18:49 Man that killed it. Thank you so much for covering this. This was beautiful.
I completely get that lots of people consider youtube their profession, and their job - and rightfully so, you all do amazing work. and that making a video like this can make it more difficult to get access to products or early looks at products into the future, given almost every company has a very anti-right to repair stance. I can't tell you how much I appreciate you putting your living on the line to talk about this. I hope others appreciate it too.

As far as John Deere goes, a friend of mine had an issue related to the electronic control system, ecu, pcm, whatever you want to call it. JD gave him such a hard time that he came to me and had me build an open source ecu to control the entire tractor (Speeduino based). It gave him complete control over every aspect of that damn thing and JD is not happy. Now his warranty was just about up and doing something like this will void your warranty, but if done right takes the piss outta some of these companies

@@willissudweeks1050 so instead of asking me how this whole deal works, and maybe taking back control of the machine I'm assuming you bought, from a company like John Deere that is actively screwing you over, you decided to give me shit. I posted that comment as an anecdote that might show people in these situations, that there are ways to get around these companies blocking you from fixing - modifying- or doing whatever the hell you want with your property. These bespoke computer systems, embedded software, systems etc... are just control systems that can be replicated. The automotive aftermarket has been doing this forever with standalone computers to control engines, transmissions, and even modern vehicle LAN systems. These allow people to ditch restrictive or feature poor factory units for something more advanced that gives the user access and control over every system from fuel to emissions controls. I understand how frustrating what these manufacturers are doing is which is why I learned how to get around it. I'm not a genius I just knew there was more than one way to skin This particular cat, plus I'm not rich.

True, although if I was already a multimillionaire (heck, even one million would do), I'd do the same thing. It could potentially hurt me economically, but my life is already economically set, so why wouldn't I do what's actually important?
Plus this will not really bring Marques' channel down or his viewed down. The worst it could do is to not get him even more views/money, for some videos when there's an unique new device, but when you make probably tens of thousands of dollars monthly, there's no real reason to make even more while not speaking up about truly important things. Because if someone in his position did that, sacrifice his integrity for even more money - that would indicate a pathology, a pathological relationship with money, I think (today even billionaires always want more, and this is just sick, literally sick).

      2) it's safer when manufacturer does it.
And I have answers to those:
      1) so sell those parts in your official store, Apple

Let's take Apple again as an example, they run their own repairs, they don't let others buy there components (like screens),
Now it kinda narrows the user down to two options,
      - repair phone which is super expensive
      - buy new phone, even though it's only a Yr old - that new iPhone has all those xyz shiny features
Apples interest to charge those extortionate prices is to force users into buying a new phone

Marques, thanks for bringing this up. Maybe 1,5 yes ago I cracked a pixel 3a, but found it hard to find replacement parts. I considered looking for on eBay etc for comparable parts to replace at home, but felt concerned about quality & reliability etc. I live on the Dutch side of the border but had bought the pixel 3a at a German Mediamarket nearby where it was on sale, incl insurance. I took the phone in to get fixed and didn't hear back for a week. The call centre is all the way across the country in Berlin and it was "impossible to transfer me" but would make sure to call me back asap. I never got that call, but have continually called Mediamarket and the insurance company (who claim the phone is with the shop), and I have driven the 45 mins to the facility (when cross border & other COVID restrictions allowed) where they told me the phone is with the insurance company but that someone would call me the next work day "even I drop dead". All delays have been blamed on waiting for a shipment on parts. Maybe this ties in to the right to repair. Either way, I have been left with suspicion for insurance and the feeling that the whole system is rigged to rip people off. Is there anything I could have done?

Sry this is long and idk if marques will ever see this but I think it's weird that, if it really was this hard to get parts on a not old phone, that pixel bears some responsibility there, and that Mediamarket should not be offering insurance and accepting phone's for repair that they know they don't have parts for, especially without telling me it would take that long

I too agree that we need to have Right to Repair, because first at all we still Buy the products and not Rent the products.
Repairing your stuff isn't something bad, we will have less waste around. But the problem with repair is that many companies are pushing high prices for the parts, I have seen a lot of waste because for many people is easier and cheaper to Buy a new thing instead to Repair it. I think the stuff around us should me more accessible and easier to maintain, right of repair is a right of someone's personal choice. Also right of repair should be a more moral question, If we repair something is that going to be safe and good for the others around, for the people, nature, etc.
I'm very very glad because many started to talk about this 😀 I and I love how Marques and Louis talk open about this questions 👍👍👍

Right to repair doesn't mean that you have to fix the device. If you feel you cannot do it safely then you should be able to get it repaired by someone else. Unfortunately companies don't want those people to fix it for you because they want to sell you a new device, so they make parts expensive and difficult to get.

@@Tom_Stevens617 no my friend, they bar companies from getting a $5 part to independent repair companies and charge users $1500 to repair the same problem. When Linus wanted to get a replacement motherboard from Apple, they would only sell him a motherboard with CPU + RAM even though those were socketed and there was no need to sell those together as that were not damaged. He also had to pay $4000 for 3 parts when the device costs around $5000. The bill of materials cost of a device is not 4/5th of the cost of the device. I am not pointing out a particular manufacturer, just pointing out real world examples. Also another one, a company would not sell a $500 motor on an operating bed, did not allow the manufacturer of the motor to sell it directly to the hospital, but instead forced them to buy a new $10,000 operating bed.

"When you buy something, do you own it?"
If companies had their way, _everything would be a rental subscription._
You don't need to look at the obvious suspects of Apple and John Deere. Look at Microsoft Office or G Suite. Look at everything made by Adobe or Autodesk. Look at every game publisher (except GOG) and every game console. _Your ability to use the product is ultimately up to the whim of the company._ There is a reason why tech pushed "as a service" nonsense HARD.
Think about it, why would you spend money to innovate ever again if you can just extract rent for services people find essential and if you can simply force them to upgrade to a less functional product just to eliminate the competitors?

Right, but Apple, John Deere, medical equipment manufacturers, etc., prevent you from buying replacement parts from their suppliers, even if they designed the product to be repairable... So only the manufacturer can repair the device even if it's easy to do!
Separately from the hardware design, manufacturers are using software to ensure that you can't replace parts by, say, taking a part off of an old tractor and putting into your broken tractor!! The only reason this isn't the case with (gasoline) cars is because it's illegal.
And it's not like we are asking companies to publish source code... Just don't make the software reject replacement parts!! Or release a premade software tool that allows you to enable the replacement part/calibrate it.

I can relate. I'm still rocking my about to be 8 years old Samsung Galaxy S4. Last software update was Lollipop (v1.5) in 2016 but it still runs all the apps I need (browser, mail, music, UA-cam, miscellanious stuff) cause I don't care about games or waiting one second versus ten for an app to open (I know a custom rom could fix the last part but like I said, I don't care). I plan on using it as long as it's litterally falling apart, but since that process has already started a while back, I too am looking for new phones occasionally and while many intruige me from a technical perspective (crazy good cameras, 128GB+ storage, etc.) I haven't found one that has a decent price (the S4 was a flagship back then and I bought it new for 400 bucks, I don't see why it should be thrice as much now) and complies with my believes in sustainabilty and longevity.
I highly doubt that any modern phone would still hold up in 8 years like my old S4 does. It went through two batteries and lost it's power button because it malfunctioned and I had to remove it. These are little to no concern because it uses standard Phillips screws and no adhesive whatsoever, but good luck not screwing anything up and damaging a phone more attempting to do these things on a new phone.
There is one manufactorer that does indeed check all the boxes for me. That's the Fairphone. Repairability with every part being purchasable from the manufactorer, easy to remove battery, ethical sourcing for precious metals (no child labor and funding basic human rights violations in 3rd world countries). But the downside is that one can hardly call the latest phone a new phone with it's specs. Even for my old S4 it wouldn't be much of an upgrade.
I really hope that something good comes out of this, I'm tired of coorperations (not just tech ones) locking out the customer more and more until they only have to sell to mindless consumers, instead of having to deal with acual customers.

I agree with a lot of what you said. Here are my thoughts on the matter.
Regarding the hazards of taking things apart; Yes it is "dangerous" to take electrical things apart, especially if it contains large capacitors that can store a lot of current. This is especially important when working on a power supply. The quick fix is having some basic information about electronics and the right tools.
A person new to repairing could then read about how to safely discharge large capacitors and then it's perfectly safe to work with (when not plugged in a wall outlet). But here is the beauty of right to repair. If more people were more used to repairing their own equipment, they would share it freely on social media or other online platforms.
Books are also a good source when it comes to repairing electrical devices.
Tools are very cheap now and a lot of devices use SMD components that are soldered with hot air.
It's do-able but takes practice to it yourself.
I wish I could repair my own devices easier because I think I already create too much e-waste as things are now.
It's so expensive to get parts that it's easier to just buy a new phone and it's sad.
My dad's old computer was 25 years old when he retired it, and it was still working at that time.
Now you can barely have any electrical device last more than 5 years. It can't be good for the environment.
I think it's also up to us to settle with having an older phone model and not the latest tech all the time. The device is still serving a purpose.
I dabbled with repairing my own things and sometimes I manage to fix it. I fixed my 10 year old television that was still going strong. I managed to fix it with the help of russian UA-cam videos that was translated on the fly and I had enough information to repair my TV to a working state. I eventually replaced it but just repairing it added at least 2 years of it's life span. I took to a communal garbage disposal facility so it's taken apart and exposed of properly in a safely manner.
Try to repair things before throwing them away is not only fun, but good for the environment. You are learning a new skill! What's not to love c'mon?!

I have a 2015 MacBook Pro with the swollen battery. Apple is asking me $269 for the battery replacement or $250 for trading value. Changing a battery should be so simple but no one is telling me which OEM or Genuine battery to buy. Changing the battery yourself has also become so difficult. There is no reason to glue up the battery in the laptop. Really frustrating.
