Assassin's Creed Rogue is an action-adventure video game developed by Ubisoft Sofia and published by Ubisoft.[1] It is the seventh major installment in the Assassin's Creed series, and is set between 2013's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and 2012's Assassin's Creed III. It also has ties to Assassin's Creed Unity, which was released on the same day as Rogue. It is the last Assassin's Creed game to be developed for the seventh generation of consoles, being released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in November 2014,[1][2] and for Microsoft Windows in March 2015.[3][4] A remastered version of the game was released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in March 2018.[5] It was also released on the Nintendo Switch as part of The Rebel Collection alongside Black Flag in December 2019.[6]
The plot is set in a fictional history of real-world events and follows the millennia-old struggle between the Assassins, who fight to preserve peace and free will, and the Templars, who desire peace through control. The framing story is set during the 21st century and depicts the player as an employee of Abstergo Industries (a company used as a front by the modern-da the Templars). The main plot is set during the French and Indian War from 1752 to 1760, and follows Shay Patrick Cormac, an Irish American Assassin-turned-Templar who hunts down former members of his Brotherhood after becoming disillusioned with their tactics. Gameplay in Rogue is very similar to that of Black Flag with a mixture of ship-based naval exploration and third-person land-based exploration, though some new features have been added.
Upon release, Rogue received a mixed reception, with praise directed at the game's twist on the traditional formula by playing as a Templar, the mature storyline, complex protagonist, and sophisticated depiction of the Assassin-Templar conflict, as well as the additions to the franchise's lore and the naval warfare gameplay. However, it was criticized for failing to innovate the series' formula and its similarities to Black Flag.
Assassin's Creed Rogue is an action-adventure, stealth game set in an open world environment and played from a third-person perspective. Naval aspects from previous games return with the player controlling Shay's ship, the Morrigan. The Morrigan has a shallower draft compared to Edward Kenway's Jackdaw from Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, allowing for river travel.[1][7] New features include new ship-based weapons such as releasing an oil slick which can then be ignited, Puckle guns, and the ability for enemies to board the Morrigan during ship-to-ship combat. The arctic environment also adds features to naval gameplay and exploration, as certain icebergs can be rammed with an icebreaker.[8] However, the underwater diving missions featured in Black Flag do not exist as swimming in the North Atlantic causes the player's health to rapidly deplete due to the frigid water, though Shay is able to swim in the more southerly waters of the 'river valley' area.[9]

The biggest failure of this game's story for me is that it gives you plenty of reason to fight the Assassins but almost no reason whatsoever to join with the Templars. Shay was rarely exposed to the darker side of the Templars and he felt more like a mercenary for them in the war and everyone kind of just uncomfortably swept his past under the rug. They quite literally skip Shay's entire conversion to the Templar order. Sure you see the scene where he officially joins them, but we never see *why.*
I think it would be far more interesting to pair Shay with Haytham right from the start instead of George Munroe. Or perhaps both. Haytham could be the one who stays his hand, empathising with a former Assassin disenfranchised with the order, but mainly keeping Shay alive purely out of necessity. Haytham would be on Shay at all times in order to prevent a betrayal, since at the start there was no reason to think that Shay wouldn't massacre the Templar leadership as soon as he finished off the Assassins.

to me, the biggest problem is how idiotic it all felt. its one of those "lets show everyone is grey" but to do that they go too overboard. seriously, "lets destroy an entire major city and not feel remorse". that's cartoony levels of psycopathy.

He didn’t want to kill his old comrades but he didn’t want the assassins to create MORE earthquakes. At first his intentions were just but towards the end you can see the evil of the templar order corrupted him. So really it’s more of a “downfall story” not vengeance. I didn't really see where Shay was corrupted by the Templar order though. Yeah, he joined them, but to me, it seems more that he was doing what he was told than really believing what he was doing. When you know the two sides of the war, you *have* to choose a side so you won't be pursued by both. Shay's primary function was getting his hands on the precursor box and hunting Assassins. Which is basically just a flipside of what he used to do as an Assassin, hunting Templars. He's good on it, why changing his function?
I doubt you would ever see Shay trying to indoctrinate anyone into the Order. I even believe when his son joins it - and later his grandson - is basically out of formality. Since you're a Templar, your offspring will also be.

@@Sekaidestroyer well it does start off with Shay just taking orders but overtime you can see that he does allow himself to be indoctrinated. You can even tell by the tone of his voice. At first you hear his voice feel little bit more lighter with some joy but towards the end you can hear that his voice is more low and full of darkness. Plus you have the ring of fire around the flying eagle in the ending. Really shows the downfall of his character. Obviously I do not like the path that the assassins were on in rogue but at the same time giving more military power to the Templars(Haytham Kenway) wasn’t the best idea. If shay didn’t help them, Connor would’ve had less troubles in the American revolution and it’s possible that his village (including his mother) would have lived.

    • @WillWright77
      @WillWright77 Рік тому +1

Connor absolutely did NOT get vengeance. He killed Haytham, but where’s there a need for revenge? For his absence and lack on knowledge of Connor’s very existence? He killed Charles Lee. Still, no need for vengeance; all Lee did to him personally was strangle him in the woods and say some racist shit. The true bastion of all Connor seeks to fight against is George Washington, who ordered the slaughter and torching of Connor’s village. But Connor can’t kill George as it would be compromising both the brotherhood and everything he believes in as it’d lead to the downfall of the colonies, the British winning the war and who-knows-what else. Connor is left at a stalemate with life and his own narrative after his people are scattered, chased away by the colonists, his father whom he grows to love and respect has been killed by his own hand, the man responsible for it all is alive and well (and has been ordering Connor around for quite a while too). No vengeance here. Also Ezio doesn’t really get vengeance either: he kills the borgias not for revenge, but out of necessity. He grows to realise that revenge is a fool’s game which is why he initially spares them. He eventually HAS to kill them as they’re plain and simply too dangerous and fucked up to be kept alive.

I played this for the first time very recently, and I loved it. I think it works so well because Shay is the single most moral protagonist in all of Assassin's Creed. He doesn't care about sides, he cares about saving lives and keeping people safe. And it's not like he just switched sides and became a templar apologist. There are a couple times the templars are going to do things he doesn't think are on the up and up and he immediately calls them to the carpet and appeals to their better natures. I also like how the game shows that there are bad assassins and good templars. Combine all that with just how well connected the story is with other events in the AC universe, and it's just brilliant.

It really showed off how the Assassin/Templar divide is about information and perspective. And the Lisbon earthquake sequence was INCREDIBLE. I feel like Rogue is more about the time period than the setting. Don't get me wrong, as a Canadian I loved seeing city names I recognize, but seeing how much real history they crammed in there was so cool. Haiti and Lisbon earthquakes, American and French Revolutions, all of the historical figures. AND they connected it to 3 other AC games? For how much they tried to fit into Rogue they did a pretty good job with it.

One of the major complaints I heard when it first came out was the Assassins are out of character.
In truth I feel like that argument is overstated because the flaws in the Creed that this game highlighted have existed AT LEAST since ACII where Altair acknowledges them in his codex, though arguably even since ACI.
I honestly wouldn't quite put Achilles on Al Mualim's level because I can sympathize with the formers perspective a lot more, even as I know he is in the wrong. The thing I love about Rogue is how both Achilles and Shay make sense when you look at it from the information they have at the time, Achilles later admits he was wrong, and though Shay's outrage is understandable he didn't do the best job of communicating what had happened.

The difference between this an Unity is incredible but on the PS3/XBox360 it was definitely one of the best looking games that console generation had. And you have to give Ubisoft some probs for still releasing for what was basically an outdated system. Also considering this was probably made by a small team in a tight budget I can really appreciate the work they put into it. It feels like they got the most out of what they had to work with (and that’s why I think it’s ok they took so much directly from Black Flag).
Selling it full price might be a bit steep but I remember buying it for around 30$ not a year after launch

Yep I believe they're all 8s minimum. They're all fun video games. People have such different expectations for sequels that it's always wild for me to see. "It's the same as it's always been" can be the worst outcome for one person while "it's evolved to the point of becoming something new" can be the best outcome. There's a point where we have to realize what these devs are going for... And for Ubisoft they've been making sequels that "are mostly the same" for a really long time. That's not a bad thing unless you decide you wanted something else or got tired of it.

I bought the black flag/rogue remastered on switch. Got it for like $20. Playing thru black flag (which I love) and then will go on to rogue. Playing it on the go is pretty sweet. And the game looks surprisingly good for a switch port. Haven’t played these games since ps3 days. I forgot how good these games are!

I think the biggest fault for me is the assassin's don't really feel like Assassins and Shay feels like he's a Templar because he's not an Assassin and not because he actually believes in their values and goals. I think he should have been a target in Unity though, Arno vs Old Man Shay would be sick.

I like to think that Rogue is the most aesthetically beautiful one in the series. I love the setting during the French and Indian war, it doesn’t get talked about much, and the icebergs and the Canadian wilderness makes it all look nice.

Thank you for doing all these reviews, I think I'm going to buy liberations, black flag, and rogue! I do like the "assassins aren't always good and templars aren't always bad" thing. I'm half way through Unity now, and because Elise's letters, I've been trying to only knock out and and use only non lethal weapons in stead of killing the guards (not for the red guys lol I don't like them).

Rouge caught my eye more than Unity, back when they released. I love how this one little AC game ties so many others together. Honestly, l miss that kind of connective thread btwn ACs. The music in Rough, too. It feels like the Ezio Era music, but with a flair. Amongst my favorites 🤌✨️

I was really hoping he talked about the ship battle mechanics. That is one of my most favorite thing to do in both of those games is batteling ship against ship. I liked how they added a few more upgrades to the morigan ( idk if I spelled that right) and with the legendary ship battles they kinda felt the same but with the final it was bad ass the two sibling ships( if u call them that) was a great surprise and it was a challenge to strategize and stay alive 😀
