As a Tour Guide @ Globe Life Field, who wasn’t yet here in Texas back in the days the Rangers played in their 1st home, Arlington Stadium, this is such a jewel for me to learn more of the history and events that took place in that 1st ballpark. Thank you so much for posting and I look forward to sharing some of the moments talked about in this segment with new Rangers fans as they come into the Rangers’ current home.
Thanks for posting this. I went to my first MLB game at Arlington Stadium, I'm not sure when, probably 1989 or maybe 1990. I know the last game I attended at Arlington Stadium was on my 12th birthday, August 28, 1993. I almost got a foul ball from Juan Gonzalez at that game.
I remember when I was a little kid my dad told me about the old Arlington Stadium, and in a few years I'll be telling my son about the old Ballpark In Arlington
Love it! Took me back that's for sure, even with the technicalities of the video quality. Also like that you included the commercials in it as well..........and last but not least, who would have remembered that a severe thunderstorm was going through the Dallas area at the time it aired. Thanks for posting this!
I was born in 1972. Same year the Rangers came to Texas. I literally grew up with the Rangers. So many memories, Nolan, Charlie, Pudge, Juan Gone, Beuchele, Pete O’brien, Ruben, it just goes on and on. Not to mention channel 5 news with Scott Murray on sports, Scott Chesner’s weather reports. Harold Taft passed away just a couple of years earlier. Jane McGarry and Mike Snyder doing the news, wow, seems like yesterday.
Jeff Burroughs, Bert Blyleven, Mike Hargrove, Tom Grieve, Toby Harrah, Claudell Washington, Ferguson Jenkins, Gaylord Perry, Sparky Lyle, Buddy Bell, Bert Campaneris, Willie Horton, David Clyde, Bump Wills, etc. etc. The good old days.
My dad owned a restaurant called Khaki's Fresh Food off Little Road in Arlington. One of my earliest memories was one night after work, he took me to this ballpark and parked in the parking lot and proceeded to tell me stories about it and The Rangers. Told me the next day it would be demolished. Miss you pops and thanks for the memories.
I used to go to khakis every week with my dad. Spent many a night playing street fighter and eating potato nachos there. My dad let me choose the name of the order because they called it out over the PA so I always chose something goofy. I miss the hell out of that place! Sorry to hear about your pops, i had many great memories with my own father there and the ballpark.
And last yr, I learned you can listen to Ranger games if you're in South Arkansas. And after looking just now, you can listen to them in parts of western AR and even LR.
Naming the new stadium "The Ballpark in Arlington," was the SMARTEST thing they ever did! We get SICK AND TIRED of having idiot "sportscasters" talk about everything being in Fort Worth or Dallas!
What's tiresome is having these corporations smear their logo feces all over everything. The Ballpark in Arlington is a nice change from Conglom-O stadium, or what have you.
We went with the worst choice a easily confused corporate sponsorship ie im glad they are moving from globe life park I can’t wait to see a game in globe life field...
This was originally a farm league stadium I'm assuming. I lived in Dallas for a few years ('82-84') and was able to take in a few games. I love all baseball stadiums, because to me, they all have a personality. This one certainly did-I love that it was expanded from it's original size, and they still used it.
24:06 "The Ballpark In Arlington was built to outlast all of us". 25 years later - Yeah these 2:05 games in the middle of summer suck. Let's build a new stadium and get outta here.
The ballpark in Arlington was the best stadium in baseball. I say this as an Astros fan who visited a few times to watch my friend pitch against the Rangers. It's a shame they replaced it with a giant ugly warehouse just like we have in Houston. I say this as a licensed architect. Baseball is not meant to be played in a warehouse, I don't care how hot it gets (I say this as a super pale dude who played amateur summer baseball in Houston). The interesting thing is in 2023 games are being played like 30 minutes faster so I bet those hot summer games wouldn't be nearly as bad for fans now.
Fenway Park is 106 years old, and the Red Sox paid millions of dollars for renovations. The owners think it will reach the end of its usefulness in 2061.
I would love to see more old footage from the first few years of the Rangers existence. I was 11 years old when the Senators became the Rangers and would listen to the games on WBAP. I can still hear Dick Risenhoover and Bill Merrill calling the games, but very few games were televised and none of the home games were on TV. Tom Grieve was my favorite position player and Steve Foucault was my favorite pitcher. He looked a lot like Fred Flintstone...LOL. And Tom was really a nice guy to we kids who'd bother the players for autographs. I'm glad he's the voice of the Rangers on TV nowadays but I have a feeling he'd have made a good manager too. I'd also love to see old footage of Rangers like Joe Lovitto, Rich Billings, Jim Panther and Don Stanhouse. Ah, the '70s. I sure do miss them.
I remember Bob Short raped the city of Washington. They still had attendance problems in year one so bad, that he wanted to move back to DC but was binded to a lease he signed when he moved. They only broke 1 million at the game after he sold the team. If you want to hear the DC viewpoint read "Kiss It Goodbye by Shelby Whitefield"
They aren't demolishing it, just using it for something else. Still, it's pretty stupid as it is still in excellent condition. DFW hates its own history.
I saw my first game here in 1982 vs the Detroit Tigers. So many memories. Like sitting in right field, and beating the crap out of those old aluminum bleachers with those mini wooden bats. Lets Go Rangers. Charge!!!
These were really dark days for the Rangers. They never made the postseason once in that stadium and were almost always near the last of the pack. Arlington Stadium was not very good at all as a stadium. No amenities, bad sight lines, miserably hot with no shade in the Texas heat.
when jimmy johnson was his 5 and final year as the head coach of the dallas cowboys from the year when i was born 1989 until the year 1993 with 2 time super bowl champions when the man himself was the head coach of the same team the dallas cowboys number 2 after tom landry with the hat on and before barry switzer.
Could have been a really good piece but Scott Murray seemed know nothing about the Rangers and what the history was behind them. He kept looking at his notes for certain things that he should have known. My other complaint is that it was prefaced as "The History Of Arlington Stadium". It had nothing to do with any of the other events that occurred there. I guess when you have the Cowboys the Rangers will always come in second. Good luck with the new stadium DFW.

I'll never forget my first Texas Rangers game in September of 1990, could have stayed there the rest of my life

You’re a month older than me

Facts
The wait is over the Rangers finally did it!! You're not dreaming they are 2023 World Series Champions!!!!🎉

God this is so good. I became a Rangers fan in 2001 when we got games broadcast in Arkansas on FSN. Can’t believe they’re in a dome now.
And last yr, I learned you can listen to Ranger games if you're in South Arkansas.
And after looking just now, you can listen to them in parts of western AR and even LR.
Rangers have been in existence for 60 years and have had 3 stadiums
I had something like this in cassette form. It was a give-away at the stadium. I think I wore the tape out as many times as I listened to it.
Man, I miss Mark Holtz....gone way too soon...
I do too. I actually preferred to listen to the Rangers games on the radio back then over watching them on TV.
My brother Richard's favorite team , his favorite players were Richie Zisk , Toby Harrah , Buddy Bell , Pat Putnam and Jim Sundberg 👍
Thanks for keeping the commercials!! Memories!!
Naming the new stadium "The Ballpark in Arlington," was the SMARTEST thing they ever did! We get SICK AND TIRED of having idiot "sportscasters" talk about everything being in Fort Worth or Dallas!
Being from Dallas, I don't want the Rangers and Dallas being in the same sentence.

and to think, in about 4 years The Ballpark will be gone. stadiums don't last long anymore.
Justin R something better in its place
Globe Life Field isn't actually going to be demolished, just repurposed.
"Money, it's a gas..."

The last year of Arlington Stadium was also the last year for Nolan Ryan

It is so silly that they need a new stadium after only 25 years. Target Field better be around for a long, long time.
Fenway Park is 106 years old, and the Red Sox paid millions of dollars for renovations. The owners think it will reach the end of its usefulness in 2061.
The place was like sitting in a giant hibachi grill in the summer, but we loved it anyway. Great memories.
Lots of great memories at Arlington stadium…. And that many more at the ballpark…. Somehow I can’t see me ever going to the new one though.

Can't believe the Ballpark was only used for only 25 years
26.
So was the next one too . That was the ball park at Arlington. I believe
I can’t believe it was even open air in the first place.
I don’t live in Texas but that heat had to have been brutal in that stadium .
And now they are world series champions
the home of the texas rangers for 22 years at arlington stadium in arlington tx from 1972 - 1993
Well Sisters.. they finally did it ,.. their WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS
Pre President/Governor W; Radighan with that thick accent; Scott Murray, Mark Holtz; Much younger Chuck Morgan.
The old frying pan
"Been designed to outlast all of us"
Then proceeds to knock the stadium down after about 25 years.
Alex B 36 sad when in reality, we will outlast the ballpark. Hopefully Globe Life Field will last longer than 20 years.
They aren't demolishing it, just using it for something else. Still, it's pretty stupid as it is still in excellent condition. DFW hates its own history.

I got to see a game in their first year 1972. I remember it was against Detroit. I have the program somewhere.
And unfortunately next season will be it's last season. It will end it's service after 25 years. Well, that's one fourth of 100 years.
the good old days
texas rangers has 3 stadiums in arlington tx in the dallas fort worth area.
Do a special on the Sportatotium. It was a Dallas institution.❤️
Rangers and Braves get new stadiums all the time
