Shapeshifter's a beast and I love it. The best advice I ever saw for it was to create an INIT patch in the first slot, where both oscillators are sines and there's no modulation or weird modes enabled. I find the menus pretty friendly -- the encoder is only for setting values so it's not this back-and-forth menu diving thing. But there are a lot of options that snarl the sound into an impossible 12 dimensional vortex, so it's good to have a safe point to come back to easily.
Thank you for a great demo of this beast ! Yours is one of my favourite channels on using modular stuff. Still hesitating between Shapeshifter and Odessa for my second sound source (Morphagene is a first as past of Make Noise T&MMM - btw, love your videos featuring MakeNoise modules). I know Odessa and Shapeshifter are 2 absolutely different VCOs, but I somehow lean toward them in terms of complexity of sound they can produce
Nice video! I really love the Shapeshifter and all the crazy sounds that can come out of it. I think I spotted a mistake at 1:24min: each wavebank contains 8 wavetables (the manual shows them page 32 and on). Or are you referring to something else?
No, you're totally right. Setting the 'multi' has four values 1, 2, 4 and 8, so this feels like being able to select four and with the basic waveforms I assumed sine, square, triangle and saw (also four) so this is where the mistake came from. There are eight, but it feels like four :).
Can't say that it's my "favorite" complex VCO. My gripe is not being able to untie the 2nd oscillator from the 1st (it always follows the pitch). I've had a love/hate relationship with it. But for the CRAZY ASS noise factor alone, I've never gotten rid of it. I've had it for a couple of years, it's one of the 1st modules I've bought (baptism by fire!)... But taming the thing is not easy. There is a band called
One of the very few good demos of this module which is kinda weird considering it's out for quite a while. Was convnced to get Hertz Donut next but after checking Shapeshifter manual i've been blown away with possibilities it offers. Looks like it's another wavetable VCO for me. Great sounds btw, I'm hoping it can do some heavier and noisier stuff just as well.
Thanks! Well, I think you'll have a hard time NOT to get heavier and noisier stuff :). Complex oscillators are hard to control, but if you're looking for total sonic madness, shapeshifter can be pure evil.
I did a bad job showing you what I used! Melodic sequencing comes from Qu-Bit Bloom and effects come from Imitor Versio (delay) and Desmodus Versio (verb). There was a big Mutable Instruments case below with Tides and Stages for modulation (basically just LFO's, nothing special). The Imitor delay is timed by Bloom.
It's been so long since someone has done a deeper exploration of Shapeshifter like this. I love this thing! I noticed you have an Arbhar not too far from it. Ever wondered what'd happen if you recorded a complex sound from Shapeshifter into it or a Morphagene? I have... ;)
This sounds epic, impressive stuff. I’m trying not to fall down the eurorack rabbit hole, cos I’m saving for a Waldorf iridium but I really see \ hear the appeal and if my pockets where deep enough I’d get a buchla. Figure I’m going to be saving money by getting the Waldorf instead 😂 crazy how we justify things with ridiculous stories huh?
I don't want to make it difficult for you, but the TTA/Buchla modules are so affordable I dare to call them cheap. And it carries the official Buchla looks, colors and logo too. More important, they are truly excellent, I always call it the candy shop. Even better, they have a few legends in the pipeline. Trust me on this. New video on the way....

Totally agree! My initial setting is also preset 0 with the two sines and nothing enabled.
You are so amazing the style of your patches is 100% my taste...
Wow, thanks for sharing!
Amazing demo

Shapeshifter my favorite module.
Definitely my favorite complex oscillator!
Reuploaded due to bad sound quality (limiter was a bit too hard).
off topic but what is the reverb you use in these vids?
In this video I used the Tasty Chips ECR-1 Convolution Reverb, it's discontinued and replaced by the ECR+.

@@CinematicLaboratory The basic 1 table actually only has 4 waves, they're doubled up to make it easier to pick the pure versions.

whourkr is the band... I guess Igor started it. Uses Shapeshifter almost exclusively on their 2nd album. Pure noise and pure genius!

Can say a little something about the other modules you are using here? Reverb, Delay, Sequencing, any modulations?

Thanks for sharing. Indeed, it's time to harvest a ShapeShifter. Coming soon!
@@CinematicLaboratory Looking forward to it!

Don't neglect its potential as a modulation source! You can make some pretty absurd LFOs and envelope-esque one shot modulations.
Thanks for the tip! Indeed it's a dual LFO too, but with amazing shapes.
