    Super cheap but a great mod is LED interior lights. The very first I did is: full inspection and service, timing belt/water pump service, additional transmission cooler, tinting, dual arb air on board compressor. After that all you listed and after that regear with lockers, rear bumper etc.

    I like your video. Very good advice. As a 50 year LC driver, the switch to the gx470 took a wee bit of getting used to.It's so not an 80 but with that said, I am hooked on the GX. I am currently designing and fabricating my back platform from back to the front seats. Next on my list is the suspension. Then sliders. So it all depends as you said so well, what ones need and use is. Will look forward to more videos and congrats on your new child. Cherish these moments, they pass to damn quickly.

    I think this is a great list. I have a stock 470 right now and I struggle trying to think of best practical things first 😅 the sleeping platform is definitely a great first thing. My heart wants to go straight to front and rear bumpers but I need to actually use my car offroad a lot more before I can justify that. This list is a really good order, thank you!

    THANKS-- GREAT VIDEO... brought up some VERY good points to consider... I'm getting one SOON.. and want to be ready.. There is a place in San Diego, CA that makes the GX 470 out of the BEST they can find- already done.. I am thinking of getting one there- they do the waterpump/timeing belt, brakes, lift, wheels, tires, cv joints/boots, etc. ALREADY done. AND they send videos of the undercarriage to show NO RUST. etc... so I'll probably buy one of those- and then continue to do more- like I want an extra gas tank, hitch mounted rear tire carrier, etc... ANYWAY- I have more info on how to start now thanks to YOUR great video.. KEEP up the good work.

    I like the content, just found your channel and subbed. I'm researching the GX 470 vs 460 right now with a potential purchase in the next 6 months, so this is perfect. My only suggestion is that you consider changing the channel name before you get too big and Lexus sends YT a DCMA and you get removed with no recourse. I'd hate to see you start to hit critical mass and lose everything you've built.

      I love 460s as well! Some 470s are going for such high prices that it would just make more sense to just go with an early 460.
      I appreciate your concern. I feel like, as an entertainment channel that’s not just called “Lexus” should be safe. I can’t imagine Jeep going after someone for naming their channel “Jeep Overland Tours” or something. Is that wishful thinking on my part? Lol

    Love your vids, I just picked up a 2007 museum piece with 29K on the clock. The truck needs tires badly, should I just go with those Bridgestones ATs on stock everything else as I explore? Or should I lift it and get bigger tires now? I’m just a noob to all this, prob do some basic camping off road here and there. What size tires would be best? Thanks!

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  9 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for watching! Sounds like a super cool truck. I think stock is great! I love my wife’s stock GX. If you’re looking to do some mild off roading, some nice load range C A/T tires at 32” inches in diameter or less should be a nice upgrade without too many compromises along with a nice suspension kit. If you’re looking to go off road right now, I’d just get the lift and upgraded tires done at once instead of double-spending on tires by getting replacement stock ones until you’re ready to upgrade. I did a video recently on building the ultimate Lexus gx470 off-road/overland rig for under 20k where I talk about tires (part 1)

  • @devinhannan8620
    @devinhannan8620 3 роки тому +4

    Thanks for the vids. I have kept my gx fairly stock aside from 2.5 in lift followed by 285/70/17 BF K02's - gx standards in 2021 lol. I was "forced" to ultimately add TRD pro wheels for offset due to a rubbing I could never solve at full lock somewhere against the frame (fender lines were moved so I know I was good there). the TRD's solved it, but I also low key liked the stock wheel look and have considered bringing them back... so all that to ask, did you experience any "frame" rubbing with the 255/80/17 setup on the stock wheels?

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  3 роки тому

      Thanks for watching!
      I sure did experience rubbing. Especially when I added 1.25” spacers. This was solved completely when I asked my alignment guy to push caster max positive (I think almost 4 degrees?). It essentially pushes the wheel forward in the wheel well, away from the body mount. It also has the added benefit of having a more powerful tendency to return to center after turning and tracking straighter on the highway. This requires the use of aftermarket upper control arms though so keep that in mind if you don’t have them already. Also, I did this after the steel bumper, so if you still have the stock one, you may need to do a bit more cutting to bring the tire forward

    • @devinhannan8620
      @devinhannan8620 3 роки тому

      @@lexus_offroad_adventures Thank you for that articulate response. interesting about the spacers, I almost went that route too. im in the northeast now so I feel like ill regret cutting of the bumper/fender liner within a year or two. • @lexus_offroad_adventures

      Good points. I think that with the GX470 specifically, since it benefits from Toyota’s incredible ATRAC system which can use the opposite wheel brakes to help send power to the tire with traction, lockers can realistically wait until these more fundamental mods have been completed.
      As for comms, I think it would be a great plan to have solid comms if you ever venture out more than around 50 miles away from civilization. I’m considering the type of setup I should go with in the future actually. Do you think high-power radio (CB, HAM,etc.), or iridium satellite-based communication is better?

You can grab a cheap Baofeng from amazon to handle basic comms and then upgrade to a full car setup, like a Midlands or other brand if it works out. CB is not that popular unless your entire group is using it already. A lift does not “enable” you to run larger tires. A lift simply changes the ride height of the vehicle. If you are looking for tire clearance, you have to understand that your range of motion is going to stay the same, and be will be articulating an oversized tires in your wheel well and inevitably will make a contact somewhere. The larger you upgrade your tire size and/or decrease offset, the more you will need to clearance.

    • @lexus_offroad_adventures
      @lexus_offroad_adventures  Рік тому +1

      Good points, but I was more speaking in layman’s terms for this video. A lift is a good first step if you want to run larger tires but it definitely isn’t the *only* thing needed to do so. I currently have 35” tires and no sway bars (my rear broke, otherwise I’d run it with no front) so I definitely know what it takes. I disagree slightly that range of motion stays the same as OE, because most people factor in a more aggressive alignment coupled with aftermarket UCAs. We can change the alignment (specifically caster) to increase body mount clearance as long as you have upgraded UCAs which can accommodate the more aggressive alignment, and a cut OE bumper or high clearance aftermarket one to eliminate rubbing in front of the tire. So our range of motion may be the same in terms of suspension travel length (although any good lift system has slight down travel extension advantage vs OE, up to 30mm with IronMan for example) but we can move the range of motion forward with a good front alignment. Overall, this video just covers the basics of where people should start and I may do a more in-depth video for nerds down the line.
      I highly recommend people just watch this series by Tinkerer’s Adventure though. He does a great job explaining everything: ua-cam.com/video/l1tTelhdEiM/v-deo.html

    • @taliesinangling3564
      @taliesinangling3564 Рік тому

      @@lexus_offroad_adventures Best to get rid of the idea that “getting a lift will allow you to run larger tires,” especially for people new to the community. It is a common misconception. At the end of the day you’re trying to fit a tire in a space. And in order to do that, you can increase caster with aftermarket upper control, arms and using the eccentric bolts in the lower control arms to move the tire away from the body mount, and you can cut plastic and relocate mounting for the wheel well plastic. If you lift your Toyota IFS, 2.5” and put larger tires on, when you’re using your vehicle it’s going to compress 2.5 inches at some point and you’ll have to plan for clearance when it is compressed, and using its range of motion. At the end of the day lift does not create clearance it changes ride height and, depending on if your shocks are extended travel or not, may increase down travel by a bit. Tinkers adventure is definitely a good resource. Probably the best Toyota content and information on youtube.
      I just want to clear that misconception because it can be confusing for people who are new.

    I hate it when people apologize for not posting a video every day, like just post a video and I'll watch it if I feel like it.

    Do you think these mods can be had under 4 grand ?

      With today’s raw material costs it would be tough. You can check out my build budget breakdown video to get an idea of the costs associated with some of these mods: ua-cam.com/video/aYmdBrA8n6g/v-deo.html
      Bedsides my front bumper setup, I tried to keep everything affordable.

      Yes I did! Fixed it. I did a horrible wire connection at first but it was my first try.

    First mod needs to be timing belt kit and changing every fluid in it

      Yeah I don’t consider the required maintenance to be a modification, but it’s definitely a great idea to keep up with that stuff!
