Just when you think you’ve seen it all, the wonderful world of animals comes and shocks you once again! Meet “Unit”, a massive, extremely overweight snapping turtle that was surrendered to the Pop Corn Park Animal Refuge. Unit was fed a diet exclusively of Friskie’s cat food and well, that’s definitely a very unhealthy way to feed any turtle. Sure, common snapping turtles are supposed to be big and they are in fact one of the largest freshwater turtles in the USA, but they typically are supposed to weigh between 10 and 35 pounds…guess how much Unit weighs? Find out in this video and see how we accept him into the family here at Garden State Tortoise.

However you made it here, thank you and welcome to Garden State Tortoise. Garden State Tortoise is home to hundreds of animals from all around the world. We are a family dedicated to adventure, conservation of wildlife, and all things nature. We are a reptile rescue and breeding facility for more than ten years, offering refuge to those who need it, and working everyday to protect the beautiful world of reptiles in any way we can. Here on our UA-cam channel you will be able to join us on our animal adventures while learning how to care for, protect, properly identify, feed and even breed many species of turtle, tortoise, snake and lizard. We even work with frogs and salamanders! We hope you enjoy our videos and help us share them with the world so we can continue to educate people of all ages about herpetology.

I believe there is a bigger but healthy snapper at the Zoo in Duluth, MN. I've never seen one bigger than it and from your video I believe it may easily dwarf this one but isn't overweight. I'm not sure on weight but on size appears bigger.

I don't understand how someone who owns this creature would not notice the "love" handles and know there is a problem? I've had to rehab dogs like are massive as well. What starts out as expression of "love" can kill these animals! Don't feed incorrectly folks!😇❤️🐢🐢

That poor turtle. I know as humans we think treating our animals like our babies is sweet and loving, and for some it may be ok but for most it isn’t. It hurts them. Animals are NOT humans! 13 years ago in Ihlen MN at the Split Rock Creek lake just before the spillway I seen a Snapper 3 times that size(easy) on the rocks. I got down as quickly as could while yelling for my grandfather Lewis to help. So, it turned around by the time I got close grabbed its tail. Held on tight and it started to pull me in as it went down, then! It started to turn sideways to try and snap at me and the head was the size of a football. I let go and watched it swim away. Gramps never heard me yelling so he never saw it. I hope it still lives.

Me and my buddy almost stepped on a chelydra serpetina when we were in 6th grade. Its shell was at least 15 inches across. Scared me to death. We thought it was a rock as we were wading in the water. Till he moved, and we took off running. Lol
Broke my heart years later when I found out they filled the quarry he lived in to build a housing development in Jerome Ohio.

I’ve gotta giant turtle story to add! In Massasoit state park, in frigid Massachusetts, of all places. There’s a huge snapper living there i once saw, it’s shell was close to as big as this guys, but from what I could see, it was not overweight. It just looked like a majestic dinosaur to me, I had no idea we got turtles that big in the northeast. It looked like an alligator snapping turtle, it was *that* large. The shell was close to 2 feet across, if I can find the video I took, I’ll try and share it here.

Oh wow, this is the first time I've seen this sanctuary and it has such a positive, respectful energy. That's amazing.
For the burned tortoise, he mentioned that there was three others? Did somebody else get custody of those? I just hope the owner who allowed that injury to happen wasn't allowed to keep any of those poor guys.
Additional question: for Unit, where he was fed inappropriately for so long, is there any concern about vitamin deficiencies? Especially with how he's going to have to have a very restricted diet going forward, lol.
