I worked in an independent VW & Porsche shop in beginning of the 70's and I have to say that you understand the 356, 912, early 911's when you say you want to just keep on driving. These cars were the last of the purely mechanical cars and others would go faster but with less satisfaction. I do wish you had taken a shift at redline just to hear the Porsche rasp that you got on the shift.

Hi Donald . Is Arch a fond and loving memory like my brother Norbert ? Gone but never forgotten 💖 When you said SWB I immediately thought 912. In the mid 1980's l restored / rebuilt a very badly repaired one , this was when Porsche were the world leaders in keeping a record of any parts used to keep that car on the road. Porsche would not issue parts to any car without the fullest details . .And then l promptly restored an absolute wreck of a 911 T sportomatic and had the priviledge of using Glasurit 54 line for the first time . The best ever base coat / clear system full stop ! I also had the opportunity of giving a '74 Carrera absolute beans on a short but hilarious test drive ! What a hoot ! Thanks Donald . As Bing would sing ...thanks for the memory!

@@Zagato67 My apologies Donald . I absolutely adored my big brother he was 6 years my senior . And back in the '60 's/ 70's we had so much fun . Norbert bought a new TR6 and l had , at 19 , a Triumph 2.5 pi saloon . We literally used to chase each other through the streets and roads of Torquay at outragious speeds that today would have probably put us both behind bars !!! Norbert , in spite of being well liked by all who met him sadly took his own life in 2001. Still miss him. Once again , my apologies Donald .

Sweet, sweet sound and a snappy dresser behind the wheel - refinement.
That interior is fantastic with its simple, clean, and tactile appearance. How I wish auto makers would turn back the clock a little, ditch the tablet on the dashboard, and make the experience more about the drive.
Thanks for your efforts Mister Osborne.

Really enjoyed this, and the story at the end was touching. Early 911s (and 912s) are some of the greatest driver's cars ever made.
It's interesting you mention the linearity. I remember in a period magazine test of the early 911 the driver noting that the car maintained the same handling attitude from normal driving all the way to 10/10s at the limit, which made it more confidence inspiring to drive quickly than the FR cars in the test, which tend to handle very differently at the limit than they do at 8 or 9/10ths.

I remember well the first time my Dad pointed out a 911 to me in 1979 and looking at the profile the Fuchs it looked remarkable to 5 year old me. I had come home from hospital from birth in Dads 356 and had seen Ferraris and exposed to many special cars over my life but can see that 911 in my mind to this day. Lovely presentation beautifully articulated experience.

Great video! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I bought an Irish Green '67 911 (non S) when I was in college in Southern New England. Being an New England car it had rusty floors that the previous owner had fiberglassed over and then undercoated. Of course, all I saw was 911 and didn't really pay attention to that when I bought it. I just remember it was sublime to drive around MA and RI. As you say, it cemented by deep love for Porsche and the 911. I currently have a g body (1980 SC) that I like driving around, but I still miss that '67 45 years later.

@@AudrainMuseumNetwork Thanks for the invite. I’m such a fan of old, light-weight, air-cooled Porsches. I really like how you expressed that the 911 “feels as if it was carved from a solid block”. That’s almost exactly what I said when I got to ride in a wonderful ‘68 911 a few years ago! It’s also uncanny how one feels the nuances of the road surface yet the ride is so smooth. Thanks again for reminding me!

Donald....many many thanks for such a BRILLIANT review of the original Porsche 911S. I just LOVE these cars and your driving review was clear, factual and to the point ! In fact Donald, I saw this model at the Porsche factory in 1967 with my father when the 911S was just released. I still have all of the factory brochures that represented this car including the large brochure which was presented in an envelope including the color card and the price list. These brochures are as close as I will ever get to an original 911S Porsche ! many many thanks, gerhard a. hendricks (Australia)

The familiarity is easy to explain. The 911 was inspired by the 356, which itself was inspired by the VW Beetle so the friendliness comes ultimately from everyone’s Love of the Beetle. Hence we love its Grandchild, the 911. All from Ferdinand’s family.
