- #leetrevino may seem like the funny charasmatic golfer always looking for his next laugh, but when the curtains close and the hotel room door closes Lee was far from that.. to understand this side of him, we need to go all the way back to his upbringing.

"The Sad Truth" - Are you kidding? A wonderful generous man who brought joy to millions. His goodwill and like will never be seen again.
One of the great shotmakers of all time. I love his quote "You can talk to a fade, but a hook won't listen".
“The sad truth about --“
I call bullshit. Lee Trevino is a self made man , an American success story, a great golfer and a great man.
Every interview or appearance I’ve seen of him , Trevino exudes joy.
I’m sick and tired of the endless stream of videos about celebrities with doom , gloom and negativity in the titles.
My favourite golfer, what a star, his putting tips are easily the greatest ever shared to the public, genuinely love this guy
How can you not love that guy. Ridiculous skills and a great personality. The Merry Mex is one of my favorites as well.
Golf Hustler that makes the PGA tour, unbelievable. What a talent!
Once looked in his bag during a Senior Tour match at Palm Springs. All his irons were a different brand, beaten up, loaded with lead tape, wedges sand blasted and rusty. You wouldn’t have given him $20 for the lot. Man, he could play, shot 6 under last day to win the tournament with those sticks.
It's not the arrow. It's the Indian.....
Good bio! I followed Lee from the gallery whenever the Senior Tour came to SoCal. One year in Valencia, wind howling, Lee is the only player on the range, as far left as possible hitting shots sideways, yacking with his caddie, occasionally changing clubs. Took me a minute to realize he was hitting to the bases of each telephone pole supporting the range net. All the way thru the bag to his driver. Accurate? It was uncanny.
Lee Trevino. SUPER MEX!!🙏🤗👑😇
RIGHTEOUS DUDE 👍😊
Great personality as well as a national treasure .. He broke many barriers on the PGA tour .. love ya, Lee !
The best fade in golf history IMHO. Lee Trevino was clearly the victim of severe prejudice.
This is utter nonsense. Lee was never a victim. Good grief....Just guessing, but please Come to TX and find out.
@@RobertDore-w4lif he would have stayed in Mexico he would be poor and you wouldn't know who he was 😂
Stupid remark! He was born in Texas. That's just prejudice talking! Which we all know he faced!
Thank you for your efforts to preserve the stories of the people we all love
My all time fave golfer by far. I luckily did see him play at the Open in Kent 1985. Tony from Australia.
Feels like these golfers I thought I kinda knew, I find out I clearly didn’t know after watching your videos. Then I get to find a glimpse of who they really are. 😊
If I were teaching a kid how to play golf today, I would teach them Trevino’s philosophy…. Eliminate one side of the golf course and practice your short game strenuously. I don’t ever think he saw even the left semi cut when he played. Much like Tiger and Jack never hit one to the left side unless they absolutely had to. What a legend
He was a Marine, not a soldier in the Army.
He said he was in the Marines then said he was discharged by the Army. Honest mistake.
beyond a "storybook life/career"... life lessons for everyone here ... Blessings Lee !!!
I think we need to see the flip side of Lee Trevino. He was one of the most beloved and feared golfer in his era. He won 3 of the 4 majors. He is a tremendous success and still people will follow him when he is out on the course.
It’s a story of you can achieve if you put in hard work, which in today’s generation is a fleeting thought. 😢😢😢
Some just look at the negative .. try the positive .. I'm an American of Itsluan decent & we were also demonized, some were Blacks, Jews and plenty of others .. we can live together easily if we just realize who tries to prevent that and ignore them instead of giving them publicity!
@@AnthonyRende-mo9ymYou're not American
Good video but you missed an important aspect from an American viewpoint. Trevino became a regular guest on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and was often funnier and more entertaining than some of the comedians on the show. Carson showed incredible adoration toward Trevino. His Tonight Show appearances made him a household name in the US and his fame transcended golf due to this.
Thanks for the info 👌🏻
Carson was a member at Riveria correct, driving a white Corvette, also I think Ronnie Reagan was a member too, I forgot about Carson's Golf swing after his tonight show monologue
I heard the story of gamblers down in Florida putting $50 G's on their Sharpshooter Ray Floyd and da gambler boys out west putting $50 G's on the super mex Trevino in a 18 hole winner take all match, and the winners were going to share the money, that was in early 70's, never found out if it really happened or who won.
Billy Casper was banned from the Skins Game because he kept asking his partners to split their winning Skin with him if he would miss his putt to tie them. He was serious.
Sad ending???? Dont talk rot !!!😢😢😢😢
Lee Trevino is a national treasure.
Are you aware of how he used to treat his fans in his prime and on the Senior Tour? Pretty sad is all I can say here. National treasure? Hardly.
I don't think Mr. Trevino ever thought he was a victim. Best life lesson for all of us
The sad truth ... He was great man great player and lived a overall wonderful life . NOTHING SAD THERE guys .
He's still a great man!
I spoke with Lee 2 times at great length. He is very smart and friendly. He loves talking to people and telling golf stories. He really likes Nicklaus and always has. Nicklaus likes him a lot too. Lee was a great player. I saw him play in person many times. He was the straightest hitter that ever lived. Both Hogan and Nicklaus and many other pros said that too. Butch Harman called him the straightest hitter that ever lived.
He brought fun to the game to go with his immense skills as a golfer. Sadly, There are no interesting characters in the game today like Lee Trevino.
There was also never a better shot maker than Lee Trevino. Amazingly he was all self taught. To this day he knows more about golf and the golf swing than every one of those over rated golf instructors..
Wonderful bio of Lee Buck Trevino. Mitchell your hard work at bringing these videos for our enjoyment shows...bravo. Geoff.
I was a kid when he played in Sutton, MA and he had the flu. He hit his shot on a par 3 down a wooded embankment. I stood behind him. He didn't line it up, feeling sick as a dog. He nonchalantly wedged it up in the air out of sight, and the crowd started to pick up around the green their noise level. All of a sudden, they broke into a roar. Obviously, he holed it! He didn't even react! He just tossed his wedge down and climbed up the hill! 😄
Great memory! I remember being a little kid at the tournament and knocking over a barrel of empty cans when Fuzzy Zoeller was about to hit his tee shot. Another time, Mike Reid came over to me and said hi and gave me a ball. Pleasant Valley always was a great time. It’s a real shame we don’t have an annual tournament in Massachusetts these days.
Just. one of the best ever !!!!
I love to watch Lee beat Nicklaus! Simply love it!
One of his greatest quotes ever is never mentioned! Before the 1980 season he said "I'm going to make so much money this year, my caddie will be on the top 10 money list". His backed it up with a fantastic year winning a boat load of cash!
I remember Jack being asked who he thought were the best ball strikers. Two names. Hogan and Trevino.
I love the quote he once said that Gary Player taught to him practice bunker shots standing on one leg😂
Not one mention of Happy Gilmore. Honestly his role is so perfect in that movie knowing now he was in a similar position as Happy where nobody wants him on tour
Quite a trick joining the Marines but getting discharged from the Army 🤣
well done Mitchell ... Thankyou !!!
Great documentary but doesn’t sound sad to me seems just like life and how someone takes everything in stride and makes the best of it
sad was referring to the start of his life, maybe could be put better, any ideas?

An American Story of Perseverance
Or Against All Odds
I think it's called click bait to lure you in to watch the video. Video was informative but a poor title.
The guy that made fun to a round of golf loved him to bits
lee came up the hard way, a working man's golf pro. i also remember him winning a lot of money against big name pros playing the in those staged 'skins games' on tv back in the 80's. i got to see him play in a senior tournament in concord, ma., he didn't win it but it was fun to see him along with the other legends from his era.
He was an excellent color man for nbc.but packed it in after only a short stay?
Incredible story.
Hitting 67 for his life!
Beautifully done Amigo!
Lee Buck - what a man!
Lee Trevino, 28, made his Masters debut and was two strokes back after three rounds, tied for seventh place. A rough back nine of 43 (+7) pushed his score to 80 and he finished tied for 40th. Two months later, he won the 1968 U.S. Open, the first of his six major titles. The Masters was the only major that eluded him; his best finish was a tie for tenth, in 1975 and 1985. Citing incompatibility (meaning his inability to get his draw off the ground), Trevino skipped Augusta three times in the early 1970s, and missed in 1977 due to a bad back.[
Sad truth? More like sheer triumph and the making of a great golfing legend that is loved all over the world.
What a man ❤
Man you are one hell’va story teller
Appreciate that 👌🏻
I'll never forget the look on his face when Chubbs fell out of that window
He was my favorite growing up.
Another HIT!! and Grizzly Adam's Did have a beard 😂
In my opinion the greatest ball striker of all time, equipment back then forced you to hit it on the button , and playing the old style golf ball. Lee is in the top 10 of all time I think.
That would be Johnny Miller, could hit every shot, he came up with the 9 shot idea
Always my favorite
Lee Trevino, how bout those collard greens!!! 😂🤣😂
Lee seemed all charm, but as the video points out, he could be a tough SOB. I saw him rip some poor audience member who spoke up at the range at the National in Woodbridge Ontario. He was praising and showcasing Moe Norman and you would think that the poor guy who interupted him had committed murder. This video made me realize that that was the real Lee, not a one off event.
The stuff about him missing being sent to Vietnam round about 2:29 is utter nonsense. Trevino was out of the Marines years before they were sent to Vietnam. And even if they had been, the idea that his chances of survival would have been slim is silly too. The vast majority of Marines sent to Vietnam survived. Let`s hope the rest of the video is accurate.
Great, love your STYLE - very nice
Probably the most talented of the lot
The greatest golfer who ever came out of Texas. THE MAN.
That'd be Scottie Scheffler
Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson say hello.
@@phukyew14 still early but you may be right. He's got that Wisconsin swing. Compare his to Steve Strickers.
@@mikex3909 good one.
@@phukyew14 until he wins another 4 majors then you can say that
wonderful video!
shows to go ya . if you work hard enough you can make it in this world
Another Banger
Thank you 😊
Bro made a hole in one at my home course, Treetops at the Par 3 Shootout, and won 1 million dollars! He donated half to charity!
I saw Trevino at a charity event in Tahoe. A guy asked him for his autograph and he said No I don’t give autographs at charity events. What a chump.
I heard from so many people that Lee was one of the most nastiest people when he wasn't on camera. He created a likable nice guy image for the camera to enhance his image. He made fun on national TV of a college friend of mine, belittling him on the 18th hole at The 1971 US Open at Merion. He said my friend was choking, trying to blame him should he have lost the tournament to Nicklaus.
Not to be a contrarian, but I played 3 holes with him in the early 80’s in a benefit event is S, Fla, I hit it by him on a par 4 and he got pretty upset. Said I’d never do that again. He was a bit pissy about the whole thing and I think the “merry mex” thing is a bit of a front. At that time, I was playing to a 3. That said, outstanding talent that came from nothing and scratched his way to the HOF. So, sometimes two things can be true.
The Merry Mex! 👍
240-2:43 "Discharged from the Army?" You had just said he was in the MARINE CORPS.
I've seen Trevino a few times. He was a quentisential jagoff. Mean nasty wouldn't sign shit. Yelled at some man ,in the gallery that almost kicked his ass.
I am with you about him. He was all about the money and to hell with his fans. I witnessed him refuse autographs and curse out a volunteer when his courtesy car was late to take him back to his hotel. Made him get a bus to take him back. But he won the senior event which is all he wanted. That check. I don’t think he ever made many close friends on either tour. He hid his insecurities by acting like a comedian in front of the camera. When that red light went off…so did he.
I like LeeTrevino, and he is a great golfer, but had he been sent to Vietnam doesn’t mean that he would have been killed. I went and was in an infantry company and I am still here. Also, not every G.I. saw combat over there. It would depend on his MOS.
Good story about Trevino, but would change the title of "Sad Truth". to "True Grit". nothing sad here
Trevino was one of two players that Nicklaus had difficulty beating. The other was Tom Watson. The other reason he didn't play the Masters was because of the course. His low left to right ball flight was not suitable for Augusta, where many longer holes were right to left. A tenacious competitor and one of the greatest of that era!
My god man, Texas doesn’t look anything like those pictures at the beginning.
Lee could be very short and belligerent when not in the lime light, he was the Merry Mex when the cameras were on, not so much when they were off.
That’s true with many big-time celebrities. I’ve been to 100 tour events, you’d be surprised who’s not so nice when the cameras aren’t on. Most of them!
Not Arnold Palmer..
1965 Palm Springs early morning practice just Arnie and me and my Dad when I was 16..Watching him with no crowd around up close hit drives to same spot out there and good chipping too then he said, I can't hit a wedge to save my ass..We laughed..
Then later in his life I followed him in Los Angeles for a round and then sat on the parking lot curb waiting to see if he would walk that way after the round..He walks by alone with a beverage in one hand taking a sip and sees me looking up at him..He winks and gives me a pinky salute with hand holding the cup..Good man indeed..
Great video but you messed up title! It’s not sad
He was a very jocular guy. After being hit by lightening someone asked him what to do in a lightening storm if caught out in the open on a golf course. His response: take a one iron out of your bag and hold it directly over your head because even God can’t hit a one iron.
Discrimination hinders progress!
This dirt farm little poor Mexican hustler was a main rival of Nicklaus in his prime! Lee is the Goat.
It as great as Jack 18 majors to 6 for Trevino! Granted, He was first, Jack second in 2 US Opens, 1968 & 1971.
Also first, Jack second in 1972 British Open at Muirfied. Trevino was first to Jack’s second at The PGA at Tanglewood in 1974.
If not for Trevino Jack would have had 22 majors instead of 18.
Its a shame they would not co-sign for Trevino's PGA card because of his Mexican ethnic background. He's a national treasure.
So did he join the Marines or the Army? You seem confused.
??? I don't understand the narration about him not wanting to play in the Masters tournement. That is because Lee actually played in the Masters tournament 20 times and finished in the top 10 twice.
Lee tells it that he had a tiff with Cliff Roberts: “Me and Cliff Roberts didn’t get along,” Trevino said on this week’s episode of GOLF’s Subpar. “He and I didn’t see eye to eye on the ticket situation.”
Trevino, who admits he is “short-fused,” told Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz that his talks with the famed Augusta National co-founder were not without conflict.
“I went to his office and we had a lot of discussions back and forth,” Trevino said. “I just told him what they could do with it, and I left. I never went back for three years. And then Jack [Nicklaus] talked me into going back.”
After his spat with the green jackets, Trevino twice led after 36 holes and tied for 10th on two occasions during his career (1975 and 1985), but his reputation at the famous club never quite recovered.
“It was my fault,” Trevino said. “It was my fault; I never should’ve lost my cool. I don’t do it as much now. My wife, Claudia, has tamed me down a bit, but my problem was I was never a listener. When you’re talking as much as I do, you’re always talking; you never listen to what people are saying to you. I have a bad habit of that.”
i caddied for arnold palmer but now no golf for me..broke
Bloody hell
I don’t know what’s sad about it, except his dad leaving.
I don't see anything sad about Trevino's life.
So whats the rub here?
Growing up a young golfer in that era, I despised Trevino for the loudmouth showoff he was. He never seemed serious about golf, preferring rather to shoot his mouth off.
Lee Trevino is a drunk. He hung out at a local bar in San Antonio that my girlfriend worked at circa 2010. He would get totally wasted every single night and we would always have to give him a ride home. Super nice guy but dude has a serious drinking problem.
Nothing sad here. Misleads in your title. He lived life.. great athlete, person ..
He married two women, both named Claudia!
He played by feel
Hey bud, Lee is an American.
Pre-nup Lee, jeez.
It's not sad to me at all!
Umm, what's the "sad" part? What an inappropriate title
U.S.G.A.=J.O.K.E. 😅
Two bankruptcies? Blimey.
This documentary is crap Trevino is one of the best of all time 80 pga wins 6 majors and all this in 13 years on tour broke Jacklin heart too
The "Sad Truth" is a third rate commentator with little if any talent disparaging an incredibly generous person who accomplished so much with nothing but a shirt on his back.
Great story .Was massive in the game when I started watching as a wee b oy in the 1970`s .
If you used a less annoying AI voice to do your video it might actually be worth watching.
🤣 my own but thanks haha
Got to fly Trevino a few times back in the 80s. Very nice guy but hated to fly. Chi Chi would tease him mercilessly!
Interesting!!
What a badass
Lee Trevino and Moe Norman are my two favorite players. Big characters with unreal ball control!
Both did it their way. Refusing to listen to the haters. 🏌♂💚
