Syd is rightfully acknowledged as a master songwriter but he sadly hasn't been elevated to the pantheon of guitar heroes even though his guitar playing was wildly innovative. Some of his most memorable guitar work is on this gem of a track. Syd was the master at playing his guitar through a Binson Echorec unit and coaxing the most otherwordly sounds out of it and it's all here on Candy And A Currant Bun which amazingly was only a B side. The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long. RIP Syd, Love You!
I bought the Arnold Layne single so long ago, I can't remember... but when I heard this on the other side I just freaked out!!! I have been a major fan and collector of Psychedelia from all corners of the Earth ever since. What an astonishing era it was and still is.....
its amazing how many great songs Syd created before the age of 22!!! when people compare Syd's Floyd with post-Syd Floyd it drives me CRAZY. Syd's Floyd was together for less than 3 years and during that time they put out Piper, Emily, Arnold Layne, Candy Currant Bun, and some others such as Jugband Blues. On top of that, their LIVE performances were the highlight of London's psychedelic Underground, 14-hr Technicolour Dream, Games For May, and so many awesome moments. Then ON TOP OF THAT, Syd's style and unique guitar inspired Bowie, Marc Bolan, Hitchcock, and MANY MANY more artists. Also consider that the other members of Floyd were still very young and learning their instruments too. The Post-Syd Floyd was also extremely awesome, successful, and influential to this day and beyond, but they had 2 decades of time to do it along with all the financial freedom and creative freedom they needed. Syd deserves all the credit he gets and then some. As Roger Waters himself said, "it couldn't of happened without Syd" and "Syd was the key that unlocked the door for me as a songwriter". Syd's bravery and creative energy birthed Pink Floyd, period. He was the muse behind Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Shine On, The Wall (did I forget any)!!! Shine On SYD!!!!!!
When performed live in 1967, the song was known as "Let's Roll Another One" and contained the line "I'm high - Don't try to spoil my fun", but the record company forced Syd Barrett to rewrite it, at the suggestion of Roger Waters, without the controversial drug references. Nevertheless, the recorded version added the line "Oh don't talk with me/Please just fuck with me", which the BBC censors missed.
[05 May 2022] Heady, heavy and sensual. You just know that Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt and Daevid Allen all listened hard to this, and that they all set out to top it. Arguably with "Feelin, Reelin', Squealin'" and "Lullaby Letter", they came close.
Oh, my girl sitting in the sky Go buy candy and a currant bun I like to see you run Lay back Don't talk to me Please, just fuck with me Please, you know I'm feeling frail It's true, sun shining very bright It's you, I'm gonna love tonight Ice cream tastes good in the afternoon Ice cream tastes good if you eat it soon Don't touch me child Please, know you drive me wild Please you know, I'm feeling frail Don't try another cat Don't go where other you must know why Very, very, very frail Oh, my girl sitting in the sun Go buy candy and a currant bun I like to see you run Like that
Putting this on a B-side on Arnold Layne was criminal. Another dumb decision by early management, showing again it was their first rodeo. This song is among Syd’s best. Imagine had they pulled it out in summer of ‘67 and released after See Emily Play and current with Piper’s release. Pete Jenner may have understood money and contracts, but he sure didn’t know much about the music business or managing artistic talent, at least at that point.
TheRollingBeachFloyd Yeah, but the trippiest sound by Floyd was Cirrus Minor in the outro. It's the bleeping effect on Wright's keys. Sparkled was a term we used in Glasgow in the 90s to say to folk we were tripping. Cheers.
The Pink Floyd experience is like a psychedelic chewing gum. The first taste is so out of this world you can hardly take the joy without crying in ecstasy, but the further you delve into the later history the more stale the chewing gum becomes. And then, when bombast fully replaces finesse you spit it out because all the taste is gone. You could as well chew on PVC.

Nobody in this world touched me in the way Syd has, he was truly magnificent. He was so beautiful too.
You are right he was a great guitar player. Perhaps not a supper techno like Beck or Page but very innovative.

Excellent points. And refreshing to hear someone not do this “Syd vs. post-Syd” bashing.
about 55 of them, excellent post here. Well stated.
Surely you mean it drives you wild (DRIVES YA WILD)?
Syd’s work sounds very modern to me, sort of reminiscent of the Dunedin sound in the 80s/90s.
get a life loser

The Syd Floyd Era is amazing !

I like the psychedelic Pink Floyd much better than later Pink Floyd. Especially Syd Barrett, who was in the band a short time.

Great song; however, in the instrumental break Rick Wright's organ run sounds virtually identical to the one on "Arnold Layne."

WOW! This is excellent! First time hearing it and I saw Rodger Waters at the Berlin Wall concert
Robyn Hitchcock brought me here. Happy posthumous 76th birthday Roger.
There is an amazingly bass solo on this.
@1:22 Sounds like the instrumental on See Emily Play
Syd is one of the most underrated guitar players. Part of that is him being highly overshadowed by David Gilmour
The very first six barret singles are zi best by far!
Miraculous Arnold Layne B-side.

it wouldn't fit the record. would be best to have a record with all Syd's singles, Scream Thy Last Scream, Astronomy Domine and Lucifer Sam

Kelly14UK Cirrus Minor is a great track. But i can't decide which Floyd song is the trippiest. There's just too much to choose from.
Proto glam rock

I think Syd was very frail. His health wasnt good. He had mono twice in the same year.
"Oooh, don't talk to me
Please just fuck with me
Please you know I'm feeling frail" Menos bla bla y directo al grano xD
Todo sería más fácil si fuéramos directos con nuestras intenciones.

I mean, that lyric is “just walk with me” right? Not the the other word that people seem to keep hearing?
No, it's officially "fuck with me" - actually first in the history of music on a recording.
@@MrGyl666 Time for me to buy new ears
It’s fuck, EMI asked him to change the song title to be less about weed so he added that “fuck” as revenge
Okay, I get wet with the song and others from Syd but not as much as with Arthur Lee's
