Two hours of screaming bloody nightmare, I decided to check online for help. After watching your video, I was able to get the spring back in in less than a minute. You are a lifesaver!!! I'm going to have a beer now because I need it.
I ran it for the rest of the day without the spring installed because the tree wasn't going to buck itself...then I went looking for some clever fella like this guy once the saw was cold.
Oh what a lifesaver you are sir. I was facing a weekend with no heating, light was fading, no logs, chainsaw shop closed, a miserable couple of days hiding under my duvet in prospect. A desperate youtube search, an angle grinder, and a butchered spark plug spanner later and the world is rosy again. Cannot thank you enough.
This video deserves a million thumbs up. I fought that brake for half an hour. After watching this video, I had the entire saw back together in ten minutes. THANKS!
I had good luck using the tip of a plumb bob to push the spring back in after I couldn’t find a screwdriver with the right amount of taper, just as an alternative to anyone encountering the same issue. Excellent video though man, really helped me out a lot! Glad there are people like you who dedicate some of their time to freely sharing their knowledge with the rest of us.
I was out there, screaming and cursing and trying to make it work. The damn scrench has that cut-out in it now. I had no idea what it was for until I found your video. Lifesaver.
Husky 440 I had not installed the cover plate over the spring assembly and I launched the spring into the dark realm of my work shed. lol I came inside and found your video and laughed at your warning regarding the spring. I will attempt to find the spring tomorrow. Great video!!!
Brilliant thank you. As has been said by so many others, this is such a perfect video. i followed this to get the spring back in. Before I saw this I was trying to get everything back in with the spring attached. Saved loads of frustration.
Like everyone else that said Thank you! Your knowledge of this spring assembly is so much power that you don’t even know. I thank you immensely on posting this video. You sir could do what others could not do. This video helped so much to get my chainsaw back in working order. Now I am going to use my chainsaw until it breaks again. Hopefully you will be making videos of other problems with chainsaws so then I can absorb your teachings. Once again thank you thank you thank you.
Ten years later an still a life saver, read all the comments and needless to add my different fails, then I found this , wow Thank You, BTW your fix was used on a Poulan P3314
Many thanks for this repair video for this common problem when we clean out a gummed up chain brake housing. I called the local "authorized" Husqvarna repair shop here in Florida, a Kubota dealership. The service manager I talked to said they had an upfront repair charge of $45 USD after I explained the brake spring problem you address in this video. But after listening to me, he further said that I would probably have to "buy a new part." I knew right then they were shysters and began my YT search and found your video right away. I also found another video where the repairman simply moved the brake handle forward and then slipped the clutch cover and brake housing onto the saw. He then simply pulled back on the handle and the brake sprocket turned to the off position. He didn't need to use a Scrench tool cut up with a Dremel like you used. I will post the link to that YT video after I post this and come back and edit it. I plan to post a bad review on this businesses Google listing and put the link to your video in the review. They deserve some comeuppance for trying to rip off an elderly service disabled Marine veteran. Nothing works better in dealing with con artists and opportunists than to Expose them on Google reviews. Thanks a million for your work and sharing your expertise with us average chainsaw users.
Brilliant. Very clearly explained and filmed. After half an hour of frustration, spring flying into my eye, etc., you made it easy. Took a while to make the tool but well worth it.
I was ready to take my saw to the shop today, because I did make the mistake of taking the cover off with the brake on. I also removed the spring and couldn't work out how to put it back on. Now I can try to put it back together myself, thanks to this great video. I'll have to make that little tool first to reset the brake. Thanks very much. I've subscribed.
Thank you, Sir - it was fixed in a minute after spending hours and getting fingers snapped by the spring popping out. I used a needle nose pliers to push the spring in - it was easier to remove once the spring caught the edge of the cover than the screwdrivers I have. The saw is ready to go, just in time for my Fall yard clean up. Again, thanks much!
Two thumbs up for a great video. I often give bad reviews/comments on videos because most waste time on verbal diarrhea. Great job giving all the necessary information on getting the spring back and setting the brake.
Awesome! I had the break on! About 30 minutes trying to figure out how it went back on. The tool idea was great. Cutting wheel and an extra wrench a small vice grip to bend back in business! Thanks
Yes, want to thank you too. Bought new, shipped it to Costa Rica, and then we couldn't reassemble it due to the spring. We are now cutting one of those tools (as I write) to be able to set it back to the open position. We too were going to just leave the spring out, until I found your video. What a help this has been.
Thanks!!! I didn't have a plug wrench, so I made a tool out of conduit and flattened one end with a hole so I could use either a screw driver or adj wrench for leverage. Using your idea worked super. I knew what I had to do to reset the safety, but just couldn't get the leverage I needed. I was blown away to find your video.
Thank you so much for this video. I had exactly this issue - couldn't figure out how to get the spring back in after taking it to bits to clean. Thought I'd just have to leave the spring out and do without the chainbrake. Brilliant stuff.
the chainsaw brand I am putting back together is poulan but the same principle applied. This solution is so simple and quick, I had been struggling for an hour... Thank you so much.
Thank you! I took my chain brake off because I didn't know that it was and needed to use the saw. Now I know what it is and how to fix it. Most informative video I have ever seen
Thanks for the screwdriver idea. I watched another video on how to get the cover back on without that tool. You can actually put it on by pushing the cover really close to the chansaw brake handle and disengaging it by making contact with the gear switch thing.
I can't thank you enough for this vid. I found myself trying literally for hours to get that damn spring in, then I copied your home made tool! Great video extremely helpful
This guy covers some great ways to get it back on without making that tool: ua-cam.com/video/vYr-jU94yAI/v-deo.html I actually got it to work by pushing the cover right next to the chainsaw brake handle and disengaging the brake by pressing the gears together.
@@truthwillsetyoufree8252 thanks for adding this link- the 7/16 wrench in a vice did it for me- of course, would have never gotten to that point without this video--first time I ever hit 2 great you tube videos without traveling through a mile of garbage videos! It went so well I may break it again just cause I can fix it----no, I'll break something new!
I'd like to say thanks for posting this video. I had two large trees trimmed by a professional and opted to clear the debris myself rather than pay him to do it. I enlisted the help of four friends and they arrived promptly on time. Before their arrival I cleaned up my chainsaw and during the process managed to spring the chain brake. So I looked like a dope when they showed up and I had a busted saw. Three of us fiddled with it for over an hour with no success. Someone got the idea of checking UA-cam and we found your video. We had the chainsaw working within ten minutes to the cheers of those assembled! Thank you so much for posting. You were indeed my hero this Saturday past.
Great video. You saved the day showing how to put the spring back on. The special releasing tool that was used was a golf spike tool which did the trick. Vice having to make your brilliant scrench tool.
I ended up sacrificing an old spade bit because I dont have a big enough screw driver. Something with a handle would have helped a lot, but I managed to get it back in. Thank you!!
It worked on a craftsman, just be careful the spring is very strong. I wore face shield and gloves. I didn't know how i will compress the spring. This is a great video. Thanks
Thank you! I just replaced my broken HANDLE and then discovered I still can't get my cover on. It looks like my spring joint assembly is also broken causing me to have to replace it as well-I checked online ahead of part arrival so I was sure how to do the replacement and you solved my spring removal/install issue! Thank you.
Great vid - instead of making a special tool to expand the brake band, you can remove the chain saw handle and press the part of the handle that fits into the the gear to snap it back. Then reattach the handle.
Thank you so much, ibought a chainsaw yesterday, and after only one use, i wanted to clean the chainsaw and forget to put off the brake. Now i can use it again ! :)
Thanks for the video! Had it back together in no time. Once daylight rolls around, i’ll be firing up the cutoff wheel to make the “reset tool” you’ve fabricated. Neighbors would lose their sh*t if I were to start converting mine right now...😂 Thanks again for the video! ❤️👍
Thanks for posting this. Saved me a trip to get it serviced. I have a special tool to turn in the brake cylinder on my old Fiat that looks a lot like the one you used. I'm thinking that will work. If not, I'll fabricate something. Good stuff, thanks again
Thanks for the video! After many years of running my Husky with no chainbrake I wanted to take another shot at the spring from hell. I was about to buy a replacement clutch cover but i still had all the parts, I just needed some help with the spring. By the way, instead of making the tool to reset the brake band, I just removed the clutch, replaced the side cover and moved the handle to the run position. And while the clutch is off you can grease the needle bearing!
Great video. Been using my saw without chain break so I thought I’d have another crack at fixing it before my luck ran out. Took 15 mins, cut up a 17 mm socket to reset the brake band. Repair shops must hate you for posting this vid.
Thank You for sharing! I was trying all sorts of clamps with no success 🤦🏼♂️ I was able to cut up an old shower stem removal tool and it worked perfectly 🙏🏼
Thank you for the video, I have a Husqvarna rancher 455 and my brake snapped closed when I was going to put a new chain on. I struggled, cursed &, could not get the cover back on, I could see the problem I just didn't know how to fix it. I watched your video and I had an extra adjustment tool to make one like you showed (took about 10 minutes with my 4 1/2" Makita grinder with a thin blade. Problem solved and now I have the tool if I need it again.
Thanks so much!. This worked very quickly for me. Can't believe it was so simple. Now trying to figure out why my clutch keeps sticking in brake on position.
Pretty neat tool hack with the scrench. I usually get away with holding it against the saw and using the chain brake handle, then install bar and chain. Might make one for fun. Screwdriver trick is neat as well, I'd never hold the cover in a position where I could stab my hand if it slipped though. I do mine clamped in a machinist vice wrapped in a rag with an old hydraulic fitting
thanks for this . for the life of me i couldn't figure out a way to reinstall that spring . well until now anyway lol .. thanks for teaching an old dog a new trick.
Thanks for the video, I am here because a former coworker broke our Husky saw’s chain brake because he took the side cover off with the brake on and then “just bolted it back on” in his words!
thank you for this video. we got our cover back on but went one step easier: rather than fashioning a new tool, we simply used our angle grinder's disc-change tool - it wasn't until i saw your video that i knew how much pressure to apply because i was previously afraid of breaking the mechanism.

Your video really helped, got the spring in but I was struggling with how to cock it in the unlocked position. A piece of tubing, my dremel tool and a d]set of vice grips...bingo back in business! Thanks mate!
Has anyone told you lately that YOU ARE THE MAN! I pissed around with it for an hour! Got mad af and went to bed. Your video saved my chainsaw. Thank you sir
Thanks a lot for the video. after a lot of frustration with this problem I took mine to a dealer, University Lawnmowers Center, and they had about $20.00 fee to put only the cover back on. Never go back to this place.
Thanks to you, problem solved. Luckily I only suffered about an hour trying to get that flippin' spring back in until I said to myself 'self, there's probably a youtube video on how to do this.' Muchas gracias.
Dude thank you so much for this video I've been trying get that thing in for weeks and didnt even think of something so simple. I can now go back to enjoying life lol.
update-thanks for giving me the nudge to dig into this thing... lol the spring broke where it connects to the joint assembly so I just need a spring! A lot cheaper than the joint. Thank you again!
Your video really helped! Thank you so much. I’m not sure where you got that tool that you used to reset the brake, but I used an Allen wrench to takeoff the brake handle and then used the part of the brake handle that goes into that break to turn and reset the break. It wasn’t as easy as your tool but it seems to work fine. I think you have to be careful about pushing it into far because there’s one plastic piece that stops it when you rotate it if you push it in too far. Thanks again!
Just want to echo others sentiments here. Tried to reinstall the spring after taking it apart to release the chain brake. It's needed to clean and adjust the saw. Head a heck of a time getting the cover off. At the time I did not realize it was because the chain brake was on. Then could not reinstall the cover once I was done cleaning etc. Realized it had to do with the chain brake being on. Couldn't figure out how to reset it with the cover off. So started taking things apart. Then when i had a mess i couldn't figure out how to easily get back together, i sent to UA-cam. Find a great video on how to reset the breaker but nothing about reinstalling the spring. Fought with it more. Then back to youtube and find this video. Also, to reset the breaker without the cut out tool use a 9/16 combination wrench vertically above the cam thing, engage the open end with the cam, and use a screw driver inserted into the box end to turn the can and reset the brake.
Easier way... Put the needle-nose pliers into the vice, with the gap partly open. Then, put the three prong thing over the tips, and turn the whole outer assembly like a steering-wheel. It gives you slightly less torque than the brake handle, but the brake snaps back into place real easily. See the Video: FAST AND EASY - Reset Husqvarna Chain Brake - Even One Handed!!
Two hours of screaming bloody nightmare, I decided to check online for help. After watching your video, I was able to get the spring back in in less than a minute. You are a lifesaver!!! I'm going to have a beer now because I need it.
Ha ! Only took me an hour and a half before I decided to check🤪.who woulda thought it was that simple..

Thanks for the great video, it's a pretty powerful spring on these chainbrakes.
Thank you for posting this. Could not have done it without this video
I had been fighting with this for so long. I was doing it completely backwards. Thank you so much for this video.
Very helpful. I’d only been trying for 20 minutes or so but having seen this it was done in 5 seconds. Thanks
As above ! Great video , I’m very thankful 👍
Wow. A whole-hearted thank you to you sir for this video!
Thank You for sharing! I was trying all sorts of clamps with no success 🤦🏼♂️ I was able to cut up an old shower stem removal tool and it worked perfectly 🙏🏼
Thanks for making this video. Helped out after fighting with this spring.
Thank you most sincerely for such an informative video - you saved me a trip and the cost of going to my local dealer. Your reset tool is pure genius!

Brillant...... been at it for ages and after viewing this video....... 2 minutes and done. Many Thanks
Thank you for the video, I have a Husqvarna rancher 455 and my brake snapped closed when I was going to put a new chain on. excellent idea with cutting the plug spanner down to fit the brake lugs...life saver.
Thank you for your help . Your video is very helpful. Greetings from Poland.
Dude you are AWESOME!! You have just saved me some wear and tare and kept me from sinning!! Thanks again!
Most appreciated sir, you saved me a lot of time and frustration. Thank you.
thanks for this . for the life of me i couldn't figure out a way to reinstall that spring . well until now anyway lol .. thanks for teaching an old dog a new trick.
Thanks man, you're a life saver. I was about to start brute-forcing it.
Dude, you rock. I made the same tool that you have and got my chainsaw up and running. Thank you
Love your scrench - I've one exactly the same. Made to do the same job!
Thanks for the video, I am here because a former coworker broke our Husky saw’s chain brake because he took the side cover off with the brake on and then “just bolted it back on” in his words!
You just saved me a trip to the shop. Merry Xmas from Canada 🍻
thank you for this video. we got our cover back on but went one step easier: rather than fashioning a new tool, we simply used our angle grinder's disc-change tool - it wasn't until i saw your video that i knew how much pressure to apply because i was previously afraid of breaking the mechanism.
Man you're a life saver. Just the video I needed. My husky 550xp has a different setup but the same tip worked!!!
Excellent.
Happened on my husky saw.
Had trouble removing cover as chain brake was on.
Had saw jammed in a branch cut,i thought I'd damaged something.
I have a spark plug remover like yours.
Making the tool.
Thanks.
This is how I do it in the shop. Easiest way ever. Smart guy
Thanks, you saved my weekend! The scrench part was genius! Well done video too.
Your video really helped, got the spring in but I was struggling with how to cock it in the unlocked position. A piece of tubing, my dremel tool and a d]set of vice grips...bingo back in business! Thanks mate!
This is shear genius! Thank you for saving me from putting my eye out!
Wish I had seen this 2 days ago. My spring had jumped out, and I spent over an hour getting it back in.
Has anyone told you lately that
YOU ARE THE MAN!
Never go back to this place.
thank you my friend. been beating my hands all to heck for an hour now. now i know. again, thank you.
Great piece. Good tips Struggled for hrs before - thanks !!!
I love you. I just wasted an hour and the solution was so simple
update-thanks for giving me the nudge to dig into this thing... lol the spring broke where it connects to the joint assembly so I just need a spring! A lot cheaper than the joint. Thank you again!
Saved by a 7 year old video. Thank you Internet stranger.
Wow thank you I was screwing around with it for about a half hour until I saw your video brilliant

I think you have to be careful about pushing it into far because there’s one plastic piece that stops it when you rotate it if you push it in too far. Thanks again!
First rate! Could not have done this without this video.
thank you so much! I have a husqvarna 240 model chainsaw and I have broken brake belt. Your video Is very good!
Thanks for the video made a wrench just like yours worked great
Thank you ! I making a socket like yours also.
Thank you. I was considering just running the saw without the brake spring.
Glad I'm not going to do that now.
Whoever you are thank you 🙏🏼
THAT is good stuff! Thank you for sharing!
My knuckles thank you and I thank you...10 min to make the tool 2 seconds to open the brake...You are the best...Thanks friend.
Thank you! I wish I had watched this video two hours ago.
thanks so much ,spent hours trying to fix ,saw your vid made the tool and fixed in less tan 10 min THANK YOU
Easier way... Put the needle-nose pliers into the vice, with the gap partly open. Then, put the three prong thing over the tips, and turn the whole outer assembly like a steering-wheel. It gives you slightly less torque than the brake handle, but the brake snaps back into place real easily.

That *is* a good idea. The modified scrench solution works in the field though.
