Two hours of screaming bloody nightmare, I decided to check online for help. After watching your video, I was able to get the spring back in in less than a minute. You are a lifesaver!!! I'm going to have a beer now because I need it.
I ran it for the rest of the day without the spring installed because the tree wasn't going to buck itself...then I went looking for some clever fella like this guy once the saw was cold.
Like everyone else that said Thank you! Your knowledge of this spring assembly is so much power that you don’t even know. I thank you immensely on posting this video. You sir could do what others could not do. This video helped so much to get my chainsaw back in working order. Now I am going to use my chainsaw until it breaks again. Hopefully you will be making videos of other problems with chainsaws so then I can absorb your teachings. Once again thank you thank you thank you.
I can't thank you enough for this vid. I found myself trying literally for hours to get that damn spring in, then I copied your home made tool! Great video extremely helpful
This guy covers some great ways to get it back on without making that tool: ua-cam.com/video/vYr-jU94yAI/v-deo.html I actually got it to work by pushing the cover right next to the chainsaw brake handle and disengaging the brake by pressing the gears together.
@@truthwillsetyoufree8252 thanks for adding this link- the 7/16 wrench in a vice did it for me- of course, would have never gotten to that point without this video--first time I ever hit 2 great you tube videos without traveling through a mile of garbage videos! It went so well I may break it again just cause I can fix it----no, I'll break something new!
Thank you for the video, I have a Husqvarna rancher 455 and my brake snapped closed when I was going to put a new chain on. I struggled, cursed &, could not get the cover back on, I could see the problem I just didn't know how to fix it. I watched your video and I had an extra adjustment tool to make one like you showed (took about 10 minutes with my 4 1/2" Makita grinder with a thin blade. Problem solved and now I have the tool if I need it again.
This video deserves a million thumbs up. I fought that brake for half an hour. After watching this video, I had the entire saw back together in ten minutes. THANKS!
Thank you so much, ibought a chainsaw yesterday, and after only one use, i wanted to clean the chainsaw and forget to put off the brake. Now i can use it again ! :)
Great vid - instead of making a special tool to expand the brake band, you can remove the chain saw handle and press the part of the handle that fits into the the gear to snap it back. Then reattach the handle.
Thanks so much!. This worked very quickly for me. Can't believe it was so simple. Now trying to figure out why my clutch keeps sticking in brake on position.
Thanks for the screwdriver idea. I watched another video on how to get the cover back on without that tool. You can actually put it on by pushing the cover really close to the chansaw brake handle and disengaging it by making contact with the gear switch thing.
Thank you so much for this video. I had exactly this issue - couldn't figure out how to get the spring back in after taking it to bits to clean. Thought I'd just have to leave the spring out and do without the chainbrake. Brilliant stuff.
I had good luck using the tip of a plumb bob to push the spring back in after I couldn’t find a screwdriver with the right amount of taper, just as an alternative to anyone encountering the same issue. Excellent video though man, really helped me out a lot! Glad there are people like you who dedicate some of their time to freely sharing their knowledge with the rest of us.
Oh what a lifesaver you are sir. I was facing a weekend with no heating, light was fading, no logs, chainsaw shop closed, a miserable couple of days hiding under my duvet in prospect. A desperate youtube search, an angle grinder, and a butchered spark plug spanner later and the world is rosy again. Cannot thank you enough.
I was out there, screaming and cursing and trying to make it work. The damn scrench has that cut-out in it now. I had no idea what it was for until I found your video. Lifesaver.
Brilliant thank you. As has been said by so many others, this is such a perfect video. i followed this to get the spring back in. Before I saw this I was trying to get everything back in with the spring attached. Saved loads of frustration.
Easier way... Put the needle-nose pliers into the vice, with the gap partly open. Then, put the three prong thing over the tips, and turn the whole outer assembly like a steering-wheel. It gives you slightly less torque than the brake handle, but the brake snaps back into place real easily. See the Video: FAST AND EASY - Reset Husqvarna Chain Brake - Even One Handed!!
Thanks for posting this. Saved me a trip to get it serviced. I have a special tool to turn in the brake cylinder on my old Fiat that looks a lot like the one you used. I'm thinking that will work. If not, I'll fabricate something. Good stuff, thanks again
OMG thank you for this video, I just disassembled my break for my chainsaw and been struggling to reassemble it, till I found your video ✅💯💞🤩 Again Thank you.
Thanks for the video! Had it back together in no time. Once daylight rolls around, i’ll be firing up the cutoff wheel to make the “reset tool” you’ve fabricated. Neighbors would lose their sh*t if I were to start converting mine right now...😂 Thanks again for the video! ❤️👍
Like virtually all who posted comments, please accept my confession to have “unsuccessfully” screwed around with large pair of channel-locks, then searched online tor 3 min, watched your video for 3 min and had saw running less than 5min later ! Kudos for wrench modification tip as well !! Much appreciation incl thumbs- up and subscription to boost your audience. Thanks and Best of Success
Pretty neat tool hack with the scrench. I usually get away with holding it against the saw and using the chain brake handle, then install bar and chain. Might make one for fun. Screwdriver trick is neat as well, I'd never hold the cover in a position where I could stab my hand if it slipped though. I do mine clamped in a machinist vice wrapped in a rag with an old hydraulic fitting
Thank You for sharing! I was trying all sorts of clamps with no success 🤦🏼♂️ I was able to cut up an old shower stem removal tool and it worked perfectly 🙏🏼
Brilliant. Very clearly explained and filmed. After half an hour of frustration, spring flying into my eye, etc., you made it easy. Took a while to make the tool but well worth it.
Thank you! I just replaced my broken HANDLE and then discovered I still can't get my cover on. It looks like my spring joint assembly is also broken causing me to have to replace it as well-I checked online ahead of part arrival so I was sure how to do the replacement and you solved my spring removal/install issue! Thank you.
Thank god for you, even the same model chainsaw that i have, 2 hours I tried to get that bloody spring back, watched you video and pop, done in 30 sec. Can I send you money or my first born? Oh and am I going to make a scrench!
I have blood all over my hands and I’ve shot the stupid spring across the garage three times. I’m a little in love with you that you made this video. 😂🤣 Seriously, though, bro. Thank you so much for this.
Has anyone told you lately that YOU ARE THE MAN! I pissed around with it for an hour! Got mad af and went to bed. Your video saved my chainsaw. Thank you sir
Thanks a lot for the video. after a lot of frustration with this problem I took mine to a dealer, University Lawnmowers Center, and they had about $20.00 fee to put only the cover back on. Never go back to this place.
Great video. Been using my saw without chain break so I thought I’d have another crack at fixing it before my luck ran out. Took 15 mins, cut up a 17 mm socket to reset the brake band. Repair shops must hate you for posting this vid.
I just thought I'd add here the easiest way without making special tools to reset the brake is to just take the brake handle off the saw body and cock the spring in a vice-- 2 bolts to take off the brake lever. I have a 445... YMMV
No need to use a welder or modify the tool to move the lobe to the proper position. The cheap and easy way is to buy a 3/4 x 3/4 x 1/2 copper tee. On the 1/2 inch side easy to cut soft copper to match the lobes. Run a broom stick handle through it and turn. Easy peasy!
Just want to echo others sentiments here. Tried to reinstall the spring after taking it apart to release the chain brake. It's needed to clean and adjust the saw. Head a heck of a time getting the cover off. At the time I did not realize it was because the chain brake was on. Then could not reinstall the cover once I was done cleaning etc. Realized it had to do with the chain brake being on. Couldn't figure out how to reset it with the cover off. So started taking things apart. Then when i had a mess i couldn't figure out how to easily get back together, i sent to UA-cam. Find a great video on how to reset the breaker but nothing about reinstalling the spring. Fought with it more. Then back to youtube and find this video. Also, to reset the breaker without the cut out tool use a 9/16 combination wrench vertically above the cam thing, engage the open end with the cam, and use a screw driver inserted into the box end to turn the can and reset the brake.
I ended up sacrificing an old spade bit because I dont have a big enough screw driver. Something with a handle would have helped a lot, but I managed to get it back in. Thank you!!
update-thanks for giving me the nudge to dig into this thing... lol the spring broke where it connects to the joint assembly so I just need a spring! A lot cheaper than the joint. Thank you again!
Yep....that was me just yesterday...took it off the chainsaw for a cleanup and left the brake activated....could not put it back on for good hour before finaly managed to move the tree-piece metal thing and reset the brake
Yes, want to thank you too. Bought new, shipped it to Costa Rica, and then we couldn't reassemble it due to the spring. We are now cutting one of those tools (as I write) to be able to set it back to the open position. We too were going to just leave the spring out, until I found your video. What a help this has been.
The reason there is a problem in the first place the spring is to strong . I fixed mine cut some off the spring . It’s to strong for the plastic . Handel now it works great.
If you don’t have the special wrench to disengage brake all you have to do is take off the two Allen screws to take the brake handle off. Use it as your tool, it works fine
Did the same thing yesterday. Took the spring cover off to remove the brake band so that i could put the cover back on (chain brake disengaged as band isn't hooked into the cover) and use the hand lever on the saw to disengage it. Almost works, but the spring pops out. I then spend an hour or two putting the spring back in. I then spend a good part of the day trying to figure out how to disengage the brake. I finally just put the cover back on and bolt it down and loosen it a bit at at time and attempt to use the hand lever. It eventually works, when I presume the pressure on the band is less than the engagement of the lever mechanism. However I had an issue where the chain I had sharpened was binding for some reason, but only when the case is completely tightened . . I grind the teeth with a dremel as I noticed they were a bit boogered. Same issue. I switch back the the orginal good (dull) chain . Same issue. Turns out the band isn't completely set into the cover from my prior issue. Quick fix, but I was about ready to introduce it to the 8lb maul by this point.
The only downfall I see is that you didn't make mention that the wrench you used to set the chain brake was either a special wrench or an altered scrench.
thanks for this . for the life of me i couldn't figure out a way to reinstall that spring . well until now anyway lol .. thanks for teaching an old dog a new trick.
Thanks to you, problem solved. Luckily I only suffered about an hour trying to get that flippin' spring back in until I said to myself 'self, there's probably a youtube video on how to do this.' Muchas gracias.
Thanks for the video, I am here because a former coworker broke our Husky saw’s chain brake because he took the side cover off with the brake on and then “just bolted it back on” in his words!
Cheers mate ya just saved me ! Been messi g round with that for few hours the other day , lost work then but im ready go tomorrow thaks to you nd my new spnerratchit whats it . ❤ frm Australia
Thank you, Sir - it was fixed in a minute after spending hours and getting fingers snapped by the spring popping out. I used a needle nose pliers to push the spring in - it was easier to remove once the spring caught the edge of the cover than the screwdrivers I have. The saw is ready to go, just in time for my Fall yard clean up. Again, thanks much!
This looks like a good way to ram a screwdriver into your hand. Bad idea. Instead wear strong gloves or better still clamp the cover down with a soft cloth under a block.
To my fellow DYI'ers watch to the end or you will be back to watch it again....Thanks for the informative video...I should have come in to get some help sooner....now back to work...
It worked on a craftsman, just be careful the spring is very strong. I wore face shield and gloves. I didn't know how i will compress the spring. This is a great video. Thanks
the chainsaw brand I am putting back together is poulan but the same principle applied. This solution is so simple and quick, I had been struggling for an hour... Thank you so much.
Excellent. Happened on my husky saw. Had trouble removing cover as chain brake was on. Had saw jammed in a branch cut,i thought I'd damaged something. I have a spark plug remover like yours. Making the tool. Thanks.
Husky 440 I had not installed the cover plate over the spring assembly and I launched the spring into the dark realm of my work shed. lol I came inside and found your video and laughed at your warning regarding the spring. I will attempt to find the spring tomorrow. Great video!!!
I was ready to take my saw to the shop today, because I did make the mistake of taking the cover off with the brake on. I also removed the spring and couldn't work out how to put it back on. Now I can try to put it back together myself, thanks to this great video. I'll have to make that little tool first to reset the brake. Thanks very much. I've subscribed.
Awesome! I had the break on! About 30 minutes trying to figure out how it went back on. The tool idea was great. Cutting wheel and an extra wrench a small vice grip to bend back in business! Thanks
Two thumbs up for a great video. I often give bad reviews/comments on videos because most waste time on verbal diarrhea. Great job giving all the necessary information on getting the spring back and setting the brake.
Two hours of screaming bloody nightmare, I decided to check online for help. After watching your video, I was able to get the spring back in in less than a minute. You are a lifesaver!!! I'm going to have a beer now because I need it.
Ha ! Only took me an hour and a half before I decided to check🤪.who woulda thought it was that simple..
I ran it for the rest of the day without the spring installed because the tree wasn't going to buck itself...then I went looking for some clever fella like this guy once the saw was cold.

Mate, you made this so easy, and your choice of tools - perfect, went back together like a charm.
You legend

Well.... I snapped the white plastic trying this.... And now I'm off to make a knee joint wrench.
I used a 5/16 (8mm) combination wrench with a screwdriver through the box end as a handle and snapped the brake deal back in.

Husqvarna makes a tool for reinstalling the spring, but
watching this video shows it can be done with a screwdriver!

Always take advice from someone who's sacrificed a body part for the cause. They've learnt the hard way!
Thanks man, you're a life saver. I was about to start brute-forcing it.
And anyone taking the clutch cover off with an engaged brake should give up their saw to their neighbor lol
Sean Boyer until you break the lever off with the brake engaged.
Did the same thing yesterday. Thank you. I was considering just running the saw without the brake spring.
Glad I'm not going to do that now.
Dude, you rock. I made the same tool that you have and got my chainsaw up and running. Thank you
You just saved me a trip to the shop. Merry Xmas from Canada 🍻
Thanks for the great video, it's a pretty powerful spring on these chainbrakes.
Thanks for the video made a wrench just like yours worked great
The spring is two strong cut some off . The chin brake Still work
My own chain brake is in the trash. I have also a 30 year old Poulan that cut godzillonns of cords of wood with no chain brake.
You solved my exact problem,, thanks
The only downfall I see is that you didn't make mention that the wrench you used to set the chain brake was either a special wrench or an altered scrench.
My dad has a 435 but it has so much compression he has hard time pull starting it. Is there any solution to make it pull easier?
thanks for this . for the life of me i couldn't figure out a way to reinstall that spring . well until now anyway lol .. thanks for teaching an old dog a new trick.
And the chainsaw brake works great. And stops the chain .
This is shear genius! Thank you for saving me from putting my eye out!
Wow. A whole-hearted thank you to you sir for this video!
I love you. I just wasted an hour and the solution was so simple
Thanks so much. I made the tool and it was then easy.
Saved by a 7 year old video. Thank you Internet stranger.
Thank you! I wish I had watched this video two hours ago.
First rate! Could not have done this without this video.
Very helpful thank you
Great video, thankyou.
I used a bolt cutter to cut the spring . Works great 😊
Thanks to you, problem solved.
Хоть и нет русского перевода, всё понятно 🥳🥳🥳🥳
Thank you. I was struggling so bad
Thank you. This saved the day
Cheers mate ya just saved me ! Been messi g round with that for few hours the other day , lost work then but im ready go tomorrow thaks to you nd my new spnerratchit whats it . ❤ frm Australia
P/s . I pulled a muscle in my neck trying to pull that thing round with a cord looped round it .
Thank you, Sir - it was fixed in a minute after spending hours and getting fingers snapped by the spring popping out. I used a needle nose pliers to push the spring in - it was easier to remove once the spring caught the edge of the cover than the screwdrivers I have. This looks like a good way to ram a screwdriver into your hand. Bad idea. Instead wear strong gloves or better still clamp the cover down with a soft cloth under a block.
If you watch and listen closely I pay particular attention to the shape of screwdriver, specifically to avoid the issue of the screwdriver slipping!
Thanks

Had saw jammed in a branch cut,i thought I'd damaged something.
I have a spark plug remover like yours.
Making the tool.
Thanks.
Whoever you are thank you 🙏🏼
thaaaaannnnnnkkkkkkssss you !!!!!
Husky 440 I had not installed the cover plate over the spring assembly and I launched the spring into the dark realm of my work shed. lol I came inside and found your video and laughed at your warning regarding the spring. I will attempt to find the spring tomorrow. Great video!!!
Man you're a life saver. Just the video I needed. My husky 550xp has a different setup but the same tip worked!!!
Yeah but be careful not to loose a thumb doing it.
Thanks for this video
Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou!!!
Excellent...THANKS!
