Possibly the most beautiful couple ever on screen in possibly the most tender moment. I have lived with this music all my life. It’s still heartbreaking. This is not a movie, it is elevated beyond that. This is art.
The voices were dubbed (as is often the case and nothing wrong with that) but for naturalism of the mouth and throat movements the actors were asked to sing along during filming. Michel Legrand said "they sang like crows". Visually and musically the film was a work of art.
I think both actors were dubbed because they couldn’t sing. Singer Danielle Licari dub for Catherine Deneuve and singerJosé Bartel dub for Nino Castelnuovo (Italian actor originally).
I think this might be my very first comment on UA-cam. I watched this movie at the theater with my then boyfriend two years ago. We hadn’t even planned on going to the theater that day, and we bought the tickets so randomly we didn’t even know it was a French movie. But we ended up having so much fun and we loved the movie. I loved the song so much and kept listening to it on repeat for months after that then eventually sorta forgot about it. We broke up two months ago and I just found myself searching for the song and crying my heart out listening to it. I miss him so much it physically hurts my heart. We were together for 9 years. Idk why I’m writing this here but I just needed to share this with anyone.. I hope he’s doing better than me.
Why have you broken up. What a waist. I.feel sorry for both of you. Any chances of restarting your love? Don't waist your life and spoil your future. Call that silly man back!

In his film, Jacques Demy tackles a large number of important subjects in French society around 1960 : The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is one of the first films to evoke the Algerian war (from 1954 to 1962), a taboo subject in France. Jacques Demy places the Algerian war at the center of Geneviève's misfortunes. Even if the war only appears implicitly, with Guy's departure, his letters and his return, it is still war that ultimately plays the leading role, determining the future of the two heroes. Very few French works give a place to this event, however significant in French history. The Algerian war is not mentioned in all its aspects, since it is not the subject of the film, but precise details are given, from the point of view of Guy, a French soldier: the long duration of military service, but also : « Last night a patrol was ambushed and three soldiers died » (the letter) - « A grenade attack was frequent » (the return) - « The sun and death travel together ».

Marvelous film, superb cinema that tells a simple story very well. In life's great irony, I was shown this French film in California by an older Korean friend as a Chinese man. I think the whole Algiers War conscription thing really spoke to him. Life really is this simple: You live, shits out of your control happens, regrets, and you live on. The ending when they met again but now each had their own life to live, really speaks about the universal regrets we all share, whenever and wherever you live, whomever you are.
Ce film s'appelle Les Parapluies de Cherbourg. C'est une comédie musicale et dans cette comédie musicale il y a cette chanson qui pour moi est une des plus belles chansons d'amour qui soit. C'est une chanson qui me touche énormément.

I look for any indication of insincerity on her part... No. They were kids, she meant it, but she was just unable to make that commitment. His eventual disappointment must have been wrenching.
What commitment? Her mother was against them, she loved him. Her mother made her turn against her love since she heard nothing of him and thought how could she raise her baby by herself. The world was a so different back then. To be a single young mother out of wedlock? A catastrophe! The only thing she was able to think, also to protect the lover her life’s baby, was to marry a respectable decent man that adored her and would take care of them. The whole story is a tragedy about situation. They were in love and they would have been happy together, but the world takes us on different paths and we can’t always choose what will happen.
Le Grand genius for composing a melody note for note and lyricist genius for translating word for you a song originally composed in Yiddish - genius even though melody and lyrics were written by older, fellow Jewish people.
My father confirmed this with his cousin who composed The Man of LaMancha”. Didn’t need a rabbi - my dad needed a cousin who was a well known composer to look at the Yiddish sheet music he found in a specially store in the mid 1960s in New York. My cousin Mitch Leigh looked at the Yiddish public domain song on the sheet music and confirmed. Surprised but he confirmed
@ it was called in Yiddish “I Will Wait For You”. My father found the sheet music for it in Yiddish in New York back in the late 1960s. My father’s cousin composed the score for Man of La Mancha - Mitch Leigh. My father had told Mitch he was sure Le Grande took an old Yiddish song in public domain and rewrote it word for work and note for note. My cousin Mich Leigh didn’t believe my dad, so my dad went looking and presented the Yiddish sheet music to cousin Mitch. Mitch Leigh was more than surprised. I would say New York or anywhere that still has Yiddish sheet music would jabs it.
Dear Yarraa I noticed, from your writing that you are very distressed about the lost relationship and what keeps you going and reminds you of the love you broke is this song. Since I was a child I always noticed that what is in the heart, the songs and characters float and rise in the wonderful music we heard at the time. I wish you from the bottom of my heart that you find the love of your heart soon because what you went through together will soon come back to you. . good luck
The desperation of Genevieve is clearly shown in this memorable scene. Guy dodged a cannon ball, not a bullet. And his wife is SO lovely, still deeply in love, but her own person. The last scene of the film shows the vacant shell that she has become in a few short years, while Guy is determined to be happy with his new life. And by the way, "waiting forever" is hardly what Deneuve's character did. She married another man within a year. NEITHER of those two were in love with each other.
