The commercials from ballot question one in Massachusetts in the year 2020 were despicable. None of those commercials stayed up online after the ballot question was over. I archived a few of them on my channel last year in a video dedicated to them. I think of more people knew that Ford, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and general motors, made a concerted effort to convince the public that independent mechanics being able to do their job would lead to them being assaulted and beaten in a parking lot, that they would be more pushback against these companies. Some of them are iconic American brands, proudly owned by people who value freedom and put American flags on the bumper of their F150 or Silverado while the company they gave money to lobbies against their ability to choose who fixes their car. They put millions of dollars into brainwashing campaigns to scare people out of allowing others to fix what they own. People who buy them think they represent freedom, without realizing that this was from a bygone era... they USED to represent freedom & American values. It is sad how such amazing companies are now shadows of their former selves. :(

im a mechanic, i have worked for these companies, they have been trying to make this a reality for years, im in the fight for right to repair, i didn't go into this trade to be part of a monopoly , i did it because my best memories are late nights in the garage getting Bradon's dirt bike running for the first time, late nights till 3 am swapping motor because its not a passion or a hobby or even a career to me, its an obsession i think about these machines and how they work as i fall asleep at night, i constantly tell my friends to learn at least how to do oil changes, rotate your tires, put on your winters your self. my uncle's first vehicle was a van with a blown engine, he swapped it in my grand mothers drive way, only took him a weekend to learn how to and do it, now to swap the head light bulb on my chevy traverse i need to open up the wheel well and reach on in till i got to the bulb, this is not how it should be, people should be able and encouraged to fix there own machines, its what made me want to be a mechanic, every one should be able to as well.
i agree with what your saying and get where your coming from. I am a technician as well for the past 16 years. I do agree that you should have a right to repair. But i think you should have to show a valid mechanic license if you want to purchase Safety related parts over the counter. I have seen some seriously hacked suspension and brakes installed poorly, not tightened or just as simple as the brake calipers being twisted up. I think when it comes to safety related items, Brakes, steering and suspension components, Seat belts, air bags ECT, these parts should only be purchased from Licensed techs and installed by a licensed tech. Hell most places you cant do any major upgrades to your property without a building permit, and even industrial electrical components cant be purchased without a electrician license at least here in Canada anyway

Because I am a Tuner and us Tuners have basically been saying this for the last decade. Tuning has basically been legislated out existence in most of the world and the few places it hasn't it is about to and no one cared. In fact the car community supported these anti tuner laws because "the environment though" and we tried to warn them that the restriction of customers to mod their vehicles could be used to stop them from repairing their vehicles. They didn't want to listen and they called me a conspiracy theorist and what do you know the exact thing I said would happen is happening. If you don't support the right of tuners to do to their car what they want then I don't support your right to fix your car.
It's supposed to be for anything a consumer can buy. Most people will get locked in by the tech, but having a choice to go to the local garage instead of the dealer means huge $$ savings for the consumer. If it can get traction, you won't have to buy another smart phone in 2 years when the battery dies but the electronics are still good. By extension, if the car companies get what they want, they can pressure a continual buying cycle when the person comes in for service and the vehicle is nearing the end of warranty, but still a good vehicle not needing replacement. a smart way that suzuki does it and many other manufacturers to make people do the service at a brand shop is by offering extended rust guarantee and free road side assistance if you service your car through them. by giving people the option to go to any shop but also giving them a reason to go for the more expensive one which is the brand specific one will they ensure that people come back with their cars whilst still keeping people happy and keeping people buying their cars. As a professional technician, I'm split 50/50 on this topic. I personally believe that each company has the right to protect their intellectual properties (IPs), but when a computer is required to complete a brake job, I find that to be ridiculous. On the flip side, I 100% agree that customers should not touch some parts of the car for safety. The biggest example would be high voltage components on hybrids and EVs. Even factory trained technicians need to be certified before even they're allowed to work on high voltage.
Actually Porsche doesn’t even let trained third party service people touch the high voltage. Porsche trucks someone down to the shop to do the high voltage part. Tesla doesn’t care as long as you get their training. EV high voltage is nothing to play around with.
We need to implement a law stating exactly this : Any and ALL technology or developments, future or present, must be available and able to be repaired by an average person. all manufacturers must PROVIDE the items and know how needed to repair any and all technology that they create, to any repair technician or specialist, whether official or unofficial, that requests it. Else be punished with a tax of 100% of any and all GROSS income gained from the sale of said technology and all products that utilize the technology.
I think you're using able instead of access. If I'm a dumbass and can't learn anything, it's not the responsibility of the company to make sure I am ABLE to fix it. I am entitled to the access of the device and knowhow to fix it.
So, all proprietary software should be made accessible to the public? The source code for the operating system on your computer/phone should be public info for all the hackers in the world to see?

As a professional Auot Mechanic since 1978 I have watched the evolution of this whole thing. Gone are the days that anyone could repair their car or truck, even if the manufactures are forced to have everything thing open sourced the cost of owning diagnostic equipment will keep most individuals from making repairs at home. It also causes independant shops to struggle because the techknowlogy changes every year with updates etc... Gone is the simple ODBII sytems when a small handheld code reader was effetive and scanners are not cheap especially when they need to be updated periodically. Everything is considered a module including the radio in your dash that if change out you have to take it to the dealer to have it programmed it has to read and reconize the VIN of the vehilce you are installing it in, the manufactures claim it is a security feature. I could go on and on but you get the picture. Oh one other thing is when you take something to the dealer their labor rates are astronomical, around $250 per hour.
Dealership labor rates vary from shop to shop. The shop I currently work at is $155/hr. The last shop I worked at was $120/hr. Both shops waive the diagnostic fee if you approve repairs. At one point, GM actually had their anti-theft system built into their radios. The likelihood of every system in a car going open source is nill. A lot of the "infotainment" systems are developed using QNX. QNX is not open source software and is copyrighted. Best case, you'd get the UX moved to open source. You would completely cease innovation in every industry by forcing QNX to be made open source. Also, making automotive firmware open source, risks irreparable damage to vehicles. Most of that code is written in ASM and is useless to the average person.

It's exploitation, plain and simple.
I just did a bunch of maintenance work on my '05 Mini a couple weekends ago. Supercharger, water pump, bunch of other things. Was definitely a heap of work I had put on myself, and there were points where I second guessed as to whether I made the right choice in repairing it myself. 4 days, and an extra 5 quarts of oil later, I was finished, and could NOT have been more satisfied with how I had done. It was the payoff I had been looking forward to, to see and hear my car run better than when I had started. Right to Repair doesn't have to be just protection for people's livelihoods, it also protects our passion for our vehicles and making them our own!

Thanks for putting this video out. People are starting to see this creep (legally) into other topics that they care about (I'm shocked that not everyone is a gearhead too), and I have to remind them where it started and how far back the precedents go.
The people who get hit the hardest by this are the technicians. Everything gets harder, you need more tools, more training, more work, and of course less pay. #technicianslivesmatter
These are some of the true reasons I like classic cars. Classic cars are so much easier to work on. I remember this when I think on how Cadillac had made changing the oil so complex that my Dad who is a gearhead couldn't even change it. That was the last caddie they bought.
Rich Rebuild? You mean the guy who forged Tesla receipts, making it seem like a new battery would cost over $20,000, and then charged someone half the cost of a brand new battery to replace two cells on an 8 year old battery? That Rich Rebuilds? Yeah, he’s such a hero.
Auto manufacturers don't want you or I driving our cars past warranty. They want their "product" to last right up until the very end of it and not any longer than necessary - they want you to buy a new car to makes things all better.
It's great to know that all of car UA-cam is getting together and fighting for this issue. Not allowing someone to fix their own vehicles will just create waste.

Yea I was a little offended when these guys “claimed a victory of the fight” when they did no legal work and make this after the fight is basically over and won.
im a mechanic, i have worked for these companies, they have been trying to make this a reality for years, im in the fight for right to repair, i didn't go into this trade to be part of a monopoly , i did it because my best memories are late nights in the garage getting Bradon's dirt bike running for the first time, late nights till 3 am swapping motor because its not a passion or a hobby or even a career to me, its an obsession i think about these machines and how they work as i fall asleep at night, i constantly tell my friends to learn at least how to do oil changes, rotate your tires, put on your winters your self. my uncle's first vehicle was a van with a blown engine, he swapped it in my grand mothers drive way, only took him a weekend to learn how to and do it, now to swap the head light bulb on my chevy traverse i need to open up the wheel well and reach on in till i got to the bulb, this is not how it should be, people should be able and encouraged to fix there own machines, its what made me want to be a mechanic, every one should be able to as well.
Yessssss
amen
You’re the kind of mechanic 👨🔧 I look up too.
👍👍
i agree with what your saying and get where your coming from.

As a Masshole I can tell you firsthand, the "vote no on 1" ads from last year fighting right to repair were so horrendously aggressive and misleading. One of them even had some guy saying he owned a repair shop (yet he didn't name his shop, I wonder why 🙄) and he was advocating no on 1. I think that was in response to one of the yes 1 ads which had a person who actually owned a small repair shop in Leominster. My own local mechanic also had yes on 1 signs in front of his shop.
I also work for a big car dealership chain (ironic), and the president of the company sent out an email to all of us saying we should vote no on 1. I legit took offense to that, such a load of crap.
By extension, if the car companies get what they want, they can pressure a continual buying cycle when the person comes in for service and the vehicle is nearing the end of warranty, but still a good vehicle not needing replacement.

a smart way that suzuki does it and many other manufacturers to make people do the service at a brand shop is by offering extended rust guarantee and free road side assistance if you service your car through them. by giving people the option to go to any shop but also giving them a reason to go for the more expensive one which is the brand specific one will they ensure that people come back with their cars whilst still keeping people happy and keeping people buying their cars. a service at a local small shop is 30% cheaper than at the local suzuki dealer, but since I live in an area where roads are actively salted all winter which leads to rust have I done the choice that I will service my car at the suzuki shop and do the repairs that isn't service at a local shop. Cars in the future are basically going to be SaaS products in which you pay an upfront cost and pay on-top for monthly updates and upgrades. If you don't stay in their ecosystem your warranty will be voided and you will not receive the afore - mentioned updates. This will happen with all manufactures who wish to stay in the game and it is just one more step into the world becoming a technocracy which is not a good thing.
"legeslation is often decades behind"

Need to get some bribes first to stall in for a decade.
Remember when car companies actually believed in making reliable cars that would last forever? And they also loved that people could work on their cars freely? Now they struggle to give you a 3 year warranty and actually hate you for working on the car that you bought.
Wait for electric cars. Their batteries cost 85% of the car's value, and last for 7-9 years max. But they are supposed to be more "Eco Friendly". I call bullshit.

There's no way existing dealerships can keep up with their own repair/service ideology. Too many cars. Right now it takes a month to get an appointment for simple repairs at some dealerships and it will only get worse if they don't begin sharing repair info with owners and independent shops. Only the car owner suffers...
I truly believe they're shooting themselves in the foot. It would only take one car company to come out and promote self-repair and they would dominate. If the company's keep going this way it's just going to raise the value of our old Honda's lol.

they would NOT dominate, not for a long time at least. The right to repair is something that only concerns the used car market, on top of that, removing exclusive rights from your cars only means losing money to other people. A car manufacturer gets no benefit from allowing this. Good to see an automotive UA-cam channel with a large following shining a light on RtR. Many people have no idea how manufacturers in many fields are actively trying and succeeding in monopolizing the repair industry. The strangle hold on the repair industry includes cars, consumer electronics, medical and military equipment, McDonald's ice cream machines, and ect. You may not care about RtR or understand why it's an issue, but there is a guarantee that something that effects you or that you care about is being produced with the philosophy that you will own nothing and be happy.
The crossover I've been wanting finally happened!
Also I'm surprised Scotty Kilmer isn't talking about Right to Repair.
It is very good to be on his channel and this channel too.
If One channel misses something , the other channel picks it up.

We need to implement a law stating exactly this :
Any and ALL technology or developments, future or present, must be available and able to be repaired by an average person. all manufacturers must PROVIDE the items and know how needed to repair any and all technology that they create, to any repair technician or specialist, whether official or unofficial, that requests it.

I love the emphasis when he annunciated “con” nectivity (6:57) I believe he subconsciously said it that way because he was describing the manufacturers ability to communicate.
Yeah because Car brands are incredibly greedy
Almost every company is in for the money hell ever company just want MONEH

Reason why companies are so greedy now is because of shareholders running the company and demanding higher returns each year and expect to see nothing but green. It's sad.

I started getting pissed off about this when I realized that my VW doesn't have a fusebox diagram on any manual and it was impossible to find one online, so I had to basically check every sigle fuse in my car to find the broken one, absolutely ridiculous
The thing that blows my mind the most about VW is that on some vehicles you need to buy a specialty tool to take the oil drain plug out and a different one for the oil filter. Ridiculous
@@xabhax yes, I actually found diagrams online, but my car was one of the last built before a facelift/restyle and has the fuse box of the new one, which made everything more confusing. Finally found the correct diagram by looking at cars form Seat and Skoda built on the same platform. My brother's BMW has a diagram comfortably and practically placed on the fuse box lid, why VW can't do the same? Buying a full on service manual or going to the dealer to change a single fuse is a tad overkill and shouldn't be needed in my opinion.
