That’s where electric doesn’t make sense. 134miles for £38. My car is £20 for 100miles. Only makes sense if you charge at home. If you can’t charge at home, no access, it’s not a fair replacement and therefore it’s not the future for everyone
It’s 190 miles for 34 from a expensive super charger at 85p pkwh at home it would be 20p pkwh and only 10p if charging at night
Absolutely correct, it only really makes sense if you've got a home charger. I recently got a an EV and am lucky enough to have a drive (the only one in the street) & home charger and it costs about £5 to charge. If we didn't have a drive then it's not economically feasible.
In my Vauxhall Corsa D (2020) 100 miles is 11 quid....range is 600 miles....2 mins to `full charge`....car cost me £11,500 at 2 years old with 20k on the clock....will not spontaneously combust, 600 mile range whatever the weather/temp...etc
You are correct....`not for everyone`.
As regards Rob/Chris...yet again, nice little earner and that`s what it`s all about...as regards EVs, do your research (A lot have not & just jumped in on the strength of the lying MSM/Govt) fully and take your time when buying.....
If you don't have photovoltaics at home, electric cars are just too expensive. My little Mitsubishi will do 180 miles for £20, and it will still be running in twenty years. A little accident with an EV were the battery is damaged and the car is a right off. A lot of insurance companies don't cover EV batteries, check the small print.
@@geordiegeorge9041you don’t need PV but access to a wall charge helps a lot. It costs 3ppm to charge at home using Octopus Go at night.
Chris sounding a bit rough at the moment , get well soon mate 👍
Just a word of caution guys, only charge to 100% if you're doing a long journey. For normal running, charge to 80% to prolong battery life.
It's also quicker to charge to 80% and do a further top up charge, than it is to charge to 100%.
This is something you'll learn if you keep the EV for a period of time.
Great video to dip your toes into the world of EVs.
Incidentally we have an Audi Q8 e-tron away at the body shop for a ding in the rear nearside wheel arch, caused by a car door being blown into it.....the cost to repair the ding £800.
The wrapped trim looks better than the original. Great call.
Ironically, most cars with carbon wrap on the trim are all metal bodyshells, but this car can justify having carbon-wrapped trim, as its entire bodyshell is made of carbon fibre (see the sills at 7:40)
Although reason for matt finish is to elimnate reflections. We have an i3 and everything is matt finish on the dash.
The CF wrap looks much more up-market..
I would be a bit concerned about the gloss finish on the carbon wrap, I think it's going to reflect the sunlight a bit, the old finish was matt for a reason
I suggested the carbon wrap in the first episode although I envisaged like I did mine with a less glossy finish and the small right panel with a weave / and \ on others.
Lovely job, well done 👍 £38 for around 12-130 miles of range. 30p per mile. About double my diesel cost per mile 🤯🤯🤔🤔🥳🥳😮😮
Less than £4 overnight home charge though
Better get a long extension lead if your a few hundred miles away from home then🤣@@andru9102
For those who might read and asking questions re charging.
Instavolt is pretty much the most expensive charging network there is. Most would only us these if forced to.
Charging to 100% takes far longer than stopping at 80% and then just going again.
Not criticising here, but these are important factors.
If you are on a long journey you don't have much choice of chargers as you need to charge when you are low.....similarly if you are travelling distance, do you really want to start off with 20% off your range when you charge?
@@bobstirling6885there are loads of choices for chargers!
@zilspeed I'm glad you mentioned this as I was going to myself: I would have been interested to see how fast it got to 80%. My niece has just bought a new iX and the charge to 80% is very fast indeed, but then tapers off towards 100%. The charge time to 80% from about 10-15% is time enough for her to break a long drive and recharge herself with a decent coffee.
I was gonna say £38 for 136mls is quite expensive 😬
@@bobstirling6885if you’re travelling a distance you’re likely going to be starting from home, so you would likely have charged to 100%
23:37 'free road tax'.. not for long; electric cars may be exempt from VED bills at the moment, but you still have to apply to tax your car in the normal way each year on the government car tax website; you must also get an MOT in the same way as regular cars.
In 2025, the electric car tax distinction will disappear altogether, and EV owners will have to pay VED at the same rate as petrol and diesel models within their pricing thresholds. This will apply to existing EVs as well as brand new ones - at current rates that would mean an annual bill of £165 after the first year.
Pre 2017 EV's are £20
Sorry fellas 38 notes for a rapid charge is absolutely obscene no wonder these corned beef tins are not taking off i am 59 years of age and I hope I will be long gone before these sheds become the daily round stay lucky and healthy take it easy looking forward to Wednesday's video 📹 already if that was one lady owner I would hate to see one that has been tharsed not one for me. 😊
My thoughts exactly, £38 and barely any mileage from it, total white elephant!😂
£34 that was 80p per kWh at home that would be 20p kWh
I think I'll keep hold of my 2014 dirty Diesel Vauxhall Insignia! Free road tax, big boot and any back street garage can swap parts out for a pittance! Fair play on Chris and Rob making a quick profit and getting back to bread and butter cars
Excellent video. just a note to anyone thinking of buying a crash damaged BMW fully electric vehicle. if any of the airbags have blown its a full HV battery out job to replace the pyrofuse and control unit within. it needs a special end of service tool and direct communication with BMW Germany. BMW charge £8000 to do that job.
Yep the guys got lucky on this one, in most cases people won't be. Personally I hate EVs, especially the excuses to force them on us. I really hope people don't see this video as meaning EVs are an easy fix, most are not, This actually highlights what you might get off with, e.g body panel and winscreen stuff start getting involved with electrical issues on these it's over.
Thankfully there’s an ever increasing network of HEVRA mechanics who will charge a fraction of that.
Ok if it’s almost new and you are pretty confident on getting 20k for the finished article but anything older probably not worth it..
I think even with 8000£ repair I think these gents could make a profit and leave a little for the next guy.
@@marksutherland774 who is forcing who to buy an EV?
Nice one gents! Incidentally, if you had a wall charger at home, you can charge at night for about 7p per kwh, and not 86p. Would have cost around £3 for the same recharge! 👍
Would like to know how you get electric fir 7p pkh 😂
@@bigfist255 look on Internet at Octopus Energy car charging plan......
@@bigfist255Octopus Energy EV charging plan.......
Well they will give the carrot 🥕 but as more people start using it don't expect it to stay that rate.
@@bigfist255 But now it still is and will for a long time. No ice car can ever get close to the price pr mile ever as home charging the ev does.
£35 odd and not even 150 miles. Shocking. My 2 litre gives 280 odd miles on efficiency mode. And no waiting an hour to charge lol.
Just a tip for those rapid chargers just charge to 85% the last 15 takes longer and costs more - 20% to 85% is optimal for rapid.
I get more then 134miles in my 2L bmw for 20 pound
I really look forward to your Sunday night video release. Well done lads, It won't be long before you are on the Discovery channel. Keep up the good work.
In a world full of charlatans and rip-off merchants it is heartwarming to see 2 genuine fellas doing good work and keeping people entertained.
If you see any smoke from that car, move quickly away and avoid inhaling it, it’s highly toxic.
Don’t attempt to tackle the fire yourself, it requires special hazmat equipment - just call 999
Unreal lads congrats, ye are giving damaged repairs a good name and value at a good price
I absolutely love the pure genuine attitude you guys have proper down to earth 👌👌👌
So the cost equivalent of doing 26 to the gallon in a small car and a long wait to get on the charger and an hour and twenty minutes charging. Life's too short !. EVs are still only town cars that you charge at home. Another brilliant video though, educational, interesting and amusing.
"The cost equivalent" (in this case) of driving from home, onto a motorway, then to the services to fill up with the most expensive fuel possible, then driving home.
.
Change of mindset required.
.
Not
"Let's go and charge the car"
.
Actually
"We're going to to "do things".... They have free (slow) charging, but we're there for 2 hours anyway!"
.
You leave *the place you were going to anyway* with a fully charged car.
Its all ok now with EVs just wait until you cannot find a charge point and the charge rate will be treble to what your paying now
I am driving a Copart Cat S MG5 61kwh. I bought it to fix and sell but really like it so am selling the other car now. (Also a Copart special).
Zero street cred in it but its cheap to run and and great to drive.
As others here are saying tho, if stuck with public chargers only, itd more expensive than a decent diesel equivalent. On octopus at 9p though.. can't go wrong
You guys are a brilliant duo. Seems like there’s a great deal of mutual respect as well
Imagine spending over an hour at a fuel pump and you had to wait for someone else to finish charging. EV’s are not fit for purpose as the charging network isn’t in place and the value of them drops like a stone. Very hard to part exchange and the range is poor. Okay for a second car if you can charge at home but why not just run a small petrol car?
I saw on another channel talking about Instavolt charges are excessive and Rob you have just proved it , 85p a unit, 3x your home electric cost. That's a rip off.
Every damaged vehicle is a calculated risk, isn't it, Rob. This one was spot on tbh work with.
Absolutely brilliant 🤩 that wrap really made a big difference 👍🏻 Well done Rob & Chris 😊
Brave choice there guys, glad it paid off for you, and a nice vehicle to boot! 👍
Cracking vid Rob. I think the wrap on the right of the steering wheel looks good the way it is. It runs in the same direction as the vent next to it
Another brilliant job well done lads and great video keep up the great work.
Great job as always Rob & chris look forward to seeing more electric cars on the channel 👍👍👍👍
buddy had the 20kw and it stopped. Main dealer said the loom was burnt, but a real expert said the inverter had blown phases and it needed new modules to begin with. Turns out the repair was not worth it. as the repair was at least 8-10k
Super job guys! The trim looks brilliant....Cheers guys enjoy your week...👍
Great work gentlemen! Well done.
You forgot some of the most important numbers - the extortionate 85p per KWh you paid for the rapid charge! That makes it far most expensive than diesel or even petrol to run! You need to be able to use home charging for a max of 29p or as low as 7p on the right smart EV tariff.
So happy we got a test drive clip too ❤ we need more first drive clips. Absolutely love your work keep it up 😊
I love these cars, did a 2018 a year ago absolutely brilliant car. Very quick and quiet.
Think you've shown us all some interesting/valuable stuff on EV's
£34 quid for 134 miles is terrible 🤣
Lovely little motor, fantastic job chaps.
Excellent result guys. Well done .
When you said it needed 2 rear tyres, Ihave heard EVs eat tyres because of the weight, great video and nice car
This is an amazing car, good job Rob and Chris all the best in the future @salvage rebuilds uk
Yet again another cracking video lads thanks for sharing ❤
£494 for 2 tyres? hope they’re made of gold 😂😂
Great video, shame I’m not in the market for a new car until next year at the earliest, but an EV is deffo on my radar
Great transformation, it’s turned out amazing - well done chaps👍
Love your videos guys! Please dont ever change! ❤
Coming along & great job guys. The hockey stick is not actually painted but it is the colour of the plastic, so BMW could keep the tone exact throughout the car. Same as the blue side trims. These tyres for this car are bloody expensive for what they are and only come with 6mm of tread. I have fitted 195/55/20 on these rims before without spacers. Some people also put them on the front, but on a 5.5" rim it's a bit sketchy 👍
Sorry, cars need to make a noise when you turn key lmao I'm not ready to buy a shopping trolley yet 😂😂😂
Milk float
New to EV world but home charging at 7.5 pence to do 4.5 miles so 2 pence roughly per mile, external charging is very expensive but is subsidised in cases by manufacturers and prices should come down when more competition arrives 😊
Very enjoyable thanks. Good job
Awesome video thanks lads very much appreciated top job top team 🇬🇧👍
Hi Rob, There's also a fast charger down the road from Bobbing MCDs. At the Jenny Wren pub/restaurant, it would've been cheaper, too. Make sure you remember for your next EV! Lovely 2 part series and a lovely, easy job. Keep the videos coming
Cracking little motor & as usual professional job
It turned out very nice, and looks great. I think the carbon fibre was a good call as well. There is a good profit in it for you Gents. Well done Rob and Chris this is just like new now. 👍👍
Great purchase and yet again great video well done lads only channel on UA-cam that’s consistent and it’s free
Cracking video chaps, nice work Rob. Get well soon Chris
You're right to look as proud as you do. Fantastic job chaps!!!
What a great purchase that was! Trims looked ace in carbon chaps, nice work!
Ive never been into car mechanics in any shape or form. But, you two make it so friggin cool. Love what you both do.
Great result. Cheap car that. Well done chaps.
Nice video if only all your projects were like this but then again you guys like a challenge🙂 Personaly Rob's experience with a public charger is a lot of what puts me off EV's queuing to get on a charger, waiting an hour for the thing to charge and then paying a rip off rate per Kw! Think I'll stick to filling my ICE car up at the fuel station.
A couple of years ago, EV charging was free everywhere - now generally only at hotels. Tesco costs about half the price of that charger.
Poor old Chris sounded a bit rough hope you’re feeling better ! Car looks new again nice job . Each to there own on EV’s we all like what we like but there not for me I’m afraid 👍
Watched this the other day on telly , good interesting new subject, matter. All getting very technical , not a Viva is it?
Looking through the American versions and boy have they a way to go. Nico Bros hacking away in shorts & sandals with hammer and chisel.
Not a patch on your professional work... I would buy off you any time.
You guys got really lucky deservedly after the gamble 👍 if you would have had to replace any electronics you would have been taken to the cleaners with BmW . I’ve just had a new battery on my new motorcycle (yes I know ) 179 £ for a battery I don’t know if it’s gel or lead acid but whatever . After a 3 moth battle with bmw it was replaced under warranty. Anyway great vids guys keep ‘em coming 👍👍
What fascinates me is setting the “single pedal” mode.. you drive it purely with the accelerator, never need to touch the brake pedal… soon get used to it … fabulous 😊
I discovered that when the i3 first came out and I was offered a test drive whilst my ICE BMW was being fixed. You just needed the conventional brakes to bring it to a full stop.
Yes me too! (I test drove one of the prototype minis around a very busy Reading town centre about ten years ago now) and it actually made a lot of sense. I don’t think I actually touched the brakes once!
Not even a mode on the i3, it's always on and it works brilliantly.
That's a fantastic job well done to both of you
Rapid charging is more expensive especially if you use a instavolt charger point. Charging your ev at home is a much cheaper option . I use bp pulse 7kw charger in a carpark near my shop and last month's bill was only £50 approx. .
The wrapped trim look so much better and really lifts the interior of the car just like a new set of plates on the outside or freshly painted wheels does to the outside of the car.
Outstanding job, and great call on the carbon wrap! Looking forward to seeing more EV on the channel. Been driving a Tesla since November and love it. But then I don't drive 1,000 miles every day pulling a caravan and still waiting for any of my lithium powered devices to blow up...
Good evening Rob and Chris, as you said Rob it looks like new. First all electric car now done on the channel. Those fees are really expensive. Thank you for taking the time to upload another video. Ged
Nope. Our 2018 Mondeo diesel works out so much cheaper per 100 km than anything electric. For EV's to make any sense at all they need to be half the price they are now and cost half as much to charge on a fast charger. Here in Australia at least they just don't cut it.
Biggest problem will be finding someone stupid enough to buy the milk float
Another great video, you make your own luck, good to see you out ahead on this one.
Great video. Thanks 😊
Love the carbon wrap, lifts the interior!
Great video and work as always Rob, love that you put OEM windscreens! :D
Another day another perfekt job. Thumbs up 👍
Congrats guys, you deserve a little tickle, great content, proper reality.
Pleased for you both with a good return. 👍👍👍👍
Great video as per loved it
Nice change from the usual foder. I'm thinking maybe more cars from other manufacturers to widen the interest?
Should be plenty of EV's coming up for sale considering the demand has crashed, get rid quick and great work.
Not sure how long you will have it before it sells, but don't keep it above 80% charge for long periods of time as it will shorten the batteries life .
Looks like you have had yourselves a winner with this one, looking forward to what you get your hands on in the future 👍.
Nice dive into the ev market guys certainly not for the faint hearted, seeing how it went when Chris hurtled up and down the yard can’t see it sitting long even though most people are still wary of ev,s , another nice post guys 😊
Great little car, well done guys !!
That's a pretty good price considering the age of it. I think my 2014 i3 would sell for about £5k given its high mileage.
Sounds like Chris could do with a hot whisky
Glad you went to £16k, lads. I feared you were going to take a smaller profit, like you often do. Well done. But is only true pros who make things look so easy. Good luck for the next one.
if you calculate your time spend at charger it becomes a lot more expensive per charge. As it take a lot of time away from other things if you not have a charger at home or location of work.
wow someone's going to get a bargin motor another cracking video guys looking forward to the next one keep them coming 👍👍👍👍💯💯💯💯
Brilliant work guys
Great seeing you do i3 well done good video
A great video and a great car well Rob and Chris
Liam cracks on! Priceless!
I really like the look f these. Very funky and like the old boxy little Audi almost a timeless design. Great profit, car, and video thanks👍
I have an all electric Volvo and with the car you get 12 months free subscription for cheaper rapid charging.
InstaVolt is only 47p/kWh.
I use the card for emergencies and charge at home at 7.5p/kWh which costs £5 and gives me 220miles of range.
What’s not to like, 408hp, 0-60 in 4.5seconds, faster than my old Golf R
Nice one guys!!! hope you find some more 😀😀
Electric cars are just about control... people just don't realise.... Great video though bro
A little fantastic electric BMW well done guys , another fantastic video.
lovely to see you make up for the Corsa, top job as always
Had a right result there, lads.
Well done, and keep up the good videos.
