Jaime's LAST Fly-In Ever ~ Contest Announcement??

  • Jaime's displeasure of flying into the major airshows (Sun 'n Fun and AirVenture Oshkosh) has grown over the years. Unfortunately this one may have pushed her over the edge. We avoid holding IFR on the way down to Lakeland by inching closer and then canceling to go VFR down low in the bumps for the final leg. The Lake Parker Air Traffic Controllers threw us a curveball with the Winter Haven bit and the main tower at Lakeland lost their communications temporarily. Finally, a slower Cessna that was told to go to the skinny runway slid over and landed in front of us causing me to try to point right a little in the flare in case he slowed rapidly.

    OMG! These fly-in's are crazy. Flew in to an airshow as a passenger on a 172 and will never forget the ATC telling us to follow the Sherman instead of Stearman. My friend piolting was like, "There's a tank in the pattern?" Great job Kevin and Jamie!

    Back in the early 80's, my wife and I were flying into a west coast fly-in in a V-tail in mixed traffic and it was pretty stressful. I was glad to have her along as she was a pretty good navigator and spotter. It is an amazing feeling of calm one feels sitting in a lawn chair on the ground after a difficult and stressful approach and landing especially when we were landing in tandem with another plane. Felt the very intense emotions that Jaime was experiencing and will show this video to my wife as I am sure she will relate to her. Thanks for sharing this video!

      Good ol' SkyKing.
      I loved that show when I was a kid (way back in the late 55's early 66's).
      My dad had an Aircoupe (I believe the Alon A-2, with the sliding-bubble canopy...like a flying Batmobile). That was fun! He had it staked out at the old (original) 'Tamiami Airport' in Miami/Dade County, FL. South side of the Tamiami Trail-8 Street (but has been FIU for many years now).
      I hope Jamie doesn't cave in to her fears, but overcomes them.
      Kevin is a very competent pilot; it appeared to me that the ACC's were on top of it all.
      If nothing else, couldn't Kevin have just flown out of all that mess for a few or so minutes; then come back when/if things were less hectic?
      Now about that whole radio going silent...that is a bit spooky. The must be some protocol for when that occurs.

      Actually the concept works well and could provide the FAA with ideas how to safely increase traffic into airports where air traffic controllers provide a more invasive service. VFR: see and be seen can work especially with more airplanes equipped with TCAS and ADS-B out. The event has an admirable safety record and moves traffic with minimal delays.

    • @valuedhumanoid6574
      @valuedhumanoid6574 3 роки тому +3

      This just reaffirms my belief that eventually these mega fly-in events is going to have a very bad accident. When the controller is yelling "everyone on downwind turn to base right now" and repeats it four times...and then you have pilots like that bozo who slid over to occupy your runway added to the mix...yeah, that's no good. They need a much better arrival system. Like an IRF autopilot required approach. Something.

      @patchescessna7348 3 роки тому +1

      @sgd5k292 3 роки тому +1

      @@valuedhumanoid6574 Yeah, it is almost as bad as driving everyday to and from work on a busy freeway where there are "very bad accidents" frequently caused by stupid people driving too fast, following too closely and lane changing....At least the controllers and pilots (for the most part) have some training.

    • @ParadigmUnkn0wn
      @ParadigmUnkn0wn 3 роки тому

      @@sgd5k292, you think the cattle auctioneer that cutoff the other controller to say, "Everybody on extended downwind turn base. *short pause* EVERYONE turn base!" had very much training?
      He then cut in again to basically threaten pilots to keep flying based on his crazy instructions or they'd go into holding.
      Most of those accidents you see on the highway aren't fatal. Mid-air collisions are universally fatal unless you have: you have an ejection seat, a parachute, or your plane has a parachute. Even with any (or all) of those things, a midair collisions still have abysmally high fatality rates. Not to mention the people on the ground.
      I've seen Oshkosh arrival videos that looked very safe. The requirement to get inline far out and the well-defined route, altitudes, and holding patterns all work very well. They have multiple spotting stations and frequencies. Their controllers don't cut into each others transmissions unless it's an emergency. This was a failure on all levels.

    Can't fault Jamie. Always WAY easier when your the one flying. Flying into OSH after the 1sr two times we had had enough of the crazy stuff and started flying in on Thursdays to avoid this stress. Have been there 15 times now and its fantastic each time. Love the 310, we had a 1955 and our latest a 1969 310P very similar to this 73 Q. Thanks for sharing!

    I don't even know Jamie, but after watching this I want to give her a good hug and commend her for how she hung tough continuing to provide critical/crucial situational awareness on the approaching and landing!!! Great job by you both to navigate and communicate throughout the chaos of this approach and landing!!!

    Jamie did a dang good job keeping her eyes looking around and giving call outs on traffic even after you could see the stress push her limits at 11:00... Well done to her!

    Hi Jaime and Kevin - enjoy all your videos, keep up the great content. Jaime, I hope that you enjoyed SNF in spite of the stressful arrival. I am the fellow who gave you and your friends the bag of ice one evening at the aircraft camping area - hope all the beverages went down smooth! Come back and visit Maine sometime. Take care, Andy
