really doesnt help that 01 BYU got blown out by 30+ to the 4th best team in the WAC (yes I get it June Jones Hawaii is always a threat, but jesus - they nearly hung 80 on you; I dont think not having your RB was difference maker.....)
@@MattBuild4 yeah, that Hawaii game was rough to watch. People have questioned BYU’s level of motivation with that game being on the heels of the snub, and maybe that’s true, maybe BYU just got exposed. I don’t really care either way. The point is just that at the time the postseason was set BYU had a really good case and was still dismissed. It prompted a lot of discussion as to what an outsider would actually have to do to crack the top six. Utah was treated similarly in 2004 and had a much stronger case, and I believe they squeaked into 6th. Not 100% on it. Anyway, it was just one of the steps along the way. Didn’t really change anything, which is probably why it was omitted.
@@MattBuild4 I didn’t say anything about Tulane and Marshall. This was a video about BYU and Utah’s impact on the postseason, and I pointed out a season that sparked conversation.
If you’re looking for someone to debate with, sorry, I’m not your guy.
dont forget to mention 09 aswell
@@smyleez 09 for who? BYU was a good team, but they got destroyed by TCU.
I can't wait till next season when West Virginia plays Utah it's going to be fun. By the way great show.
yk it’s a good day when kto posts
Great vid! As a Utah alum myself, I'm super excited to be in the same conference as BYU again. It's an awesome rivalry, one of the nations finest. Be fun to see which program busts the playoff cherry. Go Utes!
It would appear that the Utah Utes have a chip on their shoulder to win the national championship this year. They have suffered ever since BYU won their national championship in 1984. It will be curious to see what happens!
Love the UNF article reference ! Randomly glanced back at the screen and recognized several
names and the digital commons 😂🎉🎉
I’m a recently converted BYU fan and I love their history. One the best QB factory’s around.
Welcome to the 80s - you made it!
The quality and information in these videos is unmatched
As a childhood BYU fan, and now Utah alum, I’m happy to see these stories told. Thank you!
Excellent job of showcasing the information and telling the story. Very impressive.
Man. Whatever became of that Andrew Walter Reid guy? Anyone think he had success coaching?
I hear he's a coach of one of those Midwest teams 😅
Seeing the classic mtn west network brings back memories.
All hail Alex Smith
He was so good that year. I don't think ANY team could beat us. We were just this unstoppable murder machine.
Fantastic video. I'm a die hard Utes fan and by virtue of 98% of my family being Mormon, I had 2 grandparents with season tickets to BYU football. I saw a lot of games at Cougar Stadium in the 80s and 90s, even went to the 1990 Holiday Bowl. Even though I'll dislike BYU as long as I live, I'll always have a soft spot for that environment in Provo which fostered a lot of my love for college football. Can't wait to renew the rivalry in November. GO UTES!
UNIVERSITY OF NORTH FLORIDA MENTIONED 🦅🦅🦅 RAHHHH
Voter bias oddly hit Idaho hard in 2009. At one point, the Vandals stood at 6-1, with the only loss at the time against Washington 42-23. I know I'll get ripped on because Idaho was in the failing WAC. But the sad thing about voter bias is that Idaho didn't receive a single vote, and they should have. I'm not saying that they played like a top 25 team, but they should have received at least 1-10 top 25 votes.
Hell Yeah, the Holy War doesn't get enough love!
If you count the Pac-12 as its own thing, separate from the Pac-8, Pac-10 and now the Pac-2 zombie conference (OSU vs. WSU "Zombie Bowl" from now on?), then Utah will go down as the 4th most successful football program in the conference in terms of championships won. That puts them behind Oregon, Washington and Stanford, but ahead of USC. Not bad for a program that was considered a mid-major prior to 2011.
The growth of the Utah program is very notable.
Awesome to see a video about the teams from my Home state. And yes, Utah sports fans, (yes even a good chunk of the Mormons) want an NFL team.
We got MLS, NBA and now a NHL team. We are in contention to get an MLB team. But we would really love to have an NFL team.
NFL would be great
Not happening, San Antonio, San Diego, and St Louis will all get teams before Utah does
@@bigglilwayne7050 2 of the three failed at keeping them, also san Antonio will not get one due to the amount of cowboys fans
As a Denver fan, no I don’t want an NFL team. But I don’t think Utah will ever get one.
@@smyleez
San Diego got screwed out of their team, same for St Louis.... San Antonio would totally support an NFL team, plus it's a way bigger market than SLC...
Check out Sydney Vs South Sydney NRL rivalry. Played eachother every season (mostly 2 times excluding finals/grand finals) since 1908 when the NRL began. Rarely a player from one goes to the other (only 17 pro teams) and the head to head record is almost even. The games always end up in fights or someone getting sent off and Russel Crowe is at the head of it all.
Oh I should see more, this seems like a good one
Byu is also the last non power 5 team to have a heisman winner with Ty Detmer
I think another important reason is the fact that very little is actually decided by a single football game. It's almost like a single game of baseball or hockey. There is so much statistical noise in a single game that just playing one is worthless. Look at how rarely the NFL team with the best record actually wins the Superbowl.
Being from Utah. Thank you for recognizing this unique situation of football we have here! You covered it all, and just how we thought “wow this is something else no one is gonna experience.”
10:10 Andy Reid was only 13 years old in this picture.
Been watching bro since I was in 8th grade and now I’m a sophomore in college is wild to me
If you all want to know what this rivalry is like, here's a quote from Max Hall, BYU's most winningest QB:
“I don’t like Utah. In fact, I hate them. I hate everything about them. I hate their program. I hate their fans. I hate everything. So, it feels good to send those guys home. They didn’t deserve it. It was our time and it was our time to win. We deserved it. We played as hard as we could tonight, and it felt really good to send them home and to get them out of here, so it is a game I’ll always remember.
I think the whole university and their fans and organization is classless. They threw beer on my family and stuff last year, and did a whole bunch of nasty things. I don’t respect them, and they deserved to lose.”
Yeah Utah had one of the most classless fanbases in the PAC 12. Win or lose, they’re insufferable either way.
I wonder how Alex Smith fared against BYU?? Asking for a friend 😁😁😂😂
@@barryallen3225nice try. Washington fans are terrible almost as bad as BYU fans.
Then he became a drug addict. Real classy.
@@Number4lead and cleaned himself up. Utah, on the other hand. . .
I loved this video and it’s so cool how seeing how two teams in one of the biggest rivalries were both revolutionary. I feel like if you do a vid of Utah’s 2012 crazy victory you gotta also cover BYU’s victory in 2006. Either way the holy war is known for some of the most insane moments in cfb!
You should do a video on the demise of the Southwest Conference, it was the big money Texas universities way of not only killing their competition in the big Texas cities, but it allowed them to dominate recruiting in Houston and DFW....
Excellent suggestion!!
I’ll even add another super powerful and formerly prestigious conference that has since fell even further down in ashes, namely the PAC 10/12!!
Interestingly, back in the day the PAC used to recruit regional rivalry pairs, such as UofAZ & ASU, then in the 80s targeted UofU & BYU, but it fell through.
Then in the late 90s and early oughts, left wing politics intensified and the PAC schools became extremely belligerent towards anything religious or mildly centrist … they ended up inviting UofU along with the UofCO (Buffaloes) instead of BYU to form what became the PAC12. Of course, UofU and UofCO were NOT rivals and while the UofU had a strong program, the UofCO was flailing and couldn’t offer the PAC12 much of anything.
In the meantime, BYU goes independent and eventually joins the BIG10 (formerly the SWC), the once mighty PAC12 falls apart with UofU joining to once again share a conference with their instate rivals BYU… seems like poetic justice that the PAC’s hubris and discriminatory behavior eventually became their demise.
24:12 BYU, UCF, Utah, TCU, Cincinnati and Houston were all once mid major teams that are now in a power 5 conference which is insane
