      It was the LSD that made him a genius.

    • @StarryStarryNocturne
      @StarryStarryNocturne 5 років тому +44

      LSD doesn't make anyone geniuses. You'll find more LSD bums that never did anything with their lives than you'll find "geniuses" made so by LSD. All LSD does is stimulate the imagination a mind already has to work with. That's why one songwriter will take LSD and come up with "The End" (The Doors), another will take it and come up with "Slip Inside This House" (13th Floor Elevators), and another will come up with "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "I am the Walrus" (The Beatles) and Syd will come up with Astronomy Domine, Interstellar Overdrive, See Emily Play and Bike. Same with the adverse effect of LSD when it comes to it's casualties, one will fall into a mental hell of devils and demons because they grew up in Southern Christian environment (Roky Erickson) and someone like Syd will just regress to a reclusive, revisited permanent childhood in his mother's basement. It doesn't make anyone smarter, or plant ideas into someone's head out of the ether, it just opens the flood glates of someone's own imagination, that's it.

      I love Syd he's my favorite guitarist and probably even musician over all. But If there's is one thing I have to admit is this wasn't "ahead of his time." It was according to the times. Even around 1966 this music was already out there. But an incredible amazing tune either way. Syd just puts together a style that 6obody has!

    • @jjjb9098

      +jjjb9098 I wouldn't say he was ahead of his time. I'd say he was exactly of his time. What made Syd special is he was so damn innovative. No one could match his pure creativity and innovation. He was a completely unique individual who's music matched that.

    It seems that most Syd fans prefer The Madcap Laughs over Barrett but Barrett holds a very dear place in my heart. Most of the tunes are very lively and Syd is blessed to have some sympathetic musicians backing him which adds a special magic to the tunes.
    Gigolo Aunt is especially good natured. Almost a Pink Floyd reunion! Rick Wright's jaunty keyboards and Dave Gilmore's nimble bass combine with Jerry Shirley's on point drumming to give Syd the wings he needs to feel comfortable and soar. His guitar playing isn't as cosmic as his Pink Floyd days but quite memorable and jolly. We may never know what a Gigolo Aunt is but we'll always know that Syd was a one of a kind bright light that went out far too soon. But his lovely songs are his legacy that will always shine on.

      That's just a stupid comment with no substance. David is a far superior guitar player to Syd, and I'm not saying Syd wasn't great but not quite in the same league as Gilmour. It was David and Rick who produced the album and made the songs work. They added a lot of work to the songs. If you listen to Syd's first album Madcap Laughs (also produced by David but that time with Roger Waters) it was less produced and more raw but still great. But these two albums wouldn't have worked without the help of David, Roger and Rick being on hand. Syd was not stable at the time and was hell to work with and very hard to get anything done. But he was their friend and they wanted to help him.

    Syd was so influential to Pink Floyd that over half the songs they wrote after he left the band were about him. If that isnt a tribute to his influence on the band i do not know what is.

    Love this song. If this was never released as a single, it should have been! Shine on You Diamond. Not crazy. Misunderstood and mistreated. RIP! He was very good looking, talented, sensitive, and smart. Wish he would have surrounded himself with better people instead of ones who intentionally harmed him. Not saying he didn't make bad choices. If someone chooses to take drugs, not much you can do. But if people did spike your coffee, tea, and food with LSD, to me, that is cruel and evil. Anyone thinking LSD is going to expand your mind and make you more creative is in for a rude awakening. When college students jumped six floors to their deaths, they weren't smoking pot!

      People at the time didn't realize what the long-term or even short-term possible negative effects were of these drugs. Smoking some grass was one thing, hash another, alcohol another, but the hallucinogens were mainly new to most people. But nobody had taken that stuff in such large doses, for regular intervals, and it took a number of years for the ill-effects and acid casualties to show up. Do What Thou Wilt, but this credo had devastating consequences in many cases. I was born in 68 so I had no idea of any of this until learning about it in the 80s or 90s. I've still never taken any such thing, or any drugs at all, and I'm goddamned glad. Learning about Syd, even had I the inclination, was a wonderful deterrent, scared the living shit out of me hearing what befell him.

      @@thiscorrosion900 I'm glad you have made wise choices. The most hurtful thing a parent can deal with is losing a child. It happened to me. I lost my son a year ago. He was 35. It was a pill, not prescribed, and it contained fentanyl. I'm sure he didn't know this pain pill was going to end his life. China and Mexico can make pills look exactly like what our pharmaceuticals make. The have stamping machines and can add the letters and numbers. Sickening but true. I wish and hope Americans all over this country would be more careful about what they put into their bodies.
