    I agree with you, too.
I used to interview students for the Air Force, I didn't even know their race from resumes. I had to interview them. I refused the white guy due to their DUI. Not based on crime, but on his response to the question, What did you learn? He said not to get caught. Heck No.

Well, now hopefully no one else will experience a similar situation, esp with the growing number of segregated commencements. One 2019 report-𝘴𝘰, 𝙥𝙧𝙚 𝘎𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘦 𝘍𝘭𝘰𝘺𝘥-stated that at least *125* colleges embraced division, exclusivity, and and intolerance by holding segregated graduation ceremonies. Unfortunately if you’re a “cis white” student you’ll just have to utilize that “white privilege” to attend the collective ceremony with all the other “special” students. Btw you’re not gonna believe this but Illinois held one for “MAPS”-apparently not the peԀ0 MAPS but Middle Eastern, Asian, Pacific Islander, and Southeast Asians. 𝘠𝘦𝘢𝘩! They’re sneaking it right in. It's all about background. Some people of any race don't have the experience to know what speaking and behaving professionally is. And some people will call it racism without looking at how unprofessional white people are treated because they don't see how unprofessional white people are treated. If they also have the same unprofessional behaviors, they may take it as a personal attack on their culture because they don't understand the reason for the expected professional behaviors.

When I took this class, at a different college, 15 years ago our textbook, that normally mentioned how there was discrimination everywhere, had a story where a minority student who'd recently completed their doctorate was flooded with job offers, despite ranking 19th out of their class of 25. Meanwhile, the white male student who'd ranked first in their class had gone to the exact same interviews and didn't receive a single job offer. The author of this true story, the minority student, went on to say that they felt guilty for this and questioned the motivation behind the accolades they received throughout their career.

Jojo is 100%. There has to be something else that was left out of the Study. Did they actually have the Applicants go to the Interview? Did they answer the Interview questions exactly the same? Were they wearing the exact same type of Clothes? Were they both Personable (Charismatic, Non-Argumentative, Thought before answering questions, etc....). Who ran the 'Study'?? Did they edit their Findings (i.e. threw out instances that went against their desired outcome)??
Something isn't right with that Study.

Attitude also plays a large part in getting a call back, if you have to pick between someone with a good go-getter attitude or someone with a miserable, 'I know you won't hire me so what is the point' attitude, which would you choose.

If they were sending resumes or applications to real employers, there may have simply been more qualified black applicants that didn't take part in the study. If they used volunteers to act as HR then there may be selection bias in the volunteers. It may be that HR is more selective with black applicants than with white ones because of affirmative action. If the study predates affirmative action, then it's no longer valid because that policy DOES influence hiring.

    • @rav04o2

I think I'm confused about this white privilege argument. How can something be called a privilege if it comes with the requirements of following rules and adhering to societal norms in everyday life? To me, it's sound more like "you get what you work for."
And why white? How about the Japanese? This is a generalization, but they are known for hent... I mean hard work, punctuality, social harmony, respect, and politeness. With this, other races and nationalities may have a set of expectations, requirements, and "privileges" towards Japanese people.
This doesn't even apply to an entire race. Expectations towards Asians are much harder to define since they would be completely different if we're talking about, let's say, Japanese or Chinese.
Continuing this thought experiment, what about Russians? They are white, and I doubt that the average American/European would give them the benefit of the doubt after what happened (though we all need to learn to distinguish people from the government since the actions of a government don't always reflect the will of the people).
And we shouldn't limit this to race since we can go into much smaller groups.
What about the Catholic Church vs Scientology, or the American Red Cross vs MS-13/ISIS, or NASA vs Flat Earth Societies?
So, what is it if it's not a privilege (since most people from a particular group or affiliation have to work for it) and not white since such "privilege" can be applied to other races, nationalities, or other group affiliations?
      ---------------edit
@17:36 Oh wow, I'm so surprised that I feel the need to do my own research, as this sounds quite bizarre to me. For me, the black guy was the obvious choice. The white guy has already proven that he can't be fully trusted and had no problem breaking the law, whereas the black guy has shown that he can play by the rules. At least, that's my opinion, but what do I know about the world...

Race (or gender) never has anything to do with why someone is given a call-back and/or hired. It all depends on the match of a person's education and experience to the position they apply for. One thing that’s not being looked at with this experiment. Is the personality how did the people do in the interview, did they get along with the interviewer, where is there a personalities compatible, what type of attitude to the person being interviewed have.
All of these things are important for a study of this type
People don’t hire people who do not interview well, whose attitude may not be really good, but I just don’t jive with, and I’m not saying that any of that happened however, that needs to be brought into the equation
I have gotten every job I’ve ever reply for and one of the reasons - I interview well, I am a happy interview. I am quick to laugh. I am thoughtful in my answers. I am optimistic.
My brother, on the other hand is a kind of sourpuss, he’s had quite a few interviews and never gotten the job
    Personality matters

Allow me to give you two perspectives that tend to undermine the conclusion of the contrived studies discussed by the professor here.
Nearly a century ago, millions of black Americans migrated North seeking better lives for their families. They ran into clear discrimination in the North they weren't prepared for. They were used to a certain kind of discrimination from whites, but it turned out that Northern BLACKS discriminated against them. Indeed, black leaders spoke openly AGAINST integrating Southern blacks into the North! They considered Southern blacks to be less educated (which they were at the time, of course, through no fault of their own -- they had been denied decent education by Democratic state and local governments in the South for years) and less "cultured" and would therefore "taint" black communities in the North! Obviously, this discrimination wasn't about skin color, but about other characteristics they saw within the blacks moving North. It was culture, not color, that put them at a disadvantage -- and there wasn't any way for those Southern blacks to hide it when they went in to apply for a job, etc, because their speech and their bearing gave them away. (If you think about it, even to this day, this kind of discrimination exists even against WHITE Southerners, who are often thought by Northerners to be poorly educated "hicks" or "rednecks" based just on hearing their accents or attitudes. Indeed, I've seen industrial and hi-tech corporations headquartered in the North with facilities in the South discriminate against Southerners from the area around those facilities when hiring because the executives are from the North. This is likewise not based on skin color.) [Edit: not that when millions of WHITE Southerners migrated North in the first half of the 1900s in the face of rapid industrialization, executives in Northern businesses were quoted complaining that these whites were "stupid" and even "biologically inferior"! Not an anti-white discrimination, but anti-Southern. These whites had different accents, faiths, and dress -- all of which came to be seen by Northern hiring managers as "low brow". Now think of what proportion of American blacks trace their roots to the South. And what effect has modern black American culture had on the situation? Look up the lyrics of classic Motown songs and compare them to the latest hip hop lyrics -- which do you think had/has the more salutary effect on blacks growing up in the culture of the respective eras? And do you think that "black power", "black is beautiful", and "content of their character" memes were more likely to produce a "hiring me is good for your company" attitude among black job sellers, or do you think "fork white privilege!" and "all lives matter is racist!" does? Alas, today's black job seekers are being oppressed by their own culture and leadership.]
Another perspective can be found by looking at the statistics on educational attainment, income, housing, and other aspects tracked across the actual American population -- not some small, contrived study with people acting out fictional characters in a job interview. In this REAL life scenario what we find is that Nigerian Americans actually do better than white Americans! And this is only one of several groups of blacks that fit this pattern. Now, how is this possible if the discrimination is based on skin color and not other things? Surely, Nigerians cannot be mistaken for white by hiring managers or real estate agents or college admissions personnel. But if you've ever known any Nigerian Americans you probably noticed they stand out from the crowd in ways you might not have ever put your finger on. Those ways are cultural, not color based.
In the end, it's crazy to try to claim that there is NO discrimination against black Americans. But it's also crazy to claim that it's virtually universal (systemic or based on some inescapable white privilege) or that it's based on a black/white color preference.

The first guy was actually right in asking the question about the background. Most people not only hire for skills but also for the fit within the team. No matter what the resume says, you don’t want to hire someone who is going to not fit in, which sounds racists as all get out. However, I have hired and fired hundreds of people in my restaurant and financial industry careers. Same formula throughout: do they have the skills or at least the ability and willingness to learn, are they a good fit with the company and team. This formula has lead to great success for many of the team members I have hired; all different races, backgrounds, education levels, and genders. These people had some common qualities: positive attitudes, can do spirit, the ability to learn and learn from their mistakes, and take responsibility for themselves and their mistakes. You can’t know the important info from a piece of paper. Background makes a huge difference in how people are shaped.

Tl;dr - Just because something is perceived as racism, doesn't make it so.
4:08 I don't think there's anyone who believes that discrimination doesn't exist. But a lot of people do try to point out that some interactions, perceived to be racist, actually are not.
For example, while talking to a group of friends awhile back, one of them related an experience they'd had at work. This friend is Asian, and she was troubled because a white female coworker touched a black female coworker's hair without permission. My Asian friend couldn't believe how blatantly racist the white coworker was. In response, one of our white male friends stated that he has had multiple coworkers touch his hair without permission, too. While he agreed that such an action was extremely rude, he insisted that, based upon his own experience, it wasn't a display of racism.

Companies absolutely look at race today and they do it without the knowledge of people. It’s usually the algorithm in the online process. Now it won’t decline anyone but it does flag certain ones and it does promote specific ones over others to the hiring manager or screeners. It’s been going on for a few years at one of the places I’ve worked at.
And this isn’t true about most desirable. Most companies a criminal record will trigger a rejection in the system.

The term "Diversity Hire" doesn't exclusively mean "hired because they're black", it encompasses any person they brought in specifically because they're part of that diversity quota, they might say "we need more women" so they hire more women for diversity. "we need more LGBTQIA+++" so they hire more folks from my community. The issue with Diversity Hiring is that in a good chunk of these cases, the people were brought in regardless of their actual qualifications and more along the lines of the company just being like "oh man, check out how diverse we are, we even have a *add diversity-hire trait here*" and they end up not performing well or actually dragging their business through the mud (ex. Hollywood, Google, old-Twitter, all of which have in the past or currently are, working to either catch their hires up on doing the actual job or straight-up firing them because they weren't doing what they needed to be doing.) This is to say that if some random white guy bitches on X about a place hiring a completely qualified black man instead of him...then it's just the white guy being bitter about losing the job. Actually being qualified for what you're in the job for is different than just being a "Diversity Hire".

The reason he said it doesn’t matter what background they came from is because he’s designing an experiment to test how a result is affected by a condition. We don’t care what caused that condition, we want to know whether it even affects the outcome first. If it turns out that the condition we’re testing has no effect, we drop it and move on. Wasting time debating what causes the conditions that are proven not to matter is senseless.

You have excellent experience with professionals offering internships. However most jobs in the US are not "professional" jobs. Most jobs really suck, crappy hard work for garbage pay. And often the Managers are people who were desperate enough that they did sucky jobs for decades. Most managers of the bottom 50% of jobs, are just the best of the bottom 50%. So it's entirely possible that the most uneducated, unprofessional, desperate overworked abused managers, might discriminate. Even if professionals that you work with, do not.

All things are never perfectly equal in hiring between white and black candidates. If you hire the white person and they are terrible you can fire them without worry of backlash or pushback from HR. The risk with a minority is that if they can’t or won’t perform up to standards it is much harder to move on from them. It sucks being stuck with a crappy employee or coworker regardless of gender or ethnicity. By far the best employees I have hired were ones that I interacted with in a professional setting and recognized their competence and work ethic. I have recruited male and female black, Indian, and white people and all have exceeded my expectations. Going off a resume and interview is a really tough way to pick a candidate.

They don't tell us, and they don't even go so far as to say that both the black and white applicants had the same felony. If they aren't completely transparent, then I will assume it's because they have a reason to not be.

As a business owner, i really could care less about your race, but i do care about your experience, your background, how you present/carry yourself, and are you a good person. I think the left focuses way to much on race. While they love to call people on the right racists, we are some of the most accepting, reasonable, and good hearted people. Never forget, it was the right, who put their lives on line, and fought for the rights of black Americans during the civil war, because we believed in equal rights, and freedom. The left (Democrats) fought to keep slavery, not allow black people to have rights, and looked at them as substandard humans. Yes there is bad people on both sides, just like there are good, but im talking the majority of the party, of what we believe in. People on the right are still fighting constantly, the attacks on the bill of rights and constitutional rights of ALL Americans, attacks done no other then by the Democrats.

To be critical of the discrimination study:
First, it doesn't actually measure reactions to skin color, but to "white sounding" and "black sounding" names. A name that's easily identified with a skin color may not say much about the person with the name, but it does say something about the person's parents, and thus background, that goes beyond merely what race they are. Fair or not, if someone has the first name 'Preston', I'm thinking "snob", and the application is headed for the trash can. For others, Nkebele De'shaun Åfrika Johnson may be a bridge too far.
The study gives a percentage of employers, not of jobs available. Since there are a lot more small businesses than there are large ones, while most jobs are with large businesses, not small ones, the resulting number says little about actual chances of getting hired. E.g. if they tested Amazon and two corner stores, and the two corner stores only hired white people, this study would show 66% discriminatory practices, when, in reality, Amazon has 1.1 million employees, and the two corner stores have less than a handful between them. That would mean that, between these businesses, 0.00045% of available jobs are given based on race. Obviously, I'm not suggesting that this is the real number; even the wildest optimist will realize that it's more than this. I don't know what the real number is, but I'm sure it doesn't start with a zero. I'm just pointing out how absurd results can get.
It also says nothing about the type of jobs. The higher qualifications are needed, the less the likelihood that two applicants will be identical, and the higher the likelihood that, if they are, there will be some diversity quota or desire to "virtue signal".
I find it very plausible that small businesses are more likely to discriminate on irrelevant factors. Where large businesses will have established criteria and practices, small businesses make it up as they go. Where large businesses have internal oversight, to discover and reprimand/dismiss overt racists (or enough of them to keep the rest scared), small businesses don't. Possibly more important than one might think, in small businesses, the one who does the hiring will be working closely with the employee, and with few other colleagues. That means they'll look for someone similar to themselves, and they'll be doing it with nothing more to go on than a formal job application. That's not an excuse; in fact, that some will think they have more in common with a felon of their own skin color, than a non-felon of another skin color is either disturbing, irrational, or both. Still, it's not completely irrational; skin color is still an indicator of cultural background, even if less so than before. Billy-Bob may not be entirely wrong in assuming that he'll have more shared culture with Bubba than with Thamsanqa. If shared background is important, and skin color is the only indicator, cynical rationality dictates using that indicator. I find that people's emotional intuition is frequently aligned with cynical rationality.

I've seen over the past 10 years at my job the diversity change happen and have concluded after conversations with new hires from the diverse backgrounds, have become better workers and have a better attitude and persona than most of the white hires we had working already also including the white new hires. Just over the past year almost every new hire that has been hired came from a diverse background with a felony criminal record and are blowing the interviews out the park with their new mindset of wanting more instead of falling back down the rabbit hole that got them the felony record in the first place. Our new hire staff has done an amazing job weeding out the less desirable candidates no matter what background they come from. Before the last 2 years my company had so much turn over due to lack of people actually wanting to work or wanting to learn their new job that we have had to out source to hiring agency and rent workers just to stay on schedule. Those rentals were for extended period of time, most were 90 days, just due to the training involved to find a worker that's willing to learn and do the job required. We have even implemented hiring female workers to do jobs that most men that were hired couldn't or wasn't willing to do and they have succeeded so much so into high ranking promotions within our company. Yes there are sources of racism in all aspects of life but if the person continues to let racism be the cause of not succeeding shows that there not willing to rise above and show their worth. Stop letting racism dictate your character and have a conversation about viewing it from a different perspective to show how you feel you are being wronged. At the top of the whole BLM movement I set out to want to hold that conversation within the black community just so I could get a better understanding of what turmoil they are or have went through and I now see it from a different perspective than what I was seeing and reading with my own eyes. I've found that respect and equal opportunity is really all they're asking for and to not be treated differently like they have for hundreds of years. If all people would put blindfolds on and just hold a normalized conversation without seeing color you would find that most people who come from diverse backgrounds are the same people but because of the narrative portrayed most people let skin color dictate outcomes that aren't favorable for those from diverse backgrounds. Not everyone is perfect and not everyone is bad you just gotta approach it with an open mindset without bias toward one way or another.

Why didn't he cite the study? or even mention any of the particulars of the study? there are so many reasons why this study could have had this outcome, but it's impossible to argue the validity of it because he didn't give us a single piece of information about the study that we could use to find it and fact check it, or compare it to other more up-to-date studies, or see if it has been peer reviewed or anything.
