    When I was a kid I grew up poor and I was resentful. By the age of 10 I realised that resentment was just an awful emotion and an approach to life that was only going to harm me.
    Now people think that resentment should be at the heart of both their existence and is the only solution they seem to have.
    I learnt that this is not true by the age of 10.

      Couple of my favorites from the 90's/00's: My Brother and Me, My Wife and Kids, Wayans Bros, Martin, Smart Guy, Kenan and Kel.
      Bonus tangent/rant:
      What's interesting is how most of the white people depicted in these shows are typically very goofy/weak/beta, and usually get made fun of in the show for attempting to fit in to that culture. But not once did that upset me or offend me as a white person, it was funny. People tend to make fun of what they don't understand and it's okay to laugh at that, make light of the differences and celebrate them, instead of being upset by it.

When I ended up needing one, I laughed a little and pointed it out to her and explained the reason for them. She was clueless and I had to explain some deeper lore about the whole culture thing going on, because she had no idea it went that (skin) deep.

    The claim is that the arrest rates are higher for blacks but Id like to see the interactions with the officers on both sides.

    • @Oblithian
      @Oblithian 2 місяці тому

      What she argues here is for higher incarceration rates, which may be misrepresented (if she intended it to mean more likely to be imprisoned based on their skin colour. As I gathered).
      Because it is probably true that if the arrest rate is higher so is the number of imprisonments. However, this IS distinct from the rate at which criminals found guilty of the same crime are imprisoned (and or sentence length). If judges are racist, that's not cool and needs to be resolved. But based on her other nonsense... She is just misconstruing yet more information.

    • @chlupl
      @chlupl 2 місяці тому +2

      I haven't found a study that goes really deep into the topic, but longer incarceration lengths is true. It has been pointed out, though, that those studies haven't taken into account repeat offender comparisons. In most cases, first time offenders will get lighter sentences then multiple time offenders, and, from my understanding of the argument, is that there is a higher rate of black repeat offenders.
      Incarceration rates are higher also, but so is crime rate, so it doesn't, in itself, show racism in the system.
      The reality is that most of these states and arguments are based on very limited data that doesn't reflect the many variables that make up reality.
      My thoughts.. rather than continuously throwing out misleading numbers and creating division, perhaps we can start to actually look at problems that affect the culture that has created the current reality. Learning actual history and civics, personal responsibility, logic and rhetoric (including how to see when you are being propagandized rather than informed), and the importance of making good choices early in life.

    Some things to consider about the statistics that she cited.. just as she is giving 1 single statistic and equating it to racism, however, she is leaving out many stats and factors.. as an example, she gave a statistic about white vs black dispensary owners, and it was just ownership.. but there is a lot of important information and data that she left out.. like, how many people of each race made applications for a permit or license to own and operate a dispensary? What are the requirements? What things disqualify you? How much does it cost to apply, and whats the cost when approved? How many people of each race opted out of the application process, or didn't follow up with payment for any reason? How many of each race were disqualified from the process? How many were approved? How many were approved, but couldn't afford the fee for the actual permit?
    All of these questions are vital to find answers to, before concluding and type of bias, prejudice, or bigotry..

    My limited experience in a few states working as an educator/ administrator in prison system. Most people on drug charges are originally picked up on a host of other charges. Everything else is dropped except for the drug charge. An example. When meth problem hit in 2008 or so you had a lot of out of work people getting high shooting old cars and blowing up mailboxes in the mountains. Cops are called disturbing peace, dv, etc. at the end of the day dude is only sentenced on meth charge cause that’s where there’s actual treatment available in the prison system and more resources in the community for a Dx’d d/a disorder.

    The problem is that there are people who have decided to make things like discrimination their life's work. That they have to find ways to accuse others of some form of bigotry, while trying to keep their own from being noticed by the public. Yet as the saying goes, those who live by the sword, shall perish by the sword. These folks well end up having to pay eventually, for all of the lives they have destroyed, for their own benefit.

Men have been in the workforce a lot longer and have a higher rate of employment today so there are people like the billionaires that are included in this and throw off the scale. If you take people doing the same job the difference would be negligible for most jobs.

    I still don't understand why folks are surprised that there's so much Anglo-European representation in America. Is it really that shocking for a country that was founded by predominantly Anglo Europeans? Is anyone shocked when they go to India and there are predominantly Indian faces on the currency or that Bollywood is filled with predominantly Indian actors? Mexican money has predominant Hispanic people on it and Korean TV is brimming with Korean faces and yet no one is outraged or accused of privilege.
    I don't want to sound like I'm saying America is a "white" country, it's not, but it really shouldn't be a shock that the founding and still prevalent ethnic group is more visible. Going to Japan and expecting to see Nigerian representation on TV is an unrealistic expectation even though there are over 3000 Nigerians living there.

    I agree with your biggest point-- all she did was insinuate that Black people are victims through the points she made. I grew up in a poor, mixed neighborhood and this was the sentiment from a majority of the adults that I encountered. Years later I worked in that neighborhood and the mentality hadn't changed. As a white person I also experienced a lot of racism towards me from mostly Black women but several Black men. It seems to be a problem with single Mom's perpetuating the lies that you're a victim because of your skin color if you're Black. Two Black women told me to my face, on different occasions, that they demanded a Black server. My jaw dropped and I got the manager and can you believe both women actually got served. The first time it happened I had a good friend (a Black female) stick up for me and she went over there and gave her a piece of her mind. She told her she should be ashamed of herself because I'm a nice guy and I help everyone equally regardless of race. Someone else took care of her and just got her out quickly because she was rude but I was shocked that the manager didn't kick her out and say never come back. I've been called the N word on multiple occasions by groups of Black men when walking alone too. It's just so sad because it seems in this area of the east coast, that there is a lot of racism being taught from parents and schools and it seems like we're losing the progress we made in the last 40 years.

    Hailing a cab in NYC or other large cities is difficult for all of us. I've seen talk black men get a cab before I did. But I chalked it up to the black man was in a suit and looked rich, and I didn't, so of course the taxi driver picked him up. That is usually the case in most "racist" situations. It's not really racism, it's usually socio-economics at play here.

    These issues are so much more complex and the fact so many attribute it to race is why they never get fixed. Homeownership is a big one. If you take into account the areas that the majority of whites live in you'd find that they live in small rural towns where the cost of living and housing is sometimes half or less of that in the cities. A $250k house in a rural area would be more like $400-450k in the cities so instead of buying, a lot of people in the city can only afford to rent.

    Had several conversations about a decade ago related to race and loans. There's parts to this post, buckle in.
    A significant number of black people were hurt by the 2008 housing crash because they were approved for loans above their credit rating because the government was penalizing banks that didn't push through loans for certain income levels. White folks got caught in it too, but this was a percentage track situation on the defaulted loans.
    The people screaming at me about black people not getting loans a decade ago were also screaming about how they were disadvantaged in 2008 BECAUSE they got loans.
    I've had friends of multiple shades in multiple parts of the US and Canada get approved and shot down for loans for many things. It turned out to not be matter of color in both directions. It was credit and income related. 2008 showed me that anything approaching central control of any market has serious negative consequences, especially when 'help' lacking forethought is the goal.

Its 2024, and I live in australia and we have a lot of the same type of things here, where the black people have free schooling where the whites have to pay, to get onto social security all they need to do is to say they are black and dont have to look for work, if you are white and dont look for work you lose your benifits, and the list goes on.
