In The Heat of the Night was another great role for him as a detective working a case in the south of US with the well known line " You can call me Mr Tibbs"
Yes, your initial interpretation is correct. The film is based on E.R. Braithwaite’s book. It deals with social and racial issues in an inner city school in the East End of London. Mark Thackeray (Sideney Poitier) is a teacher at that school. He took up teaching while waiting to hear about an engineering job. He was given a class of unruly kids. He develops these kids into better people as they enter the real world after graduation. During the school year he demanded they call him “Sir." At the end of the movie at the graduation dance, Babs (Lulu) sings him "To Sir With Love" and the class gives him a gift. So the song is about growing up and giving respect to those that help develop them.
Ironically, a decade earlier, Poitier played one of the problem students in the film Blackboard Jungle (which used Rock Around The Clock as its theme song), with Glenn Ford playing the teacher. Very similar story line to To Sir With Love (and Dangerous Minds).
You NEED to see this movie to understand this legendary song. You won't regret it. PLEASE do yourself a favour, and track it down and watch. One of my all time favourites...and an all time classic.
Why do the real work when you can get clicks for not even understanding it oneself. Movies should have been made about Poitier decades ago , but again, easier to screech and demand a black man play James Bond 🤷♀️
I loved that movie and anytime this song comes on the radio (it still does🎉!) I can still sing along and remember all the words - that is how memorable it is to me. Thanks for playing this 😊
Sidney Poitier was a magnificent actor. A giant in the industry. A man with real class and distinction. He was a humble man who never sought adoration. His name should ring through history because he was one of the greats during a time of racial upheaval in the 60s. His appeal was universal. He won an Oscar for Lillies in the Field in 1964.
@FixedVariable My Mom introduced me to that movie when I was a teen, as it was one of her favorite movies. I love that movie still today. That Spencer Tracy speech towards the end is legendary. Katherine Hepburn was amazing, too.
@@FixedVariable Yes, I love that film. It was Spencer Tracy's last film. He died shortly after. He and Katherine Hepburn were deeply in love with each other. Spencer was married to a woman who would not give him a divorce. So, when he had the speech at the end, he was sincerely expressing his undying love directly to Katherine (and to the world). It is one of the most beautiful scenes in film history. Just magical, when you know their history.

"To Sir, with Love" is a song written for the 1967 film of the same name. The film is a drama that follows an American teacher, Mark Thackeray (the Late Great Sidney Poitier), working in an East End London secondary school. The song is sung from the perspective of Thackeray's students (ie, one of them being Lulu), who have grown to respect and care for him over the course of the film. The lyrics express the students' gratitude and affection for their teacher, who has had a profound impact on their lives. The song became a major hit single for Lulu, who performed it for the film's soundtrack.
That's Sydney Poitier, one of the most iconic, award winning, celebrated actors ever!! He's originally from the Bahamas. You should watch the movie, 'To Sir With Love', you won't be disappointed.
This is a phenomenal film. Really worth a look see. This song always reminds me of the feelings you will feel when you watch the film. The movie is even better.
In the UK,we call our teachers Sir or Miss,so it is a young Lady "writing/singing" to Sir,with all her love. The film is truly one of the best, my Mum was mad over Sydney so it was a staple at home. What fine memories this all brings

Well, I got a little teary eyed at this. I loved that movie when I was a kid (and still do). This short video gave me the whole of it in a few minutes - lovely. Hope you’re able to make time to watch it.
It kind of made you tingle? Every single time I hear that song I get chills and goosebumps AND tear up. It definitely makes me tingle. So sweet and powerful without being corny. Thanks for a great reaction!
Lulu (the student with the short/pixie hair cut) is the singer. The movie is the same title as the song. Sidney Poitier is a phenomenal actor! Great movie...very moving.
It’s Sidney Poitier. This song always makes me cry at this point in the movie - good movie, too. My Dad loved Lulu’s music, too. He changed inner city kids into polished, ambitious young people. Yess, loved Dangerous Minds! Yes, Sidney Poitier is Oscar-winning. And yes, movie is of the same name :) Lulu is the short, pudgy, orange and bob-haired, girl. He was reluctant to work there, then he fell in love with helping the hard kids, and they fell for him. Beautiful story.
Sidney Poitier never made a bad movie b/c he made it worth watching: Lillies of the Field; A Patch of Blue; In the Heat of the Night; They Call Me Mr. Tibbs..the list goes on. He was handsome and charming and the camera loved him and so did the world. Lulu is a talented actress and singer who was married to Maurice Gibb of the BeeGees. Thanks for all the memories this one brings.
I LOVE Lulu (Real name Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie). She's still around and still performing, in fact she's on tour this year celebrating 60 years in the music business. She's 75, but looks like she's in her early fifties, still has the same great voice, same energy, and just as beautiful a soul as she ever was.
The band backing Lulu on this song was called the Mindbenders. They had a hit in the 60s called "Groovy Kind of Love", which was covered later by Phil Collins.
He was an engineer, but took the job as a teacher temporarily until he could get the engineers job. At the end, he gets the jib offers, but rips it up to stay a teacher. You should watch the movie. It was outstanding.
Lulu was married to Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees when they were both young. They divorced in 1969 when they were very young. They divorced in 1974 and remained friends.
Sidney Poitier played the part of Braithwaite's true story of his work at a school in London. Very moving. Lulu was one of the students who also could sing! Beautiful film!! ❤
The first time when I saw Sydney Porter on screen I was a blonde curly haired, blue eyed little girl and I feel in love. I'm now 71, still love him, and still cry over his loss. His movies spoke of how we should be as people...If you're not familiar with his movies you owe it to yourself and your children to watch them.
To Sir With Love starring the late great Sidney Poitier. He became the first black actor to win the Oscar for best actor for 1963 Lilies of the Field. But it was his role as teacher Mark Thackeray that probably what he is best known for. Rest in peace Sir.
Best Known as Virgil Tibbs in _"Heat of the Night"_ movie that was later turned into a tv series in 90s with Howard Rollins as Tibbs. The 2 other "color barrier" roles for Portier were _Guess Who's Coming to Dinner_ & _Slinder Thread_ (about a 911 operator keeping a dying woman on phone long enough that she is found by police & saved).
In English schools then, the teacher was referred to as "Sir". This is a thank you from the students, appreciating him after first giving him a hard time.
E. R. Braithwaite was a Guyanese-born British American novelist, writer, teacher and diplomat best known for his stories of social conditions and racial discrimination against black people. He was the author of the 1959 autobiographical novel To Sir, With Love, the man was also a hero who volunteered During World War II he joined the Royal Air Force as a pilot. He later described this experience into as one where he had felt no discrimination based on his skin color nor ethnicity.
Lulu (born Marie Lawrie on 3 November 1948) is a Scottish singer, songwriter, actress, and television personality. By age 16, Marie Lawie was riding high in the UK charts as "Lulu and the Luvvers" - a name that came from Marie’s manager who referred to her as “a real lulu of a kid” - with a raucous cover of the Isley Brothers‘ classic rave-up, Shout. Her powerful voice makes this version quite impressive, especially given her age at the time! In the spring of ’67 Lulu took Neil Diamond’s "The Boat That I Row" into the British Top 10. Her US label released it as well, with "To Sir With Love," from the Sidney Poitier movie of the same name, on the flip side. Lulu’s performance on record and on screen powered it to number 1. Oddly, Sir, the recording, was not released in England.
"To Sir With Love" was a great movie from back in the 1960s. Sidney Poitier, a great actor with a decades-long acting career, played a teacher who they all called "Sir". Lulu was an actress who also sang the theme song. In real life, Lulu (the girl with the short red hair) was once married to one of the BeeGees brothers (Maurice, I think). I like this song as much today as when it was new.
One of the top movies in my must watch list. Lulu was wonderful and the friendship she had with Maurice Gibb lasted after their divorce until his Death, RIP.
@@ronsmacI was just getting ready to post that. She won hers in 1940, I googled to get the exact date. Clark Gable was upset that she wasn’t allowed to sit with all the actors. They were good friends in real life.
During the 1960s, Lulu achieved another five top-ten hits in the United Kingdom, including "Boom Bang-a-Bang", which won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1969. Just weeks before her 1969 Eurovision appearance, Lulu had married Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees. Maurice's older brother Barry was opposed to their marriage as he believed them to be too young. Their honeymoon in Mexico had to be postponed because of Lulu's Eurovision commitment. Their careers and his heavy drinking forced them apart and they divorced in 1973, but remained on good terms.
I personally think this is one of the greatest songs in one of the greatest movies of all time. Lulu is a legend. Sydney Poitier is a legend. If anyone reads this and hasn't seen To Sir With Love, please put it on your bucket list.
The fact it is filmed in England gives this film true grit and more realism than most US films. No one generally does real drama better than the Brits. Great film. Must check out more of Lulu. One of the best British R & B/soul voices from the UK. Was married to Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees for some years. Listen to her hit, Oh Me Oh My, really shows her voice. Yes a good teacher is a gift. I had one on in primary school for 3 years straight. I still think of her and how she influenced me, to this day
Sidney Poitier was the first black actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor. You will not find a bad Sidney Poitier movie, but more importantly you will find a lot of great Sidney Poitier movies.
"Lulu" is the one with the short hair and was a very successful singer in her own right at that time, doing a first-time cameo in a movie - not the main female lead but the biggest star in the real world of celebrity at the time. "To Sir, with Love" was a huge hit for her already successful career but the film that it was connected with, of the same name, was SO SO SO powerful in many ways. It is a British production, btw . I would suggest you watch it, it is very moving, And yes, as has probably been mentioned already, that is the great Sidney Poitier.
I have a huge amount of admiration and respect for Mr. Sydney Poitier. An amazing human being, who understood the human condition and made choices accordingly. FYI: Lulu was the short haired red head. I, also, love this song. It reminds me of a teacher I had that took extra time with me. Upon her recent passing, I played this song and now will always connect it to her and her generosity. WATCH THE MOVIE! To Sir With Love. Luv that you did a reaction to this. This was so much more than a song to that generation.
@4:15, Lulu (Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie) is the one with shorter red hair and a purple jumper (top). Wee Scottish lass who had a great set of pipes. Great job as usual. Love what you do. Thanks!
I love Lulu!! Another of her famous songs is "Oh Me, Oh My, (I'm A Fool For You Baby)". My brother is a high school science teacher. When he left his school his students petitioned to get him back. It brought him to tears. He now teaches at a tough Charter school and his "hardcore" students love him. ❤When you can turn students around like Sidney Poitier does in the movie, you're pretty special. ❤
Great movie. To Sir With Love. The girl with the short red hair in the class was Lulu the singer. This was the original of the teacher takes over a class of underachieving hoodlums etc and turns them around. This is a really worthwhile movie to watch. This particular school is in England. The song was a huge hit on it's own as well as being the theme song for the movie of the same name.
Sidney Poitier, the epitome of elegance. The film is called To Sir with Love and is about a black American teacher moving to teach at a school in a run down area of London. Lulu was born in Glasgow, Scotland and had a huge hit "Shout" before this, recorded when she was 14, there black and white films of her performing Shout in the early 60's. To Sir with Love was her second hit. She is in the film as the little round faced girl with short red hair doing her make up with the big white earrings and necklace. Sidney was the first black man to win an Oscar.
"To Sir with Love"....one of my all-time favorite songs and movie with the late, great Oscar winning actor, Sidney Poitier. Legendary singer Lulu, also a student in the movie (the one with the short hair) sings this to him at the school towards the end of the movie. Lulu later married Maurice Gibb from the Bee Gees (the twin with the hat and beard). A couple of those students became big stars also. I could watch this movie and listen to the song a million times and get teary every single time.... thank u for this 🔥🔥🔥
One of my all time favorite movies!!!! I love this movie and she was married to one of my favorite artists of all time Maurice Gibb of The Bee Gees!!!!
Lulu was, also, one of the actresses in the film. She had short strawberry blond hair, and was wearing a purple blouse in the bus scene. The film is about a black teacher who is thrust into a school that services a lower class neighborhood, with disengaged students in their final year of secondary education (would be High School seniors, if in America).
I innocently crushed on Sydney Poitier. This movie was an awakening for me- the words explain a young girl’s tenderness perfectly. To Sir With Love is worth the watch.
Sydney Poitier in To Sir with Love - GREAT movie and Lulu singing is Amazing! I’ve loved this song my whole life❤ my 15 year old watched this with me and he loved it.
I’d forgotten this movie & Lulu’s song. “Message” movies were usually more subliminal back then , but in the context of the 60s and civil rights era it was a lovely story. Pottier was magnificent.
Yes this is like dangerous minds but like in the 1960s or 70s I forgot what time when the movie came out Sir with Love I would have to go look it up yes same thing same type of vibe and you got it right❤❤❤❤❤
This bring back so many memories. Watch the movie it’s awesome. Lulu was big in the UK and Australia in that time of the 60’s it’s what my parents generation . His name is Sidney Poitier.
Lulu is the girl in the purple sweater in the still shot during your mid-song break. She had a proper career as a pop singer in the UK. This was her acting debut. And an oscar-snub that year. This was the #1 pop single for the year 1967 in the US.
It’s a testament to the positive effect a teacher can have on students. Consider when the movie is set - a black man leading students in the 1960’s. Powerful!
The actor is Sidney Poitier, the first African American motion picture actor to win an Academy Award for best Actor in a Leading Role. Starred in the landmark film "Look Who's Coming to Dinner," and many more films. One of the most decorated actors in movie history. "To Sir With Love" was the movie here (and the title of the song, which shot to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and became one of the top five songs of 1967). I hadn't heard this song in a while when I stumbled on to this video and it gave me goosebumps. This came out right when I was about the same age, give or take a year or two, of these high schoolers we see in the video. 1967 was also the year my mom died. So I have bittersweet memories attached to everything that connects me to that year.
Lulu was a Scottish singer popular in the 1960s. To Sir with Love starred Sydney Poitier, one of the most talented actors of our time. It is set in London and addresses the integration of a black teacher in an all white school. It is based on the life experiences of E.R. Braithwaite, he was one of the books writers.

What a great great movie… The up-and-coming Sidney Poitier at the time… This song set the tone for the movie, Lulu knocked it out of the park👏
Sidney Poitier played the part of Braithwaite's true story of his work at a school in London. Very moving. Lulu was one of the students who also could sing! Beautiful film!! ❤
One of my FAVORITE all time songs!!! And from a GREAT movie!
I fell in love with him after I watched a patch of blue
It’s a great movie. Worth you time to watch it. Song brings tears every time I hear it just remembering the ending.
To Sir With Love is an epic movie! Please watch it, we all did, more than once.
Me too 😭
LULU is still performing .She was a mould breaker in the sixties .The film is a classic with one of the best black actors as the lead .
Omg, this song is so beautiful haven't heard this in decades!!!!! Lulus voice was so fabulous.
Watch the movie it’s incredible! Notice the title is “To Sir, With Love!” The comma after Sir is very deliberate
Fantastic song, fantastic movie and one of the greatest actors of his time. Great story and such a memorable song. Lulu nailed it!
That's Sidney Poitier ,1st black actor to win an oscar!
Male yes. Hattie McDaniel won an Oscar for her role in Gone With the wind in 1939.
@@ronsmacI was just getting ready to post that. She won hers in 1940, I googled to get the exact date. Clark Gable was upset that she wasn’t allowed to sit with all the actors. They were good friends in real life.
Can't express how much I love this movie, and music!
Lulu, (the singer) also acted in the movie - she is the ginger haired girl in the purple blouse
@@skipper409 oh I'm aware. To Sir With Love has been on of my favorite movies since I was a kid in the 70s. I've seen it probably 40 times.
This was a great movie and nobody could have played it better than Sidney Poitier.
Lillies of The Field. My favorite. I can watch it over and over.
Agree!
Loved Lillies of the field.
Also Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. Movies and issues of my time as a young adult.
This is a wonderful movie
I never ever get tired of watching this movie ♥♥♥
Fabulous movie. One of my favorites.
I saw this in the theater when it came out in 1967, I was 7. Very memorable. Got to see it BP!
One of my all time fave movies. It’s powerful and worth watching
One of the best movies you will ever watch - the movie and theme song is To SIr With Love.
He changed their lives.
Love this song, this movie and Sidney Poitier!
The movie is to sir with love. It's awesome 👌 You really need to see it!!!!!
Great reaction. Love the movie and well worth checking out. This song always brings me to tears.
Such a good movie..one of my favs
I think this was probably my grandmother's (Greatest Generation, born just over 100 years ago) favorite movie that wasn't in black and white.
@4:15, Lulu (Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie) is the one with shorter red hair and a purple jumper (top). Wee Scottish lass who had a great set of pipes. Great job as usual. Love what you do. Thanks!
I haven’t seen the movie in years, but I’m sitting here crying through this song. Beautiful movie.
Sidney Poitier … “ call me Mister Tibbs “ one of the most respected actors and people ever … he is missed …
Yes! "Where I come from, they call me MISTER Tibbs."
@@jannibal9273nice job .. remembering the exact quote was hard .. taxing my memory … lol !
I think Blackboard Jungle came out first, but To Sir With Love is definitely one of the earliest in the genre.
@@oldmovieman7550 Yeah, pretty sure it did, but I thought that might be going back too far for him lol. Thanks for the fact check though. Be well!
One of the best movies. Watch it sometime. The teacher is played by Sidney Poitier is one of the best actors of my generation
Of any generation!
Love it, I haven't heard this song for so long!!
Lulu is still an active performer.
I could watch this movie and listen to the song a million times and get teary every single time.... thank u for this 🔥🔥🔥
Sidney Poitier. The movie and the song, of the same name are fantastic!
One of my all time favorite movies!!!! I love this movie and she was married to one of my favorite artists of all time Maurice Gibb of The Bee Gees!!!!
The movie is incredible!
I loved this show! I was very young when this show came out! I was actually 10, I looked it up ! lol
It was one of my fav movies of all time. Starting one of my fav actors...Sydney Poitier
Sydney Poitier in To Sir with Love - GREAT movie and Lulu singing is Amazing! I’ve loved this song my whole life❤ my 15 year old watched this with me and he loved it.
we went to see this and a great story. Sideney was always a actor who played to the writing.
Made me tear up. Beautiful song.
This song still gets to me. Every time.
I’d forgotten this movie & Lulu’s song. “Message” movies were usually more subliminal back then , but in the context of the 60s and civil rights era it was a lovely story. Pottier was magnificent.
"Lillies of the Field" is pure greatness.
You should also watch Lulu sing this live too ❤️
It’s a testament to the positive effect a teacher can have on students. Consider when the movie is set - a black man leading students in the 1960’s. Powerful!
Great movie and great song
