Wow, I would have loved to have been there! If there is one thing us Brits,Germans,Italians,French can be proud of its our engineering, and I must say, the drivers!! No regard for there lives it's all about winning, death or glory, no wonder they had to ban it!!!!

Thank you so much, it's so rare to see quality footage from this era that hasn't been seen before. I like the fact that you can see the illegal plastic skirts that Peugeot had fitted to their T16's, even though they new that the rules forbade any evolutions of any sort for the rest of that tragic season before Group B was banned by FISA President Jean Marie Balestre and FISA. Even though FISA's own rules said that they had to give the manufacturer's 2 years notice of any rule change J M Balestre just said tough its gone and for whatever reason Group S which was replacing Group B in 1987 was also consigned to the scrapheap. That decision I have never understood as it was a much more toned down and restrictive rally class for pure futuristic prototypes with power capped at 300 bhp and weight down to 600 kg with only 10 or 20 cars having to be produced in a year to qualify, with Lancia's ECV, Opel Kadet 4 S, Toyota MR-S, Audi 002 Quattro and Ford were going to develop a Group S version of the RS200. I also have heard rumors that Peugeot were going to make a Group S T16 but I have never even seen an blueprint or mock up drawing but it's unthinkable that they wouldn't have done a car for the new rallying class considering the success they had had and the money they invested, they also considered suing FISA and the FIA for breaking their own rules but this came to nothing but Peugeot went off in a sulk and withdrew from rallying until they came back to the WRC with the 206 WRC and cleaned up again.

Can you tell me what the Gr. B Homologation rules are? This is of course a rhetorical question. Most of the cars you see in this video were developed specifically for rally, with only 200 having to be sold to the public. Even then, they for the most part only had to look similar to their road going counterparts. Group B cars my friend, were at the top of the pack for their time and to this day are still considered, by many, to be the greatest rally cars ever built.

This cars might be really powerful but it's clear they aren't as fast as the WRC cars from the past 10-12 years

Do you know that stage records were beaten starting in 1989, just 3 years after the abolition of GrB?? And those records were beaten with the EARLY group A cars, those that had usually less than 300hp (180hp less than the Delta S4) and weigthed 1230kg (400kg more than a Metro 6r4)

I feel i should join this debate. Yeah, i'm 16, i've been born into historic rallying, dad's always had escorts, mk1's and 2's, driving one of them is a billion times harder than driving.. lets say.. a scooby, if you breaked too hard back then you would lock up, if you break hard now you've got ABS, you had NO power steering in these cars, therefore it's much more of a challenge keeping it on the road. I respect the skill of modern drivers, but the true greats of the sport are the oldies. (:

I don't argue about that todays WRCs are faster - it's fact, but better tires, suspension and all about electronics made them so fast, give all that to Group B cars and you have monsters, better looking with better sound and sooo much faster then WRCs, cuz WRC now are slower then most of road stock cars, and that why rally suffer so low attencion.
I still prefer Group B even slower, or even 90s rally then castrated WRC cars.

Did you looked at with eyes? i think not. Dont be mislead and proceed to check manual. Because since Group B canceling rallye stages started change: numbers of stages and their lenght getting less and less, and summary rally size was less than old almost always. I even didnt mention other sort\editions of tracks at ever next year. and if compare those few rare similar stages between 84-85-86 & 89< u can see about gr.b times less at the least 10-15secs.

  • @RavesevenRavenholm

also, u talking about Metro about 800kg, but Group B class requirements are explaining clear&well-know about regulations. And it is over 960kg for 3000cc of normal-aspirated engines. Metro had 2991cc. And S4 had more than 480hp at E2 edition which raced in 86. so, e.t.c for suspension, chassis and other gr.b details.

"driving skills has improved too" What?. The fact that there maybe are less mistakes is just because the cars are easier to drive and the rallies are shorter. But still Latvala and Novikov crashes constantly with modern cars.
