I give a breakdown of the current cost of living in Vietnam (2022) taking a look at things such as accommodation, food and day to day expenses. Prices are rising in Vietnam due to inflationary pressure and world events, but i still think it's a country that provides good value for money. Whether you're on a budget or like to splurge, Vietnam caters for all types of spenders.
$1 = 23100 vnd at time of writing.

Here in Thailand....never want western food so that's ok! Jog & exercise outside for free, where heat adds to calorie loss so that's ok! water price is 10-15 + drinking water electricity has just near doubled from 1300-2650 Baht which is a bummer! live in my house that I had built with last money in NE Thai countryside.! Don't drink much don't smoke, never go out except to Tesco or jog lake. Live on $500 a month!
That's certainly doable here and you could probably do it for less than that in Vietnam if you were to live in the countryside. Problem is most of the work is in the cities here and local prices are much higher in the cities. I smaller city like Da Nang in central Vietnam would be a good compromise i think.
Hey! Great video 👍🏼 where can you rent or buy bikes in Saigon for 30$/months or 400$? Am struggling to find anything close... thank you in advance!
Why are driving at the beach? There is no beach in HCMC!
This is definitely NOT HCMC!
The city is not typical Vietnam because it’s the most expensive city by far.
In Da Nang, also a big city, you pay half price for an apartment with sea view
And if you want to live on a budget move to the countryside and not in HCMC
yea I agreed with the rest, you should edit and remove the beach scenes. There are no such beach within 50 miles of Saigon. That scene is likely to be Mui Ne or closer to CamgRung/Nha Trang.
I am from Slovakia, living in Iceland. I dont understand, why every video about "cheap" vietnam is so expensive? ICELAND is one of the most expensive countries in the world.. i am paying 1000 usd/ month for everything: accomodation ( city center - 2 rooms), food for a month, travel, shopping,cooking.. I snack alot ...
Average income is around 5500 usd/ month.. as in a Vietnam it is 150 usd/ month..I would expect monthly expenses to be around 200 usd/ month.. noth 1000 usd as in Iceland...
This kind of cost of living breakdown is aimed more at budget minded expats/foreigners-you sure can live for 300$ or so a month here but it won't be particularly fun. One of the biggest costs here is accommodation, it's very overpriced for what you get imo. I could easily pay the same as the UK for an apartment and it wouldn't be as good quality as a western built unit.
This guy accomadation costs are obviously doubled now. We knew that was going to happen when the video made. Shame on him
Great video I'm being there a lot of times and this man is telling the truth and don't be put off because it's Vietnam beautiful country and the people ❤❤
Does anyone know if Vietnam taxes USA pension?
Nice to see some new channels for Vietnamese expat content! Although please no creepy background music whenur talking jesus christ Q_Q
Haha, it's atmospheric 😎
Do foreigners need a driver's license for a motorbike ?
If the bike is over 50cc then yes. You should be able to use an international permit (IDP) if you are visiting but it's a grey area..
Another very informative video. Good Intel but I don't think I'll be riding around on a motorbike. Do I detect a very weak Welsh accent or the Marches.
Ha! Cymru am byth 🏴
I have 400gb of data now, for 40 USD.. and I find myself some months buying extra 100gb.. How you can use 4gb? :D its like for scrolling on FB for 1 day :D
Ah that's just data for my phone when i'm out and about-stuff like google maps, push notifications for apps, stuff like that. My phone will switch to wifi as soon as i'm back home, in a cafe etc. Typically use less than 2gb it seems over data doing stuff like this.
Is 1500$/mo in Vietnam a confortable salary for a family of 3 people?
It could be, depends on if you're in the city or countryside, and especially what type of school you decide to use.
Only countryside. No way in HCMC or you live in a local district without aircon, no pool etc.
What about health insurance?
So if you're employed here you will get social insurance from the government that you can use at certain hospitals. Also many jobs will give you private insurance as well, which is normally better coverage. I'm planning to do a video on healthcare costs soon.
would like to use a regular pedal bike over there on vacation ( am I asking for an abbreviated life ? )
I also have a regular bike that i use, although due to the heat i always gravitate to my electric one. I wouldn't recommend cycling in Saigon/Hanoi in the first instance due to the traffic etc..although you may love it!
Hi! I haven't seen anyone test Vietnamese tap water yet, how do people conclude tap water in Vietnam not drinkable? There's someone on youtube test Philippines tap water and get the surprise result, it's drinkable.
That's a great idea for a video actually! I'll see if I can find out where the nearest laboratory is. Although I would worry that I might get into trouble for doing that and putting it on UA-cam...
As vietnamese I tell you water tap is not drinkable here
In restaurants, how do we ask that we only want a meat dish, and not the organs or other parts? I mean, to my understanding veg restaurants have a term called chay. Is there a polite term for "I dont want other parts of an animal?
Yes, 'an chay' means vegetarian so look for those words or say that if you don't want any meat. That's actually quite a tricky request-i tend to stick to dishes like "pho" as that's just lean beef in vegetables. "Bo luc lac" is also a great dish, just lean beef, vegetables in a nice savoury sauce. I'll have to get some food videos done soon!
@@expatnam Thanks! Similarity any suggestion for chicken and lamb dishes? I dont mind the bones, but not a big fan of chicken feet or other parts.
@Gogadev "uc ga" is chicken breast which is actually super cheap here as it's the least preferred part of the chicken...I've only seen lamb in the Indian restaurants here, but mountain goat "de nui" is very popular!
@@expatnam Noted ! thanks again.
Please guide me how to find affordable apartment in HCMC below $200.
That budget would be harder in the centre but not impossible. Check out some of the Facebook groups for listings, also 'chotot' is a local Vietnamese website that lists many places for rent. Good luck!
@@expatnam Thank you for replying.. This is helpful..
Yo Brits My Man do you know where and how to get the beer from UK i want to buy 1 case of New Castle Brown Ale ?

@@expatnam Can i get quote price from you my man how much is cost to send to singapore ? Iam at Marina Bay Sand

@@expatnam thank you sir
It’s only cost $100/mth. Use tent. Catch fish.buy $5.00 rice.zero electric.filter the water.catch snake, rat, dog, etc. all free.beef butcher a cow.brew ur beers using local stuffs.train is a dead sentence.👍
I think i could do it for a few weeks...but then i'd miss my Banh Mi!
How easy would it be for somebody who only knows english? Is there a lot english speakers as a second language for services.
It's pretty good in the bigger cities now. Countryside or smaller towns it's Google translate all the way!
Can a couple live in vietnam comfortably with a salary of 1500$ each?
Yes for sure.
I have learned a lot about Vietnam watching your video. Very informative. Btw how would rate 1800USD per month salary out of scale? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the feedback. You could live very well on that throughout most of the country, especially if it's after tax.
What is your job?
Man you're talking my language when it comes to food; one meal a day cooked at home, lunch. I love lasagna, meatloaf, turkey, pastas of all kinds & much, much more!!! Vietnamese food is excellent! Healthy too. You can keep that crap you showed; burgers & 🍟, no thanks. Why the hell would you travel 12,000 miles to eat that? As far as apartment, I prefer the cheaper places. They are inexpensive, not cheap, for the most part. Forgo the gym & pool, no problem, especially in DaNang where the south china sea is in your lap. Good video, as usual. Keep it coming.👍🇻🇳
I try to keep it 80/20, 80% healthy most of the time, and the rest i push the boat out and go for it!
@@expatnam thanks for response buddy. 👍 You got it right. I'll be watching.
I am Bengali, I want to go Vietnam, please help me,please give me answer Boss
Only 80 countries are allowed to go to Vietnam. It's pity
Thanks very informative
You mention living in "good" area. I'm curious what that means exactly. In the U.S. that would mean a low crime area & aesthetically more attractive, but in Vietnam I think that term has completely different connotation. Access to stores, closer to public transportation... what's it mean to you? Good video!
It's pretty subjective i suppose, but for me it would be easy access to supermarkets & decent restaurants, slightly quieter traffic and not in the middle of nowhere. For most foreigners (but not all) this tends to be D2/D7 & D1.
@@expatnam once again thanks!!! I'd like to try viet neighborhood, not necessarily convenient for things you mention. I guess after a while I might want the more convenient hood. 👍
Very interesying and extense breakdowns!. Thanks for that!
You're welcome 🙏
Do you think it is cheaper to live in north or south of Vietnam?
I'd say slightly cheaper in the North.
Neither nor. Move to the countryside
Hey man, my wife has the same scooter, same color too.
I think it's the most popular one here, built like a tank!
The real cost is getting ripped off
That's also an issue at the moment..ua-cam.com/video/iY50IbCKQ-A/v-deo.html
What do you do for living overthere?
I'm in the training/healthcare side of things
Thanks for the info btw great video .
No problem 👍
Great information
Thanks
rooms way too expensive!!
Prices are certainly rising, especially in the big cities
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it

Yo My Man i got the solutions for those who is short on money then make more money in america and then go back again to Vietnam so easy right ?
Used to be easy with the 3 month visas, now you'll only get 15-30 days on a tourist visa...
Water costs including drinking water is not cheap in Vietnam
Water for washing etc around $5 a month. I pay around $40 a month for drinking water as i drink a lot, this isn't cheap yes.
@@expatnam Yes, I drink a lot of water too. Wont be cheap...
How do low-income Vietnamese pay for this? If they can't afford this, what water do they drink??
Many locals actually boil the tap water and drink that. I wouldn't recommend it though as the levels of metals is quite high.
@@expatnam Oic...This is not gd
@@expatnam can one buy a filtration system to make the water drinkable?
