My favorite Era of World Rally. The shots of the 124 Fiat Abarth Rally Spider and the Fiat 131 Rally cars always put a smile on my face. I have a 124 Spider Rally car and drive it whenever I can...those cars from that time were the best, and set the stage for what it is today. Nothing sounds better than a Fiat Lampredi twin cam engine with a set of twin Weber 44 Idfs echoing through the countryside...Bravo video!
We used to get a minute or two on RTE, it was never enough. The buzz it gave me was transferred elsewhere, like about 20 pints. It was awesome stuff and I still have difficulty believing they go so fast and with such control, mostly!!
Breathtaking to see those drivers maintaining control.I'm driving in a game called "Dirt Rally" in virtual reality. You get avery good impression what it is to drive in such a rallycar. And knowing that this is only a racing game I can only imagine what it is to drive these rallycars in reallity....and knowing that there are spectators along the way!
Cant beat the feeling of playing Dirt Rally with the escort and the h pattern shifter with clutch and handbrake! I love the feeling you get from clutch kicks, heel-toe downshifting and drifting while keeping those revs high!! its so facking satisfying i could only imagin it in VR!!
REALLY AMAZING RALLY DRIVING SKILLS ! PUSH THOSE RALLY CAR TO THE LIMITED ! OVER THE TOP ! PURE DRIVING SKILLS WITH PURE MECHANIC AND PURE ENGINE, NO ELECTRIC SYSTEM, ALL BY RALLY DRIVER TRULY DRIVING AND CONTROL THE CAR AND ENGINE, MAN AND CAR TO BE A "ONE" ! PERFECT !
hffp1 group a was also great, greater than group b in my opinion as they required for greater homologation numbers, giving rise to legends like the delta intergrale, Mitsubishi evolution, Subaru WRX STI, ford escort cosworth and the Celica. Road cars sold under this period of rallying really were watered down rally cars rather than today's rally "inspired" cars a.k.a jumped up road cars
Some great footage, but not all from the RAC Rally I think, if the logos above the competition numbers on some of the later footage is anything to go by. Also an excellent sound mix. It is not easy to record a rally car driving past a microphone as the volume increases dramatically as soon as the car passes the microphone. In that era most soundmen were using gun mic.s and the technique was usually to lift the mic. so that it did not point directly at the car as it passed whilst skilfully tweaking the gain to even things out. This sequence has also been beautifully mixed by a dubbing mixer to smooth out any imperfections in the original recordings. No wonder so many viewers have enjoyed it.
Yes, only first part is RAC Rally 1977 (and no Fiat's, Saab's or Opel's are shown). Second part is a mix of Sanremo, 1000 Lakes, Acropolis, Portugal of different editions (mid late '70s and early '80s). The Fiat 131 Abarth's for example are shown in 1977, 1978 and 1980 colors.
Went away from Britain rather at times towards the end ??? was it because the RAC rally was a bit of an escort procession ? Was there at the time & Hannu Mikkola in the corolla was stunning .
this is amazing a great "obrigado" from Portugal. And now just a smal question: do you have a time machine? otherwise how did you manage to bring a Lancia Stratus (minute 0,58) to race with a Vauxhall Celica and a Ford Escort Rs? But the result is pure ballet and that sound sinfonic music :)
Brilliant footage. No computers ...mobile phones ....just pure Rallying !
Absolutely correct. Fantastic time to witness and be involved
Nice,I Would Go to RAC Rally every Year as a Kid I was 9 in 77.Better Sound and sidways action than the Cars in 2023
I am an old man now but i used to rally a mini
meet me
I hope it gave you a lot of pleasure friends and success. Best wishes sir.

Thank you. I love the way those cars sounded like wild animals with the carburetor engines. today the WRC cars sound more like battle droids.
Trop beau 😍 et surtout excellent 👌
Bientôt tout sera électrique : de vrais rasoirs sur 4 roues 🤮
Thank you so much, it was around this time my father first took me to see rallying and got me hooked on cars for life. Brings back fond memories.
+Adrian Warner777 Rally is the most exciting motorsport, specially from the 70s and 80s.
It would have been around 1982 I first saw it (aged 8), as a kid it was mind blowing.

Me too. So much so that during the late 90's I then did rallying for 10 years - until the money ran out.
goshh awesomei was on most of that year .. travelled all over for days and was cream crackered ..thanks for the memories tc
Extraordinary camerawork!
The tracking shot at 4:30 of the escort...
Wow.
貴重な映像を見せて頂きありがとうございます
No ABS, no airbags, no launch or stability control etc etc. So much better than the crap today.
Real pilot ,strong🦾
old days where so nice i wish i was born in that time lol beutiful machines amazing drivers
Superb driving and sound. That Stratos looked bloody fast.
Bjorn Waldegaard was the only driver who really got it to work properly on the RAC. Unforgettable.
4 years after my last comment and I'm still watching mikkola power sliding round that final corner at Oulton Park. 😲
Quality! Thanks.
Love the sound of these engines raw power!
woah!!! Super video

Mersi de upload nea alecu' ! :))
Wow that celica had a bit more power thAn mine did! But I still drove it like that! 😁
Rear wheel drive rally cars were the best!
Fantastic
Fond memories. I marshalled on one stage and spectated on another 2. Didnt sleep for 36 hours. My car at the time was a rally prepped escort twin cam.
thank you
Proper rallylng

Me too, I'm also driving a MINI😂😂
Awesome thanks
Réal good.
Great video!
Well all is RWD, but they drive like a 4wd, magnificent!!!
The fastest driving is when you use grip of all 4 tires. These guys knew how to do this.
NICE TO WATCH THIS
Brilliant action with cars very much like you could buy for the road - unlike the 4wd kit cars of today, which share only a similar silhouette.

fan..tastic
Wow, what else to say.. So many escort!
Is it me or are these faster than todays WRC, They certainly look fasrer
😂racing In one of its purest forms

Great comment sir. Thank you for adding your expertise and experience.
@@RDeckardN6Thank you for adding your expertise. 👍
Que locura como sonaban esos Scort
3:25
sorry i forgot to say on the very same stages , happy days
when rallying WAS rallying
Went away from Britain rather at times towards the end ??? was it because the RAC rally was a bit of an escort procession ? Was there at the time & Hannu Mikkola in the corolla was stunning .
Just LUV me dat Celica`s 152E engine's intake soundtrack.
100% an engine not enough people even know existed.
this to be honest looks much more exciting than even group B
Always associate Roger Clark with a MK1 escort but he's pretty good in that MK2 as well

It happened. Golden days.
They all competed.
Same era.
By 77 the Stratos was soon to be 'obsolete' the escort rs may look less impressive but was the car to beat along with the 131 Abarth
2:29 sound fun
