- In most cases, survival training is done in tiers or levels. This means that you would usually start with introductory courses and make your way to the top until you’ve become advanced.

His class was one of the best and hardest things i have done. As a big man with bad joints it was hard but a proud achievement to complete
Good for you, it must have tough.
I attended the Basic Survival Course this past October, and the tips Dave is generously passing on to you here are worth their weight in gold. I followed the packing list to the letter, and gear wise, it absolutely set me up for success. I'll echo what he said about food, bring items that you can eat on the fly. Think protein bars, dried fruit, nuts, and a few hard candies. Potable drinking water is provided on site all through the course, my suggestion is to bring electrolyte packets to add in your bottle! You'll need it regardless of what season you attend. Fitness is important! I earned the patch, but my time there could've been much less painful if I took the time to get into better shape. Enjoy the training! Come out with a positive mental attitude, listen to everything they say, and never give up! They won't give up on you, as long as you don't quit on yourself! DFQ!!! Basic does not mean easy, but in the end, it was all worth it. Best money I've ever spent. I'll be heading back in September for their Bushcraft 101 class. 🙂
The fact that this has to be pounded home speaks volumes about why people get into bad situations while camping/hiking. Upside is at least they found a school that won't let it slide. Good job Dave!
You’re exactly spot on ,their poor choices while on the trail no matter where it’s at.
There's a lot of stupid weekend warriors out there.
The testimonials in this comment section, from people who have already taken the course, really speaks volumes about the excellence of Dave's survival school.
I really love the Basic class, enough that I take it at least once a year and have two packs ready to go for it, one for me, and one to bring a friend. I'll keep going to it as long as Dave allows me to, and I'll keep bringing my friends because it's just that awesome of an experience, and it's a heck of a recharge for me personally.
I love the persistence of the cat . I was laughing so hard. Cool to see Dave lets cats have homes on the property!
You can tell Dave is a great guy from how his animals love being with him.
Coyotes and beaver would say otherwise. 🤪
@@StoneE4 foxes too...
Cats are evil. They only give affection when it's unwanted.
My daughter and I took the class this past October. Bring food you can eat on the fly - pemmican, protein bars, etc. Electrolyte powders for the drinking water bottle were quite useful, too. Clean socks and underwear will make your life more comfortable - your feet will get wet. My daughter threw her shoes away after the course. Oh yeah, a hotel room at least for the night after the course is a Godsend.
Don't skimp on a headlamp. Spend the few extra clams on a good one. You'll be happy in the end that you did. If you like your legs all scratched up and bloody, then make sure you wear some shorts. Pockets on your clothing will get used if you have them.
It's not easy, but it is not impossible, either. If you don't give up on yourself, staff will not give up on you. Think of it this way - it's a survival course. If you give up in a survival situation, you die. Fortunately, during this course if you give up, you go home. I can not emphasize enough to not give up. Dave and the staff do not want you to give up, and will do all they can to help you complete it. They do not try to make you quit like some people say they do.
Exactly. We want everyone to succeed
Thanks for the encouragement. I aim to do this in the next three months.
I get so excited when i recieve Dave's noticifications! I took the basic class last year. It was an excellent experience. I highly recommend dave and the Pathfinder instructors. World class survival school. Im signed up for the Intermediate in november.
I took this class a little over a year ago and really enjoyed it.
Dave, you remind me of every instructor I ever had while I was in the Army. Pounding things into our heads because you know how important it is. I am sure that some will call your approach arrogant. It’s not arrogance. It is truth and the truth will decide if you can survive on your own or with a group. Proper gear is only half of this equation. Familiarize yourself with your gear. Get out into the woods and use it. I cannot wait to take this course and then the next.
SAK = Swiss Army Knife.
Never heard this before, had to look it up, I hate unexplained acronyms!!!!
This is one of the best classes I ever took. Well worth it, I highly recommend it.
Can’t emphasize both the value of this class, and adherence to what Dave says. I graduated (patched) 2 weeks ago and it was a rewarding experience, I actually left feeling like I earned something. For me, when Dave says 90° spine on your knife, listen, because that spine needs a burr on it to be effective.
the best spine I've ever seen is on my opinel folder. Strikes spark better than any other spine I've tried.
Thanks for the video. My daughter and are excited to be taking your class May.
Great video for up and coming students. Man that cat loves affection, felines just love them!
Im gona take the class soon thanks for all you do Dave!
Have had that gear list for years and used it all over and over without fail. Still use the first 32oz water bottle that came out from SRO,drank tons of water and it's been used to make char and boil water alot of times that's why you stick with the list that's recommended. My problem is getting to the school but will someday. That Mascat wanted to join the video so bad haha. Hope to be able to get to the school soon and as always thank you for all you do Dave Canterbury!! 👍
Good to hear about the cabin rentals for the night before. Cannot wait to take Basic Survival with y'all.
This was such great info. Wish I had seen it before I went to the Basic Class a couple of weeks later in May. Many of the questions I had that were such big unknowns and caused me to over pack were answered in this video. Thanks for putting this out Dave
Had to stop the video - this cat is crackin' me up!!!!!
Seria uma honra ter uma aula de sobrevivência com o mestre! Thank you Dave! Aqui do Brasil. 👍
LOVE YOUR PROGRAM-- HOWDY --- I'M UP IN THE ROCKIES NORTH OF CRAIG, CO. SPEND LOTS OF TIME IN MTS. I GET LOTS OF IDEAS FROM YOU. THANK YOU. me
Dave, you're still the best survivalist on TV or YT! I've been a big fan from the Discovery channel days, nobody comes close!
Dave is 100% legit, and as knowledgeable as they come. Big fan.
Starting buying from your list already thank you 🙏 for the information I will do your class
You tell em DC.! Truly understand when rookies try to make changes & replacement. We all gone through it one time or another. Your kit is similar to our Outback Survival training. Love the cat. Love the Ninja Turtle.! Greetings from Australia.
Good job Sir
I dig the official Path Finder's School cat. He/she is making me chuckle.
Hello from Detroit Michigan brother thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise and for taking us on your adventure into the outdoors
Ima thinking it would be GREAT if you offered a shutlle pick up from whichever airport is nearby. It would be hard to drive the distance or drive the to and from to your location. Just a suggestion. But then again you mught get overflow of participants and then it would be like a waitlist.
That was pretty specific equipment and I know you know exactly what you're talkin about because you've done this for 12 years plus. It's too bad I guess I'm just too old to come try to do what you young guys are doing. Have a great day and stay safe and keep your powder dry!
From my experience, if you can walk 3-5 miles per day for 2 days, you can probably take the course and do ok. There’s no real heavy lifting other than your pack and gathering smalls (sticks for fires). Contact the Pathfinder School and I’m sure they would discuss it with you.
@@dannyh9010 it's not like I don't know how about survival and Bushcraft oh, I've been doing it since I was 12 years old. I just thought it might be interesting to maybe learn something that I don't know to add to my survival and Bushcraft knowledge. I can't go like I used to and I can't make the two miles much less the 2 to 5 miles. I've had two lower back surgeries and two neck surgeries and it's a little hard to carry a backpack and walk that far so I can only dream about it now. But thanks for the info anyway I'm sure they would talk to me about it. Thanks again
That's a great load out!!! Thanks for the videos.
Make sure the Kitty gets a certificate & treat for course completion ......
Be there in sept. For the basic class, super excited for the experience, knowledge!
Thank You for the update Boss
Hi Dave, big fan here. There seems to be a discrepancy in the number of 6 mil bags, I believe you said 2 here but the basic class list on your site says 4. These bags are somewhat heavy and take space in the rucksack so if only 2 are needed....
That cat is awesome 👌
More videos with the cat please! He is the star of the show.
And the teenage mutant ninja turtle on the white board.
The cat is very friendly. I was sharing some of my jerky with him.
Apparently, compass time is when Path Finder's School time out was instituted for the official cat. lol
The Official Cat, puts you much higher in my esteem.
Great information will help many get started. I deffinatly recomend all the classes cause you learn so much each time you go.
Even though I already took the course, I still watched this start to finish. Great info, and a great reminder as to why the gear on the list is important.
Awesome info video. I plan on coming to a class when I move back to ohio from Phoenix. Love the cat.
Just got my order... your gear is top notch!
Appreciate you breaking it down Barney style for us Dave 😂. But I get that you can’t be clear enough with instructions like this
The cat wants to be the star of the show. 😂 Great video, Dave. I hope some time to make the trip up to Ohio for one of your classes. I'm confident I would learn a lot.
I watched this video for the cat. I can tell he really loves you.
Darn, You mean I can't show up with a 10 for a dollar button compass? Mors Kochanski said those were the best, lol!! ;)
I wound not mess with Dave like that cat knowing he eats just about anything!
That cat just stole the show.🤣
Should do more with the kitty 😂
Fantastic!
It's good to see that the turtles are representing. By the looks of it, I'd say it was Raph in attendance.
I was thinking its Leonardo since hes the only one that carries a cutting tool.
Super excited!
Sad that people can't read and comprehend. Clearly details matter...is titanium cup and water bottle good to go? Bankline, twisted or braided? Anybody in the military has heard "Failure to Follow Instructions" and "You are a NO-GO at this station" LOL. Those compasses are kind of hard to find or maybe I'm not looking good enough. I still have my 80's issue Cammenga, it still glows! I like the cat. I bought a case of the 6 mil bags, I think it was $42 for 2 dozen bags. I don't think that's unreasonable and they're really handy!
I believe the bankline should be twisted. It can be separated into smaller strands. Verify that.
Question: How do you feel about attending any of the classes with a friend or two? I would love to come take the class with a couple of buddies, but I wasn’t sure how y’all felt about students who knew each other or if you preferred that everyone “be a solo”.
Happens a lot
Great Job made my Day Love you all.Love from India Hell 😊👍
I hope to be able to at least attend the basic class!! Between being in the Guard and drilling once a month and working 70 hours a week it’s hard to make the commitment to the class! I can’t keep any maintenance guys working because they say it’s to many hours!! Good video Dave
Ohio Guard??
Put Amazon links in the description of this, you would of made a few thousand off amazon associates by now.
I HAVE TO KNOW WHICH NINJA TURTLE THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE ON THE WHITEBOARD PLEASE!!! It seems stupid but it means a lot. Love your work Dave, I’m a long time supporter.
My vote is Michelangelo.
Its probably Leonardo. I remember him deer hunting with a bow in one of the comics and hes the only one that carries a cutting tool.
I don’t know if is the same from when I took Dave’s Basic Course, but it would have been good to know that potable water was provided to students. I know that is not the case for the Intermediate and Advanced Courses.
The gear list on your website says to bring four, 6mil, 55 gallon drum liners, and you mentioned to bring two. Just want confirmation on the number of drum liners I need to bring.
If I chose to purchase all of the items listed in the "rental" kit, how much would that cost, and where can I find a list with cost of each individual required item? Thanks!!
Thumbs up for Survival Cat!!
I wish he would have another course where I could bring the gear I already have and use regularly....
Do you sell 'pre-bundled' kits for each of your classes online?
i would love to take some survivalist courses from your school.
What about the camping setup for the first night, for anyone who is not staying in the cabin? How is that gear handled? Are you expected to carry the camping setup with the gear list items during the class?
Do you think you could put together a med kit bag might have in it from nature I know before stethoscopes doctor used a cylinder type devise
I see you brought your EDC; Every Day Cat. ;)
Cats 😂 they want scratches when they want em not when you want to 😂
Dave, when are you going to have more blacksmithing courses?
See you in July!
the cat is awesome.
Dave, are there any plans to branch out to the UK? I know you have done Europe before...appreciate your vids...CC.
Too old too broke down, I like it. Hurry up and wait. I truly appreciate Dave and SRO. Hope they're open for walk ins, go to OH a bunch and love to stop in. Kind of Army except Army relies on bureaucracy this is one and only on yourself.
Hi Dave, How can I tell if my knife has a 90° spine? Thanks in Advance.
What’s the difference between the mc2 and the global compass? Is one preferred or better than the other?
Hey Dave can you use a pathfinder canteen and cup
The real unanswered question though... Which ninja turtle is that on the board?! 🤣🤣
Great info as always Dave
Don’t have a clue I think a youngen drew that
i love the cat!!!
Hey Dave is the hill people gear mountain serape acceptable replacement for swag man roll
Why a wool blanket or swagman roll? Would a sleeping bag be acceptable?
That is exactly how I draw a turtle ☺️👍🏼👏🏼
Go ninja Go ninja Go!
Dave, which is your favorite? Silky or Laplander?
Dave, you need to make sure you wash those hands after going fishing, then you won’t have that pesky cat bothering you so much. 🤣
Is there a parking near to the class grounds to drop off the car while on 3 days survival class?
Do you recommend the braided or twisted #36 tarred bank line?
When are you making a class in spain??
Would the pathfinder canteen count for the boiling challenge?
The cat is fine man
Dam cat. Love it
Good old attack cat ! Sure do miss Rufus ….
Yeah....What happened to Rufus? He was a cool dog.
Are there any homeopathic-type tick repellents that work well?
The waterproof hat could be used to collect water.
Where is your school?
Is a sleeping pad allowed?
5X7 is fine for your size Dave, what if you are 6'4"?
Hey Dave, always enjoy and appreciate your videos. I just had a question; are you still crapping in that bucket from the yurt series?
You waste your one question to Dave Canterbury to ask him if he craps in a bucket??
It's just a joke. If you watched all of Dave's journal of the yurt series, you would have chuckled at my comment
@@mmm0513 I wasn't aware there was a one question limit for the comments section of UA-cam videos.
If that's true I hope you're satisfied with wasting your one question asking some random guy if he was satisfied with wasting his one question on whether or not Dave is still crapping in a bucket from his yurt series.
What size pack is recommended for the basic class?
