Total natural angling genius! Your sense of humour, karma, mindfulness and sarcasm makes watching so much more addictive. My rig building, tactics and especially bait pumping (loll) have immensely improved under your counsel. You also make me proud of our Irish Muse and Master of Fishcraft. You're that grounded Dude that we would all love to fish alongside!!! Cant thank you enough Brother
Hi Philip, it's comments like yours that make it all worth it. I have been on the beach since I was just 15 years old, my imagination running wild with stories of tope and Conger that will eat your legs off. You know how it goes, maybe there is some truth to it after all. Thanks Brother, see you on the beach 👍😁👌
Boy...you kids on that side of the pond use a lot of "Bling" on your lines. Those rigs would work here in Virginia but never where I grew up. Way to many snags, rocks, misc. "eat your gear" features on the bottom. But....I get a kick out of watching your vids One of these days I'll try fishing a few of those rigs down here. You keep making the vids...I'll keep watching them. Thanx for the post
Hi RW, many rigs we have over here. But this rig is for a sandy bottom, I have not been fishing sangs for a long time. And have rigs for that too, you will see to hem wehen the ground gets ruff. Thanks Brother 👍😁
Oh, the clip part is what I didn't understand at first.... so the point of your modification is just to make the bait line even longer and get it further away from the weight, right? that is very interesting... I feel if I tried that somehow all the lines would twist, snarl and snag up on the cast and I'd be kniving. Maybe you have to cast it carefully as well? And perhaps the heavy mono is more stiff and does not twist up, I usually am using very light tackle and line. Very well explained, thank you.
Actually, if you give the line too much slack! It will tangle when it hits the sea floor. The trick is to give it just enough, so there is space for the bait. Thanks brother 😁👌
Gave this rig a go a couple of weeks ago, bass fishing over a bit of local mixed ground. The full strength 70lb rig length to an octopus style hook with a dingle dangle on it, a 15lb lead line (i use 0.38mm 24lb Asso mono mainline) really helped when getting the lead snagged a couple of times. Great rig with an inbuilt rotten-bottom, pulled for a break losing only the lead. What was mostly impressive though was the fact it flew so straight and stable through the air with a mackerel head and guts bait on it hooked through the lips👍👌👍 1 bass at just over 4lb, a thornback at 7lb and few schoolies. I was well chuffed
@@Billyfishing_watch Gave the up and over rig a go, as i like to fish with baits close to the bottom, and use fixed up and over rigs with 3ft (ish) snoods quite a lot. But it was the South African style rig i used in the end, as the spot i fished is mixed ground with big thick mud ledges and can always lose a few rigs. Made them with 15lb lead link and use 24lb Asso mainline so that was the weak link. Both work brilliantly though, especially with chunkier baits.
Cheers again for the videos Billy. Heading up hame to the hebridis camping alone for a week. Gonna give a couple of the rigs you show a go, quite excited to try!
hay billy i think i got it.. again learning loads.. going to start using hairs and circles from both shore and boat, mainly from a conservation point of view, good luck with the 40lb cod and as always you shows make me smile
Thanks Tony, great to hear you get into the idea of using the hairs👍 just one thing, you don't need them on a boat if you're not casting. Maybe for up tideing, fish on Brother 👍😊👌
Perfect 👌 I was thinking of something like this to try and catch a Tope from the shore in my village where no one has, we used to get loads just offshore as kids so don't see why not. I didn't like the idea of standard paternoster type rig, rather have it straight and flat like up+over. I'll go hook to bite trace to a big ass swivel in place of ring, then snood👍
@@Billyfishing_watch I think so too, I'll make a scaled down prototype and test on rays because even half a joey won't stay on the clip for me with my standard u+o and I need at least that to stop the whiting horde violating my baits. Now I just need a tip to prevent the seals stealing all my mackerel off the hooks before I get them in, hooked around 20 macks this morning, landed 6.5 swearing at them with hand gestures had no effect, not even in Welsh 😡
Another great video Billy very informative. About the South African rig the only thing that I would change to make it a one true piece line would be by adding Carolina keepers, instead of the 2 knots above and below the pulley rig which makes it a weaker line. Carolina Keepers are plastic pieces with a slit cut through the middle which used to keep beads and swivels from sliding around. If you get a chance look them up. We here in the West coast of California use Dropper loops or Reverse Drooper Loops. Thanks again for sharing something interesting and new to me.
Hi Jorge, I think we are on the same page Brother. Because the knots are not in the rig boddy, but a stop knot tied around a ring body. Thanks for the info, I will check out the Carolina keepers. Fish on 👍😁👌
Love your videos Billy. In South Africa, the rule I was taught was the less, "jewelry" the cheaper and the better the rig. For anything that is possibly going to bite us off (like sharks), we would make the bottom part of that first rig with a 120lb or 150lb 7 strand coated wire. The wire and heavy mono sections are joined with two sets of figure 8 knots that are pulled up against each other. Again this makes the rig cheaper vs it all being from wire and improves free movement in the water.
What a lot of people do in South Africa, for the big sharks run wire all the way through and just use mono for the lead line. They call it an MFG, this stands for full metal jacket. Follow the link to this video. It's probably what you need! 49 strand wire is the best you can use, it's very easy to work with. But if you can't get that seven strand will do! Most people will use 200 lb wire, for the MFG.
Great to see this sorta content being shared /explained Bruva Billy, Lady luck smiled recently when I managed a Pb on a variet of this . Big bait over crab infested ground
@@Billyfishing_watch Was one of them spikey silver things, i think the whole Covid Confusion put her off buggering off to spawn with the rest of them 😄
hi Billy - these are really good, I've tied some of both for my next mission over to the West Coast of NZ's South Island after Snapper, as that's when we use big baits.
What Lbs mono are you using to tie wire to mono.. I have having the issue of 90lb afw 49 strand wire cutting through 100lbs Rovex 10x mono as I am tightening the knot. I have tried tying using the knot you have mentioned and back to back figure of 8 knots. I am wondering if that size mono is too light and low in diameter for 90-150lb wire.
Again just awesome conntent..South african fishing has changed my angling from low mount fixed spool the dingle dangles to using circular hooks..They are are quite far ahead of other continents when it comes to surfcasting with their inovations..do you mainly use the up and over rig and do you also always use the snell for joining hook length to circular hooks even wire for Toope an dshark?? Thanks for all your replies..All this content has improved my sea angling!
Yes, I smell all the hook on. In my playlist you will find everything you need from tying wire to 400 and pound mono . There are even new videos for how to fish a poly rig South African style. Thanks Brother 😁👌
I've seen the circle hooks tied on to a loop so that they are free to move . Your thoughts please Billy. BTW. Great vid ,clear as a bell ,keep em coming.
Hi Lee, not sure about the loop technique. The only question is, does it catch fish!! So if it works it works. And one is for sure, this method really works. Fish on 👍😁
Love your energy in all your vids I’ve been binge watching them all lately and I’m glad I’ve come across your channel, if you don’t mind me asking what is your preferred way of attaching this rig to your braided mainline? Do you just use figure of eight knot onto the swivel or would you rather have it run onto mono tied onto mainline. Sorry for the long question tho😭, cya on the beach billy!!
Hi Luke. I always put a swivel at the top of the rig, then a quick link with the figure of eight knot onto the leader. Just so I can change the rig easily. Thanks Brother 😁👌
Hi Dave, I don't know what a snubber is. But a Dingle dangle is not elastic, it's just so you can clip down an over sized bait. And fish the bait below a circle hook. Thanks Brother, fish on 👍😁
