  • Almost full service on my XT1200Z. We will replace:
    -Oil
    -Oil filter
    -Air filter
    -Spark plugs
    -Brake pads
    -final gear oil (shaft)
    To be clear when I add silicone this is the solution used most of the time to prevent water leaking in but it is your decision if you want to do that. Also this is not required for bikes built in 2014 onward as these have a modified cylinder head to solve this problem.
    Cover the throttle bodies to prevent dirt from falling in. I forgot to do it here and in my check coil pack video as I'm focusing on the video making rather than the bike. I will be better in the future :-)

    From a 30 year mechanic my friend, stop using the wrench on your oil filter! If you read the directions on the filter you will find that the correct way is to turn it down too contact and then turn another 1/2 - 3/4 turn BY HAND. There is a reason for this and it’s the seal. Other than that you do a great job servicing your bike and I’m sure you have encouraged many many people who have wanted to DIY but lacked the confidence to do so until they watched you’re video. A small c-clamp works very well to push the piston in on your caliper and if it’s going to be a few minutes before you reinstall it a piece of wood will hold it in the retracted position.

    • @Freedomachine
      @Freedomachine  4 роки тому +1

      Hi, and thanks for the advice. If you look I don't make a full turn. It's just that tool that is very slippery and it looks like I'm tightening like a gorilla. In fairness I should mention not to overtighten it so I take your point.
      In regards to the C-Clamp thanks again for the advice. I have the habit to avoid pulling out every tool that I have but it would certainly make it easier.

    Important: Always, before removing the spark plugs, blow out all dust and debris and any residue from the access to the sparks! Everything in there will fall into the engine otherwise. If you don’t have compressed air use a vacuum cleaner after loosening all dirt with a paint brush...

    • @timogronroos4642
      @timogronroos4642 3 роки тому

      Maybe you can use compressed air from a spray bottle used when working with computers. Also it might be good to change the plugs first and oil in the end? So if some debris will get in, it might go our with the oil change.

    • @BRZDR
      @BRZDR 2 роки тому

      @@timogronroos4642 If debris falls into your pistons, your piston heads and cylinders could get damaged and you will not see if fall into the oil sump. That's why you need to be careful when changing your plugs or checking for top dead centre. Do not stick anything wooden into those holes or you may have pieces of wood left in your cylinders. Be careful with metal not to scratch any surfaces inside your cylinders, etc. Be slow, thorough and methodical and you will be fine :)

    Tony's tip of the day. After oil drains, take bike off stand and lean bike as far as you can left and right. Another cup or so of dirty oil will come out (thanks Jaxon). Buy a cap type filter wrench for $5 to remove the filter. It is small and is in my tool kit always. I have strong hands and never use a wrench to tighten the oil filter. Never had it leak.
    Also remove shifter from pivot and lube it up a bit.

    I'm a little bit mechanically minded but definitely not experienced and what was usually simple 5-10+ years ago, the difficulty and fiddliness has increased exponentially in the modern era for whatever reason so I'll admit there was a bit of trepidation and anxiety in kicking off ... but for me this is the ABSOLUTE 'Go-To' video tutorial when you want to have a crack at servicing your Super Tenere yourself (in my case the 2010 model) ... some very minor points as suggested elsewhere on here, I'd lay a protective cloth over the carbie barrels (which he's acknowledged - I apologise but I don't know the lad's name), I'd blow / vacuum out the top of the barrels to remove any loose dirt, I wouldn't tighten the oil drain plugs that 'hard' and I'd put an old rag over the rear rim to soak up the excess / dripping shaft drive oil ... but aside of those minor, minor issues, this video, will definitely save you mega $$$'s and give you a very, very decent amount of self satisfaction.

    Great video very well done! Someone else made the comment but it’s buried: brake specific grease on the brake caliper slide pins only. I made the mistake of using wheel bearing grease once and it eroded the rubber boots.

      Thanks for watching. I use Lithium grease which is used in cv joints and so on. It is completely fine with rubber parts but might not be as good as dedicated silicone. Unfortunately I only ever use the lithium one but I will follow your advice on my next service.

    I'm so grateful for this video. It gave me the assurance I needed to crack on and get the servicing done myself. I recently changed my oil and air filters, oil and plugs. However I was not expecting such difficulty replacing the air box. I was stuck for about 40 mins trying to get the circlip on the breather pipe to resecure the pipe to the box. Eventually I used a jubilee clip. I wish I knew that I needed circlip pliers before beginning because besides that hiccup the whole thing was a breeze. I used a magentic spark plug remover tool and it made it very easy. Thanks again, and thanks from my bike also.

    Thanks, this is a really clear demonstration on how to service the XT1200. You've given me the confidence to change the spark plugs on mine. This is a job I have been dreading as there seemed to be so many parts to remove and awkward access points, but you have shown that if you use the correct tools and allow sufficient time it seems relatively straightforward.

      Hi, Hope you're well and managing to avoid anything to do with Corona. I have just successfully changed the spark plugs in my XT1200 by following your excellent video. All very straightforward, although re-connecting the airbox to the engine breather pipe was a pain. Thanks again for your help. If you get round to changing the coolant and flushing the radiator on your XT1200 please make a video of how you do it, I'm sure there are plenty of people like me that would be interested to see how its done properly. Best Regards

    My friend, you should never return dirty pistons on the brake calipers. You must clean them up before return them.

    • @Freedomachine
      @Freedomachine  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks. I should have mentioned it in the video but I would say it is not essential if the pistons are in normal condition. As also explained on page 4-45 of the service manual and in my video, you can change the pads without removing the calipers and this would not allow for any cleaning and in fact cleaning the pistons is not mentioned on the service manual. Nevertheless I agree with you that it might be a good Idea to use some brake cleaner to get the dirt away from the seals.

But I also get your point in terms of really helping others if they don't have that experience. I'm clarifying torque for all the bolts on my recent valve clearance video for that exact reason and I intend to do so for all my future videos. In other words you are absolutely right. I should have used a torque wrench.

      Hi and thanks for watching ☺️ Unfortunately I'm not sure if I'm understanding the question. Googe translator is doing a poor job at it. Yamalube is a rebranded oil manufactured by different companies. For instance in Canada i think it is Imperial Oil Co. (Esso) while in the states it is CITGO. This can change over time. Yamaha gives a set of specifications and the lowest bidder gets the right to brand their oil Yamalube. There is really nothing special about it. Many brands can achieve same or better quality. I highly doubt that yamalube is better than Motul, Castrol or Silcolene which are very specialized and have a much larger adoption rate. I change the filter every two oil changes. The spark plugs were bad as my bike suffered from the ignition coils water ingress problem. If you have a gen one I would do the sparks and make sure it is properly sealed.

    The bike should be on the sidestand to empty out the oil.

      Hi Tony thanks for the advice. If you check page 3-25 of the service manual they don't mention the side stand. For many bikes with center stand it does not matter how you drain it unless it is clearly stated in the manual. Also I did drain it both ways but the oil that comes out is the same.

    Hello, do you know if engine has to be removed from the frame to perform valve adjustment?

    • @Freedomachine
      @Freedomachine  4 роки тому +1

      It would be much easier to perform the adjustment but the complication of removing the engine is much worse than performing the work with the engine in place. So in other words no you don't need to remove the engine but it is not going to be fun for you to do the job. Everything is very hard to access

      @@Freedomachine Thanks a lot. As someone who does not want to spend anymore resources for finding good and honest mechanics I do all maintenance myself. It has been evolved now permanently that servicing is part of the fun of having a motorcycle. Not able to do the regular maintenance is serious concern. I was considering this bike as my next but I have doubts now, I realise what difficult access to parts of the engine is, frustration and swearing outside... I watched someone else also who said that engine has to be removed for this task. At least the radiator is not on the way, I am not sure.

      @Freedomachine  4 роки тому

      I don't believe the valve adjustment should be a decision maker. It will take a bit longer and with the right tools and a bit of patience you will get it done. The models from 2014 onwards are extremely reliable and honestly you will save a lot of time because there won't be much to fix. Check what's involved in a GS clutch replacement and you won't worry about the valve adjustment after that.

    Way too much torque on the bolts and the filter. I hope they come back off without stripping it first.

      The belt is slipping because I touched it with oily hands. This is why I pull so hard. Done the change many times since without problems. Other bolts were tightened just fine. Thanks for watching.

      @@Freedomachine my point is. It doesn't need to be that tight. Really only hand tight. They're a real problem of they get too tight, they expand and then you have to cut them off or use a punch in which is completely unnecessary. Just watching out for a fellow YAMAHA rider.

    • @Freedomachine
      @Freedomachine  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah a lot of screws to get there but it is easy. Also I'm taking off the entire box because I need to access the spark plugs. If you change only the filter, taking off the top will be enough.

    • @Freedomachine
      @Freedomachine  3 роки тому

      Silicone is a very solid solution but messy when you have to clean it the next time you service the spark plugs. Some people use grease instead. If you ride in a lot of rain then i would definitely recommend it.
