Ronny, the K&N filter is a very bad choice! The K&N filter uses an applied gel which is applied to the gauze filter media. It’s this gel which captures the dust particles and offers very little dust holding capacity. When the gel is fully covered with dust, it will no longer filter the air and guess where the dust goes? You need to remove the filter and wash it (eg. kerosene) to remove the dust and then re-apply the gel. Furthermore, your engine bay is a hot environment which quickly dries out the gel, reducing its dust capturing efficiency. Also, have you asked Toyota if they honour your warranty using a K&N filter? A Donaldson blue media paper filter would be a much better filter choice which was developed for vehicles in dusty mines, and that’s what I fitted to my GU Patrol. If you want extra horsepower then just remove your air filter altogether and accept the serious damage to your engine. I’m a retired mechanical engineer with experience in air filtration - hope this info is useful to you and your subscribers.

Ronny you mentioned a weight bridge ... Two days ago a returned from an orvelanding trip round Greece . I have a Mitsubishi Challenger PA2 with a gvm of 2510 kilos . Hey Ronny, I agree 100% in view of filters and I have added a secondary to my 76 as advised by the Toyota service dept manager. I have not run a catch can on my past vehicles without issue, saying not having one will eventually damage the motor is not specifically correct. In fact there has been no side by side comparison of with or without a catch can on motors under the same conditions done to prove what is still a theory. Additionally, the catch can you use does not have a pressure relief valve. Hence, any seal issues with the motor will void warranty - I was advised this by the Toyota dealer including being shown a service depart memo sent to all Australia service departments in view of the same. Each too their own, but recommending to fit one is maybe not the best advise. Regardless, love your channel and keep up the great content. I'm still researching but YES to after market Fuel Filter and NO to catch can is where I'm at right now. Love your videos Ronny...
Hi Ronny, the additional fuel filter you’re adding is actually going to br the 3rd filter. 2017 Hilux and upwards have this filter that’s near the starter. It’s hard to explain through but it’s nearby there. Part number 22390-0E010. So stock, you have 2 fuel filter, upper and lower. So really the 3rd fuel filter isn’t really necessary.
I guess we will see over time how the catch can and primary fuel filter go on the 1GDFTV. Hopefully you are transparent enough to let us know or maybe even do a proof of concept video on the catch can. I'm not convinced it works that well myself yet. EGR plates with measured diameters holes seem to be another way to avoid this problem. I have seen a few other comments below regarding the load put on the engine from a primary filter and I tend to agree. While the primary filter works great on trucks and machinery that I work on, I'm not sure the pump in the 1GD is up to the task.

Just a word of caution regarding adding extra fuel filtration. It is a GREAT idea and I have added two extra filters on my Silverado, in the form of a FASS system. The word of caution applies to the restriction that added filtration can cause. If the vehicle doesn't have a lift pump (in other words it relies solely on the injector pump creating a vacuum in order to suck the fuel from the tank), then the additional filtration can potentially create additional load on the EXPENSIVE injector pump. The FASS system I have fitted incorporates a 150 gallon per hour pump down near the tank...it draws the fuel from the tank and forces it through all 3 filters at around 10psi, so the injector pump doesn't have to suck. Just a thought.... Also, could I give a plug to the Mann and Hummell Provent 200 oil fumes separator (ie: catch can). It is a far better option than that stainless steel jobbie. Do some research and you'll soon see why I say that.

Fantastic series on the Luxy, very real. Just wondering about the usefulness of the rear seat in "dualie". Highest selling vehicle category in Australia and the rear seat is rarely inhabited. I would love to see the space used cleverly (or just get a single/Super cab!)
Excellent setup! That said, and BTW I have no idea what I'm talking about, from a weight distribution standpoint, I wonder if the fuel/water tank could be split front to back as opposed to side to side. This would require internal, baffles as well. As is, you could potentially have 50kg in one side and 0 in the other. If it matters, you would have to shift other gear around to compensate. Split front to back you will never have a left/right imbalance. Water. Agreed about the taste of water coming out of stainless as opposed to plastic. If you were to plumb in an alternate pickup up point and valve, you could use an auxiliary jerry or bucket to feed the pump for washing up and save the water in the stainless tank for drinking/cooking. You'd have to take care to load only potable water in the jerry to avoid any cross contamination. Otherwise, a completely separate pump and lines would be needed to use untreated backcountry water out of a jerry for washing.

G'day Ronny, I just bought a brand new Hilux and have been trying to find some info on these aftermarket electronic and spray on rust preventatives that the dealership tried to sell me. I chose not to pay for it because I wanted to do some research but have struggled to find credible information about them. I found a company that is using a picture of your 79 on their website so was wondering if this means you use a proper permanent rust prevention system and if so what type? I tried to find if you had already done a video on this but couldn't find one and your no BS opinion on commercial rust prevention products would be greatly appreciated. Cheers mate.
Great idea. My long ranges tank sits to one side and thus loads the suspension on one side more. Plus with all the weight over the very front of the vehicle with the bullbar and winch. I'd very keen to see the break down per corner.

@Shaun McCarthy There are GVM upgrades that just involved a suspension upgrade. Lovells, ARB, TJM, Ironman they all do it for different vehicles. They keep the upgrades below the capabilities of the existing brakes etc...

8:20 yes, the only two things I've done for engine protection is install a Provent catch can and a Fuel Manager pre-filter kit. The DPF came on three times in in the first 9,000km before fitting a catch can. The DPF has not needed to do a regen since, now at 27,000km. I only empty the catch can at oil changes, every 5,000km, or thereabouts. I have a Fuel Manager pre-filter kit with bowl and water sensor installed. My ute has a factory water sensor in the fuel filter housing, but by the time this comes on, it could be a bit too late, if it's a lot of water. The pre-filter allows me to monitor visually what's dropping out of the fuel by looking through the bowl at oil services or whenever I want to, plus it gives me a warning light on the dash via the probe in the bowl (not a float). It should provide advanced warning of water in the fuel. If both the Fuel Manager and factory warning lights come on in quick succession, that means I've picked up a fair bit of water, and I need to sort it out straight away.
Waste of money, been driving diesel for 25 years, never seen a drop of water in fuel. Even if you ever will, the Hilux fuel filter system has triple protection, coarse and fine filter and water separator all in one unit. Just carry an extra filter.
@@adriankiraly5172 I'm in my 50's, so I've been driving diesels as long as you, and I've seen water in fuel a few times, though mostly out of fuel pods on the back of work utes. I don't have a Hilux, I have a Colorado, and my factory filters are two identical filters in one housing with a water sensor. There is no coarse or fine filtration, it's just one level of filtration. My Fuel Manager has a 30 micron filter with water separator and sensor, plumbed in pre-factory filter. I carry the two factory filters and one Fuel Manager filter in the rear draws.
I would consider wheel arch tanks 75-150 liter per side center the water tank @ 50-150 liter noting water is heavier than diesel... Personally Ronny if people do not have external fuel tanks and extended fuel tanks I would advise state a clause in the tag along legalities in your legal service definition if you don't have the fuel capacity to return to the closest fuel stop to target area 150-300km round trip we can not take you as it is a irresponsible exercise to support you in a reserve fuel capacity to get a limp back into a fuel station to obtain more Because realistically ronny you are building a tanker trailer to tow behind a vehicle either 150-300 liters x10-x30 depending how many vehicles you have in that convoy and the average sizes of the main and 2 reserve fuel tanks .. Don't care the distance you want to travel at, with the average fuel stop being 300-600k's between fuel stops you want to make sure the customer can refuel somewhere... and have enough fuel in the tanks (plural) to get to the next fuel station.. Water is a good thing to have however loose you all the fuel you have you are going to be dead anyway no fuel no power .. whether you run a Hilux, 70 series, 80 series, 100 series, 200 series or the latest 300 series cruiser, or other toyota models, this would be a common setup I would use .. if you are planning to store stuff on your roof space I would still consider a complete exo skeleton frame bolted and welded in 1 piece because what you have as a bullbar will not save you from a strike from: Cattle Emu Camels Roos and other large animals.. I do not believe in water channel secured racks sue to off road weight limits..

Hi Ronny. Been waiting for this episode. I didn’t catch the name of the company in Perth who made your water/fuel tank. I’d love this setup! But purely water as I already have 120ltr tank in my hilux.
Paper composite air filters filter vastly superior to a k&n mate. You can see daylight through the k&n. You can't through a paper. You get superior engine protection and less wear with the paper filters.
Curtin Uni did a study that showed the Mann & Hummel Provent 200 was a more effective catch can than the HPD and there are some others now that have done real world comparisons that seem to agree. I like it has a replaceable coalescing filter compared to just mesh. Were you aware of this?
Hi Ronny. Have you considered adding a Water filtration system to the mix so you can draw water from a creek or something when remote? Im considering that in a trailer Im building and would like your opinion.
@@Jacobtheunwise that's kind of my idea. I'm planning a water tank, battery and fridge as the main parts of my trailer build with the option to charge from my car or solar. Watch the Air filter resting and comparison on UA-cam by project farm. I too always used K and N. Not after watching that video. They do a terrible job of filtering.
Thinking the fuel/water tanks would be better if they ran side to side instead of fuel on one side and water on other. That way if you dump all fuel but still have water then the weight distribution wouldn’t change.
Great video Ronny! How do you fill up the second fuel tank if you're at the gas station? It seems a bit hard to reach the top with the fuel pump outlet.
I'm suprised you did not mention anything about cooling - like an oil cooler / trans cooler / upgraded radiator. The reason why I say this is most people in 4WD's suffer from overheating, especially when off-roading or stuck in a rut.

Otherwise, a completely separate pump and lines would be needed to use untreated backcountry water out of a jerry for washing.
interested to see final weights as can't believe your not going to be way over your GVM with all that extra fuel, water (and beers !!) In process of doing the same and its amazing how all those little items add up....good vid ronny, keep it going. Next series how to reduce weight ...ha ha...!!!
Payload capacity on that model is 995 kgs, so he's not over with just equipment, but with cargo and passengers, he'll be close.
@@AlexandarHullRichter think Ronny should do a guess the weight competition !! 625kg added weight plus 130kg (80 main 50 spare tank)added fuel, 6okg water plus a "average" weight 80kg ronny = 895kg thats 100kg for fridge (25kg),tent, bedding, cooking gear, cloths, food, beer, more beer....think ronny did GVM upgrade so maybe more capacity....lets see what final result is !!
It would also be interesting to see how the fuel consumption of the car evolves with all the mods.
On a diesel I've found aero dynamics do way more damage than weight. That roof rack would be the pits on economy.
@@HuntShootOffroad yeap, agree 100%. My aerodynamics drag experience was with a gasoline engine. A car that took 8L/100km at 110km/h moved to 9L/100km at 80km/h. That was because of a foldable RTT on top.
I would tend to believe that a gasoline engine would suffer more from drag, since it reaches high load easier as you ask for torque. But I have yet to test the diesel with that.
Nonetheless, what about the rest?
Ronnie is talking figures of 12L/100km on his hilux. That is high!
@@ingdanielluna will I've got the N70 in manual diesel and 9.8L/100 would be a bad trip. I have an alloy tray, no roof racks, bullbar, side steps and brush bars. Just got a GVM upgrade to keep me legal. I can now carry 2 people plus 400kg
Hi Ron the diff breathers/air silencers ,we use them to filter cutting fluid on saws and n c machines. So if u spray them with water it Wil get into your lines rgds Peter
Hi Ronny just started watching your vids.I'm loving them.
So I have Luxxy 2018 Rogue I want to fit the load lid but I can't seem to find the one where I can keep my rear bar like you have Also can you please give details of who did the storage lift lid on the tail gate.Great idea!! I'm based in Melbourne
I have hilux ln167. I swapped to k&n filter, I lost 200rpm at 100k per hr. I love that air filter
I hope you get weigt/pressure numbers for each wheel since it would be interesting to see how your balance is front to back as well as side to side
Great idea. My long ranges tank sits to one side and thus loads the suspension on one side more. Plus with all the weight over the very front of the vehicle with the bullbar and winch. I'd very keen to see the break down per corner.

What's that "pretty damn good coffee" please mate? Googling for it now. Great video as always. 👍🏻👍🏻

Hi Cool n clean shave . really really need a link to the Hard cover long lid that you use to store gear ,, I THINK iTSA PELICAN HARD COVER PLEASE SHINE SOME LIGHT
Luv ya channel Ronny, very informative and well presented. Any reason why not to include the additional 120kg in fuel and 50 kg in water to your weights ?
Ronny love your work mate keep it up been looking forward all week for ya vids brother cheers mate
When u take everything out that’s not bolted down and weigh it that tare weight.. your gvm won’t change unless you have done an upgrade
@Shaun McCarthy pretty sure mate. Nice little blue plate.
@Shaun McCarthy There are GVM upgrades that just involved a suspension upgrade. Lovells, ARB, TJM, Ironman they all do it for different vehicles. They keep the upgrades below the capabilities of the existing brakes etc...
@Shaun McCarthy do those suspension kits come with a mod plate? I heard him say the 600kg constant load was a gvm upgrade
Does the pump vibration annoy you on the tub ? Maybe some conveyor belt or thicker rubber mounts might be in order…. Just a thought. Awesome informative video mate
Great series mate, any sign of the last video?
Closing in on 400k Ronny! Onya mate!
The water/fuel storage tank is quite something. Keen to see how Mk2 would function plus, I think it might be great to have at least two combined options going; 100ltr or at least 150ltr. Cheers
Nice setup Ron! Definitely a great series.
Check out project farms Chanel, he tests air filters and I think u will want to see those results mate. Always save your fuel receipts and write mileage on them so you can have contamination of fuel covered. I know bp provides coverage if u get bad fuel from them in usa.
Great video as allows. There is a U Tuber called Whistlindiesel he has a Hilux he putting it through torture test and is still running. I say a very well built truck.
Can you link the water fittings source please. Also what's the coffee kit brand you used? GL with the weigh bridge!
Does the extra diesel/water tanks have interior walls (baffles?) to prevent the liquids from moving around while driving?
I carry the two factory filters and one Fuel Manager filter in the rear draws.
hi! If you want you can put a small camera in to engine bay ,next time you go through a river , to see exactly the water level!!
I would consider wheel arch tanks 75-150 liter per side center the water tank @ 50-150 liter noting water is heavier than diesel...
Personally Ronny if people do not have external fuel tanks and extended fuel tanks I would advise state a clause in the tag along legalities in your legal service definition if you don't have the fuel capacity to return to the closest fuel stop to target area 150-300km round trip we can not take you as it is a irresponsible exercise to support you in a reserve fuel capacity to get a limp back into a fuel station to obtain more
Because realistically ronny you are building a tanker trailer to tow behind a vehicle either 150-300 liters x10-x30 depending how many vehicles you have in that convoy and the average sizes of the main and 2 reserve fuel tanks ..
Don't care the distance you want to travel at, with the average fuel stop being 300-600k's between fuel stops you want to make sure the customer can refuel somewhere... and have enough fuel in the tanks (plural) to get to the next fuel station..
Water is a good thing to have however loose you all the fuel you have you are going to be dead anyway no fuel no power ..
whether you run a Hilux, 70 series, 80 series, 100 series, 200 series or the latest 300 series cruiser, or other toyota models, this would be a common setup I would use ..
if you are planning to store stuff on your roof space I would still consider a complete exo skeleton frame bolted and welded in 1 piece because what you have as a bullbar will not save you from a strike from:
Cattle
Emu
Camels
Roos
and other large animals..
I do not believe in water channel secured racks sue to off road weight limits..
Ronny did you ever find a good way of stopping dust getting into tailgate.
I put an EGR seal on mine and it’s been great. Uses a solid frame to hold the seal, so avoids the issues of glue breaking down with time and heat, etc
@@johannl555 I have a load lid as well, with a Grunt tailgate seal kit, it's pretty damn good to be honest! I reckon there's a tintttt little spot that could do with some silicone but it's not bad as is
I have a Toyota tailgate seal kit with the loadlid and mine unfortunately leak a bit still! Anyone got any suggestion how to fix this??
Working on it, I have a device I’m installing soon
Andrew of 4x has a video on this with bushtech worth a watch
Really find your videos interesting both the luxy and the landcruiser how ever it would be interesting to know what the average punter would have to pay to have these upgrades installed i appreciate you dont pay retail for everything and that is fair enough its a business for you and thats quite ok but to know what a person is up for would make good viewing and interesting content once again like your videos
Always find your videos interesting and entertaining, thank you
A lot of us use left-hand drive vehicles. I had to remind myself that your engine air intake is on the driver's side.
I find myself doing when watching American content too 😀
Great vid mate, thanks! Can you list the hose fittings you’ve used please? Having a tank added to our Prado at the moment. Thanks!
Nice one Ronny!
I have just bought a new Hilux in india. Sad part I cant get it modified due to new laws. Wish I can make it to Australia just for my Hilux
Hi Ronny. Been waiting for this episode. I didn’t catch the name of the company in Perth who made your water/fuel tank. I’d love this setup! But purely water as I already have 120ltr tank in my hilux.
Enjoy your videos - thanks. Sort of not related to this video, but where did you get your dash mat from and do you rate it? Thanks.
It would be great to know how much your fuel economy went up 😊
I think that coffee machine/ $6k elec. system remark was aimed at Torbs :)
Or that ridiculous chopped 200 series on 4WD 24/7
Would really like to know if the modifications you are making void the Toyota warranty
Ronny, love the Luxy. Where do you get them little coffee things from.. Lol😉👍👍
Paper composite air filters filter vastly superior to a k&n mate. You can see daylight through the k&n. You can't through a paper. You get superior engine protection and less wear with the paper filters.
Ronny needs to "fess-up" and tell his audience who his sponsors are.
I'm not sponsored by K&N in any shape or form. I've used them for nearly 20 yrs without any problems which is why I still use them.
@@Ronny_Dahl o.k. didn't say that, but engine "protection " ?
They are usually used to scavenge a few more ponies in race engines...
Good luck with the weigh in Ronny.
im jealous of this sweet ride
Curtin Uni did a study that showed the Mann & Hummel Provent 200 was a more effective catch can than the HPD and there are some others now that have done real world comparisons that seem to agree. I like it has a replaceable coalescing filter compared to just mesh. Were you aware of this?
I think PDP sell the HPD so that’s why he would have used it.
Hi Ronny. Have you considered adding a Water filtration system to the mix so you can draw water from a creek or something when remote? Im considering that in a trailer Im building and would like your opinion.
That would be awesome for a camper trailer but wouldn't you still need to boil it anyway?
@@Jacobtheunwise from what I understand you can buy filters that remove bacteria as well as crap. I'm still looking into this though.
@@MicksGarageDarts would make an awesome set up you could practically live out off if you can filter the water
@@Jacobtheunwise that's kind of my idea. I'm planning a water tank, battery and fridge as the main parts of my trailer build with the option to charge from my car or solar. Hoping to use it for longer trips touring etc. I just need to work everything out, get the cash and start the build. I will be filing for my UA-cam channel while I'm at it.
Planning a separate device that’s portable so I can use for either vehicle
Watch the Air filter resting and comparison on UA-cam by project farm. I too always used K and N. Not after watching that video. They do a terrible job of filtering.
You should do a whole egr delete if you really want to get some mileage out of that motor.
EGR flow reduction plate with a 13mm hole. Check out Fourby4Diesel.
This. Ronny should do it nice and quietly to preserve that engine. (then quietly ditch that catch can) ;)
Thanks for the share matey! Great template! 👍🏼
Where did you get the water nozzle and hose from? I've been looking for something exactly like this.
Ron get a hand pump wacaco nespresso machine with ur jetboil, its the go
Thinking the fuel/water tanks would be better if they ran side to side instead of fuel on one side and water on other. That way if you dump all fuel but still have water then the weight distribution wouldn’t change.
Great video Ronny!
How do you fill up the second fuel tank if you're at the gas station? It seems a bit hard to reach the top with the fuel pump outlet.
With skill
I attached a 90 and a 45 angle screw it on and fill it up. Just need to be careful when approaching 50l on the bowser. MKII will have a better filler.
I switched to a uni filter air cleaner, better seal and I think better dust protection. Aussie product too.
Are the newer models as good or better than the older gens? My dad has a 1989 Toyota Hilux and I'm not sure which is better
For coffee I can recommend the senseo coffee pads, just trough the in the cup, pour boiling water on it and enjoy.
enjoy? Senseo is not coffee....
@@corhendriks1755 you right, the original senseo is everything but coffee :-D that's why I'm using the pads of other companies ; -)

Hello Ronny, awesome video! where can I buy the same snorkel?
Its a factory Toyota one, you can get it from Toyota
Pre Filter does not void warranty of the vechile
Snorkles are also good to hide wiring to the roofrack
Lol, love the coffee chemistry set. I myself prefer a jar of instant coffee and a jar of sugar.
Instant coffee is very bad for your liver
I'm suprised you did not mention anything about cooling - like an oil cooler / trans cooler / upgraded radiator. The reason why I say this is most people in 4WD's suffer from overheating, especially when off-roading or stuck in a rut.
very similar to the setup I used when I did your tag a long in 2018 in my Navara... works well... I found for the water tank gauge this is the best one, no sender unit that is not accurate.. Topargee Water Tank Gauge. Luxy looking good.. hope to see it on this years tag a long.. I will be there.. ;)
Thanks for the lead. I’ve been looking into tank gauges. Will add this one to the list.
@@Alan.livingston you're welcome, this one is good, because no need to drill holes for sender unit and you set the starting litres (you should know the size of your tank) and it counts down, very accurate.
Not really surprised by the weight, actually slightly surprised it wasn't more!
Hi Ron, have you consider adding automatic transmission cooler?
I have no idea if you can control this or not, but there are an insane amount of ads. Otherwise, I love the content.

Are you able to fill water and diesel in the tub tank with out spillage or over flow? How about the Diesel smell when you open the tub door after few hours of driving on a hot day.? Do you hear water and fuel sound from any of the newly fitted tank?
to lower your centre of gravity, a flat fuel/water tank, say 10" high with a catchment bowl in the bottom of each tank

Would live to see you do a similar series with a custom camper
if you were buying a second hand used car say with 150-200k on it would you still reccomend installing a catch can or would the later returns you gain in cleanlyness be lost due to how long it went without one?
Please make a video on Hilux vs Fortuner offroad test.
You should talk about the engineering requirements to make the luxy road legal and or increase the gdm.
It’s payload is a whopping 955kg. This would be a big task to exceed that.
I'm still within standard GVM and I have an increase of 180kg with suspension

I always get licensed mechanic / product reps to do all the mechanical fitouts, yes it costs more but I like to make sure that I'm covered by my car insurance just in case something goes wrong instead of me doing it and not being covered.
