- Well, you guys wanted it, so here it is. Sorry if my thoughts aren't as comprehensive as they could have been. My lack of pre-existing interest in Silent Hill: Ascension, combined with my massive disappointment despite my already low expectations, made me just want to do an off-the-cuff rant. Hopefully in some way this is useful.

Eh putting Norman Reedus in a SH game was a terrible idea. PT was a great demo but I don't think Kojima would have respected the lore. It's too confining for him. It does sound like Bloober Team made sure to collaborate with former Team Silent members

Honestly the voice acting in the original silent hill games wasn't bad to me because it was done in a way where it fit the creepy feeling of the game even though it wasn't done purposely just..Something about how they speak just fit that creepy awkward uneasy feeling which blends perfect with the game and story.
Plus the games also compensated it by having great facial animations. You could always see how a character is feeling so a lot of the voice acting lacking is made up by that. Even the originals PS1 CG cutscenes had decent facial animations. Yet a 2023 animated series makes everyone look like vax dolls.
They didn’t have *bad* voice acting, they had *stilted* voice acting. In most contexts stilted acting would be bad, but in the context of a psychological horror game like silent hill, it’s just genuinely unsettling

yep. Up to 4, the games have this dream like quality to them, and the unconventional voice acting genuinely adds to it. And honestly, if you've ever been in extreme psychological distress for prolonged periods of time, not a mere spiked emotional reaction that lasts a few moments more than a jump scare, you know people don't sound "normal" anymore. You start disconnecting and compartmentalizing to cope, you're seldom whole, and the way you speak reflects that. So it honestly tracks.
Watching Max go from sceptically optimistic to a level of pessimism only 1 inch from the bottom, is simultaneously scary and joyful. Konami truly deserves every ounce of backlash they could possibly get.

Dead space got a remake and literally hit the mark head-on; If they can pull that off then Konami better do the same with their upcoming remake of 2.

Today's after show of team members constantly saying they worked with Konami on the project and all I can ask is, who tf did they talk to??? The receptionist desk? The original team that made SH left years ago lol

I couldn't agree more Max. I honestly can't say I even want to see this project through to the end. After playing Alan Wake 2, the new Silent Hill titles need to be more than just competent horror games. I've voiced my distaste for Bloober Team before, and hope both them and Konami recognize how much is riding on the success of the remake.
Remedy could have made an amazing SH game, but they are an actual AAA studio so Konami would never write that paycheck. They'd rather cheap out and hand their IP to a mediocre developer who has never made a good game.
Funny you say this when AW2 is so disrespectful with the first game and on its own both dull and underwhelming.

@@canaldecastaI agree. It seems people either love or hate AW2. I'm 8 hours in, and mostly it's been boring walk here, now walk there. Not much gameplay. Some laughably bad writing here and there. But yet, I do find something compelling enough about it that I keep playing and kind of enjoy it, despite it's flaws. Never would I think of giving it a 9/10 or 10/10. 7 maybe.
Also, The Bunker is awesome. I didn't even like the first Amnesia, but I loved The Bunker.
@@balthazor44if you enjoy the weirdness of Remedy Alan Wake II is excellent. If not it is a bit of a slog with overbearing writing. It is a piece of post modern fiction and if that isn't a genre one enjoys stay away.
I looooove the idea of group interaction, the fact that they made it a pay to play is absolutely horrible, they took a creative idea, and absolutely ruined it by driving for it through the backdrop and lense of greed. Its terrible that you have to PAY and you may still not even get the decision that triggers the next event that you wanted, in essence paying to NOT get what you want from the group vote... 😂😂 thats so incredibly ridiculous

I’d also like to add that the most promising of the upcoming games is townfall. I think the developers of observation probably have the best chance of following the silent hill theme here. So if that game gets canceled because of Konami’s incompetence, I’m going to be pretty upset.
They really need to take note of capcoms success with revitalizing the Resident Evil franchise.

There was a fan-made short series AGES ago that I watched called "Silent Hill No Escape", I'm pretty sure it's still up on YT, but damn, at the time (when I was still in middle school), that series scared the absolute hell outta me, and I LOVE it because it fit so well in the SH universe!
Thank Max for voicing our frustrations about these new "horror" titles and I hope you cover this fan-made series/film to give it some attention and love for the rest of the community to find!!

With a guy like you supporting a good narrative writer (I'm thinking Critical Drinker), getting some good, motivated programmers and artists, and the necessary resources, such a project could white glove slap all these coattail riders and wannabes leaching off Silent Hill's legacy, not to mention the greedy Konami.

Imagine the state of mind the people behind this blasphemy must have been in. Being so delusional to think they're doing great work, high-fiving each other over their ill-conceived ideas... these people frighten me more than anything they could ever come up with.
The sad truth is that I doubt the dev team was high-fiving each other at any point. Ascension feels like a project designed with corporate goals in mind, and a development team tasked with delivering some semblance of a product that meets those goals. They did the job, but I doubt there was much joy in it.

I've been wanting to share some thoughts on Ascension but, in all honesty, I feel nauseous from the overwhelming amount of distractions (prompts, buttons, items, unlocks, videos, chat boxes, things & stuff...) even on the first few pages. That isn't me being dramatic, I genuinely feel uncomfortable when I open Ascension and I can't properly even begin trying to enjoy what's there. I end up closing it altogether within minutes.
I love Silent Hill for it's nuanced story telling and carefully layered designs. Even the main menus of the first 8 Silent Hill games were all quite charming, despite their dark and dingy feel. But this... there is absolutely nothing that grips me - and that's just the menus.
They could have marketed this in the last 12 months and gathered crowd feedback from simple promotional materials... instead they wait until release to find what's wrong. A poor start to this revival campaign from Konami.
I'll continue sharing what I love most about Silent Hill and remain hopeful for the other projects. Take care man.

There's good-bad, like Tommy Wiseau's "The Room". There's bad-bad, like Silent Hill: Downpour. Then there's shit-bad, which this epitomizes.
Downpour was a good concept executed poorly, but still had its moments. Same for Honecoming. But this... I have no words for this.
Downpour wasn't that bad. B4 this I would say Homecoming was the worst in the series. I'm including all the PSP titles as well. Silent Hill The Room was great imo idky it gets so much hate. 2 was by far the best in the series. 2,3,1,4 , Origins, Downpour, Shattered Memories, Homecoming, Book of Memories , SH Arcade, and Ascension from best to worst in the Silent Hill Universe. I'm obsessed with Silent Hill. My entire Sleeve is SH characters Huge Pyramid Head tattoo as the main focus. Absolutely love this world and I'm super disappointed in this. They can fix it if there's a season 2 and they tweek alot of things. The concept is cool it's just poorly executed and it's missing one of the most important things THE SOUNDTRACK!!! The creepy music and sound effects suck you right into that world and this desperately needs that. Hopefully they don't cancel the other games now because judging from the trailers they look awesome. But who knows those idiots cancelled Silent Hills and that was definitely going to be great. Kojima and Del Torro. Such horrible decisions Konami has made. Went from the best games in the world to a sloppy mess real quick. Now we will never get a new Metal Gear and knowing them we will be lucky if SH continues now. Sorry about the rant just frustrated
I like the base idea of it. An interactive silent hill series which the player can effectively create the future of the franchise is a amazing idea. The problem is alot of the experience itself is garbage

I just replayed the first game from start to finish and even that game had more emotionally responsive characters. It’s always ironic seeing developers with more tools than ever somehow make a character less emotionally responsive or believable. Imagine some guy play testing that and being like “Yeah Greenlight this shit”

Something I'm struggling with is the amount of characters they shoved in here, or at least that's how the footage I've seen seems to indicate. You remember in the older games there was only a small cast of characters, heightening their isolation in the nightmarish inversion of reality they found themselves in. Even if SH 4 (my personal favourite) had more the previous iterations, they were mostly alluded to in a past tense, and if they made an appearance it was often in their ghostly post-death form at the hands of Sullivan. Ascension seems to have a billion indistinct and unmemorable characters.
I'm unironically of the opinion that we should let Silent Hill die at this point. It was a good thing while it lasted.

The entire premise of Silent Hill is about inner demons and fighting off or giving in to despair. With that in mind, Silent Hill doesn't have to be a real place, it doesn't have to have real people. It only has to have a compelling story and the will to carry out said story. A story about memories and loss. The suits in charge keep hiring writers that have no investment in carrying on the legacy and it shows. 🤦♂
Woah, i have to say, i was not expecting this video to be so emotional. I see you as mostly calm and collected in your videos, but this one being so emotional really makes me understand the impact this had on you, unlike any of the lines from this SH

Downpour and Homecoming are masterpieces compared to this. Maybe i treated them too harshly....
I still dislike Homecoming the most but after watching this crap Homecoming is now a masterpiece (I still consider it the worst game of the main timeline games).
The metal gear analogy is even worse than you think because, although they said the next-gen versions were going to be 1080p, according to digital foundry, they're actually 720p. They couldnt even be bothered to upscale the resolution to what they said they would.
The one-two punch of Ascension being what it is and the MGS Master Collection being what it is has shown me that Konami is not willing to put the effort in.
I can't wait for 4chan to rig the cameo system and make half the characters into the "Pool's Closed" man.
As someone who ranks silent hill 2 and 3 as my #1 and #2 favorite horror games of all time, and who has written off the intellectual property since The Room, i have been having a good laugh. I get why people desire to have high hopes for the franchise, but i learned long ago that there was no point in putting any faith in what konami or these developers do to the franchise. I just wish people learned to not put hope into such things, as the industry as a whole (not just konami) has shown us its wise not to.

Ascension looks like some guys watched SH2 footage, thought the dreamlike performances were just randomly offputting, and thought AI tools would replicate that perfectly.

I was trying ot be optimistic about Ascension untill it released. Seeing how it ended up, it just makes me sad... Honestly, just yesterday I finished Signalis and boy oh boy is that a great silent hill game. Its really sad when fans can put out a better homage to a series than a new official sequel can. I still have high hobes for 2 remake and F but who knows how they will turn out. Still have my hopes up. We will see. Thanks for your video.

The desperation of the developer on the second or third day as he explained how these cut scenes are basically being rushed to come out daily was hard to watch. Also, knowing this is going to be daily for 8 months makes me feel for the animation team 😫
Ooof...I was excited about this interactive experiment, but having "played" for two days, I'm already tapped out. I just finished AW2 and want to replay it already. It just stays with you. Lake and co clearly understand how to capture the gamers.

And here we are. Where I knew we were headed and would eventually end up. The same place we ended up back in 2006 with Silent Hill 0rigins. Yet I was labeled a "toxic fan" when I said that this franchise needed to STAY DEAD and bringing it "back" was a waste of time. Because all that is being brought back is a name brand. What Silent Hill was died A LONG TIME AGO. The original Silent Hill games(the real ones) were a chance occurrence. They happened at the right time, with the right technology, with the right people at the right times in their lives. The design philosophy that made Silent Hill what it was no longer exists and hasn't for decades because of the advancement of technology, consumer expectations etc. The people who made Silent Hill what it was aren't even really in game design anymore. Hiroyuki Owaku(one of the main writers) apparently left the gaming industry some time ago, and Takayoshi Sato is at Nintendo applying his talents to developmental simulations. So without the actual minds who made Silent Hill what it was....all you're doing is bringing back a brand name and hiring people to make "horror game" with only surface level relation to the source material

The more of these western train wreck, misunderstandings of the franchise we get, the more Silent Hill's legacy is buried and warped. It now has more terrible games than great ones. And in 10 years when you google "Silent Hill" in the search tab... Townsfall, Ascension, Revelations etc will pop up. Silent Hill is slowly turning into the Alone in the Dark franchise. A franchise that's acknowledged for what it once did decades ago for the genre in terms of innovation, but hasn't been "great" in long time.
Honestly my fucking pipe dream would be for konami's gaming division to get so bankrupt that they have to sell it off and then Capcom buys all their IPs and sends the Resident Evil. 2 and Resident Evil 4 Remake team onto the first S Yeah ilent Hill game.
I never had any hope for this Silent Hill revival. It just puts the series back to the state it was in after SH4, which wasn't all that great back then either.

Playing a bunch of baldurs gate 3 then seeing footage of this is staggering. Really brings home how immaculately directed and preformed BG3's scenes are

It's kinda obscene how many IP's have been picked up and taken over by people who either don't care about the franchise, or whose only motivation is greed.

I actually applied to Bad Robot as a writer and was rejected. When I saw the trailer for this game I thought “wow talk about commoditizing mental illness.” I’m actually planning on rewriting and re-editing the trailer with dialogue that is actually true to the franchise and then sending it to them as a gift. I’ll be posting it to my channel if you’re interested.

Bloober Team is guaranteed to have quality sound design, graphics and music. Furthermore they've gone out of their way to collaborate with former Team Silent devs. I've met some of the guys and trust me they love the IP. They hired a bunch of combat & AI devs solely for this project.
I know everyone is apprehensive but I am looking forward to their product.

Hey so this has nothing to do with this video in particular, but I just want to say you've had a pretty profound effect on me and my mind. You've rekindled old interests and kindled new ones.
I noticed this especially yesterday, when I had a dream with surprisingly deep Jungian and alchemical themes. For that shit to show up in my dreams, _even if I haven't watched a video of yours regarding either in several weeks,_ means it's been chiseled into my mind pretty permanently.
I won't go into the dream itself here, partly because people usually don't enjoy listening to others explaining their dreams, but also because it contains some uhm... rather sexual elements (y'all ever have a romantic relationship with your sleep paralysis demon? Hell of a night...) But thank you for your videos either way. They've been very enjoyable and enlightening. And they've clearly made their mark on me.
