You can thank Donald Trump for all of that. The sense of time dilation that his near-constant media presence has had on us is truly alarming. The years pass without notice and yet it feels like an eternity. Most people say that time feels like it goes faster when you get older, but I can unequivocally say that the past 9 years have felt longer than my previous 23 years of life. Torturously so.

I know this is an old issue, but I stand by Apple on this issue. Conservatives clutch their guns with the fear that they will need the event of some revolution and chaos, this is how I feel about technology. In the event marginalized groups are put into a position where they need to hide and/or flee and they require the assistance of networks of people (think underground railroad) I don't think the government should be given access to this information. There is too much potential for abuse of power. It's now 2024 and we diving head first into far right fascism, how long before opponents are persecuted? Trump's plan is to deport "millions" of immigrants, how long before we are required to hand over our data to track and capture these HUMANS?

    Signs of a sociopath
    • behavior conflicting with social norms, repeatedly pushes the envelope into uncharted territory.
    • disregarding or violating the rights of others, insubordinate to any form of authority.
    • unconcerned in distinguishing between right and wrong.
    • inability to show remorse, for they have none, void of empathy.
    • tendency to lie often, repeatedly, automatically. Behaves in a risky, impulsive, dangerous manner.
    • extremely manipulative, exploits others without any care of who gets hurt.
    • no conscience or guilt, refusal to accept responsibility for their actions, claiming ownership in the success of others.

For those who think, well, sociopath doesn't sound as bad as psychopath, let's remember psychopath and sociopath are pretty much the same thing, 1 is you were born with it and the other was taught by your environment.
Anyway... this list also seems relevant:
Umberto Eco: A Practical List for Identifying Fascists
The cult of tradition. “One has only to look at the syllabus of every fascist movement to find the major traditionalist thinkers. The Nazi gnosis was nourished by traditionalist, syncretistic, occult elements.”
The rejection of modernism. “The Enlightenment, the Age of Reason, is seen as the beginning of modern depravity. In this sense, Ur-Fascism can be defined as irrationalism.”
The cult of action for action’s sale. “Action being beautiful in itself, it must be taken before, or without, any previous reflection. Thinking is a form of emasculation.”
Disagreement is treason. “The critical spirit makes distinctions, and to distinguish is a sign of modernism. In modern culture, the scientific community praises disagreement as a way to improve knowledge.”
Fear of difference. “The first appeal of a fascist or prematurely fascist movement is an appeal against the intruders. Thus Ur-Fascism is racist by definition.”
Appeal to social frustration. “[…] one of the most typical features of the historical fascism was the appeal to a frustrated middle class, a class suffering from an economic crisis or feelings of political humiliation, and frightened by the pressure of lower social groups.
The obsession with a plot. “The followers must feel besieged. The easiest way to solve the plot is the appeal to xenophobia.”
The enemy is both weak and strong. “[…] the followers must be convinced that they can overwhelm the enemies. Thus, by a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak.”
Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy. “For Ur-Fascism there is no struggle for life but, rather, life is lived for struggle.”
Contempt for the weak. “Elitism is a typical aspect of any reactionary ideology.”
Everybody is educated to become a hero. “in Ur-Fascist ideology, heroism is the norm. This cult of heroism is strictly linked with the cult of death.”
Machismo and Weaponry. “This is the origin of machismo (which implies both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality). Since even sex is a difficult game to play, the Ur-Fascist hero tends to play with weapons-doing so becomes an ersatz phallic exercise.”
Selective Populism. “There is in our future a TV or Internet populism, in which the emotional response of a selected group of citizens can be presented and accepted as the Voice of the People.
Ur-Fascism speaks Newspeak. “All the Nazi or Fascist schoolbooks made use of an impoverished vocabulary, and an elementary syntax, in order to limit the instruments for complex and critical reasoning.”

I work in tech and I don't understand why Apple couldn't do this. I also do not believe that that technically it could not be kept safely. Problem is when democracies don't respect human rights like we now see in Gaza.

It's not only that... It means that even a good person or any person who thinks that if they do this given access even if it's for the greater good to catch bad guys, it will set a dangerous path...
Regardless, I would rather have everyone have privacy for all even if it's a child predator or a murder or a terrorist... Because if any government is a democracy or not, anyone with that power to have access is bad because it will corrupt people with that power...

One year after this episode came out, Apple released the biggest security flaw ever seen on an "encrypted" device. Facial recognition. A security feature so ineffective that it can be bypassed by holding up a photo of the person who's face is programmed into the device. Or, you know, holding the phone up to the user's Instagram/Facebook/Twitter/X account displayed on a computer monitor.
