Season 0 Kaiba is nice and creepy. Also known as an affably evil villain. Season 0 Yami Yugi/Atem is a serial killer. And Season 0 Mokuba is a crime boss. Everything you know is wrong, indeed.
Fun Fact: When the original yugioh manga started out it didn't revolve around cards at all. The card game was meant to be a one time thing for one of Yami's shadow games. But fans became interested in it and wrote to Kazuki Takahashi (the creator) about it. So Takahashi decided to feature it more until eventually the series revolved around it. It was probably for the better because I really can't imagine yugioh being anywhere near as popular otherwise.
Although the card game is great, I really enjoyed Season 0 for the Shadow Games they played, and how darn dangerous the Punishment Games afterwards were. Psychologically setting a dude on fire beats any Mind Crush in my eyes.

No, that's just the Abridged version. In the original season 0, Seto and Mokuba were both kind of dicks (or more like, spoiled kids who got used to having way too much power). Yami was, er, sort of a agent of justice, but he was going about it like they did in ancient Egypt, maiming and killing people for crimes that often weren't that bad to modern standards. He learned to rein it in later when it became possible for him and Yugi to talk to each other.

So like, in season 0 Saito and Yugi’s personalities where switched? Saito was a weirdly optimistic happy child while Yugi was this like blood thirsty egomaniac? I wonder why/how they changed everything. I wonder why they went “let’s not have Yami/Yugi killing people in gambling games, and let’s make Saito a dick ham.”

No, that's just the Abridged version. In the original season 0, Seto and Mokuba were both kind of dicks (or more like, spoiled kids who got used to having way too much power). Yami was, er, sort of a agent of justice, but he was going about it like they did in ancient Egypt, maiming and killing people for crimes that often weren't that bad to modern standards. He learned to rein it in later when it became possible for him and Yugi to talk to each other.

The "But I was in the face down position!" exchange is still my favorite moment in all of Yu-gi-oh Abridged and its associated spinoffs. I still remember completely losing all control of my laugh box for a good 15 seconds.
Also, Kaiba singing "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" is genuinely creepy.
The idea of Dark Yugi as a main protagonist is actually pretty interesting for a series. A nice guy that is cowardly that also has a sociopathic but not evil inner personality play different games and gambles with different interesting games.
