I'm probably in the minority of people who played Rogue before Black Flag. Absolutely fell in love with it and completed it 100% - I even asked, "Why bother with Black Flag?" When I got BF for free in the run-up to Origins, I ate my previous words. Its a testimont to how good black flag is when Edward sits down and sees his dead friends drinking and you feel his emotion. Shay feels too detached in comparison.
I agree 100% Also, when it comes to little environmental details and and the way Edward reacts to the geometry of landscape is definitely superior. For example, you know how when you go up to the corner of a wall in AC games, and you walk towards it so the character leans on it on and tilts his head to look around the corner? Well, on BF and Unity the characters react to whatever is beneath their feet dynamically. So if there's a rock or curb underneath he shifts his body weight accordingly.

I definitely prefer Black Flag as a whole. Both games are good in their own right, but I feel I got a lot more out of Black Flag. Rogue is a staggeringly short game, even for a game you expect to be short. Interestingly, Blak Flag is the last numbered Assassin's Creed game. After 4, they just stopped for some reason.
Assassin's Creed Rogue accomplished a lot by using pre-existing Assassin's Creed assets. Assassin's Creed : Liberation is another example but nobody talks about that as they executed it horribly.. It is slightly unfair to compare it to Black Flag, a fully fledged game with arguably many more new assets than Assassin's Creed III, although the gameplay of Assassin's Creed felt the same until Assassin's Creed Unity. I can give you a small last of some things Rogue took. -Naval combat system from Black Flag -The entire Davenport Homestead map (with some modifications) -The eagle compass from AC Multiplayer and the whispering noises from Multiplayer as well, I believe. -AnvilNext Engine from Black Flag, I believe. -Naval Fleet missions from Black Flag -British uniforms from Black Flag (slightly redone though) -Legendary ships (but some come with fleets now) -Man-o-war models, from Black flag (some man-o-war and legendary ship models were redone and used for Rogue) But Rogue fixed the small things we hated. -Introduced a faster and sleeker ship that felt arguably stronger than the Jackdaw. -A chance to see how the Homestead looked before the events of AC III (not much different) -Naval Fleet missions which you do not need wi-fi for (pirate gamers, arise!) -There was a glitch in Black Flag where you could dock the Jackdaw just before entering the legendary ship stage. You could then jump onto the ship, kill all the crew aboard, and destroy it with one shot. It was patched in Rogue. -Tailing missions were drastically reduced -Gave you the charge ability in the beginning of the game. and some other changes.

Another great Vs. I do say Black Flag for the story and journey we follow with Edward, although Rogue is also great for exploring the other side too. I do enjoy the soundtracks to these games as well. Great video mentor
Black Flag’s theme of change is reflected not only in Edward’s development, but in the world he inhabits. The dream of piracy is becoming less and less of a reality as the British take more control, to the point that when Jenny at the end asks if they’ll see pirates Edward sadly says they’re all gone. He had to leave it behind so he could progress as a person and in his position.
It is worth looking around the Abstergo Entertainment building for memos and QR code sticky notes, getting files and information to flesh out the modern day setting and from the perspective of Abstergo to boot. Black Flag has a excerpt of the novelisation as one of these firewall minigame rewards. One memo in Rogue points out they’ve reused the Animus interface from the Edward Kenway project, and another mentions Arno from Unity. If you’ve read the books or played later games a lot more of these emails make sense.
Rogue is definitely more refined, and I love sailing around the Atlantic. But the fantasy of being a Pirate in the Caribbean is just better in my opinion

AC Rogue feels like Star Wars in many ways… you have a corrupted order from which a Rogue but powerful agent rises to join the opposite side while still questioning his morality. In the end, Shay’s goal was just to be a good man, just like Edward. I also love the relationship between Shay and Haytham but I wished it was more developed
YESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! , Both of my favorite AC games I have played. I love both of these Games. I have been waiting for a video like this THANK YOU MasterAssassin. Can you also link your Discord in the description in your next video. PLSSSSS
I do love both games, but I rly believe the timing of Rogue matters a lot. It is basically more of the same with tweaks and enhancements. If Rogue came first, it would probably be liked a little more, while Black Flag does have a more interesting setting
Even though I prefer Black Flag over Rogue because of the open world and settings both games are still magnificent and they’re one of my favorite games from the whole series. The gameplay is really enjoyable in both games and naval combat is splendidly designed.
I'm really glad that the deciding factors for the plot were the length of Rogue and Achilles' character because I hear valid reasons for why both plots should get the point there. Edward's journey is a dream really (at least for me) as a young guy, being the captain of a crew, going around partying and not having a care in the world in your forties like life finally smiling on him after working hard his whole life, it's really relatable to a guys goals in life as an underdog so you want him to rise up the ladder. And Shay's story is a great addition to the whole Templar-Assassin conflict, the theme that neither side is all good or bad, which is great for the fans out there looking for something more related to the series' premise as a whole even having a direct impact on the other games III and Unity. It's a tie, but yeah, the short story brought Rogue down just a bit.
Controversial opinion, I actually like Rogue's open world more. It loses some points for basically ripping a city from AC3 to an extent, though New York is still a cool location, but I actually enjoyed the river valley and North Atlantic for their variety. The icy waters could be quite stunning, and I love the close quarters of the river valley, and all the little villages and settlements were fun to explore. I don't dislike Black Flag's open world at all, but after a while it can seem very "one tone". Havana feels more developed than Kingston, sure, but beyond that one location feels much the same as the next. Rogue wins out for me purely on variety.
It's really hard to pick due to the obvious similarities, and this might be my opinion but I would say Rogue just because the theme is underused with the Seven Years War, and I kinda like Shay's Templar outfit
The only thing that motivated me to play rogue is to unlock all the outfits.... I really like the templar armor from black flag... And rogue has more variations of it
As much as I want to say Black Flag is a better game, I had so much more fun playing as Shay, being a templar felt so similar but so different, it felt so unique and almost refreshing. Rogue to me feels like a polished Black Flag just shortened and with a very unique story. Not to mention that connection to at the end of the game with Arno was just so cool to me.
I had the same experience. I love Rogue, it's just more interesting to me because I liked the North American setting MUCH more than the Caribbean. It was refreshing to play as a Templar. I remember when AC III came out I wanted a game with Haytham as a protagonist so bad.
It is a polished Black Flag, and the fact it has less content makes it even better, Black Flag is a short good game with A LOT of bad side quests to make, Rogue also has these but they are less and quicker
I would give it to Rogue if it had been longer. Shay remains one of my favorite main protagonists in the entire series, definitely better than Edward, Connor, and Arno. A major difference though is that Black Flag has a lot more and generally better side characters.
I think Unity vs Revelations would be great for next one. Both lineage Assassins, both important love interests, both do something new and different with parkour, big contrasts still create an interesting discussion.
@@peculiar3529 I personally thought it was pretty fun but I have heard and understand that complaint. What I mostly enjoyed it for was it’s ability to help you stay in free run getting passed guards when they tried to block you with its kind of roll over them evasion kind of thing it was used for in game of tripping people with it and the throwing guards also for like a combat standpoint I think it added a bit of fun features as well.
Disagree with World Design. The towns seem very barren and most of the towns look the same. More weather, Snow and Ice was a great touch. I understand there are limits in the tropics but still. Rouge had more dense towns plus the Lisbon level alone made Rogue more impressive.
I think of rogue as the same thing that halo 3 ODST was to halo 3: a smaller, dlc sized game using the same assets and sharing similar gameplay to their predecessor, but with minor changes here and there and a different story
Personally I like rogue more I like how they switched it up and made you a Templar and it showed that the templars aren’t necessarily bad people of course most of them are…
"The boy has so much potentials. but so little discipline." - Hope Jensen, Assassin's Creed Rogue just exactly how i feel about AC Rogue. the game got so much potentials. but so little dedications the devs gave into it. oh well… but at least the main menu music is good
it wasnt really little dedication the devs had for rogue, remember it was a ubisoft studio called ubisoft sofia that developed the game and given the exact same release time for both rogue and unity, the bigs of ubisoft obviously wanted to have rogue done quickly as possible.
I personally prefer the modern day of ac rogue,it has a great ending which shows that not all the Templar are the good but don't show them as completely evil
Personally I enjoyed Rogue more than Black Flag, probably because I think of it as not just a BF clone, but a mix of BF and AC3. It has that Frontier and City exploration of AC3 and the ship combat and seafaring experience of BF. There’s also the Big Mouth Cheat and that’s extra points.
I played both games, black flag is so unique game and in rogue we got things from bf and grqphics and so many details from other ubisoft game like far cry 4, if you played far cry you will see that thay copied water, they copied islands and so many other things. Just to finish Ubisoft made Bf to be best game on market, but rogue is made with low budget, in the shadow of unity
I bought the Rebel Collection for Switch, which has BF, Freedom Cry, Aveline, and Rogue, and played through BF (92% completion because I just can't bring myself to sail to all of those tiny ass islands with chests on them lol) over the course of about a month. Planned on going straight to Rogue next and started it only to find out that it is literally the exact same game as BF, just set in the north Atlantic. After realizing that, I decided to move on and play Unity instead. Played Unity for a few days until I noticed that AC Origins was on sale for like $8 on ubisoft, so I went ahead and bought that one and started playing it on Nvidia cloud streaming using my Joy-cons on my iPad (which actually works extremely well and gives me even better graphics and fps than my Switch did, surprisingly). I absolutely hated it at first just because I had just come off of playing the Ezio games, AC3, and BF, which are obviously very different game experiences (I just got my Switch in May and have been playing all of these games for the very first time, which has been a great experience) from the newer games. I was initially extremely overwhelmed by it, and I kept getting killed nearly instantly in Origins for so long until I got the hang of the combat in the RPG AC games and leveled up, but now I am actually really enjoying it a lot. Like I said, I'm a relatively new gamer and totally fell in love with the gameplay of AC2-BF, so all of a sudden dropping into an RPG was a huge change for me, but now that I am used to it I'm no longer overwhelmed and feel like I have a pretty good grip on it. I know people love to hate the RPG games, but I honestly think it will be seen as a great move that the series made at that point in time, especially now that we are about to see a return to the classic formula with Mirage. That said, I do still prefer the classic AC formula over the RPG stuff, and I very much plan to play Rogue at some point since it is basically like an extension of BF, which I absolutely love. All in all, I'd say it's a good thing that we AC fans have so many options. I mean you gotta admit, doing something like making every game just a re-skin of previous games, like Rogue basically is, got stale. Absolutely still worth playing, and I do look forward to playing through it at some point, so it's a good feeling knowing that I have another great classic AC game waiting for me when I am ready. Idk why I wrote all of this, I guess I just had some AC thoughts I wanted to get out lol. But yeah, Black Flag kicks ass, and by extension, Rogue also kicks ass too. It's a good thing that we have options in this series and that everything isn't all just the same game in a different setting.
Black flag just has too many shitty pointless islands with 1 collectible that does nothing, but its a chore to pull up the ship, swim to shore, climb a tree, and then grab to then slowly swim back
I recently played Origins and what have they done to the combat? They might as well call it Fighters Creed now. These 2 games wipe the floor with the new ones in my opinion
the big difference for me is that AC4 is colorfull, and Rogue is more Darkness. This is a reflection of the protagonist and the places they lived. AC4 is on the caribe, is almost impossible to compete. Dark games make me dont wanna play it when the story ends.
I actually love the setting and theme for legendary ships in ac black flag You hear music and then just see a giant ship come out the dark fog while its thundering and raining plus its a bit terrifying just not knowing where he is and just come out of nowhere and seeing him from a distance
I dont know, i really prefered the north. The BF's jungles all blended in, just wasnt great. Rogue was really well done but short. You could explore a lot though, the maps were nice, you just didnt get much markers for those activities. Very interesting with stalkers, it was great.
I agree with everything you said in this video. I love Rogue it’s probably my favorite game and Shay is my favorite protag but the game was messed up with having to borrow so much from Black Flag which had the time out into it to make that game good, and yeah it’s a good game engine which lets Rogue play well but I do enjoy the small differences in the gameplay which lets us be a Templar with flipping the assassination target missions which are very repetitive and I get bored rather quickly of them but now having to hunt the assassin instead. I enjoy the differences with the navel combat with the plucker gun, trail of fire and fire shots instead of the other gun, fire battles and chain shots. I enjoy traveling through both games but with the different environments you have to handle the ship more in the tighter space as well as you now being able to be boarded. I enjoy the small differences but does it make it the better game, I don’t think so. If they took the time to develop the game instead of working on both Unity and Rogue at the same time both games could have been better
i know people don't like rogue but shay is like the definition of fear just look at his face in the cinematic trailers like when you stay at the main menu for too long rogue is such a waste of potential
I actually prefer Rogues story a lot more than Black Flags, it was just so stupid like Ubisoft couldn't stop themselves from making the same "rebels building a cause to take out an oppressive government" plot they make for every game and I'm glad it changes from that pretty quickly but at the beginning when they're talking about getting pirate followers to join their cause I couldn't stop rolling my eyes with how nonsensical that was. All the characters except Adawale, Thatch, and Hornigold were extremely underdeveloped Including Edward. At the end when he wants to join the Assassin's they make a big deal out of him repenting for all the terror he's caused as a pirate, but from our POV all he ever sunk were Spanish and British warships and actively did what the Assassin's were doing anyways, also he should have been the ancestor who could kill civilians not Shay. character would appear then die and the devs really wanted us to care but I just couldn't like Vane for mission when you have to kill him I was confused half the time and thought he was Hornigold because I didn't remember who Vane was because he was In like 2 cutscenes before that, it was similar with Mary and that other guy who I literally can't remember the name of, but you find him dead. Thatch was a better written but the dying on the day of his retirement was pretty corny.
Part of me wishes that Ubi postponed Unity for a year to iron out all the bugs and put a bit more work into Rogue. If they didn't release both games at the same time and was smart about things, Rogue might've been a way more memorable and better game. It seems like one of the forgotten AC games
I love Ac Rogue way more , though Black flag is my second fav , sometimes i found myself really annoyed with the fact that Edward's character never learns , i mean he has been betrayed by friends and partners over and over and over again .... both games are great but Rogue is just the best for me
100%agree with everyone of your choices. Had Rogue been left in the over for another year and been a few hrs longer, we would still be talking about it as one of the best AC games. But its time to raise the blackflag and sing "Yo ho yo ho a pirates life for me".
i still enjoy black flag way too much. beat it about 4 times i guess i should just 100% it at this point, but its the story i really love, plus edward is a very handsome and loveable guy, i love his witty banter. like a young ezio. i made this comment before watching the entire video and as i was writing it he basically said the same thing lmao. i love this guy!!!!
The score looks quite rough at the end if you don't consider they're being compared only against each other. If I were looking to make the score a bit more objective I'd give up to 3 points for each individual score as follows: 0 - subpar/not good ; 1 - okay/average ; 2 - good/solid ; 3 - great/ if not one of the best
As you say in every video, I think, at least most of your videos… That these things really are subjective. And for what it’s worth I agree on many of the points about Black Flag, and that Rogue takes almost everything of its gameplay from Black Flag. But to me it comes down to the characters. I really enjoy Shays journey. I loved Black Flag, and loved the story with Edward too! I’ve played the heck out of Black Flag! But Shays story is so good, but it got too little screen-time, or in other words; didn’t get fleshed out enough. Shay really wanted to believe in what he did, and what he was fighting for, and he did. But he also was able to think for himself as an individual and not as a part of a structure or a machine. He wasn’t just a cog in a machine, which I feel many assassins and templars are. He is a human being with a conscience that weigh down on him when he does something that feels wrong to him. And he listens to that and acts upon it, first verbally, and when he is not heard he does what he thinks is best to avoid more disasters, and even though he himself betrays the brotherhood, the brotherhood betrays him. The story is something special! Shay meeting a man like Monro, and yeah… I can go on and and on. I really like this story! And prefer the story to Balck flags story. And to me, the story is what carry the whole game! Therefore I’ve never been able to play Oddesy… x) Still haven’t played Valhalla, and being off and on with Origins since it came out… xD
Of course everyone is going to choose black flag but honestly the overall vibe of the winter in rogue is beautiful and the wide range of Templars is really cool to see but of course Edward kenway will always be a top 3 assassin and the game is just stunning n such a fun game to play but overall my favourite assassin will Always be Connor 🤷🏼♂️

I have no opinion on which is better, but in my opinion black flag is better, those sea shanties go hard
I personally see Rogue just as black flag but with better and shorter story, + some extra neat gameplay features
-Naval combat system from Black Flag
-The entire Davenport Homestead map (with some modifications)
-The eagle compass from AC Multiplayer and the whispering noises from Multiplayer as well, I believe.
-AnvilNext Engine from Black Flag, I believe.
-Naval Fleet missions from Black Flag
-British uniforms from Black Flag (slightly redone though)
-Legendary ships (but some come with fleets now)
-Man-o-war models, from Black flag (some man-o-war and legendary ship models were redone and used for Rogue)
But Rogue fixed the small things we hated.
-Introduced a faster and sleeker ship that felt arguably stronger than the Jackdaw.
-A chance to see how the Homestead looked before the events of AC III (not much different)
-Naval Fleet missions which you do not need wi-fi for (pirate gamers, arise!)
-There was a glitch in Black Flag where you could dock the Jackdaw just before entering the legendary ship stage. You could then jump onto the ship, kill all the crew aboard, and destroy it with one shot. It was patched in Rogue.
-Tailing missions were drastically reduced
-Gave you the charge ability in the beginning of the game.
and some other changes.
Damn perfect video as always even tho I'm barely in it but I already know
Ofcourse Ac Black Flag is the best game of this series 💖💖💖
No. Ac3 and rogue are better
Rogue is way better
@@ii-p996-go-brrrt-ii2
no ac black flag better rogue because graphically black flag is much better i was playing rogue on old pc it was nice but new pc really looks much better than ac black flag rogue i'm sure of that
Another great Vs. I do say Black Flag for the story and journey we follow with Edward, although Rogue is also great for exploring the other side too. I do enjoy the soundtracks to these games as well. Great video mentor
Ah Rogue, the example of "if it works, dont fix it, adjust, slightly alter it."
Black Flag is probably my favorite AC game but I was pleasantly surprised with Rogue. I neglected to play it when it came out and played it recently.
Black flag also had stalkers in the jungle section with the natives when you reach the observatory
Rogue is definitely more refined, and I love sailing around the Atlantic. But the fantasy of being a Pirate in the Caribbean is just better in my opinion
In customization you mentioned the side content, there are similar native pillar puzzles in Rogue and you unlock a templar armor for templar relics

Dunkey was truly right when he said assassin’s creed reverted to the the most boring and bare bones story telling
I have been waiting for a video like this
THANK YOU MasterAssassin.
The Big Mouth cheat makes Rogue my preferred favorite. Also I love the French and Indian War setting, cause I’m a fan of that period of history.
Even though I prefer Black Flag over Rogue because of the open world and settings both games are still magnificent and they’re one of my favorite games from the whole series. The gameplay is really enjoyable in both games and naval combat is splendidly designed.
Indeed but in my opinion ac3 naval combat was more realistic than Rogue and black flag
Black Flag was good due to Edward being a pirate and that makes him better but they should have extended Rouge's story.
Very good overview.
Was thinking of buying one for the switch never played rogue but played blackflag but never 100% completed
Rogue is way better for me... an improvement over black flag in every way except characters
We need that Origins vs Knight vid ASAP my guy. Great Vid btw 👏🏽
The only thing that motivated me to play rogue is to unlock all the outfits.... I really like the templar armor from black flag... And rogue has more variations of it
Pros each game: fun as fuck with good story
Cons each game: too many tailing missions in Black Flag and Rogue is too short
@@felhasznalonev7424 😊
Personally I found the hook blade very irritating. It just made side ejects 10x more inconsistent
@@jde7052 It felt so weird to play any other AC game after Revelations because I was constantly pressing Shift while doing parkour lol
Disagree with World Design. The towns seem very barren and most of the towns look the same. More weather, Snow and Ice was a great touch. I understand there are limits in the tropics but still. Rouge had more dense towns plus the Lisbon level alone made Rogue more impressive.
Can you do a review on the Assassin's Creed movie? Great video!
I actually did one quite a while ago as a 40K special if you'd like to check it out! Maybe I'll do a longer more proper review for it someday as well
I love these comparison videos
I think of rogue as the same thing that halo 3 ODST was to halo 3: a smaller, dlc sized game using the same assets and sharing similar gameplay to their predecessor, but with minor changes here and there and a different story
My favorite game is Black Flag, and I just recently bought Rogue so I can't wait to play it
Personally I like rogue more I like how they switched it up and made you a Templar and it showed that the templars aren’t necessarily bad people of course most of them are…
You can salvage enemy ships for money in ac rogue
Ok, now we're talking, that was always my dream in AC black flag, but when we will be able to make them our ships and make an entire naval
Thank you for your videos they have really helped me with this game series.
Black flag was amazing in my opinion i couldn't stop playing, but ac rogue is simply a masterpiece.
Why is this even a question?
100 % BLACK FLAG!!!!!!
U make a good point about Rogue not showing templars having a bad side.i didnt even think of that
"The boy has so much potentials. but so little discipline."
- Hope Jensen, Assassin's Creed Rogue
just exactly how i feel about AC Rogue. the game got so much potentials. but so little dedications the devs gave into it. oh well… but at least the main menu music is good
it wasnt really little dedication the devs had for rogue, remember it was a ubisoft studio called ubisoft sofia that developed the game and given the exact same release time for both rogue and unity, the bigs of ubisoft obviously wanted to have rogue done quickly as possible.
It’s garbage. Worse than Valhalla.
I personally prefer the modern day of ac rogue,it has a great ending which shows that not all the Templar are the good but don't show them as completely evil
I'm kinda surprised, replaying all ACs in sequence made me notice AC Rogue is better in almost every aspect of the game.
I myself like to call it "RPG's greed".
@@Ishub the difference between AC 1 and what it is now is as vast as space
@N7Andy good point ,I'm just so used to playing the older games
@N7Andy I wonder what Rift and Infinity are going to he like.I really hope they go back to their roots
@N7Andy I don't know much about their histories but I'd like to see it about Mayan or Incan empires
the big difference for me is that AC4 is colorfull, and Rogue is more Darkness. This is a reflection of the protagonist and the places they lived. AC4 is on the caribe, is almost impossible to compete. Dark games make me dont wanna play it when the story ends.
I liked playing AC Black Flag more on my Switch Lite than AC Rogue. Buy both combo collection at $14 only. So good
I actually love the setting and theme for legendary ships in ac black flag
You hear music and then just see a giant ship come out the dark fog while its thundering and raining plus its a bit terrifying just not knowing where he is and just come out of nowhere and seeing him from a distance
Rogue also had some pretty nuts legendary ship battles. The Storm Fortress is like the man o war version of the Morrigan, all modifications and that.
@@stereowired I don't have qc rogue but the legendary ships are pretty intimidating
I think AC Rouge is just an improved version of blackflag. Played both, but i felt rogue to be somewhat better
You are top tier dude! Ubisoft needs to hire you to advertise for them lol
i know people don't like rogue but shay is like the definition of fear just look at his face in the cinematic trailers like when you stay at the main menu for too long rogue is such a waste of potential
nice video
in terms of outfits, I'll go with rogue, Shay outfits are so cool, especially templar enforcer, templar 11th, and assassins killer.
Bf was the first assassin creed game i played like 5 years ago it has a special place in my heart 💓
I knew black flag was going to mop to the floor with rogue even before watching the video😆 I still whated it though...nice take!👍
Why do I feel quite different on running animation between these 2 games? Rogue is a bit sluggish and not as fluent as Black flag
Part of me wishes that Ubi postponed Unity for a year to iron out all the bugs and put a bit more work into Rogue. If they didn't release both games at the same time and was smart about things, Rogue might've been a way more memorable and better game. It seems like one of the forgotten AC games
I'm playing rogue right now
I love Rogue more but Black Flag is better
I wish they made another book more realistic pirate game
You should make who is the stealthiest Assassin.
Great video as usual wp bro
I love Ac Rogue way more , though Black flag is my second fav , sometimes i found myself really annoyed with the fact that Edward's character never learns , i mean he has been betrayed by friends and partners over and over and over again .... both games are great but Rogue is just the best for me
Great video, I enjoyed it.
Bro I love you and your my fav UA-camr and can you do the most humorous assassins
My answer is "the rebel collection"
Therefore I’ve never been able to play Oddesy… x)
Still haven’t played Valhalla, and being off and on with Origins since it came out… xD
you deserve more subscribers bro love your content
Black Flag, if only because the stupid hunters in Rogue (I think that's what they're called) ruin immersion when you're in the towns.
