I often buy fabric without a specific pattern in mind, though I generally have an idea of the type of garment I want to make. My magic number is three, mainly because I'm a short but plus-sized sewer, and would rather have too much fabric than not enough. From now on, I'll definitely keep in mind all your excellent points / tips as I shop for fabric. Thanks so much!
That takes some practice too. One thing I do when cutting on the fold is to not always fold the fabric totally in half. So instead of cutting something out of the middle of the fabric on the fold I'll cut it on the side and that leaves me a bigger leftover piece.

I’m currently a plus size, so my magic number is 4ish (sometimes 5, depends on my what my gut says for that fabric & my game plan for it).
SO HELPFUL!!!!
Don’t forget extra if there’s a print, so u can match it up at the seams
Great tip!
So helpful! My magic number is 4, I think. I’m not super good at maximizing my layouts yet

It took me some time to learn to buy 2, preferably 3, meters of fabric.
Sometimes I get 2 as well. You can really make a lot with just 2.
What about rayon materal
The same principles apply for any type of fabric. The blog post might help: bit.ly/3feZzgL Happy sewing!
