My dad was born in a mud brick house on the banks of the Tigris river (one of the rivers of Babylon). He has memories playing on the river banks and collecting Locust until his mother died at aged 2 and his father abandoned him and was admitted to an orphanage in Diyarbakir Turkey. He survived much hardship and became a successful engineer and now lives in Australia. Every time he hears this song he cries. He’s 70.
Psalm 137:1-9 KJV By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. [2] We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. [3] For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. [4] How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land? [5] If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. [6] If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy. [7] Remember, O Lord, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof. [8] O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us. [9] Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.

It melts my heart! I could imagine the sad plight of our ancestors, the Jews, while they were sitting by the rivers of Babylon. They felt homesick and they really long for their homeland, Israel or Zion and as they commune with God in prayers and songs within their hearts! I am teary-eyed internalizing the lyrics but the tempo of the melody makes me feel like doing the Hawaiian dance moves with my hands expressing what I feel. So cool! The music production is candidly beautiful. GOD bless the musicians and the vocalists!!!! Yeah, God put them ( the Jews into "slumber" and allowed them to be head-strung even hardened their hearts so that as they scattered around the world, salvation will be available to the gentiles, not only to them who are of Jewish bloodline. But since God is faithful and just, as He promised to Abraham, all of the Jews will be re-united with God, the hosts of angels and fellow God's family through Jesus Christ, when he returns to bring us, believers in heaven with him. My sister’s favourite song! We will be playing it at her upcoming funeral. While it speaks directly of the Exile spoken of in Psalms - it can be related to our lives; when wickedness carries us off to lose health & relationships. My sister suffered with serious mental health issues, and in her last years had much more peace with herself & God. The song has deeply significant meaning for me as her sister. 🙏🏼💞 RIP our beautiful Rebecca!
Heard this song before but didnt know what it meant, until today which is Easter sunday. Im watching a documentary about Jesus's life and the origins of Christianity, and this scripture was read about the Fall Of Babylon. And I remembered these lines. I now filly fully understand its meaning. I listen to this beautiful song everyday now as an inspiration to start my day...
I heard this song as a kid in the late 70’s. I didn’t know until recently in 2021 that it is a story of exile and captivity as described in Psalm 137. It has a fun sound and catchy chorus. It was originally released in 1970 as a reggae song by the Melodians and rerecorded several times, thereafter, by many artists.
Just coming across same finding while listening a teaching on Psalms 137. As french speaking, the chorus of this song prompted in my memory leading me back to the 80s...
As a kid who grew up in the early 2000's, my father who was an early 80's teenager shared this song with me, I am 24 today and i didn't know this song had a Bible reference... Today I am an Orthodox Christian ☦️and this song is going in my music collection
Oh my God brother I'm an Orthodox Christian too, my father was the one who shared this song with me when I was a teenager because he was also an '80s teenager and now that I'm 24 years old I write here because I was reading Psalms and found out that Psalm 137 is where this song is originated from! God bless you my friend ☦️
I just did the same thing. Being Native American I can relate very well. I’m almost 70 now and remember my father talking about things when he was young. I do the same now with my daughter and granddaughter. My heart just broke when I was reading Psalms 137. My mother wouldn’t talk much it, just say… do you best sit down and be quiet. Daddy loved nature, walking in the woods, by the swamps and fishing. He was a quiet man, good to animals and people but nobody messed with his children. I never knew him to fight but peopled listened and nobody I ever knew of put a hand on him unless it was in love. He was a protector.
I grew up in 70's in a communist country and loved Bonny M, we danced under this song a lot, did not understand the words... 45 years forward, and a Believer in Christ, i listened to thsi song again today, watched the background pictures and understood what the dong is really about. Thank you for sharing and God bless you all
I'm 18 but I love this song so much it reminds of my Christmas at my grandma's as a child, she Is gone but I dont mourn because she left me with many happy memories and this song is part of some so I love it

Who is having insomnia and listening while on the quarantine and still loving this song about the power of Jah? Jah will deliver us again and again until we render him exclusive devotion eternally. Worthy is Jah to receive all the glory and praises, for ever and ever . Amen
This is one of Jamaica BEST SONG OF THE 70S and it will be forever. These words are the true living words from the Holy Bible. They played all kinds of the dance hall music in some the churches. But this one that's the words of the Bible I don't remember hearing it in any of the churches. This song is a song of praise to the Lord forever.
When I was a teenager I only paid attention to the melody, when I had a better understanding of English and heard it coudn't stop crying thinking about the context of when it was written. Now I just started a study of the book of Lamentations, this song is so intense that I feel will help me to understand in a new level and connect the Scripture to today's reality in USA and what is my role for a solid change to happen. :'(
Oh GOD of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob... Remember YOUR covenant that YOU never leave them nor forsake Israel... Hear the cries of their heart ❤️ that seeks YOU... please 🙏 look at them again, and save them from the Hamas who are persecuting them...
@@writemysoul No one is more obsessed with God than atheists. Ask yourself who you are angry with that you have the need to question the faith of others, just because you don't have the grace to feel it. I tell you that in this world we're alone and we have free will because God greatly respects what happens to you when you don't want it. The people of Israel crucified God himself through Jesus Christ, so as long as they continue in this situation of rejecting God, they won't be able to enjoy his presence. Like you. By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion. We thank God for bringing us into 2021 and taking care of us in 2020 which was the pandemic. We pray that this year will be a new beginning and we will be free from this virus.
This song is inspired in psalm 137, when Israel was taken in captivity by king Nebuchadnezzar. to Babylon, year 586 B.C. Beautiful psalm. Love when it says "but how can we sing the songs of the Lord while in a pagan land?
Steven Sotloff Open your heart despite the bad examples of the lighter pigment my brother, for it is written "One more commandment I give you: Love one another, as I have loved you."
veronica cuello remember there are different bibles. The "GOOD NEWS" bible says........in a foreign land and the "KING JAMES" version says..............in a strange land.
Always been so blessed by this song even though it was before my time. There’s this beautiful mix of nostalgia, joy and longing in it that I think speaks to the heart of praise and worship. “Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.” (John 16:20)
I heard this beautiful song for the first time when it was played on POP. I was so fascinated to this tune and rhythm. Later I came to know that this is nothing but of Psalm 137 about the plight of the Israelites, our ancestors, who were carried away as Captives due to their disobedience to God. Yes, this should be our prayers also that "the words of our mouth and the meditation of our heart be acceptable to Him"
"Boney M" was super popular in the old USSR where I grew up. I remember listening to this song long before I spoke a word of English and long before I knew the Lord. A couple of years ago I came across this song again. This time it brought me to tears when I understood where the lyrics came from. The Lord has always been there, even when I was His enemy. His love transcends time and space. It brings sinners back to life. If He changed me, He can change anyone.
I'm an atheist who grew in a very Christian home, I don't believe in the existence of God, but I still find confort in various religious songs, it takes me back to that old time, where I felt safe, loved and inspire for the future. I will always respect and be grateful for the Christian way I was raised, it made me a good man. I hope for those who believe that God bless your lives, and for those in a similar situation as me that love fill your path!!
Still fellow I hope you are doing well , will pray that God bless you ,protect you and eventually you find your way and realise Jesus Christ is real and that he is God himself☦️☦️☦️
This song leaves me in tears. My dad played it to my sister and I. He is still alive but it still leaves me in tears. He sang it more calmly though and it didn’t sound as cheerful.
Have loved this song for more than 30 years and will continue loving it. Can’t imagine the pain that a whole nation were taken in captivity! This inspires me to worship the Lord in happy and in sorrow, at everywhere and anywhere. Glory be to the Lord!
Our parish priest mentioned about this song in his homily today! Such a meaningful Beautiful song! God bless the whole world and protect it from all danger! Glory to God in the highest and peace to all the people on earth! 😇🌹🌹🌹
I feel fortunate for having sung this song with my cousin last week, in celebration with family. It is a moment that I won’t soon forget which has inspired me to keep learning music and, most importantly, to keep the faith and love our God.
This song is based on a psalm. What is amazing is that eventually a Jewish woman became the Queen and her son became the king who declared that Jews could return to Jerusalem. They rebuilt the Temple. Once again they played instruments during prayers.

my grandma loves this song so much, i would always hear this song playing EVERY morning when i woke up for school when i was younger. i can't believe she put up with me as i was always a grumpy person during the morning, she would even bring a huge bowl of water to wash my hair from bed if i refused to shower the night before... i love her a lot, she's still around and i'm very grateful for that. edit: i suddenly started humming the lyrics to this song so i just HAD to find it lol..

This song has alot of meaning and carries much pain for the black African diaspora who was dispersed, the remnants so to speak. We know who we are, where we are from and how we get to where we were scattered. The BIBLE is TRUTH. This song would have open more eyes to the "African Slave Trade" if the pictures displayed was from slavery. We cannot be fooled anymore, WE KNOW WHO WE ARE, and i am happy that our father has been waking more and more of us up to the TRUTH.
When I was a little kid in Nigeria in the late 90s my parents used to play this song all the time and I would hear it every Sunday on the radio😌😌 It was only when I got older that I realized it was from the book of Psalms and based on actual history of the Jews and their enslavement by the Babylonians.

When I was growing up my elders were partying to this song. Cut to 2004 and my salvation and now singing this song with Holy Spirit understanding that it’s actually a psalm of lament by the exiled ppl of Judah singing in Babylon. This song is for us believers today as we live in spiritual Babylon awaiting our exodus to the NEW JERUSALEM by our “better than Moses” the Messiah, Son of God, Son of David, descendant of Zerubbabel the King 👑 of kings and Lord of lords YESHUA. Any day now our Redemption draws near. Even so come Lord Jesus 🙏🏼❤️♥️💕💖💝✨✨✨✨

It’s far from a happy song, it’s when the Jews were kept in captivity by the Babylonians, Jehovah God’s servants, the Jews at the time, we’re mocked and ridiculed. It is a song written about this and the lyrics were taken from the Bible in Psalm 137 and 19. I’m studying from a book called ‘Imitate Their Faith,’ online at JW.ORG and it made me think of this song, that’s why I’m here.
"Rivers of Babylon" is a Rastafari song written and recorded by Brent Dowe and Trevor McNaughton of the Jamaican reggae group The Melodians in 1970….. The Melodians' original version of the song appeared on the soundtrack album for the 1972 movie The Harder They Come, which made it internationally known. The song was re-popularized in Europe by the 1978 Boney M.

Oh Yah 😢😢😢remember us the children of Jacob(ያእቆብ ኣሜን)::
Heard this song before but didnt know what it meant, until today which is Easter sunday. Im watching a documentary about Jesus's life and the origins of Christianity, and this scripture was read about the Fall Of Babylon. And I remembered these lines. I now filly fully understand its meaning. I listen to this beautiful song everyday now as an inspiration to start my day...
If you read the Psalm your heart will break
Psalm 137
I heard this song as a kid in the late 70’s. I didn’t know until recently in 2021 that it is a story of exile and captivity as described in Psalm 137. It has a fun sound and catchy chorus. It was originally released in 1970 as a reggae song by the Melodians and rerecorded several times, thereafter, by many artists.
Interesting information.
Beautiful ❤️
Just coming across same finding while listening a teaching on Psalms 137. As french speaking, the chorus of this song prompted in my memory leading me back to the 80s...
I also in 2021 realised it after reading Psalms.
thanks for the information , i have never known about its origin
As a kid who grew up in the early 2000's, my father who was an early 80's teenager shared this song with me, I am 24 today and i didn't know this song had a Bible reference... Today I am an Orthodox Christian ☦️and this song is going in my music collection
I hope you start studying the Bible
Oh my God brother I'm an Orthodox Christian too, my father was the one who shared this song with me when I was a teenager because he was also an '80s teenager and now that I'm 24 years old I write here because I was reading Psalms and found out that Psalm 137 is where this song is originated from!
God bless you my friend ☦️
Psalm 137. I was just telling my little nephew about the book of psalms and this song came to my mind.
My 10 year great nephew plays the song on his guitar and sings this song very well. I’m so proud of him.
God bless you... Jesus loves you...
Thank you for sharing and God bless you all
Similar story. Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life. Keep the faith my brother. Keep the faith!
Me too! In Mexico was cery popular, they would play it at parties but we didn't know what it was about. Until now.
I'm 18 but I love this song so much it reminds of my Christmas at my grandma's as a child, she Is gone but I dont mourn because she left me with many happy memories and this song is part of some so I love it
song reminds me of the Pre school i went..They played this every day
This song is a cry of Israelites when they were captured and were being forced to sing the Lord's song. They had fears of grief
well they all had their own gods til the book conglomerated them into one dude..and edited to the point it is. hard to know what is real and not.. but this bit i loe the meditation of our hearts... xxx
My father would carry me in his back and would sing this song for me every night..I miss you papa😭❤️
This comment reminds me of my uncle💔😢

That's happening to me right now
Actually a very nice song.

Like you. Then there're those of us who follow God with our soul and see true miracles in our lives. Oh... if you only knew how wonderful it's to be loved by God, but hey, you only experience that when you choose it. Sorry! =)
@@pollywood4580 Did you know there is no real god...nothing to do with atheists or anything else. here just is no real god. You are just listening to the song to relax

This song is based on a psalm. What is amazing is that eventually a Jewish woman became the Queen and her son became the king who declared that Jews could return to Jerusalem. They rebuilt the Temple. Once again they played instruments during prayers.

This song has alot of meaning and carries much pain for the black African diaspora who was dispersed, the remnants so to speak.
