I have no horse in this race, but I've seen officiating in all conferences lean towards certain schools for the sake of at least qualifying one team for the CFP. Look at Miami in the ACC, they escaped 3 almost certain losses with at least a little help from the officials. I think it's coming down from the top for the officials to error on the side the top teams.

Hey at least we have no actual losses against bad teams @Alabama @Miami @NotreDame @TexasAM. Okalahoma St and this I would qualify as mid/bad teams but SMU no way. End of the day a good team can lose to someone way worse on a single gameday. Miami barely beat Virginia Tech, California, and Louisville. I think at the end of the day people expect BYU to lose. Most teams don't get the same accountability held towards them. Miami who today was ranked #4 being a prime example, they had a worse strength of schedule, competed relatively the same with their opponents, yet they are held up to #4. Honestly I think Big10, SEC schools are overrated. There are good athletes all over the place. It really comes down to big plays, play calls, and who wants it more. I think the Vandy/Bama game really highlights this.

Very similar to defensive holding calls in the NFL like when the Rams win the SB or when the chiefs need a little extra. Those defensive holding calls always come up at the end of big, close games.
Joel Klatt nailed it. The issue isn’t this one particular call, it’s the fact that they hadn’t called this ALL GAME! In other words, they’d been letting them play, there was only one PI called all game and then at the most crucial time some ref decides to go by the letter of the law when you hadn’t done that all game. You established a style of play, then you changed it at the end. That the issue 😮
The stadiums are about 25-30 miles from each other. I lived there for about 15 years, graduated from BYU, and will be going back in a couple of months. So believe me, the drive from stadium to stadium is shorter than alot of people’s daily commute to work there. When these teams play each other in Provo(BYU’s stadium) the same can be said for the level of support for Utah.
Debatable but even if it was the refs missed tons of call then decided to nit pic the last play of the game and save byus butt, a little annoying but good game
With all due respect. Utah needs to make a head coaching change. You are in the massive Big 12 now, that pitty pat, ring a bell get a cookie type offense and defense is not going to do it. You need a power running game and massive type corners and linebackers to win in this league. The passion towards the refs at the end of the game should be put into your program and players. Just saying with all due respect, if not go back to the PAC 12 where that type of football will win you numerous conference championships.

Great way to end the night after not being able to catch the other good games today
Was it the ref's fault Utah scored 0 points in the second half? There was a "facemask" call on BYU earlier in the game that was complete garbage. But dealing with the ref's calls is part of the game.
exactly, any pootah fans that say otherwise are delusional. 9-0 baby
Yeah and a garbage PI call that extended a Utah drive too
Comparing a face mask penalty in the 1st half is not even comparable to calling a defensive hold on 4th and 10 with a minute and a half left in the game.
@@calvinhobbes6118but that face mask was a tackle for loss on a third down that extended the drive into a touchdown. So overall I’d say that call was more impactful to the game.
@@calvinhobbes6118 Tell your team to not hold on 4th and 10 with a minute and a half left in the game. I mean, he held or he didn't hold. If he held, it should be called. As far as I can see, and the angle wasn't great, it was a hold. And it wasn't even close. Still 2 bad calls against BYU.
A lot of complaining on the holding call yet I hear nothing about that face mask on that 3rd and 15 with BYU in the red zone. Yes BYU did not perform to their best level, but Utah shot themselves in the foot over and over again. Quit complaining, stop throwing fits, and look at yourselves and analyze why you have lost 5 games in a row now.
there is a big difference though in "missed calls" vs made up ones. Would love to see other angles but there is no holding there. And by the way, I'm neutral between these two being an Ag.
We can yell about penalties all night, but Utah didn’t score in the second half
Every single commentator and sports analyst said that was a clear hold. You obviously don’t know football.
That was Sweet!!! Watching games for 40+ years… Late night football kicks ass…
Absolute nailbiter.
I'm glad to see that some of the Utah players showed class and sportsmanship after it was over. Too bad the AD and coach couldn't do the same.
BYU pulls it out again!!! Remarkable, it would almost feel like a dream become reality if the Cougs met with the Buffs in the Big 12 Championship🔥
It's what the Big 12 wants
Even all the TV networks are dreaming of an undefeated BYU vs 1-loss Colorado Buffs TV ratings bonanza.
It's likely to happen. And I'll be there.
Another classic rivalry game -- in this case, the Holy War. You can throw out the records in those kind of games.
Why is it called the Holy war? The only church that lets you have 5 wives is the church of satan.
I live in both worlds--I have grad degrees from BYU and the U of U!
And...
The "Storming Mormons"!!!
I am no fan of either team, but seeing Utah fans crying over a correct call is amazing😂. Learn the game and accept it. Very simple.
Don't want hold call on 4th down? Maybe don't hold :)
That’s that KC Chiefs timely call to allow BYU to continue play smh
Clearly holding. No doubt about it. Anyone who says otherwise is blind or lying to themselves. Then Utah's defense had MANY opportunities to stuff BYU like they had been before but choked. The refs don't make you score 0 points in the second half. Utah should have won this game easily but crumpled BIG time
Really? Utah should have won this? Utah is 4-5 and BYU is 9-0 against teams Utah has lost to. On top of that, Utah has many injuries and had a 3rd string QB starting his first game. If BYU barely held up to this fractured Ute team, they have a rough time ahead. CFP is going to steam roll them.
@@phillipcook3430bro doesn’t know what a rivalry game is. Anything can happen during those games😊
i think we can be honest here. he contacted the receiver within five yards legally, then briefly held. letter of the law hold? probably so. should it have been called? i think 90% of football fans would agree it probably should not have been. BYU fans can enjoy their win and a great season and admit they caught a break.
- yes, I'm BYU fan but they will have a very difficult time when they play any team in the top 10 -- they will need alot of luck 😢 --
I think its a hold but obviously im biased, but if you take into account that BYUs defense didn't allow a point in yhe 2nd half and even after this hold, they still had to go get 50 yards just to kick it.... just saying there are more than just this call that influenced the final score
LOL. This was a call on 4th and 10 where the QB was sacked and Utah had the game won if not for that call.
You cant even compare the two.
@calvinhobbes6118 nice hypothetical, but the penalty WAS called so the game was not over

Best rivalry in the country without exception. In part because the teams always fight to a photo finish. When there is a lot on the line, like there was last night, it's beyond memorable. No doubt next year will be just as crazy.
It was a good run for Utah's football program. They are the new Nebraska for the next decade. You heard it here first.
This was an unlucky year for Utah due to their QB getting injured and all the unlucky bounces. Utah is a solid program with a solid coach and normally solid defense and solid run game. This year was just an aberration.

I remember a BYU v BSU game where field goals were the only points and missing field goals. BYU winning with field goal is awesome
There's SO MANY PEOPLE complaining game was stolen by referees at the end, however, NONE of them are acknowledging the illegal time run off on the clock at the end of the first half. There was 11.5 seconds left on the clock when a false start was called, then they didn't stop the clock til 9 seconds and called a false start time run off of 10 seconds, stripping BYU of a field goal attempt.

@@leogetz3570 No they were just Utah before that and broke formation, lol.
Then why did the really bad calls go against BYU? I'm an Aggie alum so no bias on my part.

Nah. Miami definitely was
Hey at least we have no actual losses against bad teams @Alabama @Miami @NotreDame @TexasAM.

I look forward to BYU vs. ASU now.
Joel Klatt nailed it. The issue isn’t this one particular call, it’s the fact that they hadn’t called this ALL GAME! In other words, they’d been letting them play, there was only one PI called all game and then at the most crucial time some ref decides to
go by the letter of the law when you hadn’t done that all game. You established a style of play, then you changed it at the end. That the issue 😮

Totally agree. Utah plays AND behaves like a Mountain West team. They play and behave like sore losers.
Utah is getting what they deserve.
