      Yes, it seems that we are reading about the same battle over and over again for 150 years. At this point, I pity the horses more than the knights. :-)

      Cowardly Eastern Europeans though. Retreated at the crucial moment. The Burgundians took the brunt of the battle and still somehow prevailed. So bad.

    • @damianmares5338
      @damianmares5338 7 років тому +251

      Quetzalcoatl the east Europeans were thought to continuously try to persuade the burgundians to use the infantry first, so they probably thought that they did everything they could
      Plus that, the experienced soldiers in the wallachian continget were few in number, due to the victory that they recently "suffered"( even if they won the battle in 1395, they were outnumbered and they suffered horrific losses too), so it was made mostly from inexperienced men who were easy to rout( especially after they saw how the better equipped and trained burgundians knights were just trashed)
      The cavalry charge was really stupid, if only the westerners would've done as the Hungarian king adviced.....

      The Hundred years war is pretty funny, since it can be seen as the french trying over and over to find a way to make their favourite tactic work again (and succeeding, weirdly).

      @@TheFiresloth well the French succeeded when they abandoned the focus on knights and created a modern army under Charles VII, they were also precursors (in western Europe) for the use of artillery. So they had to change their favourite tactics.

      @@massaweed420 Honestly, I can easily picture a French soldier of the era to not care much about the outcome of the battle in the long run but just how his conduct would be perceived in the eyes of God. Medieval people weren't nearly as afraid of death as we are now, in fact many even looked forward to the eternal paradise.

      In the Battle of Varna the only forces coming from western Europe were an handful of Papal and Teutonic Knights. Only Poland and Hungary sent something resembling a substantial force. The same year, at the Battle of St. Jakob an der Birs, the French alone employed vs the Swiss more men than the combined Christian forces at Varna, and they were still fighting the English on another front.

Sigismund and Mircea proposed that the Wallachian infantry attack first since they had experience against the Ottomans from the previous years of fighting and the first line of the Ottoman soldiers consisted of slighty weaker troops used to tire the enemy until the Spahis joined to attacked the tired and disorganised enemy, but the French refused because they thought that they will lose the opportunity to gain honor and prestige in favour of the Wallachians

      The orthodox byzantines in the other hand also fought a lot with the early Muslim Arabs and the Muslim Seljuk Turks

      I know I'm answering this 8 month later, but this is a fairly uninformed comment. European tactics could be as effective as any other army, but it was not suited to fight experienced light horse infantry. While they might be "light",they trained their whole lives, and were incredibly effective in the suited situation. The Mongols conquered a good bit of Asia and Europe on the back of their light cavalry. Heavy European knight used to chase light infantry always end in the same way. Death. Cause they can't catch them. A wise commander knows that(Sigismund apparently) and uses his cavalry wisely.

    • @abdullahalrasheed394

      Simply because in the medieval times (and even before), Europeans followed a very different doctrine in terms of armor and how to approach enemy, where they relied on very heavy cavalry and infantry with slow manoeuvrability. Whilst the Middle Easterns (Arabs and Muslims in general) followed a completely different doctrine, they relied on light cavalry and infantry with high manoeuvrability. Each doctrine has its own flaws, so only smart leaders could utilise what they had on hand to win battles.
      You can trace these things in all the battles fought between the east and the west, from Spain (when it was under Arab's control) to the Levant.

    Wow, you guys are improving at a stellar pace. The change of narrators is really helping, and you've stopped sounding too dramatic. Keep up the good work!
    That said, I spotted two minor errors in this video: Firstly, the Knights Hospitaller's army appears to originate from Malta, which is perhaps their best-known base, but in the 1390s they were stationed on Rhodes, which they acquired in 1310 and lost in 1522. Secondly, you referred to the Hungarian capital as Budapest, but Budapest was created as a unification of Buda, Pest, and Óbuda in 1873, Buda having been the capital until then. I could see why you might want to call it Budapest just for the audience's sake, but it would only take a second to say e.g. "Buda, the Hungarian capital" instead, and it'd be more accurate!

      @Falcon now wtf are you talking about?? You now poured so much nonsense statements that I don't know where to begin. I'll just ask you this- if you as a vasal just pay ''some year tax'' and send some troops to the occupator, why to bother to free yourself and why to bother to conquer someone? Also, It is just POSSIBLE that Stefan left enough time for him to board the boat; Stefan ''saving'' Sigismund MAY be one of the causes of Stefan's later induction into the Order of the Dragon. And also this: There were disastrous consequences for the Balkan Christians after the defeat at the Battle of Nicopolis. Vidin was destroyed, Athens occupied (1397), the Despotate of Morea devastated once again, the fall of Constantinople became practically inevitable, and the area of Vuk Branković was taken by the Ottomans. Vuk Branković was captured and soon died in captivity (1397). Most of his area was transferred to the control of Stefan Lazarević, a small portion (centered in Vučitrn) was left to his wife Maria and sons (Đurađ, Grgur and Lazar), while the Ottomans retained strategic locations under their direct rule. In addition, the Ottoman forces marched into Hungary and plundered its southern parts, in particular, Zemun (which was devastated) and Sremska Mitrovica (which was burned down, and its population displaced). So you can say what you want, history told us everything, you saved them, they fucked you and that is it, nothing too glorious about that. Thank you.
