Agree! I’ve bought 3 pre loved but at reasonable prices. The mini Evelyne is £1600 ish in store online they are priced at £2000-£3000 no chance an I going to pay that to line someone else’s pocket.
Every time I hear an account of what a person has to do or may done to get a quota bag from Hermes, it boggles the mind, Deb. The entire time I was listening to your experience of what is required I could hear Queen and Freddie Mercury singing “Play the Game” in my head. I’m pleased that you were able to get some quota bags in store the past. Perhaps you’ll be able to in the future.
I have a number of Hermes bags and got two pre-loved. My Birkin 35 in the most perfect Blue Electric color I got from the RealReal boutique. The color and the size were perfect for me and I jumped on it as soon as I saw it. I paid below retail for it probably because of the size. A B30 of the same color was standing right next to mine and it was $4K above retail. But my Birkin is my travel bag, my baby’s bag that holds all of her toys and god knows what else we bring with us when we go out, and it’s my laptop bag that fits everything. My Kelly I bought from a friend who no longer wanted her. My friend charged me the price she paid for the bag when she bought it years ago, so the price I got was significantly below retail. I then saw the same bag at a reseller for about $9K more. Everything else I got in store from Hermes, including my Constance wallet to go which makes an excellent mini bag and provides a counterbalance to my B35. I carry it when I go out at night.
Deb, take a trip to Hong Kong. There are no such ridiculous pre-spend rules in Hermes stores there. The staff laughs when you ask them about pre-spend and will tell you that they don't do that there. You get treated WAY WAY better in ALL luxury shops, not just Hermes. If they have the item, they will sell it to you and not lie! There are 5 Hermes stores in Hong Kong alone and you will be able to buy anything you want. The first time I walk into one, a number of birkins and kellys were available to buy including a 35 birkin in grey ostrich leather. Luxury goods are cheaper also because there's no taxes. People just knows how to do business there and understand what true luxury customer service is. After a horrible experience in one of the Paris Hermes store, I will never step foot in another one in the western world again!
@razi-kw6gb I don't know which Hermès store you went to in Paris and I'm sorry you had a bad experience. There are 8 Hermès stores in Paris (not including the Hermès corners in the department stores) and I've never heard about wish lists in any of them. All their products are available straight away and I'd one is missing the guarantee that they'll get it within 48h or deliver it to you. It' weird having to pre-spend a fortune to be offered a bag in your wish list.
I’m with you on this. I rather the shop from the boutique, the resale prices are outrageous! But some ppl prefers to pay the hefty price and not waiting or buying things as part of pre spending
I enjoy watching Hermes and luxury bags videos, my lifestyle here in Alaska is a no for me. One day maybe I’ll invest in a LV or Fendi for those special occasions we have an event to attend. My luxury spending is fabric and beads.
The “quota” and popular styles, like Evelyne , are difficult to find for less than retail, but other less well known or vintage styles are! Same Hermes leathers and quality. I’m in the US, so I normally shop Fashionphile for preloved.
I personally find the way that Hermes treats their customers offensive. I don't own a Hermes bag and suspect I never will. My dream bag would be a Kelly 25, and I could afford one from store, but that is never happening :)
My budget isn't enough for Hermes, from store or preloved. That being said, I can understand going preloved as you know the price up front. If you have to do a pre spend to get offered something in store, you don't know how much it'll be, or even if you get offered something approaching the bag you're after. And if you turn something down, how much more do you need to buy before another offer comes up? At least with preloved, you have a little more control. It's a crazy system, but it does seem to have worked for Hermes.
Second hand prices seem reasonable (😂 you know what I mean) on some of the Aussie consignment stores. A K28 in a neutral shade like Gris Etain or Etoupe is around £13,000, so certainly not double, Constance can be £8,000 which is similar to new I think. A B30 looks to be 1.5x original so only the B25 seems to be daft prices still. Well they’re all daft but we’re talking Hermès here so sensibility goes out the window 😅. No bait buying and you get the colour you want. It’s the route I’d take if I wanted a bag for sure.
With the economy there’s a slow down. I personally wound not buy preloved because of the price. There are Hermes bags all over the internet. Seems pretty common so I don’t want one if I could get it.
Honestly I think social media and the influence of luxury on younger people means that the demand for Hermes bags is ridiculous. I have to say that most times in Paris and London when I’m in the store it’s mostly foreign tourists in there because they spend so much in their home countries to acquire one. Paris is a complete lost cause in my opinion for Hermes bags as the SA’s are being screamed at by shoppers literally begging for appointments and bags. Women under 25 are owning these bags and I always thought they were a more older person bag. In London it’s supposed to be fair but I think you do need a rapport and a pre spend, same in Paris you definitely 99% of the time need a pre spend. I haven’t been successful in buying a QB yet and preloved is not an option at the prices they are. Who knows what the future holds but the demand if anything is increasing and where Paris used to be an elegant experience sadly is quite desperate now and o think that’s a shame. Do Hermes need to make it a bit fairer for people abroad, or at least stick to the 2 bag limit as it’s quite obvious from resellers that most bags are being sold Brand new from the store. Also like Claire Chanelle - she’s getting 4 rare quota bags a year offered while others have zero and she’s already so fortunate to have over 10 bags. I love bags I went to LV after an Hermes trip and bought a fab bag from the mannequin that was for sale hoorah! Great customer service great purchase I went home so happy! That’s what it should be really. Xxx
There are SO many preloved Hermes bags out there so I really don’t understand why they’re SO much. Bonkers they’re more than new when they’re available new still. IMO!
I have friends who’ve spent $30k-$40k without an offer! There’s no way in bloody hell I would do that. There’s plenty of trustworthy resellers who have bags brand new for maybe $10k over retail.
I do find this whole concept around the Hermes bag extremely puzzling. All the money these bags are fetching, but not by Hermes themselves. I watched a video a year ago, where somebody walked straight out of a leather appointment in Harrods to a reseller and sold the new unboxed bag for considerably more than they had just paid for it! I can’t help thinking Hermes have their model wrong. These days you just tend hear people talking about their dissatisfaction with the whole purchasing process. In comparison I hear people talking about the wonderful experience when you shop in Fendi. Years ago, I had the Birkin on my own personal Wish List. I’m not interested now. I like the Evelyn and the Trim (I generally like the hobo shape, so this season has been great for me) but when I go shopping, I want it to be a fun, enjoyable experience, not stressful and belittling. Loved this video because as it reflects so many of my thoughts.
Thank you so much. My thoughts are that Hermes love the fact people resell as it keeps the brand looking unattainable and shows massive resale potential x
Hey Deb. So Cal Deb again…..I refuse to buy things I do not want from any store. So pre-love for me. Actually I am noticing the prices are going down on quite a few Hermes bags. I even saw a Birken 25 at cost in very good condition but that is rare. Since I am in LA there is no way I can compete with all the movie industry people so the 2 bags I have are pre-love. I am on the hunt for one more and then I might be done so we will see.
I have boutique bags and preloved and i love them both. I was able to source very hard to get bags preloved for less than I would have had to spend in other goods to qualify. The rarity of leather and colors I found made up for the slight over retail cost. I found a full set Barenia Foubourg B30 for less than $20k in perfect condition with the plastic still on and the wait for that in boutique was impossible.
In years to come, when Hermes have tanked and nobody wants to buy a silly Birkin or Kelly, people in the future will read the ridiculous things people had to do and pay to get one of these bags and just shake their heads in utter disbelief
I read but cannot verify that the Hermes sales associates do not make a commission on quota bags so often the SA will work to sell you other merchandise so that they gain their commission. One could assume that when they have earned sufficient commissions then the SA will offer a person a quota bag. Hermes the company sets this game up but I don’t know why it is set up so that the SA does not earn a commission on quota bags. Of course it does seem that not all Hermes stores worldwide nor all Hermes SA will play this game with customers. I will not play the game to buy merchandise from Hermes that I do not want. I have one Birkin, two Kelly’s and one Bolide and these bags were bought preloved, in very good condition and no price was over usd 8000 and these purchases go back several years. I have some small Hermes leather goods, scarves and costume jewelry that I have been bought new. One personal story was that when I was in a Hermes store in France the SA offered to me to try on watches that ranged from usd25000 to usd 75000 so I can only assume that the prices of these watches would really assist in a pre-spend amount. 😂😂😂
Thank you for sharing this. Yes things have definitely changed and yes I suspect an offer for a bag would be forthcoming if you bought one of those watches x
Which Hermes bag would you buy next? I love the Evelyn in that eggplant type color! Personally, I would not, actually could not, carry a Birkin or any bag that couldn't be converted into a lightweight crossbody. My back is so messed up, that I have no choice. Funny how quickly I realized I could get everything I need into a medium crossbody!
Bought the Loom 25 from Loro Piana and it is easy and way Cheeper and i adore it. Hermes has to change because luxury is going down for sure. People are Sick of such a behaviour and with the Tons of replicas out there it is nothing Special regrettfully.
I have an "Hermès" bag from The Real Real, and I like the style and color so I'm going to carry it even though I'm pretty sure it's not real. :P It's a Masai cut in Ebene.
