Robbie Krieger, the man who wrote "Light My Fire". If he did nothing else in his life, that classic alone should make him a musical legend, but so many great songs that came from him, and yet he remains one of the most soft spoken and humble rock guitarists I've ever seen. Thank you Robbie, your playing inspired and launched so many of us on our own musical journeys.

I thought Jim and Robbie both wrote lyrics for "Light My Fire", no?

    • @davejohnson-yi2rk
      @davejohnson-yi2rk 4 роки тому +4

@@spookiesvideogames2697 While both Jim and Robbie wrote songs together, with Robbie more often supplying the music and Jim the lyrics, surprisingly, many of the songs Robbie wrote solo, sound on first reflection of the lyrics, like "Morrison-type-songs".
But Robbie apparently had such a good ear, that he was quickly able to adapt to the "Morrison style" or "Doors Style" and subject matter. With The Soft Parade, the writing credits are clearly displayed for the first time, and would be for their remaining albums, so it's interesting to see how many "Jim Sounding Lyrics" are actually penned by Robbie:
Robbie is now generally considered to be the original creator of "Light My Fire" as detailed in Danny Sugarman's "No One Here Gets Out Alive" book of the Doors. And while the self effacing Robbie was loathe to take sole credit for it, it was indeed he who came in with the basic chords and lyrics after the full Doors first meeting, the only one of the four who actually wrote anything over that fateful first meeting weekend.
Robbie's original song was then modified. His rhythm (played originally more as a folk song) was given a faster, stronger beat and the song went from a leisurely to the now much more forceful beat we recognize it for.
Uncredited was producer Paul Rothchild's important changes in the mid part and solo section, and John was the one who, after that initial blast of the snare drum, gave it what would be something of a Latin beat throughout, unusual at the time, but it worked.
Ray was responsible for giving it that classical and now classic organ opening flourish after the snare hit which he credits somewhere to a classical song which I frankly forget the name of.
It was Jim who contributed the lyrics "No time to wallow in the mire, try now we can only lose, and our love become a funeral pyre" - which Robbie is heard recalling in one of his interviews that he was initially hesitant about, saying , "Jim, why does everything you write have to be about doom and gloom?" - but with the benefit of the hindsight of time, he said he now realizes worked perfectly.
Robbie did write many very Morrison sounding songs, here's a list of some songs people (like me!) just assume Jim wrote, and sound like definite "Morrison" songs because of the lyrics, but which Robbie actually wrote on his own: "Love Her Madly", "Peace Frog", "Ship of Fools", "Queen of the Highway". "Wishful Sinful", "Runnin' Blue" , and the hard driving "Roadhouse Blues" All of which have Jim sounding lyrics.
Hope this helps to clarify things. - DJ

It's weird watching "someone" play the song on youtube in their house, just to a boombox version or whatever and kind of chatting with everyone...and then realize it's the guy who created the part....lol
I got into the Doors around 1983 when I picked up a cassette (yup...I'm old) of "The Doors - 13"......that started me down a long path with them....I ended up with all of their albums and they were MY band throughout high school and college.......in fact, in high school, I so badly wanted to play like Ray Manzarek....so I begged my my parents for a keyboard (which would have been a Korg Poly 800 at the time), and Christmas morning, I saw the large box and excitedly opened it....and found an electric guitar.......so, I had to switch hero's and suddenly I was trying to learn every Doors song I could :-)
Everyone always talks about Jim.....and, of course, I idolized Jim Morrison.....but...in truth, I always had more respect for Ray/Robby/John, because as I learned just how "unstable" performances could be with Jim......I realized it took a pretty tight crew to be able to hold things together while he was sometimes coming apart....lol.

I used to fall asleep to the Doors music. So many favorites...This one is outstanding. I am a guitar player and Robby is one of my favorites. I had a roommate when I was in my early 20's. Unreal drummer and his bands were incredible...played with many pro's and won't bore you with the details. Anyhow, drunken I used to love pounding on his drum kit, (everyone would scream at me to knock it off). Their guitar player started with this riff at a house party...I jumped off the drums and started singing in my best Morrison voice. The next 2 hours it was me and the guitar player doing Doors tunes. I thought it was just a goof, but the musicians there thought the two of us were incredible, (I am not a singer BTW). I love the Doors and I love Robbie...

I had the incredibly chance privilege of getting guitar lessons the 80’s from Robby’s bass player at the time, Rick Moors, at JB Wilson’s guitar shop in Woodland Hills, CA.
I would ask Rick, how to play LA Woman, or Light My Fire, or whatever, and he ask Robbie. The next week, Rick would show me what Robby shared with him.
I was so blessed by Rick and Robby. It is almost unfathomable to me that I was connected to these two dear and patient souls, taking time to share Robby’s and The Doors’ music with a greasy, curious 17 year-old me. Even to this day, blows my mind.
Thank you Robby and Rick, for adding that magic to my life!

This is one of the best things that happened during this quarantine, this series is so cozy and comfortable to watch. I remember dressing myself as Robby for a presentation about blues and rock music during middle school and I had to play the harmonica because I had just started to learn the guitar, wish I could've rocked Moonlight Drive at the time haha. Thank you for everything Rob, really. Love you and The Doors.

The fluttering noise you hear is Ray playing organ with vibrato. The moaning guitar sound you hear is Robbie playing with a slide and using volume swells with a DeArmond Volume pedal - the same type of pedal as a wah wah except the sweep goes from no volume to max volume instead of bass to treble. You can also do volume swells by using your guitar volume knob, but Robbie used a volume pedal - you can also hear him using it at the beginning of the song with a fuzztone when Robbie's guitar first comes crashing in. Another example is at the chaotic peak of The End where he rocks the volume pedal back and forth rapidly before finally pushing it all the way down to get max volume and produce some of the best amp feedback ever heard.

there is something eerie and melancholy about all of these Doors videos post-Jim - you can just sense how much each and every one of them misses him - and now Ray - and playing in the band and now that two of them have passed you sense John and Robbie know their time is nearing as well - its like time stood still for all of them since Jim died - you watch Robbie here and you just sense he is drifting back to those days and thoughts must be flashing through his head of how it was then - will be one hell of a gig once they all reunite - you can sense their loss so much its like part of them died and they are mourning like a dog that never leaves the grave of his owner - I think The Doors were one of the closest bands of all time ...

Never subscribed so fast. I was less interested in learning the song, than just listen to this guy talk about music, while he's making music. Just to be a fly on the wall or get a little piece of whats going on in his head, and how he feels about the music. I'm gushing a bit, but man... this music was the music that GOT me into music.
