Splodge & Scribble videos are my favorite! It makes me think of the joy of creating vs. perfectionism that keeps me locked up from trying to paint at all. Thank you for all that you share! I love seeing all of your videos! They are a peaceful companion to me as I am battling leukemia this year. I appreciate the calm and happy company of your videos. I’ve learned so much from you! ❤
I'm so sorry you're having to go through that! I wish you all the very best outcomes, and the resilience to cope with it all. I can't even imagine all the range of emotions you must go through. I hope you can overcome the perfectionism thing too - it's been an interesting journey for me, and I'm definitely not free from it, but I'm getting to enjoy art much more nowadays.
All 3 pieces turned out great! That gouache painting is quite impressive considering it wasn’t pure gouache and you had to mix every colour from watercolour. I wasn’t sure if the opacity would be lost too much. I’ve done the occasional watercolour + white gouache mixture when I’ve been doing a watercolour painting, so that I can get some lights on top, but I’ve never done an entire painting using white gouache and watercolour. Perfect for travelling light! I’ve never really thought about it, but didn’t realize you’d have to worry about melting neocolour ii’s!!
Thanks! The gouache is definitely better mixed with tube watercolour paint, but yes, I figured if I got the urge for gouache while away, this was better than nothing. I've also been recommending the white gouache + watercolour to people who are perhaps interested in trying out gouache, but don't want to invest in a load of tubes. I've never had the Neocolors melt before, but I did leave them in full sun. They became totally unworkable!
LOL for the paintbrush accidentally ending up in your tea! But at least your bottom stayed dry painting on the blanket instead of trampoline 😂 I love that your vacation is a relaxed pace so you get lots of art time. My favorite is the last one with the gouache experiment.
Blitz is quite the attentive hostess. I do believe she wanted to be in the gouache/watercolor picture. No paint session is complete without the old paintbrush in the tea. I think it's somehow a rite of passage into the world of watercolor.😀 Thanks for sharing. Love to watch your splodge and scribble sessions.
I love all 3 of your paintings. Your last video inspired me to try out the Stillman and Birn Nova so I’m waiting for that to arrive hopefully today or tomorrow. You are in such a gorgeous setting and what lovely weather for you. I love your experimental creativity. That’s nice that you have Blitz to keep you company. It’s a beautiful house and those rose bushes are so gorgeous. I hope you have a wonderful time. That’s too funny about the tea - I’ve done that too! 😂
I love your videos Helen! Thank you for so many ideas to paint things. I’m a little jealous because I’ve always wanted to visits an area like that. lol
This was a great heads up for me regarding the neo colors melting and going sticky. Usually I'm only thinking about how my paint is drying too quickly in summer. I hate the summer heat here, especially when it's humid, so sticky me plus sticky art materials will only add to my hate of it 🥵😂I do really like the results you got though. Your gouache painting is lovely, I do think that a bit of urban sketching with gouache should be my next thing to try. Today I'm swatching all my gouache paints into my Nova book and it's actually quite nice outside today, if a little bit cold. I've just noticed one thing while swatching. I added a bit much water to my last color swatch (I forgot to wipe off the excess after I cleaned my brush), and when the water went through the page it activated the gouache on the other side too. I wish the Nova paper was as thick as the Beta paper. I know this is Sarah Burn's favorite gouache paper but it isn't mine so far 😂This might become a colored pencil, pastel pencil and charcoal book for me and my gouache will stay in my Beta book. I like using the calligraphy pen in the alpha book because of the contrast against the white paper but the right subject might look good on toned paper too 🤷♀
Yes, the Beta paper is fabulous! I try to keep my gouache pretty dry, so hopefully it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I can see that the Nova is going to work beautifully with other media too though!!
Lovely……more s&s 🎉,both of which are beautiful,I love so much how the ink brings it all to life. Thank you so much 🙏 for sharing the gouache mixing , what a beautiful little picture you did with the mixes,I’ll check out the linked video later, can’t wait to give this a go. Enjoy that tea! 😂
Hi Helen, Thankyou so much for these gorgeous paintings, I was hoping you would do more as that is such a beautiful house, I’m so envious that you have a chance to paint it. Really makes me want to get my gouache out and play! Thankyou for sharing, take care and enjoy your holiday xx
Really liked your colousketches especially the 2 nd house & small sketch. A really good looking building! So glad the weather is being agreeable! Didn’t expect to see you again so soon. A nice surprise! Thanks for sharing again. Thanks.
@@helencryer Friends & friendship is so important. I‘m in touch today with 2 friends who grew up on my ( our street ), I‘ll be 75 next month & they were at my 4 th birthday party! And, we no longer live in the same countries!
Fab, great video. I actually just rewatched the one you did in France last year, and then I found you splodge and scribbling in Cambridgeshire! Thanks Helen 😀
It's 90° F here in the Chicago area. I'm seriously thinking of putting the Neocolor IIs into the refrigerator.😊. I do agree with you about the lack of opaqueness with the Neocolor II White, and have resorted to using either the Faber-Castell PITT artist pen white 101 or the Pentel Presto Fine Point Jumbo Correction Pen. Thank you for you 'splodge & scribble' videos. They're fun and lovely!
I bet your friend is absolutely thrilled with all the versions of their farmhouse! It's not often you get a "resident artist" in the house 😆. All three paintings have so much character. I wish I could loosen up like this. I'm all about the details when I absolutely don't mean to be. V frustrating. Also, still awaiting my Neocolour IIs from Amazon but I live in Australia and even in winter we're pretty warm so I'm wondering how they're going to go. Can't wait to try though 😃. Thanks for another one and keeping me entertained 👍🏻😎
Haha! - the husband of the couple is a bit frustrated I'm doing them in sketchbooks instead of on loose paper so he could keep one! I still do struggle with the detail thing. Finding ways to limit how much detail I can add (time limit, large mediums, copying from something less detailed in the first place, doing the splodge later first) has helped me a bit though. It's the first time this happened to my Neocolors, and they were in full sun for quite a while. As soon as I moved to shade they improved, so I'd just say keep them in shade.
Beautiful! I love how you use the colored pencils for detail I never realized that the neocolor II’s would soften with the heat,, but it makes sense being wax based. It really did look like oil pastels. Very nice effect. Your mixing of the gouache with watercolor was very interesting and that piece turned out really nice.
My favorite was the second painting/drawing. Really loved that amount of detail. Are you going to add some details to the third image? I felt a little bit was missing. Still, beautiful work!

I really love the neocolor2 painting of the farmhouse, you’ve captured the hot sunshine so well with your tones!😍
Thank you!
I love your gouache sketches, the colours really pop against the beige paper. And the loose effect of the sticks is so effective x
Thank you!
