I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Trevino back in the 70's at a resort course in southern Florida. I was the teaching assistant there, and Lee would come to our driving range to practice for the Inverrary (I think). I had never seen anyone practice so effectively as Lee Trevino. He would invite me to sit in the golf cart while he hit balls, Herman was with him, and he would tell me stories about playing the tour , the US Open, and perfecting his game. He would hit a full shag bag of 9 irons, then a full shag bag of 8 irons, then 7 irons...etc..etc.. I was lucky enough to play a few rounds with him, and can say in all honesty that he is one of the most genuinely friendly supportive pros, that I had ever met.. I always look back at those days with such happy memories.. He is such a credit to the game we all love. (I still remember those Faultless golf balls!!)
This will go down as probably top 3 episodes you guys have ever done. Listening to Trevino is weirdly like listening to great golf literature, a true treasure of the game, plenty of laughs and then some serious stuff too, great job guys!
Lee came to our club in Montebello, California, back in the 70's. He brought with him, actor James Garner, Dodgers 2nd baseman Maury Willis, singer Johnny Mathis, and a gentelman that was a trickshot artist. And he put on one hell of a show. He played golf and we followed him for about 16 holes, he had to leave early to catch a flight. All of his shots were spot on, and so were his jokes. I believe the name of his friend from El Paso, who worked at the club was Joe, if my memory is correct. Thank you, Mr Super Mex, you made our day that day.
This interview might just be the most gripping one ever. I had to go somewhere halfway through, and I tried, I really tried to leave, intending to finish the interview later, but each story kept dragging me back in. In the end, I gave in and watched till the end. My wife's not a golfer so she couldn't understand. I took the heat. Terrific interview. Fascinating person. Great golfer, but a fascinating person.
Lee Trevino offered a tip while working for nbc about holding on to the “y” in the backswing. I went to play the next day and had the best driving day in my life using his tip.. thank you Lee. …
Amazing listen! I watched the whole thing and I don't think I ever even blinked! Guys like Mr. Trevino are a dying breed. It's a shame they don't build them like that anymore
Lee Trevino is absolutely, hands down, my favorite golfer to watch all time. Fuzzy Zoeller comes in a close second. I say this not because of their talent or how many tournaments they won, but because of their "devil may care" attituded when playing golf. Mr. Trevino always entertained the crowd whether he was playing poorly, or at the top of his game. I believe Fuzzy was the same way. If Lee or Fuzzy hit a terrible golf shot, you almost always saw them shrug and then say something to make the crowd laugh and enjoy the play. God bless Lee Trevino, my very favorite golfer to watch on TV, all time!
Fuzzy and Lee were playing The Skins Game in 1987 with Nicklaus and Palmer. Jack hit his tee shot and Lee was urging it to stay left to keep it in the fairway. Fuzzy then chimed in, "Never trust a Mexican pulling for your golf ball." Did Lee go out and try to get Fuzzy banned and ostracized like Tiger did at The Masters? No. Lee chuckled knowing Fuzzy didn't have a racist bone in his body.
A few months back ,well now it’s half a year I played a round and had dinner at the club house, and I over heard a croup of young men talking about how they thought Lee Trevino’s stories had to be made up. Well when I was done I got up,turned to them and said, ( No The Stories He Tells Are True) because in any event Lee is asked about certain aspects of his career, the answers he replies with are always the same. And if you want proof, all you have to do is watch the videos. They didn’t have a reply! What a fantastic interview. LEE TREVINO is a great example of how hard work and commitment can lead to success.
I just worked the PNC Championship in Orlando. After the Friday pro Am, I stood a few feet from Trevino and watched him talk to Tiger and Charlie for 30 straight minutes on the driving range. TW and CW listened with great interest the entire time. It was amazing to watch.
That 2 hours flew by. Great pod. Great man. Great storytelling. Mr Trevino must also take the baton of best Gary Player impression from KVV. Well done NLU
Lee Trevino is why I love golf. He was my dad’s favorite player and I saw him at the 1971 Canadian Open in the Montreal area which he won that year. That was my 1st ever PGA tourney and I never looked back, been playing since then, thanks to my dad to bring me there and Mr Trevino to show me the intricacies of that fascinating game. Great job Laying up to get this legend on your podcast.
Yearning for the past is usually overrated, but not in this case. Hearing colorful people like Lee highlight the blandness of today's tour and players. This is your best pod.
"Yearning for the past" doesn't mean to go backward, it means to live with the same sense of work ethic, self sufficiancy, and power to overcome obstacles and suceed that past generations had, along with a big dose of - mind to your own business and don't live your life based on what the internet tells you.
Fabulous interview!!! True story. I live near Clemmons, NC where Lee won the 74 PGA. My mom drove a courtesy car for the PGA that week. She drove Lee to Tanglewood the morning he won the PGA in 74. Wish you had asked him about the putter he won with. He found it in the woman's house he was renting the week of the tournament. About 2 miles from my house.
In 1971 Lee came to Robinson, Illinois pop: about 7,000 to play in the $100,000 Robinson Open. He had made a commitment to come before he won the Us, British, and Canadian Opens that year. He didn't have to, but he honored his word. That, is a great person!
He is the best. Saw him in person win the PGA at Tanglewood and then again in Hartford. He was an amazing shot maker and a great entertainer. Talk about charisma, credibility, style, and so interesting. Makes the robots playing today look silly. God bless this guy.
I saw him in person and had a MUCH different experience in Nashville at a senior tour event.. Shunned fans and cursed volunteers..totally self absorbed. Growing up in Texas as a poor Mexican gave him a huge chip on his shoulder and a need to be in the spotlight. He has mellowed a little bit but not much. I was a fan too but not after watching the real Lee in person.
@@roywallace3964 Are you saying he's a real life Shooter McGee as seen in Happy Gilmore? 😊 I don't believe it. He's passionate and competitive, but no Don Johnson as portrayed in Tin Cup.
Hes always been the best . Beyond being a great, great golfer, and having to battle with several of the best golfers EVER, he is so friendly,so genuine,so funny,so humble, so grateful. Truly , one of a kind.
i wish it was 5 hours longer! i can listen to Lee all day and nite..my favorite golfer ever,,used to follow him all day at the nfl cadillac classic in nj where im from..i would get so excited to see him in person at that tournament every yr and he won it more than once..
Thanks for posting this awesome sit down with him. Lee Trevino is a national treasure. Came from nothing. His will, guts, determination and lifelong passion for golf is amazing. I can listen to him for hours. In the mid-late 90's (either 97 or 98) i went to a Sr. PGA tournament in Long Island, NY with my then 10 or 11 year old son. Standing around the chipping/putting green with a few dozen people i said to Lee, "hey Lee is that a lob wedge you're using ?" he turned to me and said "Nah its a 56 sand wedge, I'm not good enough to play a 60" while opening up the 56 showing everyone, " i just open it up like this" got a chuckle out of me and the crowd. Followed him for 9 holes until my son got tired of walking the hilly course. He's a magician with a club. he was cutting and drawing the ball all over the course.
I happened upon this at 3am as I was settling in to sleep....Well, needless to say, I couldn't stop. Wonderful interview, wonderful golfer, even better human being.😁
Awesome show!! I really enjoyed listening to Lee Trevino! He sure is a treasure. I followed him around on some of the Senior Tour tournaments in Austin. He is a blast to follow. Next time you get a chance to talk to him I have a story that you would love to hear. Ask him about the story when he was mowing the lawn and a lady came by in a Cadillac and wanted to hire him to mow her yard. She asked him what he charged.......... you will be rolling in the floor by the time he finishes!!!!
The greatest golfer alive today … at least in my book . I watched Lee and all the greats on the Senior Tour in Grand Rapids Michigan on year , it was one of the best golf days I ever had ! Thanks Supermex !
WOW!! Somehow this video POPPED UP and I am so thrilled it did. Like thousands,, perhaps millions,, The Merry Mex Lee Trevino is and has been for decades one of my very favorite golfers to have EVER played this incredibly challenging game we love so much.
My dad was the executive chef for one of the best country clubs. And Lee loved my dad. When he’d come to country clubs to play the tournaments. I would visit my dad when he had about 1000 people to feed in a day, and Trevino would come to the kitchen to hug him and he’d called me junior, and give me advice about golf every year he’d come to play a tournament in the champions tour. He’d see my dad since the late 70s
Lee was a childhood idol of mine. I don't know what it was about him that drew me in, but I was hooked. I love me some Tiger, but Lee is still my favorite.
I came across this in my 30 minute lunch break. Today’s lunch break lasted over 2 hours. I could listen to Lee Trevino telling stories all day. Fantastic
Lee is like that Star Trek episode (Trekkie fans)...where there's a machine that will take you back to any place in the history of the world. He remembers every detail, every name of everything. Lee will take you to the history of virtually any Major during his lifetime. He's just a treat, a joy, and still doing it like he was a kid with his verbal skills.
I played Old Prestwick in 2015, we were behind Trevino and Bob Charles - the rain and wind were unbelievable (it was July). Bags and trolleys falling over constantly. Lee and Bob played all 18 holes showing a true love for the game - no competition just Golf on the links.
Lee, you look and sound as healthy as ever at 84.....since i took up the game 50 years ago, I've enjoyed watching you play and hearing you talk about golf.
Never been a golfer, and not even a fan. However, I admired Mr Trevino way back in the day. His niece and I went to the same high school in Los Angeles, California (50 years ago). Nice polo shirt on the host.
I lived in El Paso for a while. His name is everywhere. My brother lived off of Pebble hills thats a couple blocks from Lee Trevino. I always dreamed I would just bump into him somewhere
He’s recalling rounds 50 years ago and I can’t remember a round last weekend. Amazing!
I could listen to Lee tell stories all day, everyday for the rest of my life.
This was a real treat. Lee was the only pro that was willing to stop and give me an autograph when I was small boy at a Senior event. Great dude
One of golf’s underrated treasures. Thanks for getting him in for an interview.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Trevino back in the 70's at a resort course in southern Florida. As I watch and listen,, GOD has been very good to Lee Trevino. 84 years on the planet have been good to him. He looks fantastic doesn't he.
One of the greatest, and my all-time favorite golfer. Cheers!

Lástima que este persona cuyo se ve muy Mexicano no habla el Español

I’m 64 years old now. When I was in the 8th grade, I used to deliver his newspaper. El Paso, Texas. Eastridge.
Thank you for meeting with Lee and having such great questions and history. National treasure
The best golf interview I have ever listened to. Superb job Solly. What a legend. Amazing man with a life filled with the greatest stories.
Absolutely brilliant. Thanks to everyone involved in putting this together. Special thanks to Mr L Trevino. 🤝
What a man.
And what a great interview from a knowledgeable and assured interviewer.
Pure gold.

It's truly unbelievable where Lee Buck Trevino started in life and where he ended up.
Yes it is. Love this dude. What a badass

Lee encompasses everything I love about the game.
Yo love ❤️ this game so much. 😊 Its a real pleasure to meet other lovers of the game. I'm practicing my putting indoors right now.
Lee’s da man! As great an entertainer as he is an athlete. Also shows you how important life long sports are in your health!
Lee Buck is one of my favorites of all time, boy he looks good for 84. 👍
I love lee ,he's just a good ol boy and funny and a American hero thank a vet
Great story teller. Nd he remembers every shots he played, and also his opponents’ every shots. Incredible!
The man was born to be a golfer AND a story teller. Unbelievable
Such a gentlemen and a genuine character.
Do you think God established a seed of destiny inside Trevino? 🤔
Q😮

Great story about one of the games greats 🙂

Today's players are NOT robots. They are human beings. Who play with such precision they might as well be cyborg robots. Thanks 😊

Terrific work Soly.! You helped Lee through some memory loss in such a respectful way that allowed him to shine.
What a great video!
Lee is like a tractor when he gets to telling stories...he just drops it into gear and he goes man! He goes! What a legend.

Absolutely GREAT interview. Mr. Trevino is a real treasure.
This is such an amazing interview. My respect levels have increased 10 fold.

Still, one of my most favorite players!!!!
Terrific. Loved this.
Soly, I appreciate the research you put into these. Thanks captain!
Incredible interview. Loved every moment of it.

Thanks for the interview, Mr. Trevino would be in my Dream Four some, and this is probably the closest I'll ever get.
Thank you for the great podcast with a wonderful Man. Merry Christmas
Really someone need to make a movie about his life! Great interview and Lee was always a favorite to watch.
I started watching golf around 1999...wished I had seen Trevino play...hes the one I would have followed for sure in his prime.
This is a fantastic conversation..I love it. Lee is such a great guy. I have heard this from a few guys I know that have played with him.

At age 14, I became a range boy at our local golf course. When I got a chance to hit the ball. I always pretended I was LEE TREVINO.
Cool, seems like a great human being, poor boy that made it big, good for him!
Never been a golfer, and not even a fan. However, I admired Mr Trevino way back in the day. His niece and I went to the same high school in Los Angeles, California (50 years ago). Nice polo shirt on the host.
