I think you would love Devin Townsend - "Hear Me" by 66Samus. Sam is a fantastic drummer and would be right up your alley. Fun fact: Sam was actually the studio drummer for Hear Me. Devin and Sam recently did a "live" show on youtube where they played a handful of songs. I recommend those as well. While I have ya here, I also recommend watching either the drum cam or official live video for Pale Blue Dot by Dream Theater. Mike Mangini is the drummer that replaced Mike Portnoy about 10 years ago. It's always a pretty heated topic talking about which mike is better and what not but I love them both and think they're both among the best drummers alive today.
I don't think you mentioned it specifically, but Sam released a drum playthrough of the song Hear Me on his UA-cam channel, 66Samus. I know he'd lose his mind over that drum performance.
Devin Townsend has always been very much a musician's musician. He really defies genre conventions and is ever evolving making him a very interesting person to follow musically from both his projects he's involved with directly from a writing perspective and artists he chooses to collaborate with from a production standpoint. He's also extremely funny and some of his projects really let that sense of humor through. Great reaction as always
Devin's latest album, "Empath", came out last year as a solo effort. He used three different drummers for different parts throughout the album. Anup, whom you just saw. Sam Paulicelli aka "66Samus" played some of the heavier parts, and Morgan Agren was the third drummer. Devin's back catalogue is an absolute treasure trove of music of countless genres. Ambient/chill, prog/prog metal, extreme metal, country, new age, contemporary metal, hard rock, musical theatre, and everything in between can be heard in his music. Welcome to the rabbit hole!
Really enjoyed that. Both the music and the drumming were exceptional. The bonus was to see someone drumming with that much energy, skill and real joy.

Devin Townsend in this album had some guests in the album, like 66samus, Anup Sastry and also the "god" Morgan Ågren (which is a Devin friend also) . Devin Townsend albums are very diverse. Also some musics are technical other more extreme or an organized chaos. You should listen, it would surprise You. Devin is awesome!
Devin Townsend is a progressive heavy metal artist. This is the drummer who recorded this particular song for the album, however Devin works with multiple musicians - the album Empath features 3 different drummers.
Gene Hoglan (you checked him out already with the band Death) was the drummer for Devin's previous band Strapping Young Lad, his solo career though is wild! He goes from country, to atmospheric, opera/musical (He has two concept albums about a character named Ziltoid which they have done live musicals for) to just crazy epic/heavy stuff. Like Rush, this is a Canadian worm hole of genre melting. I highly recommend you to watch Devin's guitar/vocal performance on EMG tv for the song Kingdom.

dev townsend is a master. Great guitarist, a marvellous vocalist and a incredible producer, compositer. he is not from this earth, his brain..., man, it's incredible
Andrew, you should definitely just go check out the album this is from - Empath. It'll pretty much answer all your questions about Devin Townsend, as it's got a good mixture of everything he's known for. As others have said, it features 3 different drummers, so you'll get a lot of variety on that side of things and the album itself is just nuts in its variety. As for Devin, he's one of the most diverse and skilled "metal" singers/musicians working today. He got started singing for Steve Vai so you know he's got chops. He then went on to start the extreme metal band Strapping Young Lad, and Gene Hoglan, who I believe you've reacted to, was his drummer there. In the meantime he was doing side projects under his own name that were the Yin to SYL's Yang. Since then, he's kind of started to merge the two extremes more, and I'd just call him progressive metal at this point (for the most part).
I love the line "though the future is hard to see" as the drums jump between time signatures, literally making the next part of the track "hard to see".
Never heard of Anip but he is a powerful drummer strikes with a lot of conviction... But then again when u are playing drums on a Devin Townsend creation... Its Very apparent Only passionate musicians can step foot in that world.. Anip is a Hell of a drummer.
Such a nice guy too! I tracked drums for my bands last record at his place over the span of a few days. Those recording sessions alone convinced me to get birch/bubinga Tama’s too, they track soooo nicely!
This is from 'Empath', which was a project by Devin Townsend (not to be confused with his recent folded band, The Devin Townsend Project) and had a lot of different guest artists. There were three drummers on the album, each playing to their strengths: Anup, Morgen Agren and Samus Paulicelli(Samus66). Anup was the drummer on this track of the album. Side note: the guitar solo in this song is performed by Steve Vai.
Devin Townsend was and is the inspiration for my guitar playing. I had to sell my drums to move oversees for a few years and it was there I reluctantly picked up the guitar and found inspiration and passion I never thought I would have thanks to Devin Townsend. Check out songs like: Kingdom, True North, Storm bending, From the Heart Ect.
Devin Townsend is an insanely prolific musical virtuoso. He essentially creates concept albums based solely on where he is in his life. Styles vary hugely. This song is from his latest album ‘Empath’, which featured three drummers. Anup Sastry for the dynamic, ‘djenty’, progressive metal parts; Morgan Ågren for the jazz/experimental parts; and Samus Paulicelli for blast beats, speed, blast beats and blast beats. I suggest you check each of them out. Also, Devin Townsend has an extensive and varied back catalogue - most of which can be found by searching for his name - but also look for: his various Strapping Young Lad albums, as well as ‘Ocean Machine’ (personal favourite), ‘Infinity’, ‘Terria’, ‘Physicist’ and ‘Ziltoid the Omniscient’.
Anup Sastre is one of three drummers playing on "Empath", DTs latest album. 66Samus and Morgan Agren are the other two. All three amazing. What Anup plays here is the final section of "Singularity" a 21 Minute piece at the end of Empath. The guitar solo is played by Steve Vai, female vocals Anneke van Giersbergen. The song is epic in every respect. The album a masterpiece. Sorry, had to be said...🎶🖖
I haven’t read all of the commentary. In the 90’s Devin did. a recording with Steve Vai, T.M. Stevens and Terry Bozzio. Devin was the singer of this “band”. Title of the Album was “Sex and Religion”. Greetings from Germany.
I think I've said this elsewhere, possibly on the Charismatic Voice's Dev videos - Devin is *the* master at finding acoustic space for each and every sound, which is why the wall of noise is crisp clean and pure. I've always tried to emulate it when I was a live FoH engineer. There's a behind the scenes video of Arjen Lucasson's Ayreon (which you should check out, Ed Wharby is a BEAST. In a nutshell Arjen assembles a big ensemble cast of musicians for each album and there's a super deliciously nerdy sci fi story thread between all the albums. It's a who's-who of prog and prog metal) for the recording "The Human Equation" Dev couldn't find time to fly to Arjen's studio in the Netherlands, so recorded his vox at home. And Arjen pulls up Devin's contribution thinking "ah he's done 24 tracks so I can choose the best". Oh no, there's a note "use ALL the tracks, it doesn't work without all the tracks at once." and for the emotion "Rage" he *nails* it with his subtle layering to the point where a brick has hit you in the face and you're not sure where it came from
Progressive meta/rock is probably the best description. Devin Townsend is amazing and always works with amazing drummers. Anup recorded drums on Devin's latest album Empath. The album actually has 3 different drummers all specializing in different styles.
"What genre is this?" Heavy Devy my friend. He is his own genre. If you liked this, check out the drum playthrough of his song Hear Me. Also, this album had 3 drummers on it, each playing to their own strengths. This guy did the prog stuff, Samus Paulicelli (maybe I spelled the right?) did the extreme metal stuff, and one other dude for the groovier parts. I feel bad for the single live drummer that had to do all of the above...
This particular song is about 15 minutes long over 7 parts with 3 different drummers (yes Anup is one of them) playing separate parts depending upon style. It's wild and he had planned on touring with all 3 drummers the next 6 months. However that was pre-pandemic and will now probably end up a one off show he'll record for DVD or something.
You have never heard of Devin Townsend ? seriously ? He is an awesome musician , in every expression of the word . Thankyou for doing this :) He is awesome :)
Anup Sastry is a BAD ASS!! He’s played with a lot of the big name Djent bands and has also produced some of their albums. He’s also played for Marty Friedman, formerly of Megadeth. Check out Beneath the Mask. He’s a figgin BEAST!!!🤘🏻🤘🏻
Anup played the drums along with 2 other drummers on Devin's latest album, of which this is part of the final song, a 24 minute epic called Singularity. He also used drummers Morgen Agren and Samus Paulicelli (66Samus on UA-cam, pretty sure i messed his last name up there) and it spans every genre of music, from spacey folk to extreme metal. Always interesting. If you want to hear an example of a song with all three drummers on the track listen to 'Genesis'
Take a look at Steve vai NOW WE RUN, (SteveVaiHimself) amazing instrumental dulling with 2 violin players, also keep an eye, and ears on the drummer JEREMY COLSON, Fantastic performance, Best wishes from the UK
Just FYI Anup was the drummer for that particular section. He did a few other tracks on that album, but the song Singularity is like 25 minutes long and that particular section is the end which he drummed on the record.
Oh this particular album, Devin Townsend had 3 drummers, to cover different "styles" or "moods" throughout. All of them absolute beasts. Anup Sastry, Samus Paulicelli (aka 66 Samus here on UA-cam and various other channels), and Morgen Ågren. You'd be impressed by all of them.
Like other people have already said, Devin had 3 different drummers play on this album, and all 3 feature in the full version of this song, Singularity (which is about 23 minutes long). He used Anup for the prog-y groovy parts, Samus for the blasting parts, and Morgan Ågren for the prog-y jazzy parts. Devin Townsend is an absurdly prolific writer, an incredibly talented vocalist, guitarist, and song writer, and a really cool guy to boot. You could honestly spend weeks, if not months, diving into his back catalogue, and I guarantee you'll find loads of stuff you enjoy because he's just so varied. From this, to ambient soundscapes, to brutal death metal, to New Age "hippy" music, to heavy metal pantomime, he's done it all.
Yep that was pretty much perfect ! Anup killed the track . Wow I'm impressed great job Anup Sastry !! Devin is just an amazingly talented Canadian singer ,songwriter, composer !!
I saw him live when he was touring with Jeff Loomis. He absolutely killed it! Dirk Verbeuren recorded the studio tracks for Loomis. He was touring with Soilwork, so got to see both Anup and Dirk in the same night. Dirk has also recorded and played live with Devin Townsend. Check out the song Juular.
Don't now if this was cleared up, so: Anup is the original drummer on this song. For this 2019 record, Devin recorded with 3 drummers (Anup Sastry, Morgan Agren and 66Samus), each one for a certain style of playing he was aiming for. In fact, I believe that all 3 play on this particular track, but in different sections. Devin is well know for his very characteristic wall of sound production and although his music leans a lot towards prog metal, he touched from ambient music to industrial to extreme metal, new age and even Disney musical style metal(!). Check out 66Samus' playthrough of the song Hear Me, from the same record. Different style but equal talent and musicianship.
Anup Sastry-Titan He is extremely talented. Definitely needs a look, i think you will enjoy it :) Love the content btw, found this channel few days ago and now i want to see every video :D
@6:51 Q: Is he the drummer in the band? A: No, he's the third drummer, playing the last (2?) movements of a single song... Samus Paulicelli and Morgan Agren also play drums for this song. The whole thing is excellent... probably my favorites song in universe at the moment.
Devin has fought for years on the underground of metal, always with a couple of inconditional fans. Finally, few years ago, the critics start amazing with him openly, and his music starts to arrive to all the metal fans. I have seen him six times, and never, never has done a bad concert. Last ones were simply the perfection in music. You have to check Terria, with Gene Hogland on drums. His best album for me.
im the worlds biggest Devin Townsend fan! WELCOmE! His bands he is known for Steve Vai (vocals+guitar) The Devin Townsend band(basically its Devin Townsend project) Strapping young lad(ended 2005-2006) Devin Townsend (Empath album example) Devin Townsend Project(hiatus)
You should definitely check out Aric Improta from Night Verses, Alex Camarena from Silent Planet, Matt Halpern of Periphery, Donovan Melero of Hail The Sun, Tatsuya Amano of Crossfaith, and Andrew McEnaney from his old band STRUC/TURES.
Been following anup since 2013 skyharbor music. Djent is his main focus i think, but he likes mixing it up. He likes to cover but he has his own stuff, anup does. Excellent drumming.....
If you like devin townsend in this song you should check out his older band strapping young lad he had a drummer you've already reacted to gene hoglen and you should listen to a song called love it will show you Devin's lung capacity truly he's one of the greatest singers of metal and he's not bad on the guitar either
I like that you don't have heard all of the new drummers / music. That makes it more fair :) . And one drummer i really admire is Gar Samuelson (R.I.P.) , most known for Megadeth years...he and Chris Poland came in to Megadeth, as Jazz musician's ..and change the sound of Thrash metal forever ...The album Peace Sells...is still one of the best out there. That Thrash/Jazz album..is a complicated one.
to clarify for you... this is a 4-5 min segment of a 20 min song... on which two other drummers also perform certain sections; Morgan Ågren and Samus "66Samus" Paulicelli being the other two drummers. which is pretty much how the whole album was done. each drummer did what they were good at for a particular song or section of a song. that album being the most recent release by as you discovered, solo artist, song craftsman, and humorist extraordinaire, devin townsend.
For your own personal enjoyment listen to Devin Deadhead at the royal Albert Hall, Kingdom live at the EMG studio, the video for Genesis. He is his own genre.
Anup is an absolute monster. Should check out some of his material with "Intervals" (anything up to 2014). He also produces & records his solo material, "Titan" is a fantastic track as an example. He was also in the UK band "Monuments" for a hot a second, who I would also recommend as they have some pretty groovy & insane drumming going on.
Never too late to find a Prog Metal God right? :D Just enjoy it guys ^^ Anup is the official member of the collaboration for this album....as Steve Vai who is also playing in this song :)
3 Drummers on this Devin Townsend Album "Empath". Anup is one of them. youtuber Samus666 is another. Morgan Ågren is the other. All are "guests" on the album. I'd call the genre a form of progressive melodic metal Edit, the song "Genesis" from the above album has all 3 drummers on it.

What Anup plays here is the final section of "Singularity" a 21 Minute piece at the end of Empath. The guitar solo is played by Steve Vai, female vocals Anneke van Giersbergen. The song is epic in every respect. The album a masterpiece. Sorry, had to be said...🎶🖖
Empath is this generation's Dark Side of the Moon.
@@kchez5586 If only it would bring Devin the commercial success for full artistic freedom.👍🤘🖖
Totally controlled chaos here,... this guy can drum in heaven as far as I'm concerned , oooorahhh
This dude CRUSHES the drums.
I haven’t read all of the commentary. In the 90’s Devin did. a recording with Steve Vai, T.M. Stevens and Terry Bozzio. Devin was the singer of this “band”. Title of the Album was “Sex and Religion”. Greetings from Germany.
Right there with you; first time I heard Sastry I was hooked.
You just discovered a cornucopia of craziness. Devin Townsend is a force of nature!
Anup wrote and recorded the drums for this Devin Townsend track.
This genre is called Townsend.. or at least should be =)
HAHA! Yes!
Devymetal for the indoctrinated.
"What genre is this?"
Heavy Devy my friend.
Yeah he seems really unique. Can't wait to hear more!
I love to see people's reactions when they discover Devin haha!! He isn't called the Mad Scientist of Metal for nothing you know! ;)
GREAT! HAHA
Anup played on this song on the album, yes. Please do more of him, he's freaking awesome.
How could anyone not like this huh!?
It's pure joy and passion for drumming
If you want to hear an example of a song with all three drummers on the track listen to 'Genesis'
i LOVE that the second Google suggestion is "devin townsend skullett". Classic!
So, Devin, which genre is your music?
Devin: Yes.
And yes, as suggested, please check out "Hear me" drum playthrough. Also Devin Townsend.
Take a look at Steve vai NOW WE RUN, (SteveVaiHimself) amazing instrumental dulling with 2 violin players, also keep an eye, and ears on the drummer JEREMY COLSON, Fantastic performance, Best wishes from the UK
Also Deep Down Into The Pain by Vai with Devin on vocals.
Just FYI Anup was the drummer for that particular section. He did a few other tracks on that album, but the song Singularity is like 25 minutes long and that particular section is the end which he drummed on the record.
Anup is a cool guy, you should check him out playing Skyharbor's Evolution.
Thank you!
anup is just awesome in this one...a real beast
This is also really nice.

Absolutely crazy and impressive!
Steve Vai solo... need I say more? Might be my favorite drum performance ever.
Anup is one of my favorites. Look into his album, Illuminate for more amazing work from him.
Yep that was pretty much perfect ! Anup killed the track . Wow I'm impressed great job Anup Sastry !! Devin is just an amazingly talented Canadian singer ,songwriter, composer !!
Yes he killed it!
Singer in the Steve Viie baad, played The wildhearts and Punky Brewsters!!!
If you’re digging Devin Townsend check out the song Failure, to me it has an amazing drum track
You should definitely dig into Devin’s music. He’s on a level of its own
I've done a few on him now. All amazing
Still one of the tastiest drum parts I’ve ever heard. The full album has 3 different drummers because
💯👌
Thanks 👍😘🇸🇪
That snare smack is awesome.
Soooo good!
I get some Matt Halpern vibes watching Anup play. I don't know who of them did it first, but I don't care. Because I love them.
Anup Sastry-Titan
He is extremely talented. Definitely needs a look, i think you will enjoy it :)
Love the content btw, found this channel few days ago and now i want to see every video :D
@6:51
Q: Is he the drummer in the band?
His best album for me.
welcom to the world of Devin!!!!!!
im the worlds biggest Devin Townsend fan! WELCOmE! His bands he is known for
Steve Vai (vocals+guitar)
The Devin Townsend band(basically its Devin Townsend project)
Strapping young lad(ended 2005-2006)
Devin Townsend (Empath album example)
Devin Townsend Project(hiatus)
You should definitely check out Aric Improta from Night Verses, Alex Camarena from Silent Planet, Matt Halpern of Periphery, Donovan Melero of Hail The Sun, Tatsuya Amano of Crossfaith, and Andrew McEnaney from his old band STRUC/TURES.
I can give specific songs or post links if needed
Devin is an musical mastermind🙏
HAVE to revisit Anup Sastry. ... so amazing.
CAN'T WAIT!
Been following anup since 2013 skyharbor music. Djent is his main focus i think, but he likes mixing it up. He likes to cover but he has his own stuff, anup does. Excellent drumming.....
I believe he got 3 different drummers to play on this album. He needed the vibe from these specific musicians.
Townsend is in a genre of his own.
to clarify for you... this is a 4-5 min segment of a 20 min song... on which two other drummers also perform certain sections; Morgan Ågren and Samus "66Samus" Paulicelli being the other two drummers. which is pretty much how the whole album was done. each drummer did what they were good at for a particular song or section of a song. that album being the most recent release by as you discovered, solo artist, song craftsman, and humorist extraordinaire, devin townsend.
Thanks for the great info Clint!
Just enjoy it guys ^^
Anup is the official member of the collaboration for this album....as Steve Vai who is also playing in this song :)
3 Drummers on this Devin Townsend Album "Empath".
Anup is one of them.
youtuber Samus666 is another.
Morgan Ågren is the other.
All are "guests" on the album.
I'd call the genre a form of progressive melodic metal
Edit, the song "Genesis" from the above album has all 3 drummers on it.
Love the song n the drumming is awesome. This guy is a hard hitter talent talent talent👏👏
Yes it's pure passion on this one!
"Devin Townsend, never heard of this person. Very interesting vocal tone"
*Oh boy, he doesnt know.*
This is new to me too. And yet another Tama player, yea!!!🤘🏻🥁❤️
Great!!!
fun fact: devin's first introduction to the music industry at large, was with steve vai, as his singer for the album sex & death.
Wow!
