- Joey Santore and Al Scorch spotted the turtle on the Chicago River... they host an educational comedy channel on UA-cam and podcast, called Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't, focusing on public education around ecology and botany.

Joey Santore at Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't is one of my absolute favs. Can't beat adding comedy to nature education. Thank you from a railroad laborer's daughter and fellow naturalist for your service educating the public and making me laugh. Sometimes self-taught passion is worth 2 degrees.
Hey don’t sell Al short either!
I like watching his channel too 🤠
I read that in his voice
It blows my mind how the dude in that video can list the most complicated botany names in his reels.... stuff I can't even pronounce 🤣
But are gems.
If you’re not subscribed to Crime Pays But Botany Doesn’t, you’re missing out on peak educational content from the most Chicagoan to ever Chicago.
Huge agree! I'm a grandma who used to work in horticulture. I learn something every video.
He made me get into native plants!
He sounds like a farmer that also racketeered alcohol in the 20s lol
@euthmialy, I like the demonym, "CHEEK-UH-GO-IN", but that's the first time I've heard or saw Chicago used as a verb. Am I missing out on something? I want to do the Chicago with everyone else!
He's amusing but he lost me when he went into a natural health store and chose to mock the remedies of snake oil. As much as he understands botany he doesn't understand homeopathy 🤷 I can't subscribe to somebody that close minded
I would like to congratulate Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't for getting a TV network to basically run an add segment promoting their channel, I especially liked the end where it had your logo and advertised "Kill your lawn Tuesdays."
This turtle has done so much for our small business, we should elect it Mayor!
@@overbythere I know you're joking but there have been about 9 or 10 dogs elected mayor in various parts of our country.
@@overbythere Chonky would prob do a better job than any rep or dem. She seems really laid back.
Joey is spot on about getting into ecology to pull yourself out of the depressing reality that is this industrial society. Anybody can teach themselves about this stuff.
I love his attitude on life. his video on ditch weed in chicago got me hooked!!
Chonkosaurus must be protected at all costs. Especially from social media selfie idiots. Fame is a double edged sword.
Hopefully, she finds a private place to lay her eggs.
My sentiment exactly, some *sshole will now attempt to hurt this beautiful snapper just because they now know it's there smfh
Chonky looks delicious 😋🤤
@@ryanwaldrop2473 Stop lashing out at the world because your other nut hasn't dropped
What a treat to have these boys on the news.
It was a pleasure and an honor
Professors of science and anthropology nice.
JOEY FOR MAYOR!!!!
Many turtles are not like the alligator snapping turtle
Joey Santore is a Chicago treasure.
Never heard a more Chicago accent than Al Scorch. I was waiting for him to whip out a brat and beer LOL.
Strangely enough that’s what I had for breakfast!
You should give these two a regular segment!
I concur, we are open to offers
That’s a fantastic idea!!
They wouldn’t want it, if you know anything about the channel
@@missyflutter5562 that’s truly a shame. This was probably thier most widely viewed segment ever.
@@missyflutter5562 so you've never heard Joey speak at horticultural symposiums I presume. Ignore the language, it won't cause permanent damage.
As a chicago native I've been watching Joey since he had less than a hundred views per video. He's a blessing to this god forsaken city and god's (almost) green earth and I hope nothing but good for him...
I tried Al's liquid salad and I swear to christ you can shine a light down my throat and illuminate the print of my underpants.
😂 Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't made the news!
Again!
Yay! This made my morning. So glad you featured them! It's great to see when ecological awareness efforts are leading to more biodiversity in our essential waterways.
Thank you so much for having them on and for giving them time to explain why what they do is so important! Their UA-cam channel is fantastic!
Joey, Al: you crushed it; grats on the spot! Earthlings and civilians: find Crime Pays and Botany Doesn’t on UA-cam, learn a little something.
My absolute favorite channel. Do yourselves a favor and binge botany videos. You can thank me later.
And we get a cameo from jack and lewy. I love that he brings them everywhere he goes.
His podcast is the best Botany channel there is.
I can only hope this gives more of a spotlight to Joey
He deserves it, doesn't he?
I woke up with anxiety and after watching this I feel much better. Thank you guys.
Yes! It works every time!
You’d love his channel. Every video is like it
@@FrugalGarden already do
Same!
So glad these guys got featured! One of my favorite channels, hilarious and very educational. If you havent, definitely check them out
Thanks for the love! -Al
Nice. I didn’t even expect them to be in studio when I clicked. Joey nice Al nice.
Crime pays but Botany doesn’t is the channel!
Absolute Chicago legends. Thanks for having them on!!
In the 5ish years of watching Joey he taught me more than any of my old science teachers lol
I got a sneaking suspicion this is the same Chonk we saw when I was teaching a group of college students, we joined the Friends of the Chicago River canoe tour in April of 2016 - he was big then, and is thicker now, and they live for decades. Wouldn't be surprised. APEX CHONK
Yes!!! Psyched you got exposure for your excellent channel, and hopefully opening more eyes to biodiversity and appreciation of wildlife! Thanks Chonkosaurus!
You ever heard of liquid salad? We do that! Al does that!
Hey everyone welcome back to crime pays but botany doesn’t. Today we’re lookin at this big fucking banger of a snapping turtle absolutle beaut. This fucking snapping turtle is a panty dropper and would look great in any landscape.
Lol These two look like they just walked out of a SNL skit❗😄
They're a Hoot‼️🐢
This is actually them, they're legit.
Seeing Joey and Al pop up outside of the Crime Pays channel is always pure joy!
I love how this is how he got on the news, not for anything relating to plants, just him and a friend hyping up a snapping turtle.
Been subscribed to Joey on UA-cam for years. Good dude, ddmidnt expect to see him here lol
Yooo that's our boys Joey and Al let's all give em' a big "NICE"!
NICE!
They are what made Chicago. real nice. 👍🏽🐢🌱📈 thanks for having Joey and Al ♥️✌🏽 from Houston TX.
Finally get to see the man behind the camera.
Al Scorch is looks exactly like what I expect a Chicagoan to look like
I was grinning to my ears seeing the footage with that sweet commentary in the background, but I really lost it when I saw the guys in the studio. Great piece of TV right here, smart move.
A truly magnificent local tv spot - so well done. You both were supremely eloquent,
educational, and funny all at the same time. And the hosts were a step above the
usual talking heads - BRAVO !!!
Many of Mitch McConnell's relatives live in the area.
McConnell is probably going to order a print of Chonkasaurus to put over his bed.
Great to see you guys on the News. Your UA-cam channel is a fave!
So happy to see Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't on the news! One of the best UA-cam channels there is!
Big fan of WGN and Tony, so I love to see them together at last! Thanks to all involved. ❤ Extra points for letting Jack and Louie tag along.
It’s a match made in heaven, we had a good time going up there
One of the best channels on youtube, the mix of humor, dread and information is simply incredible.
So, im a longtime fan of Joey, but I gotta give massive props to Al for wearing a goddamn Dominicks sweater on WGN morning news. The deeper you look the more layers of absolute Chicago you can see that both of them embody lmao
CPBBD is one of the greatest UA-cam channels out there. Highly recommend it to everyone.
These two just make my heart sing! The spotlight that they shine on the beauty and diversity on our planet is as valuable as ever in today's world. Love you guys, and thank you WGN for having them on!
Love Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't, I've been watching for years. The humour and knowledge is great!
The guy talking, is the perfect voice of the Chicago dialect !!!
The UA-cam channel is full of cool videos of rare ecological environments from around the world ❤
The fact that Joe and Al showed up in character
Yeah!! Glad to see you guys are making on television in more than one way.
I'm wearing my Crime Pays but Mycology Dosen't shirt right now go viral Joey
I think these two guys hosting a show would make me subscribe to this UA-cam channel for a local tv news channel where I do not live, and that's a beautiful thing
These gents are eloquent and hilarious!
At first I thought it was a Gator turtle, that's actually a pre historic creature.. This snapping turtle is huge!
Great to see nature content on WGN! More of this please.
Joey, Al, you brightened my day. I was losing my faith in humanity. I still am, but at least now I’m smiling. Thanks!
Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't is the best channel on UA-cam and this is the best interview to ever air.
Very cool. Even before Chonkasaurus blew up to be world famous in Chicago, I was wondering if there was going to be a tee shirt with her amphibious Highness. My "Department of Unauthorized Forestry" tee is getting pretty shabby, time for a "River Habitat Crisis Commission" shirt or somethin'. Get on dat, will ya'?
LoL! RHCC! Perfect
Fun, yes, but "she's" a male, discernable by the rather small carapace and the length of the cloaca pouch.
Second time I heard about liquid salad from that guy lol
How many outdoor/garden apartment friends do you have? 😄🤘
Love Crime Pays But Botany Doesn’t. A real gem of a channel that I just happened to stumble across and subscribed to immediately.
These 2 dude are straight up legit! Mad props! I love it.
When you're a giant snapping turtle , having a shell for protection is a mere formality at best.
FWIW, it's believed that the reason for Snapping turtles being so defensive is because they are unable to pull their legs and head fully into their shells.
They are well aware of that, so they compensate by protecting themselves with that famous mouth and claws.
These men need their own show!!! Way Kool!!! Thank you for sharing this with us all. Blessings.
Crime Pays but botany doesn't is the most entertaining Channel I have on my subscription list!
Perfection. Glad you had the boys on, and I hope you invite them back for updates. Love the old school Chicago spirit, and the dogs!
Nice segment, i was looking forward to his typical outro though. 😂
Love crime pays!
Thanks for showing me that some still care about this ole ball of dirt! 💚😁
Joey and Al are the best at showing folks the beauty in plants.
I love the very last line... "They're a puzzle." 😄
You didn't end this one like you usually do, but i think you got some points across.
Thanks Joey.
Man this is cool
I just want to hear that big Burly guy on the far right say " da bears"😂😂😂 I love Joes Channel I watch it both on UA-cam and Facebook been following him for a couple of years now. He has probably some of the best commentary ever on any nature Channel I've ever watched
I love his Social Media. He's awesome! This is the first time I've ever seen his face on camera.
It is a fun show, it’s really really good for when you’re sad
Except the episodes on habitat destruction for the border wall. They’re trying so hard to save everything they can, but there’s just not the time or manpower.
@@evilsharkey8954 yeah it sucks. gotta have hope
What’s crazy is we think that’s a big one ….. when I was a kid my grandfather told me stories of catching and eating them when he was younger and he said they caught snappers 3-5 foot around, that was probably about 100 years ago now! The waters used to be cleaner the turtles lived longer and ate better!
Incredible people
This came up on my feed because I listen to all his videos love this love him he's hilarious.. he's a star for sure!
The turtle was cool too!
Lol Al Scorch is the perfect example of a red blooded American Chicagoan .
That accent will never leave.
God bless chicager
Been watching Joey's channel for a few years now. I always learn something new and I love his colorful way of speaking 😂 10/10 highly recommend!
When I was like 12, a friend and I were walking down a creek behind our houses and about a mile down we needed to cross. We started stepping on big stones to cross and my friend slipped on a big mossy rock and fell in, he got up and told me to not step on that rock and when he pointed at it it moved a little bit. We realized what it was and immediately ran home and grabbed a rope and a giant storage tote ran back and wrangled it somewhat into the tote and dragged the tote to the bank and set the turtle on the bank to take pictures of it and then put it back where we found it. Being grown I now realize that we were wrong to mess with it at all but I have developed photos of it somewhere. Was roughly the size of like a pushmower, just a giant snapper.
This happened in Elkhart Iowa for anyone curious
@@arbyscurlyfries9490 I heard a story first hand about a very large snapper that would emerge from a pond near Tecumseh, Ne and take hot dogs from folks picnicking near the pond. I've handled snappers for years, some were very cooperative with a few aspects of being treated by a human. They are a surprisingly adept creature and are sensitive, can become quite docile.
That dude or dudet’ could be closing in on 100 yrs old… accent and amazing..
Love that guy 🤣 does some awesome work
I read the article on Block Club and had to see if there was video. It's even better now knowing the guy who found it was Joey Santore with Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't! Dude is a legend!
I really enjoy this news article and both guest speakers! I would have liked to take a class in this field. Thank you for the information; it was really entertaining.
Man went up to Chicago for the weekend and now I’m wishing I never left. Forgot how great it is up there compared to south Florida
That shell is hanging on for dear life!😂
I've never been to Chicago but after watching this video I feel like I have.
Legend has it, if a snapping turtle bites you, it won’t let go until it thunders….
As a turtle he must be in Chicago for its legendary pizza
Probably your best bit ever!! Great story.
Lol they are Chicago caricatures! Love Joey!
What a delightful segment
Crime pays . . . the first I heard Joey I thought he was an ex-con gone straight! 😂😂😂😂
Damn! They need Al to bring a banjo! Tony, as always, kills it. And Lou I assume stands for Louise, she's a real sweetie!
Joey is one of my favorite things to ever happen to botany
This was so great to see!! These guys are great, all their videos are amazing!
It is hilarious that I recognized his voice before you said his name!
Shame it takes a big turtle to get you guys on TV - you'd think a weekly segment on local botany would be better than the usual 24 hr news cycle garbage. Good job making it into public broadcast again, though! Gotta keep finding weird shit to get everyone's attention, then educate them real quick before they notice (nice)
Joey Santore is a gem
i love this guy, and the co-worker looks like an SNL bear's fan from back in the day lol
Is funny and away to learn Botany...i like to see very much the videos "Crime Pays and Botany Doesn't"...and now i am the person who is taken photos of must the plants i see in the country i live😊
My guys!!! So nice to see you getting some love from the home town
