That’s the saw I have! I’m not as dumb as I look.
I've got a problem where something on the side plate is bent, and when the brake goes on, the plastic bit doesn't engage with the 3 spoke metal thing, unless I loosen the two nuts. I haven't worked out what is bent.
Yup...my saw...I did the rookie mistake...Thanks again for tips and tricks, excuse me...(Techniques)
Thank you!!! Great video saved the day!!!!
How does it measure up against Sthil Farm Boss?
Nothing like fighting with a saw for several hours in the woods to get home and find I could fix it in about 30 seconds. Thanks for the video!!
Glad to help
yep i learnt that
lesson learned
The only thing better is getting so pissed that you smash your saw to bits, completely destroying it and then finding out it would have been an easy fix….
Ditto.
@@u.sonomabeach6528 😂😂😂😂😂 I was in my garage, so lucky. Of course I’m a super amateur and have never been in the woods with a saw so 🤷♂️ Very new to this, took me days to find this video tho ✌️ I have loved Steve’s videos for years but didn’t even know what solution to look for, so confused. So happy now!
Steve: I can not thank you enough for this easy to understand video! I would never have been able to figure that out on my own in many, many, hours. I started to do the repair the wrong way just like you described (using a screw driver to pry off the cover)! After 69 years of living, you taught an old dog a new trick! Thanks again so much!
You're Welcome...
Figured out the problem but didn't know how to fix it thanks a million for such a easy simple fix
Thanks Steve for this video. I wish your channel was around years ago. I made the same mistake as you mentioned. I took it to a shop where the mechanic said "I don't know if I can fix it, but I have to charge you $70.00 an hour with no guarantees." I walked out of his shop and ordered a new cover. The reason why I started learning how to fix engines is because of the shitty & expensive service in my area. I bought tools, books and now watch your videos. Now I mock the local shops and fix my engines and my neighbors for free. Thanks for your videos and keep em' commin'.
Brand new Husky, never used, and had the stuck chainsaw brake issue!!! We were at a dead halt!!! My niece found your video, and got my saw fixed and ready to rock and roll in no time!!! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH FOR SAVING THE DAY, AND WEEKEND OF WORK FOR US!!!
Right on Nancy! You're Welcome...
More than just a thumb up , thanks a billion for the helpful idea !
You're welcome...
Thanks a million man!! Saved my butt!
I just bought a 450 Rancher. When I took it home to assemble the bar etc, I got ahead of the instructions and had to pry the side cover off as the chain brake was locked. Of course I couldn't get the cover back on.....took it to the dealer and they took it out back to reset the spring. I didn't watch. Then I went 3 hours away to tackle some trees blown over by hurricane Ian. My chain came off so I had to remove the side cover. I knew there was a procedure to follow. I forgot to release the brake, pried it off and was in a pickle without the ability to reset it. Steve, this video saved me a lot of grief using the first method you showed, even though I had to return home with the problem . Even better, the cover was on with moderate tension on the nut. Pulling the brake handle back did it. How easy! Thanks Steve!
You're Welcome...
Ha, did exactly as the other novices; felt the friction, pulled it off anyway. Option #1 solved it at once. Awesome - thanks!
Glad it helped!
You are a gift to those of us that have made that mistake. I’m just getting started with chainsaw repair and service. I do it for free for our Louisiana Baptist Disaster Relief groups and I just ran into that issue. Thanks so much.
You're Welcome...
Can not thank you enough! Was exactly my problem and thanks for not only showing how to fix the problem but explain how the mistake was made so we rookies don't make the mistakes again. Appreciated!
Great to hear!
I had this problem years ago, and watched many videos that completely failed to explain the problem, much less how to fix it. You’re a legend.
Thank You...
You rule Steve... just made this mistake today, knew it had something to do with the clutch brake, etc. Felt my blood beginning to boil, but refrained from launching the saw across the driveway thankfully. Going to go try this in a bit. Will edit in a few! EDIT- wrenche/vise worked like a charm, thanks Steve!!
Right on
you just save me an angry trip back to lowes, this world needs more people like you! thank you thank you thank you
You're Welcome...
Happened to me when a rope gut entangled around the sprocket and made the cover pop off. Couldn't for the world understand what had happened. Thought it was broken. But then after several hours I understood. Very irritating! Good you brought it up!
Right on buddy...
You are now my new favorite youtuber. Since I've found your channel, I've used multiple tips and tricks I learned from your videos to fix things in seconds that I spent hours trying to fix and getting very frustrated with. Thankyou sir and god bless you for sharing your valuable knowledge!
Awesome, thank you!
Oh my God by accident I gave your video a try and I’m having this problem with my husky chainsaw and you saved me a trip to the service shop . Steve thanks so much for this information.
You're Welcome...
I recently inherited my Dad's chainsaw that I've been trying to get working. I suspect this was his issue. I appreciate this quick fix to keep a tool that means a lot to me.
Right on
I wish you had done this video 12 years ago I locked my break when I was cleaning my saw for the first time and fought with it for over a hour. Thanks for your easy too understand videos. I’ve learned a lot of these things myself but have got some new ideas from you. Keep up the good work!
Thank you very much Alan...
I was out in the trees with the manual hoping it would be in there somewhere. so I went home to look for helpful vids.
why isn't this in the manual?
Steve, as a newbie to the world of chainsaws. I did EXACTLY what you described regarding the clutch cover removal. Used my Husqvarna Rancher 460 for the 2nd time this past weekend, did not check the chain tension on day 2 and lost the 24" chain that came with the chainsaw. (I was looking for an excuse to buy an Oregon chain 😎) I pried the cover off with a flathead. Purchased a new chain, installed it on the bar and sprocket and the damn cover wouldn't seet properly. I was prepared to take my new Husqvarna into the local shop for repair. I tell friends of mine constantly that any information that you need regarding product knowledge and how-to's - you can most likely find on youtube. I came back into the house after closing up the shop, sat down and decided I would try to find a video similar to the problem I was having. Yours was the first one that came up. Everything you described in the beginning of that video was spot on regarding my situation. I did just as you suggested and got it to mount flush. The doggone thing is working 100% now. Thank you very much for doing this video. You saved me from the walk of shame at the local repair shop.
Right on Mark! You're Welcome...
Thanks for starting this video off with cracking open a beer. I followed your lead and it immediately helped the situation.
I watched this same video 3 years ago when the same thing happened to me. I remembered what to do the second time except the part where you pull back to get the click to open the spring. You should make a shorted version of this video where you shotgun two beers and then just get right to point.
Cheers!
THANK YOU!!! My work partner and I have been struggling with this for an hour!
You're Welcome...
Glad to hear that! I feel better now.
Steve, you are a hero. Neighbour handed in a Husqvarna 455 rancher this morning with exactly that problem. A quick check of your vid and the guy gets his saw back within an hour. Thanks very much.
Right on Neil! You're Welcome...
Great tip , a simple thing like that can cause a whole lot of frustration. question i have one of the old pioneer saws, p61. i am not sure of the fuel ratio for that old bugger, would you happen to know what it is? its a 1983 , its number is wore off , but it looks like p61
I believe those were 25:1, but that's before the quality of mix oil was as good as it is today! Good quality mix oil at 32:1 should be just fine....
Been fighting with this problem like a jackass for an hour, thank god for people like you out there putting videos out on these issues.
Right on Jonny!
Same here
I have a problem, I look up your video’s on the exact problem I have then I follow your advice step by step and BAM problem solved. You’re putting small engine dudes outta business in my area LOL
LOL! Right on...
After prying the cover off my chainsaw because it just wouldn't come off....I couldn't get it to go back on. Spent about 20 minutes trying to figure out why my cover had suddenly changed shape and no longer fit my chainsaw. This video is EXACTLY what I did. Thank you for saving me a trip to the shop and probably $100. What an amazing channel.
Thank You...
Yasss..OMG!!.. thank you Sir! My frustrations have finally come to a happy end. Steve, mate..🍻🙏🍻
Right on Mikey! You're Welcome...
Perfect. Thanks very much. I made the stupid move you mentioned..."Hmm...this cover won't come off...maybe I should pry it a bit..." Now, with your instruction, I was able to get it back on. I really appreciate it.
I couldn't use the 'hold it on crooked and use the hand brake lever to fix' approach. Instead, I put an open end end wrench head upward in my vise, using it to rotate the spring as you illustrated.
Again, thank you!
You're Welcome...Glad that helped...
Thanks! Cause I know I have pounded that side plate back on wondering what was wrong with it, now I am wondering what was wrong with me!!
LOL. You're welcome...
After running Stihl saws for years, recently bought a Husqvarna 550XP, after taking apart to do routine maintenance and cleaning, and reassembly makes me appreciate the simplicity of Stihls, won’t buy anymore Husqvarna. Stihl just makes it simple and easy, internal clutch is much easier to mount bar/chain, take apart/reassemble.
Now here's the question. Why didnt I watch this video before I took the whole brake assembly apart and fought with it for an hour!
Hey you're not alone
I did the same..
@@michaelstevens1601 Me too!! Can't get the spring back on.
If i could have watched you, i could have saved myself 2 hours!
Riddle me this... Why did I do the same thing twice?
Great explanation, and better yet, three easy options. Way easier than opening it up and prying on the spring, like some of the other videos say to do.
Glad it helped!
Hi Steve good video like your l live in USA in the mountains of Kentucky I have 4 or 5 chain saws and you know thay break down thanks for great videos.
You're welcome...
It felt like you were talking directly to me when you were talking about how people use a screwdriver to reef off the cover. Thanks for the tip. A real lifesaver!
Glad I could help
This is one of the best videos on UA-cam. Great step-by-step explanation of the problem and how to fix it. Like others have commented, once I knew what to do, it was a matter of 10-15 seconds of work. Many thanks!
Wow, thanks!
A cell phone and this video kept the day from being wasted for some friends clearing downed trees on a neighbor's lot today. I stopped to say hello, and they showed me the problem they had been fighting for an hour or so. I searched Steve's channel, and 10 minutes later, the saw was running. It can be done without the beer, which is a good thing, because, hey, there are chainsaws involved! I left, but heard later there were a few brews consumed after the loading, transport, and unloading. Thanks , Steve!
Awesome...You're Welcome...
Steve you are the favorite I have looked at lots but they dont ever address the mistakes. You have saved me from frustration, no wasted time, just all the details. Such a relief.
Thanks John...
Once again, Steve to the rescue. 7/16 inch sprocket in a vise, by far the best method. Even the correct wrench size. Thanks again Steve! You are the man!
Glad to help
This video is running 2 plus years and still helping dummy's like me. Thanks so much, Steve.
You're Welcome...
Came up against this issue today while using a friend's Husquvarna - I'm a Stihl user - couldn't figure it out at first then, Samsung mobile broadband, UA-cam and Steve came to the rescue. Option 1 worked a treat, so, many thanks from N. Ireland.
You're Welcome...
Steve, steve, steve, where were you ten minutes ago? I watched ten videos about removing the side cover, none addressed releasing the brake. The manual didn’t either. I did get the cover off eventually using a plastic vehicle trim tool.
Then your video appeared in my feed…. 😭😭😭😭😭
You are a national treasure.
Another five minute job taking hours.
Right on buddy! Thank You...
OMG, thank you, so much for this video - I spent 3 days messing with this. Ordered a new clutch cover and had the same challenge. life saver!
Glad it helped!
You are the least annoying person and the easiest to listen to on how to fix something I have ever had the pleasure of listening to! Thank you for this video, you saved me again!!
Wow, thanks
You are the best Steve. The other sites offered the same old stuff. You got to actually solving the problem. Thank you thank you!
Glad to help
I was fiddling around with my saw for about two hours. I knew what was wrong, but I could not fix it. Fixed in about thirty seconds after this. Thank you so much!!
You're Welcome...
Steve:What a great guy! Even though the two chainsaw brake videos didn't specifically address my MS192TC Stihl, you pointed me in the right direction where I was able to locate the brake area behind two T-20 star screws. The area was filled with a decade of oil and sawdust which froze the brake. Cleaned it out, reassembled it and finished my task for the day. Cheers!
Right on
Thanks man! I took my Husky Rancher 455 out today to clear a fence line and this is exactly what happened when I was cleaning my saw. I was enroute to my dealer to see what the problem might be when I stopped and thought, this has to be a simple thing. UA-cam it! I turned around and went home ...and there was your video! I just got in from an afternoon of productive work with my saw thanks to you! Have another beverage of the day on me!
Glad it helped!
Thanks BIG time! I have this exact problem, and did what you said most people do. I have been very frustrated. After watching your video, I now know how to solve the problem. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!!
You're welcome!
Neighbor removed cover, brake engaged. Took cover off of spring mechanism, studied it, cleaned it, oiled it. Tried turning the 3 pt wheel with needle nose. No go. So stiff we thought it might be broken. Thanks for the tip. He’s a happy camper.
Well done!
So a guy messed up reseting my clutch. I was trying to get clutch cover off. So I found this video. Easy peasy. much appreciated. Funny think was referred to the same video a few years ago.
This guy is awesome. My buddies chainsaw brake locked up. Watched this video and had it fixed within 5 minutes.
Right on Aaron!
I was borrowing my friend's saw, a Husqvarna 460 rancher, and this happened to me. Your video saved my A**, and the work day. Thank you so much for the help!!
Glad I could help
You just saved me from needlessly buying a new clutch plate and/or an embarrassing trip to the repair shop for such a simple fix.
Excellent!
Outstanding! I was scratching my head for 15 minutes - option 2 took about 15 seconds. Thanks!
You're Welcome...
Thank you Steve. I just used your technique on a '16 562XP...yep, some genius pulled the cover off with the brake engaged. He swears it was half-cocked and wouldn't release. He then used a screwdriver to persuade it off the rest of the way. I cleaned it out really good and reset it your way. It was super gooped up and acting like glue. It's still very cold here and I'm using winter weight bar oil, and not cutting any conifer.
No pay raise, bonuses or any new tools for that guy until he pays it off...extra firewood cutting and hand splitting for him! :). You saved my bacon.
It worked. I was messing with it for an hour till I saw this video. First saw I’ve owned so I didn’t realize what it takes to remove a chain.
Right on
Yep! I did it! This video is 6 years old and still helping us newbs look semi-smart again! lol Thanks for sharing the fix
Excellent!
Steve's trick to unlock the chainsaw brake by twisting or conjoling (sp?) absolutely made my day. It works!!!! And my saw is back in action
Right on
I got my saw stuck this morning in an ash tree that was leaning against another tree. To make a long story short the tree came down and pinched the saw and knocked it to the ground. I figured out it was the chain break but couldn't figure out how to reset it. Watched your video in my workshop and grabbed a 7/16 wrench and my vice and was back in business! Only thing I broke was chain break handle. Thanks allot Steve I'll keep watching your videos I'm learning allot.
You're Welcome...
This vid saved my bacon this afternoon. Saw works like a champ again! Thanks. Steve!!
A hint for the unwary---make sure the back plate is on over the spring assembly. If you don't, that spring will pop out and fly across the shop. I managed to find it pretty quickly, and then spent an hour getting it back in.
One of the very best "how-to' ever. Thank you Steve.
WOW! You're Welcome...
Thank you very much for posting this video! Like other people, we worked on the saw for hours but fixed it in seconds after trying your first tip. Thanks again...
Great to hear!
Steve, I've struggled with this having attempted several times to figure out why the clutch cover wouldn't go back in place. Thank you yet again for your advice!
Glad it helped
Super helpful - took the entire saw apart a couple of times. Searched all over for videos before I came across this one - fixed and running in short order. Thanks!
You're welcome!
I was going to try a crows foot and breaker bar...figured I'd do a search first. At least now I know what size to grab. Rarely have I had any luck putting one back on the case. What happens with these is more of a brake half engaging. The handle is halfway between locked and unlocked so you don't see it. If the cover hasn't been off in awhile or if you are working with dirty stuff you sometimes need a slight nudge with a screw driver to get the cover off. If you feel pressure, you stop and check the brake but we aren't prying the cover off, the half engaged brake snaps shut as the cover comes off. It's happened to me 3 times on 2 different ranchers. Love your videos, thanks for posting them.
Fantastic tutorial Steve, I used your 7/16 wrench trick on my Husqvarna. Back in service within minutes. Cheers.
Thank You...
You are amazing, you saved my frustration again!!!! I preyed the cover off and no way was it going back on!!! Thank You!!!
Glad I could help!
That’s what I needed. I was pretty sure what was causing the problem but couldn’t figure out how to do the fix. Saved the day. Thanks!
Glad I could help
Thanks Steve!!! I made the mistake of pulling the cover off with the chain brake on and could not figure out how to fix it. You saved me from needlessly spending money taking it into the shop and looking dumb. Thanks buddy!
You're Welcome...
Hey Steve! Great helpful videos! This one especially! I have a Husqvarna 440. Had a stuck chain brake, but I fixed it thanks to your help. Only thing is the chain turns very slowly. I’ve check and check. Any suggestions?
Steve nailed it again. Love the thorough explanation. When we do somewhat dumb things (like taking off chainsaw cover the wrong way), it's good to have the fix easily shown. Now, time to actually do it and get back to work. Thanks, Steve.
You're Welcome...
THANK YOU STEVE!! Two hours into simply attempting to replace the chain, my day was pretty much shot after not being able to put the housing cover on correctly. I had the brake mechanism opened up, but couldn't figure out how to re-position the spring mechanism without breaking the whole darn thing. Thanks to you, I realized that I needed to apply extra muscle, and I was able to salvage this beautiful Spring day, and now have some nice cherry logs ready for milling. After watching your video, and hearing you say, "now get back to work', was the most hopeful moment I had all day! :-)
Right on Buddy...
You just saved me about $80! I googled my problem and your video came right up on the first try. Thanks a bunch!
You're Welcome...
Tried all three methods... The wrench in the vice worked best for me. Thanks
Right on ....
Struggled with this problem for 45 minutes before finding this vid. Very helpful, thank you.
you prolly don't get this often enough, but you sir are awesome. Thanks for the video and not 1 but 3 ways to fix the issue. i used #3 . Thank you very much you saved my Christmas.
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
Thank you Steve! I just bought 455rancher used it a couple times and decided to clean up the saw. Took off the the bar plate with clutch engaged, I thought I broke it. Spent an hour triing to figure out how to put the spring back in. Glad I found your video. Had it back on in minutes. Thanks again!!
Glad I could help
Fixed my exact problem. Pulled the plate off for cleaning and was scratching my head trying to get it back on. Thanks!
You're welcome!
Just sat here and explained to my wife how I’d screwed up my chainsaw... did it a year or two ago but couldn’t remember what I did to unload spring. Thank goodness for your channel!! Fixed in 2 min. (Is already spent 45 min in futility)
I can't possibly thank you enough. I was taking my saw back and forth to the shop to fix this brake problem. And they would keep it for 10 days. DANG!
You're Welcome...
Did you ask them to show how?
Outstanding easy to understand, could not get the side cover back on. I could see that the spring needed reset. followed the instructions and the brake reset allowing me to easily slide the side cover back on. This video saved me from taking it in to be fixed. Like I mentioned I could see the problem but did not know the fix. This saved me a of hassle and money. Thanks for a great video that was short and to the point!
Thanks champion! I also did the rookie move “take the cover off without checking”. Saved my bacon.
Cheers🥳
You're Welcome...
Thank you so much I can’t tell you how many times I took this thing apart and then put it back together and then took it apart but your video made it so simple. Thank you.
You're welcome!
Man, the part about the stuck brake was gold. Thanks!
You're Welcome...
Thanks a million. When I bought it, the guy told me about what not to do. Unfortunately, this was one of those things I had forgotten. Your a life saver. Thank you very much!
You're Welcome...
Thanks Steve, that's a neat little trick. "Don't take off side cover with brake on" should be one of the first things a person reads in the maintenance section of their Husqvarna manual...
Good point!
Steve, you are the man. exactly what happened to my Husqvarna. I thought I could come to your site and find a solution. Bam, there it was. Thanks so much.
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
You just saved my butt. I did this to two different chainsaws on the same day. Fixed them both thanks to you.
Right on Danny...
You have no idea how thankful I am for this. I did the exact thing on my 455 Rancher when cleaning, lol
Glad I could help
Got a bunch of debris stuck in my chain this morning, did not notice the brake was set. Thanks for the help Steve!
Glad to help
Thanks, like many of the other comments, I struggled with the saw and was about to bring it to a small engine repair as I had exhausted my options. Glad I did one more search online
Right on Paul!
you sir, are a genius, Husky 556 fix for a stuck brake drum is about 4 min 4 secs in and once I saw the fix it took me about 20 seconds to get the cover back on. thank you heaps. Greg in Australia
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
I absolutely love you! You have saved my self respect! I must have watched 0 videos from husqvarna and YOUR'S made sense and worked. I subscribed. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Wow, thanks! and You're Welcome...
Saved me a trip to the shop and a night of lost cutting. Thanks!
Excellent!
good video - gave me fix for my Husqvarna 450 rancher chainsaw brake reset -7/16 wrench and a vice - easy job after all.
Excellent!
Steve, I put an hour into trying to reset the brake and thought I was local dealer bound but found your UA-cam and went with the 7/16 wrench in the vise method and was back in business within minutes. Rainier's on me!
Right on Scotty...
Thank you for this. I made exactly every mistake that you pointed out and got the same effect. This saved me. Appreciate it brother.
Glad it helped!
Thanks Steve! I used the open end wrench and opened the chain brake. It felt great fixing it myself.
You're Welcome...
Thanks Steve. It was exactly the information I needed with my new Huskvarna 260. I spent an hour trying to get
the cover back off before checking your video. Worked great !!
Right on....
Thanks Steve! I futzed with my husqvarna 455 for an hour before I searched you up and found this video. Fixed it using the 7/16” wrench in my bench vise. Back to work!
Right on Dennis....
