The Wasted Potential of Assassin's Creed Rogue

  • Assassin's Creed Rogue was released on the same day as Assassin's Creed Unity on November 11th, 2014. One thing I've noticed since making Assassin's Creed videos is just what a hardcore following Assassin's Creed Rogue has. Seeing how beloved it is by some in the AC community for its story made me think about what Assassin's Creed Rogue would look like if it was given a proper development cycle like the other mainline Assassin's Creed entries. Rogue had a measly 8 months in development. This could easily be a top AC game if given more time, its potential was that high. But in the end, Ubisoft put some major constraints on it and a lot of that potential went to waste...

@@JamesSmith-ny2gb It's unfortunate that the only game, which primarily(and properly) focuses on moral ambiguity between Assassin and Templars is still the original Assassin's Creed 1, which is even more of a big sheep than Rogue for both good and bad reasons.

@Nnnnm Hughuuhhjiijj AC3 also did a good job. Even after the Native became an Assassin and had learned their history, it was after he met his father that he was questioning both sides. The Templars and Assassins both have one goal and that's the protection of people. One group says it has to be done with law and control and the other says it should be done with freedom and liberty. It's about the way you go about it and the perspective. But yes AC1 did a very good job I remember the cinematics that had Altair really thinking about things.

I always thought it would be a great idea to make a game where you play as a Templar during the the 1300 before and when the templars where arrested and tortured brutally then burnt at the stake. It seems like a great time to play a Templar. It could show what happened during that time with the assassins taking things so far and acting evil to take down the order. You could also have the main character hunt assassins as a Templar and collect their hidden blades as trophies.

Shay is so much more likeable than the other assassins. He was betrayed, left for dead, then rose to take down the hypocritical Assassin Brotherhood. I also think he has the coolest weapons - a musket, pistols and swords. The bows in the newer games are ok, but the guns/rifles are more fun IMO. I do think the world for Unity is awesome, but can't get into playing a character who is lovestruck (ironically) by a Templar. I also think the ship battles are underrated and cooler than the newer games; I enjoy small things like capturing the shanties and hearing how they sound once on the ship.
Finally, the time period of the 1700s/1800s is a better setting. The Egyptian / Roman / Viking eras are ok, but I personally prefer the more modern eras as a playground / learning environment.

We are dealing with memories, the most self-serving aspect of ourselves. This is how Shay, at the time he conceived a child (after the opening of Unity at earliest), saw himself, his past and the people in it. This could have been an excellent way to explore the idea of the memory cheats, that things aren’t quite as we remember them.

    • @harryfox7488

@@jbcatz5 I'm on two minds about that concept. On the one hand, genetic memories can record one's birth, as we've seen with Ezio and obviously he isn't going to remember that himself and have no view on it.
But on the other hand, we've seen evidence that times of high emotion can affect the Animus or the genome itself. Like with Ezio again, The attack on Monteriggioni prevented progression and the Cristina memories could come to the surface with the slightest trigger.

Rogue is in my top 3 ACs. It's thought provoking that an Assassin feel indebted and be taken in by the Templars. That plus the setting, French and Indian War, naval combat/forts way better than in AC4, and sailing in the ice packed North Atlantic... it's like an explorer fantasy.
You just know Shay killing Arno's dad was an after-thought to tie the games together because of Bellec. Young Bellec was an active Assassin and French soldier is in the same time and place as Shay during Rogue, yet he never mentions Shay or the events of Rogue in a recognisable way.
He was also the Brotherhood's liaison in the French Army during the French and Indian War, which makes him twice an enemy to Shay. So where was Bellec while Shay was taking fort after fort from the French and raiding their camps and killing assassins?
Shay was the famous renegade who drove Bellec out of the colonies, killed off most of the Assassins and even killed his pupil Charles Dorian, so Bellec would have made a great antagonist in Rogue and would have carried a lasting grudge against Shay in Unity.
There is also the question of Bellec searching for those "messages from the past", which sounds a lot like what Haytham was doing in the American Colonies in AC3. So was Bellec doing the same for the Assassins and continued that task in France?
All these loose threads are wasted storytelling potential. Like you said the games weren't developed with any of that in mind.

My journey with Assassin's Creed began in 2017.
At the time I was reading up on Origins because the hype was huge, did some research on the series and ACIII caught my attention. And since my local GameStop only had the Americas Trilogy for PS3, that's what I've got, and decided to play chronologically.
Started of with IV, and about half way through it, one day I was walking pass a yard sale and there I saw Rogue, might as well been brand new but they guy only wanted 10$ for it.
After finishing IV, time came I've put the disc in, the main theme that plays gives me nice chills every time (back then I didn't play II so didn't know it was a modified Ezio's theme)
I had so much fun with Rogue, to a point my wife told me I spoke with an light Irish accent here and there without realizing it. There's something comforting about this game, and the music is one of those things, I mean a night sky, aurora borealis, sound of waves and cold wind... maybe I'm biased because I live in the north east and enjoy cold and drab environment during the winter.
Still, the story got me hooked and collecting everything and getting a platinum trophy was way more enjoyable than Black Flag for some reason. And the environments had a huge part probably, I mean in IV no matter where I was everything looked kinda the same, palm trees, sand, lots of flora and fauna.
Rogue had New York which was ACIII size but a bit different from the original, there were forests and mountains, and further north the River Valley everything was
covered in snow, not to mention the Atlantic ocean and glaciers floating around.
Honestly I can ramble about this game for hours.

I haven't seen the whole video yet, but here are my two cents.
Rogue is really underrated as a game. It had a good story and the different perspective was a breath of fresh air. The protagonist was easy to support and likeable. The problem was in the time skips.
See, Shay's first friendly interaction with the Templars was just after he was betrayed by the Assassins. Granted the conflict was set up, but they could've taken more time to convey to the player the growing bond between Shay and the Templars.
Even the conflict between the two factions could have been portrayed better. Then, Shay's jump to the Templars would've made more sense. I understand not giving the Assassins the piece of Eden, but he had no reason to join the Templars because of that.
Otherwise, I loved the game. Very similar to Black Flag but some gameplay changes like the Parkour bits and the stalkers made the game very unique.

I'm not saying that I think Black Flag is bad, however it definitely feels like this game is an improvement on the gameplay engine. The ship combat feels better, the stealth feels better, the parkour feels better and the economy feels better.

I remember after I picked up both rogue and unity I spent about 3 hours on unity and stopped because of the terrible bugs and performance, couldn't even play coop with my friends so the next day I booted up my 360, played rogue and made it to seq 6 before I took a break but still wanted to play more rogue. The story was more interesting off the bat and the gameplay was more of 4 so I was pretty happy, then I beat the game and pushed through Unity cause I wanted to see Shay in it, was disappointed but, eh.

Rogue is in my top 3 AC games. I think that the shorter story is to it's benefit. Most AC games' stories are bloated and thus difficult to follow. In addition to the concise story I loved the setting. I think I spent more time exploring Rogue than Unity and about the same amount of time exploring as Black Flag despite it being a shorter game than both of those. It's difficult to pick a favorite AC game, but Rogue is definitely a strong contender.

You can tell the passion that was put into the game, and honestly barring some of the cliches, this game was even more full of Assassin style elements. Bascially I'm saying you felt like an Assassin, and you felt like a Templar. The soundtrack was one of the best I've heard and the sea shanties and tavern songs! (The tavern songs are some of the best I've heard). I read reports or somewhere that Ubisoft actually loves Shay, and would love to do a sequel. But given where the series direction has gone, a game focusing on the Templars, would actually perhaps revive the AC lore in so many different ways.
I'm glad the game got made, but all the characters had such terrific voice acting, that I would do a sequel to Unity, and a remake of Rogue to basically expand the story, make the open world feel more large (not too big) but enough that you would be able to experience what Rogue had to limit.
At the end, it is an under-rated game, but more importantly its the second AC game that let you play as an Templar.
    More templar games!

It is just so shame Rogue's story was so short.

The new elements of Rogue, like the stalker assassins that can pop out and kill you if you don’t watch out, were great. The biggest issue I have with it, as someone who only played through all of the AC games over the course of the past year or so, is that Rogue is largely just a re-skin of Black Flag. There’s more about the game that is the same than there is different. It’s a fun game for sure, but playing Black Flag and then starting Rogue right up after it feels like more of the same stuff I’d been doing for 35 hours in Black Flag. Had Rogue had a chance to develop more and come out a year or so later than it had, it would have fared much better.

For me, Rouge was an expansion to black flag and that was awesome. More excellent naval combat, more exploring, more evrything. Playing from a templar view was actually interesting. You are with the people in power in a chaotic world and have to maintain peace and order. It actually felt very convincing how you had go to hunt these radical "freedom fighter"Assassin-maniacs. From templar-perspective they were barely more than hurdles to overcome on the way to a more peacefull society. As long as i could LOOK like an Assassin (or alternatively the Frontier outfit) i was happy.

It remind me of the philosophical aspect of the ideological conflict between the templars and the assassin that made the first assassin creed game with Altair during the crusade that made it so special and unique that was miss after the sequels that focus only on adventure(ezio trilogy), and later the sci fi/fantasy aspect in vahahala, odyssey, and origin. The best parts of assassin greed 1 was that the templars villians when you have a final conversation of them after assassinating them had made alot of a great points, criticism, and sympathetic qualities that question if they are the bad guy or if the assassin's weren't all that different from them with the methods use since both assassin's and the templars are both sides of the same coin cut from the same cloth. Something that was crucially missing in the ezio trilogy since the Italian templars such as the Borgias family were stereotypical villians. The closes we ever got that the assassin's were wrong or moral questionable and the templars were right or necessary was in assassin 3, syndicate and unity.

For me, Rogue was my first AC game, low priced at a pawn shop. I had and still have very little idea of the history, but it was amazing to me. The graphics looked awesome to me, the characters and especially the music was just as great. The fighting was unlike someone who grew up with the PS2 stars, it was such a breath of breath of fresh air, the sneaking and the hunting was eye opening. I loved sailing around listening to Sea Shanties and to the music. I have Odyssey and while the graphics are great, music too, but it feels too drawn out and very much longer than Rogue. I just dusted off the Xbox 360 and bought Assassins Creed II and look forward to playing the older titles, but I doubt they’ll beat Rogue as my favorite

I always felt that there was some adult chemistry between him and Hope, and the Native Assassin (I'm sorry I won't even try to spell his name) was definitely a teacher while Liam was supposed to be his best friend. They obviously made it work. But with some real time I would put money on it being more towards the top assassin's creed. Achilles was always a stubborn fool. But Ubisoft learning anything other than how to piss off fans😂😂😂😂😂 okay.

I also liked that we got to see what Hathem and the templars were up to before Connor became involved before the lesson Achillies had to learn.
