Thanks for this interview and coverage. We came up from the Houston area for the 50th anniversary not knowing if David was going to be honored. We were not disappointed. I was a 13 year old kid back then trying desperately to pickup the faint radio coverage from the metroplex. Thank you Rangers and thank you David for graciously signing my old Rangers jersey.
I live in Detroit and am a diehard tigers fan. I never heard of Mr Clyde til I was watching the Tigers at the rangers and it happened to be David Clyde night. I heard the backstory and saw this incredible interview and what a classy good man. The rangers did him awful! What a great video about a great man!
I was one of the 53 million at the stadium sitting in the centerfield "nosebleed" seats. Yes I remember the traffic jam. I grew up in a West Texas town of 2000 folks. You might see 20 cars jammed up to see Friday Night Football. We were worried about missing the first pitch crawling alone at 3 mph, but the game was delayed to allow us stragglers to get seated. We were one row from the top in center field when the first pitch came. I was not disappointed the first inning of play. He was one year older than I, yet he threw the ball so hard that it sounded like a rifle shot in the top of the stadium. What a thrill to hear the catchers mitt pop. I was flabbergasted that the ball could be heard so loudly that distance from home plate. And finally, I remember the home run off him. For a moment it was like our super hero was falling to earth, but then he went on to fly by striking out the side. Decade later my friends from the Permian Basin Oilfields would tell how they attended the first Rolling Stone, Eagles concert, or such in DFW. I would stick my chest out to say: I was there June 27 when high schooler, David Clyde, made his debut!
Had he been in the minors all of '73, '74, '75, establishing control, learning the craft, he would have commenced a stellar career around 1976. The kid had raw talent.
Billy Martin was a sociopath & alcoholic whom very few players got along with. He should have been given the opportunity to develop his craft at least with a brief stint in the minors. Whst a shame.
al kaline went right to the majors. never played in the minor leagues. clyde wasn't ready to be in the majors. should of went to the minors. maybe he wasn't good enough to be in the majors. a lot of players are good in hs or college but never make the majors.
Clyde is A Texas Ranger Legend
I am proud to have a Dave Clyde card in my 1975 O Pee Chee baseball set !! 👍⚾
David Clyde is a class act and a fine man.

Great interview. Didn't know this guy's story. Seems like a profoundly humble dude.
It’s a shame how that owner ruined him for a quick buck.
I'm a Rangers fan for life I never heard this story wow

53 million, that is one big stadium.
I remember David Clyde!!!

he would have commenced a stellar career around 1976.
The kid had raw talent.
Tigers did the same thing to the Bird! The almighty dollar always comes first.
I hope times have changed with rushing kids into the majors when they're not ready?
Bird was ready to pitch.
But not ready off the field.
Lots and lots of late nights.
the bird had a torn rotor cuff that wasn't found until years later.
Being a 68-year old grandfather and doggie daddy
is ultimately far more important than baseball.
Nose-hairs and balding already, at the tender age of 18 ..to say that this dude matured early would be an understatement.
The only Baseball club who didn't celebrate Pride month. My new favorite team. I hate the LA Dodgers.
"Pride Month" ? LOL You mean, "Mentally-ill Month"
I think I saw him pitch at Angel Stadium that season. 🤔
Big ron luciano is in the picture good umpire those days
The great whitey herzog said it was the worst injustice he ever saw in his mlb career.

Now they have a world championship
The Texas Rangers did him dirty
